Abstract

In this paper, we present a surrogate-based multiscale approach to model constant strain-rate and creep experiments on unidirectional thermoplastic composites under off-axis loading. In previous contributions, these experiments were modeled through a single-scale micromechanical simulation under the assumption of macroscopic homogeneity. Although efficient and accurate in many scenarios, simulations with low-off axis angles showed significant discrepancies with the experiments. It was hypothesized that the mismatch was caused by macroscopic inhomogeneity, which would require a multiscale approach to capture it. However, full-field multiscale simulations remain computationally prohibitive. To address this issue, we replace the micromodel with a Physically Recurrent Neural Network (PRNN), a surrogate model that combines data-driven components with embedded constitutive models to capture history-dependent behavior naturally. The explainability of the latent space of this network is also explored in a transfer learning strategy that requires no re-training. With the surrogate-based simulations, we confirm the hypothesis raised on the inhomogeneity of the macroscopic strain field and gain insights into the influence of adjustment of the experimental setup with oblique end-tabs. Results from the surrogate-based multiscale approach show better agreement with experiments than the single-scale micromechanical approach over a wide range of settings, although with limited accuracy on the creep experiments, where macroscopic test effects were implicitly taken into account in the material properties calibration., Comment: 21 pages. 31 figures

Abstract

In this work, a hybrid physics-based data-driven surrogate model for the microscale analysis of heterogeneous material is investigated. The proposed model benefits from the physics-based knowledge contained in the constitutive models used in the full-order micromodel by embedding them in a neural network. Following previous developments, this paper extends the applicability of the physically recurrent neural network (PRNN) by introducing an architecture suitable for rate-dependent materials in a finite strain framework. In this model, the homogenized deformation gradient of the micromodel is encoded into a set of deformation gradients serving as input to the embedded constitutive models. These constitutive models compute stresses, which are combined in a decoder to predict the homogenized stress, such that the internal variables of the history-dependent constitutive models naturally provide physics-based memory for the network. To demonstrate the capabilities of the surrogate model, we consider a unidirectional composite micromodel with transversely isotropic elastic fibers and elasto-viscoplastic matrix material. The extrapolation properties of the surrogate model trained to replace such micromodel are tested on loading scenarios unseen during training, ranging from different strain-rates to cyclic loading and relaxation. Abstract

We propose a generalized description for the kappa-Poincare-Hopf algebra as a symmetry quantum group of underlying kappa-Minkowski spacetime. We investigate all the possible implementations of (deformed) Lorentz algebras which are compatible with the given choice of kappa-Minkowski algebra realization. For the given realization of kappa-Minkowski spacetime there is a unique kappa-Poincare-Hopf algebra with undeformed Lorentz algebra. We have constructed a three-parameter family of deformed Lorentz generators with kappa-Poincare algebras which are related to kappa-Poincare-Hopf algebra with undeformed Lorentz algebra. Known bases of kappa-Poincare-Hopf algebra are obtained as special cases. Also deformation of igl(4) Hopf algebra compatible with the kappa-Minkowski spacetime is presented. 8. Micromechanical model for off-axis creep rupture in unidirectional composites undergoing finite strains

Abstract

A microscale numerical framework for modeling creep rupture in unidirectional composites under off-axis loading is presented, building on recent work on imposing off-axis loading on a representative volume element. Creep deformation of the thermoplastic polymer matrix is accounted for by means of the Eindhoven Glassy Polymer material model. Creep rupture is represented with cohesive cracks, combining an energy-based initiation criterion with a time-dependent cohesive law and a global failure criterion based on the minimum in homogenized creep strain-rate. The model is compared against experiments on carbon/PEEK composite material tested at different off-axis angles, stress levels and temperatures. Creep deformation is accurately reproduced by the model, except for small off-axis angles, where the observed difference is ascribed to macroscopic variations in the experiment. Trends in rupture time are also reproduced although quantitative rupture time predictions are not for all test cases accurate., Applied Mechanics

