This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on a steel-reinforced polyurethane (SRPU) composite system with a mineral interlayer, designed for the protection of existing structures. The composite SRPU was reinforced with unidirectional steel textile embedded in polyurethane matrix PS. In the study, SRPU was applied to a brick substrate via a layer of lime- or cement-based mortar of a thickness of 3 mm, 6 mm, or 10 mm. Single-lap shear tests (SLSTs) were carried out on specimens with and without a mortar interlayer. The reference specimens without a mineral interlayer carried higher loads than the specimens with an interlayer. An increase in the interlayer thickness reduced the shear bond strength. The stiffness of the bond under shear of the tested systems was unaffected by the presence of the mineral interlayer. The mechanical properties of the applied mortars influenced the observed failure modes. The tested SRPU system demonstrated notable efficiency in monotonic testing, outperforming previously reported results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Trichotillomania, also known as hair‐pulling disorder, is a chronic psychiatric condition with a fluctuating course in which an individual pulls out their hair, leading to visible hair loss and psychosocial sequelae. Due to the unknown pathogenesis, the treatment of this disorder is complex and remains a challenge for dermatologists and psychiatrists. Since guidelines for treating trichotillomania are lacking and, consequently, no common treatment strategy exists, we decided to perform a large‐scale, global retrospective cohort study to assess the characterized real‐world prescription patterns in treating trichotillomania. Methods: The research used the TrinetX database for patients with trichotillomania (ICD 10 – F63.3) within the European and the United States Collaborative Network (EC and UC, respectively). After consulting with a psychodermatology expert, a list of 25 medications was investigated. Results: Data on the prescription drugs of 1,275 patients from the EC and 109,741 patients from the UC were collected. In both the EC and UC cohorts, benzodiazepine derivatives, particularly lorazepam and midazolam, were the most commonly prescribed sedatives/hypnotics. Antipsychotic prescriptions, primarily haloperidol, followed benzodiazepines. After the trichotillomania diagnosis, notable changes in drug prescriptions for the EC cohort, including an increased likelihood of receiving acetylcysteine, haloperidol, quetiapine, sertraline, olanzapine, and risperidone were observed. The UC cohort showed minimal changes. Overall, both cohorts leaned toward benzodiazepine prescriptions (37% UC, 21% EC) and had limited antidepressant usage. Haloperidol (19.3%) and quetiapine (15.1%) were commonly prescribed in both cohorts. Conclusions: The results of our study indicate that the real‐world prescription patterns for trichotillomania differ significantly from the expert‐proposed therapeutic approach and point toward the necessity of creating standards of pharmacological care and better education. Background/Objectives: Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder affecting over 60 million people worldwide, with both physical and psychological impacts due to the visible lesions and associated somatic symptoms. This study aimed to assess disease acceptance among psoriasis patients and to explore its correlation with disease severity, itch intensity, and quality of life (QoL) Methods: The study included 166 psoriasis patients, comprising 101 men and 65 women, all with a disease duration of at least one year. Clinical and psychological aspects of psoriasis were comprehensively assessed using various standardized tools, along with a demographic questionnaire. Results: The study found that psoriasis patients had a mean illness acceptance score of 25.1 points, with most respondents (44%) exhibiting a moderate level of acceptance. A high level of acceptance was observed in 28% of participants, while an equal proportion of patients (28%) demonstrating low acceptance, with no significant gender-based differences. Acceptance was negatively correlated with disease severity (PASI score), quality of life impairment (DLQI), and itch intensity (NRS), indicating that lower acceptance was linked to more severe symptoms. Additionally, a slight negative correlation was observed between acceptance and disease duration, while acceptance levels were unaffected by factors such as education, relationship status, or age of disease onset. Conclusions: A comprehensive approach to psoriasis treatment should address not only the physical aspects but also the psychological challenges faced by patients, with a particular focus on improving disease acceptance as a coping strategy. The paper presents the results of experimental and numerical tests on barrel vaults with backfill material. The thickness, internal span, and rise of the vaults were 125 mm, 2000 mm, and 730 mm, respectively. In experimental studies, vaults with backfill of expanded clay aggregate or granite aggregate were tested. Moreover, three types of extrados finishing were considered in the experiments: masonry with flush joints, PVC film, and steel angles attached to the bricks. The numerical simulations increased the number of cases analyzed by