In the Laboratory for Low-level Radioactivities, of the Ruđer Bošković Institute, Zagreb, Croatia, first tests of organically bound tritium (OBT) analysis were made in 1980’s using gas proportional counter (GPC) and measuring matrix methane. Since the amount of required material was large and sample preparation procedure was long, it was abandoned at the time. The Laboratory acquired liquid scintillation counter (LSC) in 2001 for radiocarbon and tritium analysis. The LSC requires about seven times lower amount of material than GPC for OBT analysis and due to scientific and market demand the laboratory has been routinely performing the OBT analysis since 2020. The laboratory procedure for OBT analysis is as follows: the sample is cut, dried at 80 °C, combusted in custom-made vacuum rig (also used for CO2 production for 14C analysis), produced water is collected, Na2O2 and KMnO4 are added to oxidize remaining organic compounds, sample is distilled and mixed with Ultima Gold LLT. The tritium activity of the cocktails is measured by liquid scintillation counter Quantulus 1200. The Laboratory participated in three international intercomparison exercises: 2017 (“grass”), 2018 (“fish”) and 2019 (“quinces”). Samples of “grass” and “quinces” were analyzed after four and two years, respectively, as a part of laboratory quality control. The samples had been kept in their original storage package, plastic bag sealed with tape, at room temperature. The activity of the “grass” (T-4832) has not changed (434 ± 20 Bq/L in July 2017 and 427 ± 24 Bq/L in March 2022, k=2). However, for the “quinces” (T-5160) a decrease of about 25 % is obtained (50.3 ± 1.8 Bq/L in June 2019 and 38.4 ± 4.4 Bq/L in December 2021, k=2). A sample of apples (T-5551) was also measured twice three months apart with no markable change: 3.1 ± 2.2 Bq/L in December 2021 and 5.7 ± 2.2 Bq/L (k=2) in March 2022. In case of the quinces sample, probably due to high saccharose content the exchange between environment water vapor and exchangeable organic hydrogen in sample was far more pronounced that in high cellulose one (the grass sample). The proper storage procedure of the samples for OBT analysis will be discussed in presentation.

Radiocarbon (14C) is both the cosmogenic and anthropogenic isotope.14C activity in the atmospheric CO2 has been monitored in Zagreb since 1985, and recently we started monitoring at location of Cvetković village near Jastrebarsko, Zagreb county. Mean 14C activity in Zegreb is lower than that in Cvetković due to fossil fuel combustion in the city of Zagreb. The difference is more pronounced during winter months.

Prikazani su rezultati mjerenja aktivnosti 14C u atmosferskom CO2 (šest uzokovanja) i biološkom materijalu (dva uzorkovanja) tijekom 2022. godine. Zbog kvara uređaja Quantulus 1220, sva su mjerenja urađena AMS metodom. Diskutirani su svi rezultati od 2006. godine, te je procijenjena efektivna doza od ingestije. Zaključujemo da 14C aktivnost ispuštena zračnim putem ne doprinosi efektivnoj dozi za stanovništvo u okolici NEK od ingestije outem hrane iz okolice NEK-a.

Prikazani su rezultati mjerenja aktivnosti 14C u Savi (4 jednokratna uzorkovanja) na dvije lokacije i u uzorcima riba (dva puta godišnje).