Abstract

In this paper, a micromechanical framework for modeling the rate-dependent response of unidirectional composites subjected to off-axis loading is introduced. The model is intended for a thin slice representative volume element that is oriented perpendicular to the reinforcement of the composite material. The testing conditions from a uniaxial off-axis test are achieved by a dedicated strain-rate based arclength formulation. The constraint equation of the arclength model is constructed such that the deformation state of the micromodel, as imposed in its local coordinate system, corresponds to the strain-rate applied on the material in global frame of reference. The kinematic description allows for finite strains in the material, meaning that the micromodel changes orientation during the deformation process. This geometric nonlinear effect is also included in the evaluation of external loading, ensuring that the external forces are equivalent to the applied off-axis stress in global coordinate system. Several examples are considered in order to show that the model resolves rate-dependency of the material, accounts for different off-axis loading, and captures finite strains exactly. Additionally, a small strain version of the model is derived from the general nonlinear framework. A micromechanical framework for modeling failure in unidirectional (UD) thermoplastic composites under rate-dependent off-axis loading is presented, with the aim to predict and analyze transverse matrix cracking under various load conditions. The onset of global softening in the micromodel corresponds to macroscopic matrix crack initiation. The problem addressed in this study is to include matrix plasticity and microcracking in the failure analysis of UD composites. A thin slice representative volume element (RVE) with periodic boundary conditions is used, which enables representation of 3D stress states. The testing conditions of a constant prescribed strain-rate and an off-axis uniaxial stress state are reproduced in the model with a dedicated arclength control method. The studied material system is carbon/PEEK composite material, where plasticity in the matrix is represented with the Eindhoven Glassy Polymer (EGP) constitutive law, while the fibers are modeled as transversely isotropic elastic material. In order to account for microcracking in the matrix, a cohesive surface methodology is applied. Cohesive elements are added on the fly with a stress-based initiation criterion. For this purpose, a power law microcrack initiation criterion is proposed. After initiation, the microcracking process is governed by a mixed-mode damage cohesive law. Geometric nonlinear effects are also included in the cohesive model, such that cohesive forces include material as well as geometric contributions. The model is validated with experimental data from tensile tests on UD material at different off-axis angles and strain-rates. The obtained maximum stress levels are used to generate Tsai-Hill failure envelopes for macroscopic transverse crack initiation. Abstract

In this paper we develop a finite deformation micromechanical framework for modeling rate-dependent failure in unidirectional composites under off-axis loading. The model performance is compared with original experiments on thermoplastic carbon/PEEK composites tested at different strain-rates and off-axis angles. To achieve quantitative agreement with the experiments, a microcrack initiation criterion based on the local stress and the local rate of deformation state in the polymer matrix is proposed. Microcracking is represented by a cohesive zone model, with special attention to the inclusion of geometric nonlinearity in the formulation. In this regard, the cohesive geometric nonlinearity is based on extension of an existing formulation to three-dimensional space. Beside microcracking, the Representative Volume Element (RVE) also accounts for viscoplasticity in the polymer matrix. A recently introduced dedicated arclength control method is utilized to impose a strain-rate on the micromodel. Accordingly, kinematic relations governing the RVE deformation allow for the change in orientation of the micromodel in the loading process. Abstract

In football, having greater acceleration ability may decide the most important moments within matches. Up to now, commonly used acceleration variables have typically been investigated in isolation, with each variable suffering from unique limitations. Subsequently, any findings may provide a limited representation of what specific acceleration demands had actually occurred. Without gaining a comprehensive understanding of acceleration demands in football, it appears difficult to identify how to best monitor and maximize the long-term development of acceleration ability in footballers, all whilst doing so in a safe, sport-specific manner. Moving toward a more comprehensive analysis of acceleration profiles addresses this, as it can provide a more robust, informative understanding of the unique acceleration demands of competitive match-play. This perspective article aims to discuss the benefits of adopting a more comprehensive analysis of the acceleration demands during competitive matches for football players, by simultaneously analyzing high-intensity accelerations, repeated high acceleration ability (RHAA), and average acceleration. We discuss examples of the calculation and application of a more comprehensive acceleration profile at a team level throughout the course of an entire elite youth football season, as well as on an individual level. Monitoring acceleration profiles more comprehensively not only appears important from a training load/injury prevention perspective, but also, equips coaches and conditioning staff with the specific information necessary to develop and prescribe individualized, acceleration-emphasized training protocols that are replicable to the demands of match-play. Examples of such protocols are provided.

Abstract

An investigation was made of the effect of phosphates, chlorides and nitrates, and polyelectrolyte molecular weight, on formation and erosion of multilayers on silica surfaces. The results indicated that at very low ionic strength (1 mM), regular buildup of multilayers was observed, and at higher ionic strength, dissolution took place, and the critical 'glass-transition ionic strength' needed to dissolve the multilayer depended on the salt used and the polycation/polyanion pair studied.