conducting a parametric analysis for four additional backfill materials with varying bulk density or internal friction angle, as well as modifying the friction coefficient at the backfill-vault interface for each of the analyzed materials. The main goal of the analyses was to investigate the impact of the bulk density, the internal friction angle of the backfill material, and the friction coefficient between the backfill and the vault on the load-bearing capacity of the buried vault. Both the laboratory tests and numerical simulations indicate a significant impact of the internal friction angle, bulk density of the backfill materials, and the finishing method of the extrados of the vault on the load-bearing capacity of buried vaults. Background: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs) are synthetic peptides that mimic the natural activity of GLP-1, widely known for lowering blood glucose levels and promoting weight reduction. These characteristics make them a valuable tool in managing type 2 diabetes and obesity-related conditions. Recent findings indicate that GLP1-RAs may also offer therapeutic benefits in managing hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic inflammatory skin disorder closely associated with metabolic abnormalities, including obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. This review explores the potential role of GLP1-RAs in managing HS. Methods: A systematic review was conducted by searching electronic databases, including MEDLINE and Google Scholar, without date limitations. Key search terms included "GLP-1" or "GLP-1 agonists" combined with "hidradenitis suppurativa" or "acne inversa". Inclusion criteria were set for studies reporting on the use of GLP1-RAs as a treatment for HS, with articles discussing theoretical applications excluded. Data synthesis included findings from 25 relevant studies. Results: The analysis revealed that GLP1-RAs, specifically liraglutide and semaglutide, led to significant reductions in weight and systemic inflammation in HS patients. Notably, improvements in lesion severity and quality of life were reported. The anti-inflammatory effects of GLP1-RAs were attributed to the suppression of key inflammatory pathways involving TNF-α, IL-17, and NF-κB. Conclusions: GLP1-RAs demonstrate significant potential as an adjunct therapy for HS, addressing both the metabolic and inflammatory aspects of the condition. Background: Chronic pruritus of unknown origin (CPUO) is a highly debilitating disease that lacks effective treatment. There have been case reports of effective use of Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors in CPUO, including a case treated with baricitinib, a selective JAK 1/2 inhibitor. Objectives: To evaluate if itch in a cohort of CPUO patients was effectively reduced after treatment with baricitinib. Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective case series examining all patients with CPUO who were treated with baricitinib from February 2022 to August 2023 at the National Skin Center, Singapore. Itch scores on a 0–10 numerical rating scale (NRS) at 0.5‐point intervals were recorded and analyzed over time. Results: Sixteen patients (56% women, mean age of 62.2 ± 19.7 years old) with CPUO were included in the analysis. Their mean [range] duration of chronic itch was 15.4 [1–50] years, and the mean follow‐up period of baricitinib treatment was 10.2 ± 6.7 months. The median [IQR] NRS itch score before and after baricitinib treatment were 8.5 [6.5–10.0] and 3.5 [1.25–5.0], respectively, with a mean reduction in the itch score of 4.9 ± 2.7 (p < 0.0001). All except one patient reported significant improvement in itch severity. There were no reports of symptomatic side effects, except for a drop in hemoglobin in a patient with thalassemia and a dry throat in another patient. There were five cases of mild elevation in creatine kinase levels, three of which normalized over time, and two cases of mild elevation in creatinine levels. Conclusion: This study suggests that baricitinib can effectively reduce pruritus in patients with CPUO and supports the conduct of randomized placebo‐controlled trials to better elucidate the efficacy of JAK inhibitors in management of CPUO. Background: Neurofilament light chain (NfL) has been identified as a biomarker in neuroaxonal injury. Cutaneous nerve injury resulting from inflammation and/or forced scratching may also potentially affect serum NfL (sNfL) levels. Objectives: We aimed to explore the relationship between sNfL levels and the severity of skin inflammation and scratch lesions in patients with pruritus. Methods: In this cross‐sectional pilot study, we measured the sNfL levels of 10 patients with pruritus of different aetiologies, and calculated age‐ and BMI‐adjusted sNfL percentiles based on a normative database consisting of 4532 control individuals. Next, we investigated the relationship between the levels of sNfL and the severity of skin inflammation and scratching injuries in these patients using a newly‐created Skin Inflammation and Scratch Lesions (SISL) score. Results: A positive correlation was observed between sNfL levels and the severity of skin inflammation and scratch lesions as measured by the SISL score (Spearman's rho = 0.70, p = 0.031). When correlated separately, both the "skin inflammation