Prirodni izotop ugljika (14C) čini samo jednu česticu u 1012 atoma ugljika. To je niskoenergijski beta emiter, najveće energije E(14C)max = 156 keV, čija se aktivnost određuje izoliranjem ugljika iz uzorka u mjernu matricu (benzen ili CO2 apsorbiran u scintilacijskom koktelu) na tekućim scintilacijskim brojačima. Prirodne koncentracije 14C često se koriste za analizu prirodnih procesa, praćenje i 14C datiranje. Aktivnost 14C se rutinski određuje u Laboratoriju za niske radioaktivnosti (LNA) na Institutu Ruđer Bošković (IRB). Ugljik iz uzorka se kemijski prevodi u CO2 i apsorbira u scintilacijski koktel (LSC-A tehnika) ili u benzen (LSC-B tehnika). Tehnika LSC-A ima veću relativnu nesigurnost (~2, 6% za uzorak od 100 pMC, engl. percent modern carbon) i obično se koristi za geološke uzorke i monitoring okoliša, dok LSC-B (~0, 6% za uzorak od 100 pMC) s većom preciznošću se koristi za 14C datiranje. Brojač za mjerenje niskih radioaktivnosti, Quantulus 1220TM ima vrlo niski pozadinski šum (~1 cpm) i omogućuje 14C datiranje do 50 000 godina. Uređaj se koristi i za mjerenje niskih aktivnosti tricija. U Laboratoriju za radioekologiju (LRE) IRB-a redovito se koriste dva tekućinska scintilacijska brojača: TriCarb 3180 TR/SL i Quantulus 6220 GCT za mjerenje aktivnosti tricija. U okviru ovog istraživanja mjerena je aktivnost 14C brojačima na LRE i LNA te su uspoređeni dobiveni rezultati, odbroj slijepe probe, učinkovitost i mjerne nesigurnosti. Dobiveni rezultati za benzensku matricu (LSC-B tehnika) pokazali su da iako za slijepu probu vrijednosti brojača TriCarb mogu varirati između 1 i 2 cpm, vrijednosti oko 150 pMC mogu se izmjeriti s 0, 2% relativne standardne nesigurnosti, što je usporedivo sa standardnom nesigurnošću za Quantulus 1220. Preliminarni rezultati za Quantulus 6220 GCT imaju slične odbroje za slijepu probu kao i za Quantulus 1220. Relativne standardne nesigurnosti za slijepu probu su 4 – 5% za Quantulus 6220 i 2% za Quantulus 1220, dok su za aktivne uzorke relativne nesigurnosti za oba instrumenta iste, 0, 2 – 0, 3% za uzorke od 130 i 150 pMC. Iako je potrebno je provesti daljnja ispitivanja, postoje dobre indikacije da za LCS-B tehniku Quantulus 1220 može zamijeniti Quantulusom 6220 GCT. Tehnika LSC-A je testirana samo na TriCarb brojaču i preliminarni testovi su pokazali dobro slaganje s mjerenjima dobivenim na Quantulusu 1220 za uzorke s višim aktivnostima (~600 pMC) u energijskom rasponu 10 – 110 keV. Potrebno je provesti daljnje testove kako bi se potvrdili rezultati, međutim, ovo je također dobar pokazatelj da se TriCarb može koristiti za LSC-A tehniku.

Prikazani su rezultati mjerenja aktivnpsti 14C u kvartaknim uzorcima vode iz WMT2. Diskutirani su svi rezultati mjerenja od 2013. Od 2017. je opažena značajno niža ukupna ispuštena aktivnost 14C u vodi WMT2.

Many different approaches exist to radiocarbon dating of mortar, and there is still no universal recipe that would work in all cases. We experimented with data extrapolation from the dates of CO2 fractions collected by sequential dissolution. The method was modelled after data obtained from two laboratory mortars. Here we use the same method for dating the archaeological site – the Stari Most (Old bridge) at Otres, Croatia. The arch of the bridge is still partially preserved, making it possible to walk over the Otres creek even today. Based on cadastral and archive data it can be ruled out that the bridge was built after the beginning of the 19th century. A considerable number of stone bridges in the southern Croatian region Dalmatia were built during the Ottoman rule (16th-18th century), but the way of its construction reveals that the Stari Most bridge does not belong to this period either. Since Roman stone bridges were also built differently, the most probable possibility remains that the Stari Most at Otres is medieval. The preliminary dating of the bridge places it from the 9th to the 13th century. The preliminary dating correlates the bridge to the neighboring Otres-Crkvina archaeological site, where most of the activities took place between the 9th and 15th centuries. This is the first attempt to date this arch bridge.

Comprehensive research of several springs of the Holy Mountain has been conducted.

The second international Mortar Dating Intercomparison Study (MODIS2) conducted in 2020. Three mortar samples have been distributed among interested radiocarbon laboratories in form of 1 g particle size fraction smaller than 150 µm and 2-5 g bulk mortar. Our approach to dating MODIS2 mortars at the Zagreb Radiocarbon Laboratory, Croatia, was to separate 32 – 63 µm particle size fraction and to collect CO2 by sequential dissolution with 85 % H3PO4 after 3 s, 15 s and until the end of reaction. The first fraction was regarded as date of the mortar, while the following fractions pointed to increase in dead carbon amount. The reported dates were: for sample #1 640 ± 20 BP, for sample #2 665 ± 20 BP and for sample #3 1750 ± 20 BP. In general, all the samples fit the expected ages, but bordering on upper limit age, implying still incomplete dead carbon removal. Here we will also present dates obtained by data extrapolation, which we found can eliminate dead carbon contamination, and we will discuss the differences between the two approaches.

