The fact that neutrinos carry a non-vanishing rest mass is evidence ofphysics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. Their absolute massbears important relevance from particle physics to cosmology. In this work, wereport on the search for the effective electron antineutrino mass with theKATRIN experiment. KATRIN performs precision spectroscopy of the tritium$\beta$-decay close to the kinematic endpoint. Based on the first fiveneutrino-mass measurement campaigns, we derive a best-fit value of $m_u^{2} ={-0.14^{+0.13}_{-0.15}}~\mathrm{eV^2}$, resulting in an upper limit of $m_u <{0.45}~\mathrm{eV}$ at 90 % confidence level. With six times the statistics ofprevious data sets, amounting to 36 million electrons collected in 259measurement days, a substantial reduction of the background level and improvedsystematic uncertainties, this result tightens KATRIN's previous bound by afactor of almost two.

Background/Aim. Urinary tract infection (UTI) in children with febrile neutropenia (FN) after receiving chemotherapy could be followed by atypical symptoms and signs. The absence of routine urine culture (UC) sampling for analysis could lead to undiagnosed disease and inadequate treatment of these patients. The aim of the study was to indicate the importance of sampling UC in children who have developed FN and to point out the most probable causative agents of UTI in children with FN and antibiotic sensitivity/resistance of the isolated strains. Methods. During a five-year observation period, 40 UTIs were registered in 30 patients with FN. In the study group of patients with FN, the number of UTIs, the number of recurrent UTIs, isolated pathogens, their sensitivity to antibiotics, characteristics of urine sediment, the presence of localized symptoms of UTI, and the presence of urosepsis were analyzed. The obtained results were compared with the control group which consisted of children who were healthy prior to hospitalization due to febrile urinary infection. Results. When compared to the control group, significant differences in the presence of symptoms of UTI and urine sediment findings in patients with FN were observed. A higher percentage of resistant strains of Escherichia coli isolated from UC of cancer patients with FN was noted when compared to the control group. Three UTI cases were followed by urosepsis. Conclusion. UC findings are important not only in establishing the diagnosis of UTI and detecting multi-resistant bacterial strains but also in choosing appropriate antibiotics and selecting a subgroup of patients with recurrent UTI who require further monitoring and detecting potential complications in a timely manner.

Background/Aim. Secondary lymphedema of the arm is one of possible side-effects and complications of breast cancer and its treatment which can contribute and precipitate to a number of new psychosocial problems. The aim of this study was to examine the differences in quality of life of patients suffering from breast cancer, with arm lymphedema and those without lymphedema, and to determine the significance of the perception of the disease, depressive symptoms and self-efficacy contribution to overall quality of life. Methods. The research was designed as a cross-sectional study, which included 64 patients – 34 with arm lymphedema and 30 without lymphedema. Questionnaire FACT-B + 4 was applied to assess the quality of life, BIPQ for the perception of the disease, depression was measured by DASS-21 scale, while self-efficacy was tested by SGSE scale. T-test, Mann Whitney U Test, χ2 test and hierarchical regression analysis were applied to data processing. Results. There was not any significant difference between the groups in the total score of quality of life (t = 0.469, p > 0.05), or in the individual subscales: physical well-being (t = 0.535, p > 0.05), social/family well-being (t = 1.43, p > 0.05), emotional well-being (t = 1.35, p > 0.05), functional well-being (z = -0.243, p > 0.05), breast cancer scale (t = -0.839, p > 0.05) and arm scale (t = -0.514, p >0.05), while the perception of the disease (β = -0.603, t = -5.958, p < 0.001) and depression (β = -0.411, t = - 4.101, p < 0.001) proved to be significant predictors of quality of life and explain 50.2% variance of overall quality of life. Conclusion. The results of our study indicate the importance of a comprehensive rehabilitation program, directed both at functional and psychosocial aspects.