only" and "scratch lesions only" scores correlated positively with sNfL levels (Spearman's rho = 0.68, p = 0.031; Spearman's rho = 0.66, p = 0.041, respectively). Introduction: The level of acceptance of acne can have a substantial impact on improving patients' mood and quality of life. Aim: To investigate the level of acne vulgaris acceptance among young patients and its correlation with disease severity, quality of life, and feelings of stigmatization. Material and methods: The study was conducted on 213 young individuals diagnosed with acne. A variety of questionnaires were employed to measure the psychological aspects of the condition, including illness acceptance, quality of life, and feeling of stigmatization. Results: Based on the Global Evaluation Acne (GEA) scale, 45% of participants had mild acne, 31.7% had minimal acne, and 23.3% had moderate acne. The Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS) scores ranged from 13 to 40, with a mean of 37.0 ±5.2 points. Males had higher illness acceptance (mean score: 37.7 vs. 36.5 points; p = 0.027). Most participants (87.6%) had high illness acceptance. The greatest challenge was adjusting to disease limitations. A significant negative correlation was found between acne severity and illness acceptance (r = –0.277; p < 0.001), between AIS scores and both QoL impairment (measured by the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and the Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI)) (r = –0.499 and r = –0.621, respectively; p < 0.001 for both) as well as between AIS scores and the 6-Item Stigmatization Scale (6-ISS) (r = –0.621, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The level of acne acceptance depends on gender and the severity of acne lesions. Based on the study results, we hypothesize that an intervention aimed at increasing the level of disease acceptance could improve patients' psychological well-being and ability to cope with the condition. Introduction: The focus in dermatology has shifted from solely treating skin conditions to considering the quality of life (QoL) of patients and their family members. Aim: To identify and categorise instruments that assess the impact of chronic skin diseases on the QoL of family members and caregivers. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using the Scopus and Medline databases, with search terms related to QoL, dermatology, and family/caregivers. Articles published up to January 2024 were reviewed, and relevant instruments were categorised. Results: The search yielded 2799 papers, of which 153 were reviewed in detail. Twenty instruments were identified and categorised into generic, dermatology-specific, and disease-specific tools. Conclusions: The review highlights the importance of assessing family QoL in dermatology. Integrating these tools into clinical practice can enhance support for family members, improving overall patient care. Background: The urge to scratch is, by definition, an integral part of the perception of itch. Consequently, scratch lesions can reflect the patient's perception of itch, and underlying disease. However, only little is known about scratch patterns among different itchy conditions. Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, we analyzed and compared the prevalence, type, site, and distribution of scratch lesions in patients across 11 diagnostic groups of itchy conditions. Statistical analysis was performed using chi‐squared test or Mann–Whitney U tests when appropriate. Results: A total of 124 patients with acute or chronic pruritus were enrolled, 82 (66.1%) of whom presented scratch lesions. Among these, erosions/excoriations were the most prevalent (56.1%), followed by erythematous striated lesions (36.6%) and crusts (35.4%). Scratch lesions were present in descending prevalence on the arms (78.2%), trunk (75.6%), legs (74.4%), and head (19.2%). Distinct scratch lesions were identified in some diagnoses, enabling us to develop a diagnostic algorithm. Conclusions: In the present study, we characterized scratch patterns in various itchy skin conditions and developed a diagnostic algorithm accordingly. Many factors contribute to successful nerve reconstruction. The correct technique of anastomosis is one of the key elements that determine the final result of a surgery. The aim of this study is to examine how useful an electromyography (EMG) can be as an objective intraoperative anastomosis assessment method.

Introduction: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that negatively impacts patients' quality of life (QoL) and mental health. Itch and pain are prevalent symptoms of psoriasis and contribute to the psychosocial burden of this disease. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of skin pain on the prevalence and severity of symptoms of anxiety and depression and on the QoL in psoriasis patients. Methods: The studied population comprised 106 adults with psoriasis (34% female; mean age 42.1 ± 13.0 years). Disease severity was measured with the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI). The intensity of skin pain was assessed with the NRS and the Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ). The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) questionnaires were used to estimate the severity of depression and anxiety, respectively, as was the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Quality of life (QoL) was studied using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Results: Regarding anxiety assessment, females reported significantly higher scores with the HADS-A (8.42 ± 4.85 points vs. 5.14 ± 3.9 points; p < 0.001) and the GAD-7 compared to men (7.50 ± 5.58 points vs. 5.24 ± 4.79 points; p = 0.036). Similarly, the severity of depression was significantly higher in women, as measured with the PHQ-9 (7.50 ± 5.58 points vs. 5.24 ± 4.79 points, p = 0.021). Psoriasis patients with skin pain scored significantly higher in HADS Total score (p = 0.043), HADS-A (p = 0.022), PHQ-9 (p = 0.035), and DLQI (p < 0.001) than the rest of the studied group. The intensity of skin pain measured with the SF-MPQ correlated significantly with HADS Total score (p = 0.021), HADS-A (p < 0.001), HADS-D (p = 0.038), and PHQ-9 (p < 0.001). Additionally, there was a significant correlation between the intensity of cutaneous pain assessed using the VAS and the PHQ-9 (p = 0.022). Conclusions: Skin pain significantly influences the well-being of patients with psoriasis as well as the symptoms of anxiety and depression. In particular, women with psoriasis are at increased risk of developing anxiety and depression. Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the pilosebaceous unit in intertriginous body areas, and recent research suggests an association with periodontitis. Aim: To assess oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with HS diagnosed additionally with peri-odontitis and to compare it to patients with periodontitis alone. Material and methods: The study involved 55 HS patients, with 25 in the HS + P group (both HS and periodontitis) and matched controls in the periodontitis-only group (P group). Outcomes were assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire. Results: No significant difference was observed in the mean OHIP-14 total score between the HS + P group and the P group. Patients with HS + P were less likely to undergo the dental evaluation and floss their teeth less frequently compared to the P group. Conclusions: The findings reveal that the coexistence of HS in patients with periodontitis does not significantly influence OHRQoL. Lower dental evaluation frequency and less frequent flossing in HS+P patients suggest reduced attention to oral health practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Psoriasis is a common inflammatory disease that is often associated with itch and pain. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics of skin pain among patients with psoriasis. Materials: A total of 106 patients diagnosed with psoriasis were included in the study (34% female; mean age 42.1 ± 13.0 years). Disease severity was assessed using the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI). Itch severity was evaluated using the numeric rating scale (NRS) and 4-Item Itch Score (4IIS). The intensity of skin pain was measured through the NRS, short-form McGill pain questionnaire (SF-MPQ), visual analog scale (VAS), and Douleur Neuropathique-4 questionnaire (DN4). Results: In the past week, 84.9% of psoriasis patients reported itch, while 50% of them reported skin pain. The average NRS for itch was 4.52 ± 2.88 points, and the 4IIS yielded a mean score of 6.79 ± 4.37 points. In terms of the intensity of cutaneous pain, the mean NRS was 2.42 ± 2.96 points; the SF-MPQ score averaged 4.84 ± 7.51 points; and the VAS score was 1.92 ± 2.65 points. Furthermore, 17% of adult psoriasis patients reported neuropathic pain. In 84.9% of the participants, skin pain was concurrent with areas affected by itch, while 18.9% of patients exhibited cutaneous pain encompassing all itchy areas. The pain NRS demonstrated significant correlations with the SF-MPQ (r = 0.531, p < 0.001), VAS (r = 0.779, p < 0.001), itch NRS (r = 0.551, p < 0.001), and 4IIS (r = 0.569, p < 0.001). No association was found between the pain NRS and PASI or disease duration. Conclusions: Skin pain of mild intensity and itch of moderate intensity are prevalent symptoms in psoriasis patients. Ultrahigh-performance fiber-reinforced cement-based composite (UHPFRC) made with waste derived from scrap tires and oil refineries was tested in this study. The UHPFRC sample exhibited a maximum compressive strength of about 189 MPa at the end of 28 days. Steel fibers were recovered from scrap tires and were added up to 3% by volume in the UHPFRC samples. Such additions reduced cement flow by 11% but improved compressive strength by 21%. The equilibrium catalyst particles (ECAT) disposed of by oil refineries were used in amounts of up to 15% by weight as a replacement for cement in such UHPFRC samples. These aluminosilicate materials are spherical in shape and have a porous microstructure, which was found to reduce the cement flow by absorbing more free water onto their surfaces. They also reduced the heat and strength developments at early stages. However, the total cost of the final cement-based mixture and associated CO2 emissions were reduced by up to 7% and 15% due to the inclusion of the ECAT particles. These findings help to optimize the ECAT and recovered steel fibers in the UHPFRC mix design, and such waste valorization strategies can help achieve the goal of becoming carbon neutral.