The project „Last Neanderthals at the Crossroads of Central Europe and the Mediterranean – NECEM“ (financed by Croatian Science Foundation, HRZZ-IP-2019-04-6649) aims to gain new data on the adaptations of late Neanderthals in today’s Croatia by interdisciplinary methods. Radiocarbon gives a chronological framework providing the samples are not older than about 50000 years. Metoda određivanja starosti pomoću radioaktivnog izotopa ugljika 14C jedna je od najčešće korištenih metoda određivanja apsolutne starosti arheoloških artefakata biološkog podrijetla. Uvidom u bazu Instituta Ruđer Bošković utvrđeno je da su analizirana ukupno četiri uzorka iz antičkog doba iz Zatona, dva uzorka broda Zaton 1 te po jedan uzorak brodova Zaton 2 i Zaton 3. Datirani su u rasponu od sredine 3. st. pr. Kr. do sredine 2. st. po. Kr. U radu se donosi revizija napravljenih radiokarbonskih analiza triju šivanih brodova iz antičke luke u Zatonu kod Nina i rezultati nakon dendrokronološke kalibracije konvencionalne 14C starosti., The method of determining the age using the radioactive isotope of carbon 14C is one of the most commonly used methods of determining the absolute age of archaeological artefacts of biological origin. An inspection of the Ruđer Bošković Institute database revealed that a total of four samples from the ancient period from Zaton were analysed, two samples from the boat Zaton 1 and one sample each from the boats Zaton 2 and Zaton 3. They were dated in the range from the middle of the 3rd century BC to the middle of the 2nd century AD. The paper presents a revision of the radiocarbon analyses of three sewn boats from the ancient port in Zaton near Nin, and the results after the dendrochronological calibration of the conventional 14C age.

Fossil fuel combustion decrease 14C activity and 13C composition of atmospheric CO2, which is also known as the Suess effect. For one year (2021), we have been monitoring carbon isotope composition of atmospheric CO2 at locations under maritime influence of the Adriatic Sea: coastal city of Rijeka and at two clean air sites in vicinity, Gornje Jelenje and Parg with mountain climate. Carbon isotope composition at all sites shows seasonal variation, with the lowest 14C activities and δ13C in winter-spring, and the highest in summer, ranging from -41.3 to 25.2 ‰ for Δ14C and -13.1 to -11.3 ‰ for δ13C, respectively. Rijeka has systematically the lowest and Parg the highest Δ14C, however δ13C at the sites are not statistically different one from another. Leaves of deciduous trees were also collected. Their Δ14C reflect the trend of atmospheric Δ14C, being the lowest at Rijeka and highest at Parg.

U ovom izvješću prikazujemo rezultate mjerenja aktivnosti 14C u kompozitnim uzorcima otpadne vode iz WMT2 (Waste Monitor Tank 2) uzetima kvartalno tijekom 2020. godine.

Long-term record (1976-2020) of tritium activity concentration in precipitation in Zagreb, Croatia, was statistically analyzed by the frequency analysis, the Wavelet analysis and sinusoidal fitting. In addition to the 12-month period due to the seasonal variations, strong evidence of the variations with the 10 – 12 year period was obtained by all applied methods. This period may be related to a solar cycle supporting the hypothesis of solar influence on meteoric tritium. A delay of about 30 months was observed between the maxima in the sunspot number and the minima in 3H activity concentration in precipitation and plausibly explained by the life cycle of tritium in the atmosphere. Our finding points to the importance of further monitoring of tritium in precipitation that could contribute to the atmospheric sciences. However, for studies of natural production and relation with the solar cycle, local effects (technogenic 3H)should be minimized or absent. Podaci o koncentraciji aktivnosti tricija u kišnicama Zagreba, Hrvatska, u razdoblju 1976-2020 statistički su analizirani radi određivanja periodičnosti u zapisima. Primijenjene su metode frekvencijske analize, Wavelet analize i prilagodba na sinusne funkcije. Sve metode su, uz očekivani period od 1 godine zbog sezonskih varijacija, ukazale i na period od 10 – 12 godina, koji se može usporediti sa solarnim ciklusima potvrđujući tako pretpostavku o mogućem utjecaju ciklusa Sunčeve aktivnosti na produkciju tricija u stratosferi. Opažen je i pomak između maksimuma broja sunčevih pjega i minimuma koncentracije aktivnosti tricija od oko 30 mjeseci u dva solarna ciklusa. Taj je fazni pomak objašnjen životnim ciklusom tricija u atmosferi, od nastanka u stratosferi do oborina. Ukazano je na potrebu daljnjeg praćenja koncentracije aktivnosti tricija u oborinama, što bi moglo doprinijeti znanosti o atmosferi. Pri tome treba voditi računa da je utjecaj tehnogenog tricija zanemariv.