A nonlinear coupled electrothermal model of underground cables having aluminum sheaths is developed. The mathematical model deals with the numerical evaluation of losses, heating and ampacity. The filament method, the advancing front method as well as the finite-element method combined with the mapped infinite elements are used. In particular, an improved modelling of heat sources is carried out, taking into account the influence of the nonuniform losses distribution of a particular sheath on the cable heating. Moreover, the calculation of losses is performed with respect to the nonuniform temperature distribution of a particular sheath. Some illustrative computational results leading to clear-cut concluding remarks are given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A numerical–stochastic technique for an optimisation of underground cable systems is based on a finite-element mesh generator carried out by means of the advancing front method, a nonlinear coupled electric-thermal model, a multiquadric ampacity approximations including successive zooming steps, and a stochastic optimisation method involving differential evolution. The proposed technique provides the optimisation of cable systems for which neither accurate analytical nor empirical ampacity formulas are available, thus resulting in more economical design. Berth Allocation Problem incorporates some of the most important decisions that have to be made in order to achieve maximum efficiency in a port. Terminal manager of a port has to assign incoming vessels to the available berths, which need to be loaded/unloaded in such a way that some objective function is optimized. It is well known that even simpler variants of Berth Allocation Problem are NP-hard, and thus, metaheuristic approaches are more convenient than exact methods since they provide high quality solutions in reasonable computational time. Metaheuristics are general frameworks used to build heuristic algorithms for hard optimization problems. In this paper, an overview of promising and widely used metaheuristic methods in solving different variants of Berth Allocation Problem is presented.

Phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase 1 (PRS-I) is an enzyme involved in nucleotide metabolism. Pathogenic variants in the PRPS1 are rare and PRS-I deficiency can manifest as three clinical syndromes: X-linked non-syndromic sensorineural deafness (DFN2), X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy type 5 (CMTX5) and Arts syndrome. We present a Slovenian patient with PRS-I enzyme deficiency due to a novel pathogenic variant - c.424G > A (p.Val142Ile) in the PRPS1 gene, who presented with gross motor impairment, severe sensorineural deafness, balance issues, ataxia, and frequent respiratory infections. In addition, we report the findings of a systemic literature review of all described male cases of Arts syndrome and CMTX5 as well as intermediate phenotypes. As already proposed by other authors, our results confirm PRS-I deficiency should be viewed as a phenotypic continuum rather than three separate syndromes because there are multiple reports of patients with an intermediary clinical presentation., Competing Interests: Authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2023 The Authors.)

Among the various exometabolitic effects of marine microorganisms, massive mucilage events in the coastal zones of temperate and tropical seas are the most spectacular and environmentally important. Abundant mucilage material in the form of aggregates appears in late spring/early summer in the water column of the Adriatic Sea. These macroaggregate biopolymers originate mainly from plankton exometabolites, with both autochthonous and allochthonous components, and strongly impact the tourism, fisheries, and economy of coastal countries. In contrast to extensive studies on the structural and chemical nature of macroaggregates performed over past decades, the full elemental composition of these substances remains poorly known, which does not allow for a complete understanding of their origin, evolution, and necessary remediation measures. Here, we report the results of comprehensive analyses of 55 major and trace elements in the composition of macro aggregates collected at the surface and in the water column during massive mucilage events. Through normalization of the elemental chemical composition of the upper earth crust (UCC), river suspended material (RSM), mean oceanic plankton, and mean oceanic particulate suspended material, we demonstrate that the water column macroaggregates reflect a superposition of the signal from plankton and marine particulate matter. The surface macroaggregates were preferentially enriched in lithogenic component, and carried the signature of planktonic material. The rare earth element (REE) signal was strongly dominated by plankton and, to a lesser degree, by oceanic particulate matter, while at the same time being strongly (>80 times) impoverished compared with UCC and RSM. Taken together, the elemental composition of macroaggregates allows for distinguishing the lithogenic and biogenic impacts on the occurrence of these unique large-scale mucilage events, linked to the exometabolism of marine plankton combined with the input of allochthonous inorganic material.

The degradation of metal materials in a marine environment represents the consequence of the electrochemical corrosion of metals under the influence of the environment. The application of new materials in the maritime industry requires experimental, real-world research on the form of corrosive damage and the intensity of the corrosion. This paper analyses the pitting corrosion of a rod-shaped nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) alloy that was produced by means of the continuous casting method. In total, three samples were posted in a real seawater environment and analysed after 6, 12, and 18 months. Pits were detected on the Ni-Ti alloy after 18 months of exposure to the marine environment. The database on pitting corrosion was created by measuring depth in mm, which was performed by means of a nonlinear method, and by the generation of an artificial database of a total of 120, gauged in critical pit areas. The data were obtained by the application of a nonlinear model, and under the assumption that corrosion starts after 12 months of exposure in the corrosive marine environment. The EDX analysis of the Ni-Ti alloy composition inside the pits and on the edges of the pits indicated that the corrosion process in the hole of the pit occurs due to the degradation of the Ni.