Abstract

International audience; INTRODUCTION:Patients with arterial disease receiving antiplatelet agents may develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) and need anticoagulant therapy, although concomitant use of these drugs may increase bleeding risk. We analyzed RIETE data and compared clinical outcomes depending on decision to discontinue or maintain antiplatelet therapy at VTE diagnosis.METHODS:Consecutive patients with acute VTE were enrolled in RIETE. Only patients receiving antiplatelet therapy at baseline were included in this analysis. Primary outcomes were: rate of subsequent ischemic events, major bleeding or death during anticoagulation course.RESULTS:1178 patients who received antiplatelet drugs at VTE diagnosis were included. Antiplatelet therapy was discontinued in 62% of patients. Abstract

Chemometrics is a set of mathematical and statistical methods that are used to optimize design of experiments and to extract useful information form large datasets. Complex datasets quite often have numerous sources of variations, with one or more dependent variables assessed against the two or more dependent variables, hence the need to employ some type of multivariate statistics. It is critical to decrease the chances of type I error, by comparing (calculating) all the effects of independent variables, in a single multivariate test. The most common types of multivariate tests include multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), various forms of factor analysis (such as principal components analysis, PCA), mathematical modeling, and many others. Bioactive compounds (BAC) are interesting for functional food production. Their extraction and processing mostly revolves around the central problem of thermal (in)stability and environmental issues that are relevant for industry. Abstract

Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) as ecofriendly procedures are widely employed in the analysis and the extraction of bioactive compounds from plants. In comparison to the conventional solvent extraction method, MAE is more advanced as it heats the matrix internally and externally without a thermal gradient thus target compounds can be extracted more effectively and protectively using less energy and solvent. Moreover, the main advantages of using UAE includes more effective mixing of matrix and solvent, faster mass transfer, reduced thermal and concentration gradients, and less energy and solvent consumption. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate UAE and MAE for isolation of total phenols from dandelion (Taraxacum officinale (L.) Weber ex F.H. Wigg) roots and leaves. Several parameters such as ethanol concentrations (50 vs. 70%, v/v), and time (5, 10, 15 min) were studied for both techniques. Moreover, MAE was conducted at various temperature (40, 60, 80°C) while sonication was performed at 20 kHz, at 50% and I 00% amplitude of the full power ( 600 W) in the ambient atmosphere. MAE has given the highest yields for root at 60°C, 15 min, 70% aqueous ethanol (v/v), and for dandelion leaf at 40°C, IO min and 50% aqueous solution of ethanol (v/v). In addition, high amplitude (100%) and high presence of ethanol in the solvent (70%) under 10 min improved significantly the UAE process of polyphenols recovery from roots, while UAE process with 50% aqueous ethanol (v/v), 50% amplitude in 15 min was found as the optimal for polyphenols recovery from the dandelion leaf. In conclusion, both techniques confirmed suitability for polyphenols recovery from dandelion roots and leaves.

Abstract

Objectives: Registro Informatizado de Enfermedad TromboEmbólica (RIETE) database was used to investigate whether neurosurgical patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) were more likely to die of bleeding or VTE and the influence of anticoagulation on these outcomes. Methods: Clinical characteristics, treatment details, and 3-month outcomes were assessed in those who developed VTE after neurosurgery. Results: Of 40 663 patients enrolled, 392 (0.96%) had VTE in less than 60 days after neurosurgery. Most patients in the cohort (89%) received initial therapy with low-molecular-weight heparin, (33% received subtherapeutic doses). In the first week, 10 (2.6%) patients died (8 with pulmonary embolism [PE], no bleeding deaths; P = .005). After the first week, 20 (5.1%) patients died (2 with fatal bleeding, none from PE). Overall, this cohort was more likely to develop a fatal PE than a fatal bleed (8 vs 2 deaths, P = .058). Conclusions: Neurosurgical patients developing VTE were more likely to die from PE than from bleeding in the first week, despite anticoagulation.

International audience; BACKGROUND:The prognostic value of D-dimer testing in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) has not been thoroughly studied.METHODS:We used the RIETE Registry data to assess the 90-day prognostic value of increased IL Test D-dimer levels at baseline in patients with PE, according to the presence or absence of cancer.RESULTS:As of May 2013, 3,283 patients with acute PE underwent D-dimer testing using IL Test D-dimer. Abstract

Current guidelines of antithrombotic therapy suggest early initiation of vitamin K antagonists (VKA) in non-cancer patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE), and long-term therapy with low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) for those with cancer. We used data from RIETE (international registry of patients with VTE) to report the use of long-term anticoagulant therapy over time and to identify predictors of anticoagulant choice (regarding international guidelines) in patients with- and without cancer. Among 35,280 patients without cancer, 82% received long-term VKA (but 17% started after the first week). Among 4,378 patients with cancer, 66% received long term LMWH as monotherapy. In patients without cancer, recent bleeding (odds ratio [OR] 2.70, 95% CI 2.26-3.23), age >70 years (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.06-1.24), immobility (OR 2.06, 95% CI 1.93-2.19), renal insufficiency (OR 2.42, 95% CI 2.15-2.71) and anemia (OR 1.75, 95% CI 1.65-1.87) predicted poor adherence to guidelines. In those with cancer, anemia (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.64-2.06), immobility (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.30-1.76) and metastases (OR 3.22, 95% CI 2.87-3.61) predicted long-term LMWH therapy. In conclusion, we report practices of VTE therapy in real life and found that a significant proportion of patients did not receive the recommended treatment. The perceived increased risk for bleeding has an impact on anticoagulant treatment decision. This Registry is supported by unrestricted educational grants from Sanofi Spain and Bayer Pharma AG. Abstract