The global atmospheric 14C bomb peak from 1963 is reflected in 14C activity of natural archives like tree rings, speleothems, corrals, sediments, etc. The attenuation and time delay of the peak in the archives compared to the atmospheric one can be used as a tool to study the carbon cycle of interest. The sediment cores from lakes Kozjak, Prošće, Gradinsko and Kaluđerovac from the Plitvice Lakes, karst area in Croatia, were retrieved in two sampling campaigns in 2003 and in 2011 on different locations and different lake depths. Some results of 14C activity in the sediment cores dated by 210Pb and 137Cs have already been reported. Here we present new results for the Lake Kaluđerovac and Lake Kozjak cores collected at the deepest points of the lakes, dated by 210Pb. In addition, 14C activity of laminated tufa that grew from 1979 to 2005 on a wooden pillar immersed in the Korana River is also presented. The 14C bomb-peak reflection is observed in carbonate and organic fractions of the sediment cores from the middle of lakes, and also in carbonate fraction of the laminated tufa, with attenuation and delay ranging from 28 to 36 years. The intensity of attenuation and delay compared to the atmospheric bomb peak in the laminated tufa and sediments will be discussed in relation with the lakes size and the sampling location.

Hrvatsko društvo za zaštitu od zračenja (HDZZ) bira vodstvo Društva svake 4 godine. Izborna skupština Zbora članova HDZZ-a se tradicionalno održava tijekom simpozija. Međutim, simpozij koji je trebao biti organiziran tijekom 2021. godine, odgođen je predvidivo za 2023. godinu zbog pandemije COVID-19. Dosadašnjem vodstvu mandat je produljen za šest mjeseci do listopada 2021., te je Izborna skupština Zbora članova HDZZ-a organizirana 6. listopada 2021. na Institutu Ruđer Bošković u Zagrebu. Sudjelovala su 33 člana Društva, što je bilo dovoljno da prema Statutu HDZZ-a izborna skupština bude pravovaljana. Predsjedavajući Zbora Željko Grahek podnio je izvještaj o radu Zbora u proteklom mandatu (2017. – 2021.) naglasivši da tijekom 2020. i 2021. i nije bilo posebne aktivnosti Zbora upravo zbog pandemijskih uvjeta. Predsjednica Društva Ines Krajcar Bronić podnijela je izvještaj o radu Upravnog odbora u proteklom mandatu. Znatno više aktivnosti, uključujući i organizaciju 12. simpozija, provedeno je u prvoj polovini mandata. Sekcija mladih organizirala je Prvi i Drugi skup sekcije mladih HDZZ-a, 2018. i 2020. godine, a tijekom 12. simpozija organizirano je neformalno druženje mladih HDZZ-a sa sudionicima simpozija. Raspisani su natječaji za najbolji rad mladih znanstvenika i stručnjaka iz područja zaštite od zračenja ili znanosti o zračenju. Na natječaje raspisane 2017. i 2021. nije bilo prijavljenih kandidata, tako da HDZZ nije imao predstavnika u natjecanju mladih na europskim kongresima IRPA 2018. i 2022. godine. Na natječaju iz 2019. godine nagradu je osvojio Marko Gerić te je predstavljao HDZZ na 15. Kongresu IRPA koji se održao online u siječnju 2021. Društvo je redovno sudjelovalo sa svojim predstavnikom na sastancima europskih društava za zaštitu od zračenja. U listopadu 2019. godine organiziran je skup u Zagrebu, na kojem je sudjelovalo 25 predstavnika 15 europskih društava. Napomenimo da je to bio posljednji takav skup uživo, a nakon toga su skupovi 2020. i 2021. održani online. U proteklom razdoblju provedena je revizija članstva te je smanjen broj članova na trenutnih 121. Društvo je imalo i plodnu suradnju s društvima u regiji, a posebno treba naglasiti suradnju sa Društvom za zaštitu od zračenja Srbije i Crne Gore (DZZSCG) i Slovenskim društvom za zaštitu od zračenja. Predstavnici tih društava redovno su sudjelovali na simpozijima HDZZ-a, a predstavnici HDZZ-a na simpozijima koje je organiziralo DZZSCG. Rizničarka Jasminka Senčar je u svom financijskom izvještaju naglasila da je Društvo i dalje likvidno i da redovno ispunjava svoje financijske obveze. U ime Nadzornog odbora izvještaj je podnijela Gorana Karanović naglasivši da je Nadzorni odbor imao uvid u rad Upravnog odbora tijekom cijelog mandata i da nisu bile uočene nepravilnosti u radu. Nakon što su svi izvještaji prihvaćeni, članovi vodstva Društva u razdoblju 2017. – 2021. dobili su razrješnice i pristupilo se utvrđivanju kandidata za funkcije u Društvu i članstvo u Upravnom i Nadzornom odboru. Nakon potvrđivanja izborne liste pristupilo se glasovanju i Izborno povjerenstvo je nakon prebrojavanja glasova izvijestilo o rezultatima. Za predsjednicu HDZZ-a izabrana je Ivana Coha, a za dopredsjednika Branko Petrinec. Za tajnicu je izabrana Renata Ban te za rizničarku Iva Franulović. Za predsjedavajućeg Zbora ponovno je izabran Željko Grahek. Izabrani članovi Upravnog odbora su: Tomislav Bituh, Hrvoje Hršak, Željka Knežević Medija, Marija Majer, Luka Pavelić, Marina Poje Sovilj i Jelena Popić. Za članove Nadzornog odbora izabrani su: Marko Gerić, Gorana Karanović i Ines Krajcar Bronić. Prije završetka Zbora, bivša predsjednica dala je nekoliko prijedloga za rad Upravnog odbora u novom mandatu, a novoizabrana predsjednica pismom je zahvalila na povjerenju.