This paper gives an approach to the corrosion resistance analysis and changes in the chemical composition of anNiTi alloy in the shape of a disc, depending on different real seawater environments. The NiTi discs were analysed after 6 months of exposure in real seawater environments: the atmosphere, a tidal zone, and seawater. The corrosion tests showed that the highest corrosion rate for the discs is in seawater because this had the highest value of current density, and the initial disc had the most negative potential. Measuring the chemical composition of the discs using inductively coupled plasma and X-ray fluorescence before the experiment and semiquantitative analysis after the experiment showed the chemical composition after 6 months of exposure. Furthermore, the applied principal component analysis and cluster analysis revealed the influence of the different environments on the changes in the chemical composition of the discs. Cluster analysis detected small differences between the similar corrosive influences of the analysed types of environments during the period of exposure. The obtained results confirm that PCA can detect subtle quantitative differences among the corrosive influences of the types of marine environments, although the examined corrosive influences are quite similar. The applied chemometric methods (CA and PCA) are, therefore, sensitive enough to register the existence of slight differences among corrosive environmental influences on the analysed NiTi SMA.

The present knowledge of the carbonate system in the northern Adriatic is described in this short overview. Its buffer capacity is rather high, due to riverine input of carbonates dissolved from Alpine and Karstic watersheds, and the waters should have a higher resilience to acidification. In the shallow eutrophic areas, the combined effect of rising atmospheric CO2, warming and river-induced anthropogenic CO2 with the associated decrease in buffer capacity could act to acidification process. Significant effect on calcifying organisms is expected in the future.

During neurosurgery procedures it is vital to assure optimal cerebral perfusion and oxygenation. Despite physiological autoregulation of brain perfusion, maintaining hemodynamic stability and good oxygenation during anesthesia is vital for success. General anesthesia with mechanical ventilation and current drugs provide excellent hemodynamic condition and it is the first choice for most neurosurgery procedures. However, sometimes it is very hard to avoid brief increase or decrease in blood pressure especially during period of intense pain, or without pain stimulation. This could be detrimental for patients presented with high intracranial pressure and brain edema. Modifying anesthesia depth or treatment with vasoactive drugs usually is needed to overcome such circumstances. On the other hand it is important to wake the patients quickly after anesthesia for neurological exam. That is why regional anesthesia of scalp and spine could show beneficial effects by decreasing pain stimuli and hemodynamic variability with sparing effect of anesthetics drugs. Also regional techniques provide excellent postoperative pain relief, especially after spinal surgery.

Microbial mats are commonly observed in estuaries and in salt marshes but they only rarely represent a significant surface involved in salt production. In the Sečovlje salt works in Northern Adriatic, a microbial mat known as the "petola" covers the bottom of salt crystallising pans, highly influencing salt composition and salt production processes. Throughout the year the petola is subjected to numerous co-varying factors that drive changes in its structure and the microbial community. Seasonal modifications were investigated via various methods (cryo-HRSEM, XRD, elemental analysis, carbohydrate content, bacterial community structure). This study provides knowledge on microbial mat compositional characteristics and functional roles in response to seasonal variation in environmental conditions. The in situ characterisation (close-to its natural hydrated state) of the three-dimensional microstructure provides precise information about dominating filamentous cyanobacterium Coleofasciculus chthonoplastes and extracellular polymer secretion (EPS) organisation. In this research, sediments from the Sečovlje Salina (northern Adriatic, Slovenia) were geochemically investigated in order to decode the mobility of metal(oid)s in the hypersaline environment. The results demonstrated that the concentrations of As, Co, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn and Zn were comparable to those detected in various similar coastal background areas, as well as in the Sečovlje salt marsh core sample. The estimated mobility potential of metal(oid)s in sediment decreases in the following order: Mo > As > Cu > Sb > Sn > Co > Pb > Ni > Zn. Since the hypersaline sediment (e.g. healing mud) is used as a healing factor (it can be applied directly on human skin), the study of metal(oid) bioavailability in an interaction between the hypersaline sediments and the artificial sweat was also performed. It is significant that the metal(oid) contents are leached in very low concentrations and are treated as nontoxic for humans according to international norms for cosmetic products. In our research the concentrations of major and minor elements were determined in natural sea salts from the Se~ovlje salina (Piran salts, Slovenia) and compared to those of selected samples of commercially available unrefined salts with different geographical origins (Croatia, Austria, Italy, Portugal, India, and Pakistan). In the case of major element contents such as sodium (Na), iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), manganese (Mn), and titanium (Ti) many similarities were observed among the analysed salt samples. On the other hand, Piran salts are characterized by lower silicon (Si) values. Among the salts from the Sečovlje salina, the salt with the trade name Piran salt has a higher Mg content while Flower of salt has a lower concentration of calcium (Ca). In Slovenian samples the majority of trace element values were lower than 0.5 µg g-1, which was comparable to the results from commercially available unrefined salts. The salt composition differences observed indicate area-specific signatures related to geographic origin and diverse salt production processes. The quality of the studied salt samples is in accordance with standards established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission and the Piran salts are also suitable regarding issues of national food control.