In cancer patients treated for venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), analyzing mortality associated with recurrent VTE or major bleeding is needed to determine the optimal duration of anticoagulation. This was a cohort study using the Registro Informatizado de Enfermedad TromboEmbólica (RIETE) Registry database to compare rates of fatal recurrent PE and fatal bleeding in cancer patients receiving anticoagulation for VTE. As of January 2013, 44,794 patients were enrolled in RIETE, of whom 7911 (18%) had active cancer. During the course of anticoagulant therapy (mean, 181 ± 210 days), 178 cancer patients (4.3%) developed recurrent PE (5.5 per 100 patient-years; 95% CI: 4.8–6.4), 194 (4.7%) had recurrent DVT (6.2 per 100 patient-years; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.3–7.1), and 367 (8.9%) bled (11.3 per 100 patient-years; 95% CI: 10.2–12.5). Of 4125 patients initially presenting with PE, 43 (1.0%) died of recurrent PE and 45 (1.1%) of bleeding; of 3786 patients with DVT, 19 (0.5%) died of PE, and 55 (1.3%) of bleeding. During the first 3 months of anticoagulation, there were 59 (1.4%) fatal PE recurrences and 77 (1.9%) fatal bleeds. Beyond the third month, there were 3 fatal PE recurrences and 23 fatal bleeds. In RIETE cancer patients, the rate of fatal recurrent PE or fatal bleeding was much higher within the first 3 months of anticoagulation therapy.

Abstract

Background: The influence of recent immobilization or surgery on mortality in cancer patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) has not been thoroughly studied. Methods: We used the RIETE Registry data to compare the 3-month mortality rate in cancer patients with VTE, with patients categorized according to the presence of recent immobilization, surgery or neither. The major outcomes were fatal pulmonary embolism (PE) and fatal bleeding within the first 3 months. Results: Of 6,746 patients with active cancer and acute VTE, 1,224 (18%) had recent immobilization, 1,055 (16%) recent surgery, and 4,467 (66%) had neither. The all-cause mortality was 23.4% (95% CI: 22.4-24.5), and the PE-related mortality: 2.5% (95% CI: 2.1-2.9). Four in every ten patients dying of PE had recent immobilization (37%) or surgery (5.4%). Only 28% of patients with immobilization had received prophylaxis, as compared with 67% of the surgical. Fatal PE was more common in patients with recent immobilization (5.0%; 95% CI: 3.9-6.3) than in those with surgery (0.8%; 95% CI: 0.4-1.6) or neither (2.2%; 95% CI: 1.8-2.6). On multivariate analysis, patients with immobilization were at an increased risk for fatal PE (odds ratio: 1.8; 95% CI: 1.2-2.5). Conclusions: One in every three cancer patients dying of PE had recent immobilization for ≥4 days. Many of these deaths could have been prevented with adequate thromboprophylaxis.

Abstract

In a worldwide collaborative effort, 19, 630 Y- chromosomes were sampled from 129 different populations in 51 countries. These chromosomes were typed for 23 short-tandem repeat (STR) loci (DYS19, DYS389I, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS385ab, DYS437, DYS438, DYS439, DYS448, DYS456, DYS458, DYS635, GATAH4, DYS481, DYS533, DYS549, DYS570, DYS576, and DYS643) and using the PowerPlex Y23 System (PPY23, Promega Corporation, Madison, WI). Locus-specific allelic spectra of these markers were determined and a consistently high level of allelic diversity was observed. A considerable number of null, duplicate and off- ladder alleles were revealed. Standard single- locus and haplotype-based parameters were calculated and compared between subsets of Y-STR markers established for forensic casework. The PPY23 marker set provides substantially stronger discriminatory power than other available kits but at the same time reveals the same general patterns of population structure as other marker sets. A strong correlation was observed between the number of Y-STRs included in a marker set and some of the forensic parameters under study. Interestingly a weak but consistent trend toward smaller genetic distances resulting from larger numbers of markers became apparent.