U ovom izvješću prikazujemo rezultate mjerenja aktivnosti 14C u uzorcima vode (točnije, u otopljenom anorganskom ugljiku, DIC, u vodi) rijeke Save s 2 lokacije (lijeva i desna obala akumulacije Brežice, 4 puta godišnje) i u uzorcima ribe (2 uzorka godišnje). Uzorkovanja i mjerenja provedena su tijekom 2020. godine, za potrebe Obratovalnega monitoringa radioaktivnosti v okolici NEK v povezavi s HE Brežice za leti 2020 in 2021 – mjerenje 14C aktivnosti u uzorcima vode i riba.

Crops can be used for food, feed, fiber or fuel. In order to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, one of the solution is to produce biofuels which can substitute fossil fuels and are in theory carbon neutral. The production of crops for biofuel competes with production for food at arable land. In order to work together with food production, the 2nd and 3rd generations of biofuels use crop residue after food farming, such as stems and lignocelluloses, and algae. There are subsidies for introduction of bio- component in fuels and thus the bio-component fraction should be accurately known. Measurement of the 14C activity of fuel is the best option to determine a fraction of the biogenic component, since the biogenic material contains 100 % of the natural 14C activity, while fossil material is practically free of 14C. Measurement of 14C activity is often expensive and time consuming. A direct measurement of the 14C activity in liquid fuel by liquid scintillation counter (LSC) is a simple and fast technique for determination of the bio-component fraction in the liquid fuel. The data evaluation technique developed at the radiocarbon Laboratory of the Ruđer Bošković Institute does not depend on the exact chemical composition of the liquid and gives reliable results for not-highly quenched samples. For highly quenched samples (dark colored) the accelerator mass spectrometry can be successfully used.

