The exciting properties of micro- and nano-patterned surfaces found in natural species hide a virtually endless potential of technological ideas, opening new opportunities for innovation and exploitation in materials science and engineering. Due to the diversity of biomimetic surface functionalities, inspirations from natural surfaces are interesting for a broad range of applications in engineering, including phenomena of adhesion, friction, wear, lubrication, wetting phenomena, self-cleaning, antifouling, antibacterial phenomena, thermoregulation and optics. Lasers are increasingly proving to be promising tools for the precise and controlled structuring of materials at micro- and nano-scales. When ultrashort-pulsed lasers are used, the optimal interplay between laser and material parameters enables structuring down to the nanometer scale. Besides this, a unique aspect of laser processing technology is the possibility for material modifications at multiple (hierarchical) length scales, leading to the complex biomimetic micro- and nano-scale patterns, while adding a new dimension to structure optimization. This article reviews the current state of the art of laser processing methodologies, which are being used for the fabrication of bioinspired artificial surfaces to realize extraordinary wetting, optical, mechanical, and biological-active properties for numerous applications. The innovative aspect of laser functionalized biomimetic surfaces for a wide variety of current and future applications is particularly demonstrated and discussed. The article concludes with illustrating the wealth of arising possibilities and the number of new laser micro/nano fabrication approaches for obtaining complex high-resolution features, which prescribe a future where control of structures and subsequent functionalities are beyond our current imagination.

The Pencil Code is a highly modular physics-oriented simulation code that can be adapted to a wide range of applications. It is primarily designed to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) of compressible hydrodynamics and has lots of add-ons ranging from astrophysical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) to meteorological cloud microphysics and engineering applications in combustion. Nevertheless, the framework is general and can also be applied to situations not related to hydrodynamics or even PDEs, for example when just the message passing interface or input/output strategies of the code are to be used. We have measured the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the Hall coefficient ($R_{\rm H}$) in three, several micrometer long multigraphene samples of thickness between $\sim 9~$to $\sim 30$~nm in the temperature range 0.1 to 200~K and up to 0.2~T field. The temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistance of two of the samples indicates the contribution from embedded interfaces running parallel to the graphene layers. At low enough temperatures and fields $R_{\rm H}$ is positive in all samples, showing a crossover to negative values at high enough fields and/or temperatures in samples with interfaces contribution. The overall results are compatible with the reported superconducting behavior of embedded interfaces in the graphite structure and indicate that the negative low magnetic field Hall coefficient is not intrinsic of the ideal graphite structure., Comment: 10 pages with 7 figures, to be published in AIP Advances (2014)

We theoretically investigate some of the observable properties of quasi two-dimensional condensates. Using a variational model based on a Gaussian-parabolic trial wavefunction we calculate chemical potential, condensate size in time-of-flight, release energy and collective excitation spectrum for varying trap geometries and atom numbers and find good agreement with recent published experimental results., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We have measured the precession frequency of a vortex lattice in a Bose-Einstein condensate of 87Rb atoms. The observed mode corresponds to a collective motion in which all the vortices in the array are tilted by a small angle with respect to the z-axis (the symmetry axis of the trapping potential) and synchronously rotate about this axis. This motion corresponds to excitation of a Kelvin wave along the core of each vortex and we have verified that it has the handedness expected for such helical waves, i.e. precession in the opposite sense to the rotational flow around the vortices. The experimental method used to excite this collective mode closely resembles that used to study the scissors mode and excitation of the scissors mode for a condensate containing a vortex array was used to determine the angular momentum of the system. In Forschungszentrum Juelich the control and data acquisition systems for several neutron spectrometers are being built. Because some of these spectrometers will be commissioned to the new research reactor FRM-II at the technical university of Munich, there was a joint effort with the instrumentation group of the FRM-II to establish the "Juelich-Munich standard", which is basically a collection of tools and devices which are used for the implementation of the spectrometers. This includes: Siemens S7 PLCs for all axis movement issues, PROFIBUS DP for the connection of slow control equipment in the front end, TACO Middleware running on PC-Systems with Linux, python for scripting and Qt for the implementation of GUIs. Based on experimental evidences we present a phenomenological description of the thermal glass transition as a dynamical phase transition. Different susceptibilities calculated on the basis of this description are in good qualitative agreement with experimental data.