Mercury presents a potential risk to the environment and humans, especially in its methylated form. It is among the highest priority environmental pollutants. River Idrijca (Slovenia) is highly contaminated with mercury due to past mercury mining. The aim of this work was to investigate whether the periphyton community in rivers such as Idrijca is a suitable indicator of Hg pollution and of changes in mercury methylation and could serve as an early warning system of increased input of MeHg in the food chain. Periphyton is the only site of primary production in temperate torrential rivers such as Idrijca and is therefore an important link in the food chain. It is also a potential site of Hg accumulation and its introduction to higher trophic levels. Our aim was to assess the response of the periphyton to seasonal and spatial variations in mercury levels and to evaluate its potential as an early warning system of changes in mercury reactivity and mobilization The results indicate that periphyton in a torrential river is too complex and unpredictable to be used as a sole indicator of mercury concentrations and changes in the river. Background and Objectives: To determine the visibility of pleural lung sliding in alveolar-interstitial syndrome (AIS) in patients on mechanical ventilation at two different time points, as a confirmatory ultrasonographic method for excluding pneumothorax., Methods: Fifty-two mechanically ventilated patients in the semirecumbent position in a surgical/neurosurgical intensive care unit with ultrasonographic lung 'comet tails' in three upper anterolateral intercostal spaces, indicating the presence of AIS, were scanned for lung sliding in the same three intercostal spaces with a linear 5-10 MHz transducer after starting mechanical ventilation and on weaning trials. Pneumothorax and atelectasis were excluded by chest radiograph., Results: Absent lung sliding was found in 22.7% of intercostal spaces scanned after starting mechanical ventilation and in 21.2% of scans taken on weaning trials. The lowest invisible rate was in patients with acute heart failure and the highest in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome., Conclusion: Lung sliding specificity in AIS during mechanical ventilation was 78%. Our opinion is that different levels of airway pressure between starting mechanical ventilation and weaning trials have no influence on lung sliding visibility.

The key organic constituents of marine macroaggregates (macrogels) of prevalently phytoplankton origin, periodically occurring in the northern Adriatic Sea, are proteins, lipids and especially polysaccharides. In this article, the reactivity of various macroaggregate fractions in relation to their composition in order to decode the potentially »bioavailable« fractions is summarized and discussed. The enzymatic hydrolysis of the macroaggregate matrix, using α-amylase, β-glucosidase, protease, proteinase and lipase, revealed the simultaneous degradation of polysaccharides and proteins, while lipids seem largely preserved. In the fresh surface macroaggregate samples, a pronounced degradation of the α-glycosidic bond compared to β-linkages. Degradation of the colloidal fraction proceeded faster in the higher molecular weight (MW) fractions. N-containing polysaccharides can be important constituents of the higher MW fraction while the lower MW constituents can mostly be composed of poly- and oligosaccharides. Since the polysaccharide component in the higher MW fraction is more degradable compared to N-containing polysaccharides, the higher MW fraction represents a possible path of organic nitrogen preservation. Enzymatic hydrolysis, using α-amylase and β-glucosidase, revealed the presence of α- and β-glycosidic linkages in all fractions with similar decomposition kinetics. Our results indicate that different fractions of macroaggregates are subjected to compositional selective reactivity with important implications for macroaggregate persistence in the seawater column and deposition.
