Objective: In this study, the aim was to evaluate the effect of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and criteria on the diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa) in patients with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) value of 2.5-4 ng/mL. Materials and Methods: A total of 116 patients who underwent transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy between January 2016-June 2018 with a PSA value of 2.5-4 ng/mL were included in the study. Patient height, body weight, waist circumference (WC) and blood pressure were measured and body mass indexes were calculated. Blood samples were also collected and tested for fasting and postprandial blood glucose, along with lipid profiles. Patients were divided into two groups as those with and without PCa. The presence of MetS was evaluated according to the measurements and laboratory results. Results: Patients were divided into two groups as those without PCa (n=101) and those with PCa (n=15). A significant difference was found between the groups in terms of the frequency of hypertension (p=0.024). There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of other demographic characteristics. There was a significant difference between the groups in terms of hypertension, a criterion for MetS. The presence of MetS and other MetS criteria (WC >102 cm, triglyceride ≥150 mg/dL, high density lipoprotein <40 mg/dL, fasting blood glucose ≥110 mg/dL or type 2 diabetes mellitus) was not associated with PCa in patients with PSA levels of 2.5-4 ng/mL. Conclusions: Among the MetS criteria, there was only a positive relationship between hypertension and PCa in patients with PSA 2.5-4 ng/mL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: We updated our data on penile fractures and investigated the significance of the time interval from the incident of the fracture until the operation on the erectile functions and long-term complications. Material and methods: Between January 2001 and June 2014, 64 patients were operated on with a pre-operative diagnosis of penile fracture. We could evaluate 54 of these patients. The patients were classified into 3 groups according to the time interval from the time of fracture until surgery. The validated Turkish version of the erectile components of International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) was answered by every patient 3 times after the surgery; before the incident of fracture, at first postoperative year, and at the time of the study (IIEF-5 and question #15 were used). The complications were noted and an erectile function index score was calculated for every patient. Results: Mean follow up period was 44.9 (±2.8) months for all patients There was no statistically significant difference between the 3 groups in terms of the erectile components of IIEF questionnaire scores for the time periods and for individual patients in each separate group. Complications for all groups were also similar. Conclusion: In consideration of long-term results, neither serious deformities nor erectile dysfunction occur as a consequence of a delay in surgery performed within the first 24 hours in patients without urethral involvement. Objective: The present study was aimed to determine the distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility of strains isolated from urinary tract infections in our region. Materials and Methods: In this study, the distribution and antibiotic resistance profiles of microorganisms isolated from the urine cultures of urology outpatient clinic and ward patients between December 2011 and May 2013 were retrospectively evaluated. Results: The most commonly isolated microorganisms in outpatient clinic patients were; E. coli (71%), K. pneumoniae (8.8%), P. aeruginosa (6.3%), and the most commonly isolated microorganisms in hospitalized patients were E. coli (61.3%), P. aeruginosa (12.3%) and K. pneumoniae (5.8%). Amikacin, gentamicin, ceftazidime, cephalothin, ciprofloxacin and trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole resistance rates of E. coli strains and cefotaxime and cephalothin resistance rates of K. pneumoniae were higher in hospitalized patients than that in outpatient clinic patients (p<0.05). While E. coli resistance to ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, gentamicin, nitrofurantoin, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was significantly higher among male patients who were admitted to the outpatient clinic, ceftazidime and trimethoprim- sulfamethoxazole resistance was significantly higher among hospitalized male patients, in comparison to that in the female patients (p<0.05). Conclusion: As antibiotic resistance rates vary across centres, it will be beneficial that each region perform surveillance studies to determine local antibiotic resistance rates for developing treatment protocols. Objective: To discuss the indications and the results of the patients treated with ureterocutaneostomy (UCN) for urinary diversion in our center., Material and Methods: Between March 2008 and November 2012, 27 patients (19 males and 8 females) were treated with UCN in our clinic. Patients' ages ranged between 56-78 years. Radical cystectomy was performed on 21 of these patients. The patients underwent transureteroureterostomy and UCN or unilateral or bilateral side-by-side UCN on the abdominal wall. Double-J stents were placed inside the ureters and changed every 12 weeks. Comorbidities and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) scores were noted., Results: The patients had invasive bladder cancer (n=24), multiple tumors within and outside of a diverticulum and intractable recurrent bleeding (n=1), recurrent hemorrhage (n=1), and bladder contracture (n=1). As comorbidities, hypertension (n=14), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (n=11), diabetes mellitus (n=10), coronary artery disease (n=8), chronic renal failure (n=1), and Crohn's disease (n=1) were detected. The ASA score was 3 or greater in 14 patients. During follow-up period, 3 patients experienced pyelonephritis, and one of them had a strictured ureteral orifice., Conclusion: UCN can be used as a method of urinary diversion in selected patients.
