It is well known that ion irradiation can be successfully used to reproduce microstructural features triggered by neutron irradiation. Even though the irradiation process brings many benefits, it is also associated with several drawbacks. For example, the penetration depth of the ion in the material is very limited. This is particularly important for energies below MeV, ultimately reducing the number of available irradiation facilities. In addition to that, extracting information exclusively from the modified volume may be challenging. Therefore, extreme caution must be taken when interpreting obtained data. Our work aims to compare the findings of nanomechanical studies already conducted separately on thin amorphous ceramic coatings irradiated with ions of different energies, hence layers of different thicknesses. In this work, we show that in some instances, the 10% rule may be obeyed. In order to prove our finding, we compared results obtained for ion irradiated (with two energies: 0.25 and 1.2 MeV up to 25dpa) alumina coating system. Mechanical properties of pristine and ion-irradiated specimens were studied by nanoindentation technique. Interestingly, the qualitative relationship between nanohardness and irradiation damage level is very similar, regardless of the energy used. The presented work proves that for some materials (e.g., hard coatings), the qualitative assessment of the mechanical changes using nanoindentation might be feasible even for shallow implantation depths.

In this study structural and mechanical properties of a 1 um thick Al2O3 coating, deposited on 316L stainless steel by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD), subjected to high energy ion irradiation were assessed. Mechanical properties of pristine and ion-modified specimens were investigated using the nanoindentation technique. A comprehensive characterization combining Transmission Electron Microscopy and Grazing-Incidence X-ray Diffraction provided deep insight into the structure of the tested material at the nano- and micro- scale. Variation in the local atomic ordering of the irradiated zone at different doses was investigated using a reduced distribution function analysis obtained from electron diffraction data. Findings from nanoindentation measurements revealed a slight reduction in hardness of all irradiated layers. At the same time TEM examination indicated that the irradiated layer remained amorphous over the whole dpa range. No evidence of crystallization, void formation or element segregation was observed up to the highest implanted dose. Reported mechanical and structural findings were critically compared with each other pointing to the conclusion that under given irradiation conditions, over the whole range of doses used, alumina coatings exhibit excellent radiation resistance. Obtained data strongly suggest that investigated material may be considered as a promising candidate for next-generation nuclear reactors, especially LFR-type, where high corrosion protection is one of the highest prerogatives to be met.

In the present work, authors focused on verifying structural and mechanical properties of Oxide Dispersed Strengthening (ODS) steels strengthened by three different types of refractory oxides submitted to ion-irradiation. Three materials strengthened with Y2O3 or Al2O3 or ZrO2 were produced by mechanical alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering technique. Specimens have been submitted to high energy Ar-ion irradiation at room temperature with three fluences. This procedure allowed to generate strongly damaged zone with a thickness of 230nm. SEM/EBSD and TEM observations, GIXRD analysis, and nanoindentation tests have been included in examination of modified layers. Investigation revealed alteration of structural and mechanical features as a result of Ar-irradiation. Obtained results showed a strong correlation between the strengthening oxide and materials' behavior under radiation damage. It has been proved that below 1x1015ions/cm2 mechanical properties in the modified layer of all materials are very similar. Reported behavior may be related to the efficient annealing of the radiation defect process. Above this limit, significant differences between the materials are visible. It is believed that described phenomenon is directly related to the presence of the structural features and their capacity to act as defect sinks. Consequently, type of dominant mechanisms occurring in modified layer is proposed.

Increasing the speed limits of conventional electronics requires innovative approaches to manipulate other quantum properties of electrons besides their charge. An alternative approach utilizes the valley degree of freedom in low-dimensional semiconductors. Here we demonstrate that the valley degeneracy of exciton energies in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers may be lifted by coherent optical interactions on timescales corresponding to few tens of femtoseconds. The optical Stark and Bloch-Siegert effects generated by strong nonresonant circularly-polarized light induce valley-selective blue shifts of exciton quantum levels by more than 30 meV. We show these phenomena by studying the two most intensive exciton resonances in transiton metal dichalcogenide monolayers and compare the results to a theoretical model, which properly includes the Coulomb interaction and exciton dispersion. We report on the theoretical and experimental investigation of valley-selective optical Stark and Bloch-Siegert shifts of exciton resonances in monolayers WSe$_2$ and MoS$_2$ induced by strong circularly polarized nonresonant optical fields. We predict and observe transient shifts of both 1sA and 1sB exciton transitions in the linear interaction regime. The theoretical description is based on semiconductor Bloch equations. The solutions of the equations are obtained with a modified perturbation technique, which takes into account many-body Coulomb interaction effects. These solutions allow to explain the polarization dependence of the shifts and calculate their values analytically. We found experimentally the limits of the applicability of the theoretical description by observing the transient exciton spectra change due to many-body effects at high field amplitudes of the driving wave., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures

We determine for the first time the magnetic dipole moment of a short-lived nucleus with part-per-million (ppm) accuracy. To achieve this two orders of magnitude improvement over previous studies, we implement a number of innovations into our $\beta$-detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ($\beta$-NMR) setup at ISOLDE/CERN. Using liquid samples as hosts we obtain narrow, sub-kHz linewidth, resonances, while a simultaneous in-situ $^1$H NMR measurement allows us to calibrate and stabilize the magnetic field to ppm precision, thus eliminating the need for additional $\beta$-NMR reference measurements. Furthermore, we use ab initio calculations of NMR shielding constants to improve the accuracy of the reference magnetic moment, thus removing a large systematic error. We demonstrate the potential of this combined approach with the 1.1 s half-life radioactive nucleus $^{26}$Na, which is relevant for biochemical studies. Our technique can be readily extended to other isotopic chains, providing accurate magnetic moments for many short-lived nuclei. Furthermore, we discuss how our approach can open the path towards a wide range of applications of the ultra-sensitive $\beta$-NMR in physics, chemistry, and biology., Comment: re-submitted

In this paper we describe an ultrafast scanning electron microscope setup developed for the research of inelastic scattering of electrons at optical near-fields of periodic dielectric nanostructures. Electron emission from the Schottky cathode is controlled by ultraviolet femtosecond laser pulses. The electron pulse duration at the interaction site is characterized via cross-correlation of the electrons with an infrared laser pulse that excites a synchronous periodic near-field on the surface of a silicon nanostructure. The lower limit of 410 fs is found in the regime of a single electron per pulse. The role of pulse broadening due to Coulomb interaction in multielectron pulses is investigated. The setup is used to demonstrate an increase of the interaction distance between the electrons and the optical near-fields by introducing a pulse-front-tilt to the infrared laser beam. Further we show the dependence of the final electron spectra on the resonance condition between the phase velocity of the optical near-field and the electron propagation velocity. The resonance is controlled by adjusting the initial electron energy/velocity and by introducing a linear chirp to the structure period allowing to increase the final electron energy gain up to a demonstrated 3.8 keV.

We analyze the observations of a quiescent prominence acquired by the Telescope Heliographique pour l'Etude du Magnetisme et des Instabilites Solaires (THEMIS) in the He I 5876 A (He I D3) multiplet aiming to measure the spectral characteristics of the He I D3 profiles and to find for them an adequate fitting model. The component characteristics of the He I D3 Stokes I profiles are measured by the fitting system approximating them with a double Gaussian. This model yields an He I D3 component peak intensity ratio of $5.5\pm0.4$, which differs from the value of 8 expected in the optically thin limit. Most of the measured Doppler velocities lie in the interval $\pm5$ km/s, with a standard deviation of $\pm1.7$ km/s around the peak value of 0.4 km/s. The wide distribution of the full-width at half maximum has two maxima at 0.25 A and 0.30 A for the He I D3 blue component and two maxima at 0.22 A and 0.31 A for the red component. The width ratio of the components is $1.04\pm0.18$. We show that the double-Gaussian model systematically underestimates the blue wing intensities. To solve this problem, we invoke a two-temperature multi-Gaussian model, consisting of two double-Gaussians, which provides a better representation of He I D3 that is free of the wing intensity deficit. This model suggests temperatures of 11.5 kK and 91 kK, respectively, for the cool and the hot component of the target prominence. The cool and hot components of a typical He I D3 profile have component peak intensity ratios of 6.6 and 8, implying a prominence geometrical width of 17 Mm and an optical thickness of 0.3 for the cool component, while the optical thickness of the hot component is negligible. These prominence parameters seem to be realistic, suggesting the physical adequacy of the multi-Gaussian model with important implications for interpreting He I D3 spectropolarimetry by current inversion codes., Comment: 25 pages,1 movie, 10 figures, 2 tables, 2 equations.