Sekcija mladih organizirala je Prvi i Drugi skup sekcije mladih HDZZ-a, 2018. i 2020. godine, a tijekom 12. simpozija organizirano je neformalno druženje mladih HDZZ-a sa sudionicima simpozija. Raspisani su natječaji za najbolji rad mladih znanstvenika i stručnjaka iz područja zaštite od zračenja ili znanosti o zračenju. Na natječaje raspisane 2017. i 2021. nije bilo prijavljenih kandidata, tako da HDZZ nije imao predstavnika u natjecanju mladih na europskim kongresima IRPA 2018. i 2022. godine. Na natječaju iz 2019. godine nagradu je osvojio Marko Gerić te je predstavljao HDZZ na 15. Kongresu IRPA koji se održao online u siječnju 2021. Društvo je redovno sudjelovalo sa svojim predstavnikom na sastancima europskih društava za zaštitu od zračenja. U listopadu 2019. godine organiziran je skup u Zagrebu, na kojem je sudjelovalo 25 predstavnika 15 europskih društava. Napomenimo da je to bio posljednji takav skup uživo, a nakon toga su skupovi 2020. i 2021. održani online. U proteklom razdoblju provedena je revizija članstva te je smanjen broj članova na trenutnih 121. Društvo je imalo i plodnu suradnju s društvima u regiji, a posebno treba naglasiti suradnju sa Društvom za zaštitu od zračenja Srbije i Crne Gore (DZZSCG) i Slovenskim društvom za zaštitu od zračenja. Predstavnici tih društava redovno su sudjelovali na simpozijima HDZZ-a, a predstavnici HDZZ-a na simpozijima koje je organiziralo DZZSCG. Rizničarka Jasminka Senčar je u svom financijskom izvještaju naglasila da je Društvo i dalje likvidno i da redovno ispunjava svoje financijske obveze. U ime Nadzornog odbora izvještaj je podnijela Gorana Karanović naglasivši da je Nadzorni odbor imao uvid u rad Upravnog odbora tijekom cijelog mandata i da nisu bile uočene nepravilnosti u radu. Nakon što su svi izvještaji prihvaćeni, članovi vodstva Društva u razdoblju 2017. – 2021. dobili su razrješnice i pristupilo se utvrđivanju kandidata za funkcije u Društvu i članstvo u Upravnom i Nadzornom odboru. Nakon potvrđivanja izborne liste pristupilo se glasovanju i Izborno povjerenstvo je nakon prebrojavanja glasova izvijestilo o rezultatima. Za predsjednicu HDZZ-a izabrana je Ivana Coha, a za dopredsjednika Branko Petrinec. Za tajnicu je izabrana Renata Ban te za rizničarku Iva Franulović. Za predsjedavajućeg Zbora ponovno je izabran Željko Grahek. Izabrani članovi Upravnog odbora su: Tomislav Bituh, Hrvoje Hršak, Željka Knežević Medija, Marija Majer, Luka Pavelić, Marina Poje Sovilj i Jelena Popić. Za članove Nadzornog odbora izabrani su: Marko Gerić, Gorana Karanović i Ines Krajcar Bronić. Prije završetka Zbora, bivša predsjednica dala je nekoliko prijedloga za rad Upravnog odbora u novom mandatu, a novoizabrana predsjednica pismom je zahvalila na povjerenju.

The wooden Romanesque Crucifix from Collection of Sacral Art in Poreč has been restored 1994-1999 in Conservation department of Split when the multidisciplinary research detected that original Christus triumphans has been transformed into Cristus dolorens in the early 18th century. Project Ars lignea: the Woodcarving Art Heritage of the North Adriatic from 1300 until 1600 (the University of Rijeka) involved the new possibility of radiocarbon dating of original wood (poplar). A sample was taken from the Christ's corpus. The procedure of radiocarbon dating of wood, performed at the Zagreb Radiocarbon Laboratory, usually involves the so-called A-B-A or acid-base-acid chemical preclearing. The sample was inspected by microscope in order to remove larger foreign material, washed with ultrapure water and then subsequently treated by HCl, NaOH solution and again by HCl. This procedure removes carbonates and large organic molecules present in soil: fulvic and humic acids. However, it does not remove organic varnishes or other synthetic materials that might have been applied to the artefact. Since these coatings contain organic molecules, dating may lead to erroneous dates. When the coating is obvious, or there are indications that the artefact had been treated with synthetic coatings, a series of organic solvents is used for washing the sample before A- B-A procedure. The washing starts with a non-polar solvent, followed by a solvent with higher polarity and eventually ends with the most polar solvent, i.e. water. Here we present a case of a wood sample taken from the Christus dolorens that did not seem to have been treated with coatings. However, its 14C activity and δ13C value proved it was treated with resins of fossil origin. In repeated measurements, it was proved that the procedure of solvent cleaning we use is efficient in removing the coating contaminates.
