Since the pioneering experiment, E89-009 studying hypernuclear spectroscopy using the $(e,e^{\prime}K^+)$ reaction was completed, two additional experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, were performed at Jefferson Lab. These later experiments used a modified experimental design, the "tilt method", to dramatically suppress the large electromagnetic background, and allowed for a substantial increase in luminosity. Additionally, a new kaon spectrometer, HKS (E01-011), a new electron spectrometer, HES, and a new splitting magnet were added to produce precision, high-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy. These two experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, resulted in two new data sets, producing sub-MeV energy resolution in the spectra of ${}^{7}_{\Lambda}\text{He}$, ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$ and ${}^{28}_{\Lambda}\text{Al}$ and ${}^{7}_{\Lambda}\text{He}$, ${}^{10}_{\Lambda}\text{Be}$, ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$ and ${}^{52}_{\Lambda}\text{V}$. All three experiments obtained a ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$, spectrum, which is the most characteristic $p$-shell hypernucleus and is commonly used for calibration. Independent analyses of these different experiments demonstrate excellent consistency and provide the clearest level structure to date of this hypernucleus as produced by the $(e,e^{\prime}K^+)$ reaction. This paper presents details of these experiments, and the extraction and analysis of the observed ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$ spectrum.

Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) on the proton has been studied at Jefferson Lab using the exclusive photon electroproduction reaction (e p --> e p gamma). This paper gives a detailed account of the analysis which has led to the determination of the structure functions P_LL-P_TT/epsilon and P_LT, and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha_E(Q^2) and beta_M(Q^2) at values of the four-momentum transfer squared Q^2= 0.92 and 1.76 GeV^2. These data, together with the results of VCS experiments at lower momenta, help building a coherent picture of the electric and magnetic GPs of the proton over the full measured Q^2-range, and point to their non-trivial behavior., Comment: version 2: modified according to PRC Editor's and Referee's recommendations. The kaon electroproduction reaction 1H(e,e'K+)Lambda was studied as a function of the virtual-photon four-momentum, Q2, total energy, W, and momentum transfer, t, for different values of the virtual- photon polarization parameter. Data were taken at electron beam energies ranging from 3.40 to 5.75 GeV. The center of mass cross section was determined for 21 kinematics corresponding to Q2 of 1.90 and 2.35 GeV2 and the longitudinal, sigmaL, and transverse, sigmaT, cross sections were separated using the Rosenbluth technique at fixed W and t. The separated cross sections reveal a flat energy dependence at forward kaon angles not satisfactorily described by existing electroproduction models. Influence of the kaon pole on the cross sections was investigated by adopting an off-shell form factor in the Regge model which better describes the observed energy dependence of sigmaT and sigmaL., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. We have extracted QCD matrix elements from our data on double polarized inelastic scattering of electrons on nuclei. We find the higher twist matrix element \tilde{d_2}, which arises strictly from quark- gluon interactions, to be unambiguously non zero. The data also reveal an isospin dependence of higher twist effects if we assume that the Burkhardt-Cottingham Sum rule is valid. The fundamental Bjorken sum rule obtained from the a0 matrix element is satisfied at our low momentum transfer., Comment: formerly "Nachtmann Moments of the Proton and Deuteron Spin Structure Functions"

We have examined the spin structure of the proton in the region of the nucleon resonances (1.085 GeV < W < 1.910 GeV) at an average four momentum transfer of Q^2 = 1.3 GeV^2. Using the Jefferson Lab polarized electron beam, a spectrometer, and a polarized solid target, we measured the asymmetries A_parallel and A_perp to high precision, and extracted the asymmetries A_1 and A_2, and the spin structure functions g_1 and g_2. We study the homogeneous and the spatially periodic instabilities in a nematic liquid crystal layer subjected to steady plane {\em Couette} or {\em Poiseuille} flow. The initial director orientation is perpendicular to the flow plane. Weak anchoring at the confining plates and the influence of the external {\em electric} and/or {\em magnetic} field are taken into account. Approximate expressions for the critical shear rate are presented and compared with semi-analytical solutions in case of Couette flow and numerical solutions of the full set of nematodynamic equations for Poiseuille flow. In particular the dependence of the type of instability and the threshold on the azimuthal and the polar anchoring strength and external fields is analysed., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Motivated by Lehmann-like rotation phenomena in cholesteric drops we study the transverse drift of two types of cholesteric fingers, which form rotating spirals in thin layers of cholesteric liquid crystal in an ac or dc electric field. We show that electrohydrodynamic effects induced by Carr-Helfrich charge separation or flexoelectric charge generation can describe the drift of cholesteric fingers. We argue that the observed Lehmann-like phenomena can be understood on the same basis., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

Motivated by experiments in electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals with homeotropic alignment we study the coupled amplitude equations describing the formation of a stationary roll pattern in the presence of a weakly-damped mode that breaks isotropy. The equations can be generalized to describe the planarly aligned case if the orienting effect of the boundaries is small, which can be achieved by a destabilizing magnetic field. The slow mode represents the in-plane director at the center of the cell. The simplest uniform states are normal rolls which may undergo a pitchfork bifurcation to abnormal rolls with a misaligned in-plane director.We present a new class of defect-free solutions with spatial modulations perpendicular to the rolls. In a parameter range where the zig-zag instability is not relevant these solutions are stable attractors, as observed in experiments. We also present two-dimensionally modulated states with and without defects which result from the destabilization of the one-dimensionally modulated structures. Finally, for no (or very small) damping, and away from the rotationally symmetric case, we find static chevrons made up of a periodic arrangement of defect chains (or bands of defects) separating homogeneous regions of oblique rolls with very small amplitude. These states may provide a model for a class of poorly understood stationary structures observed in various highly-conducting materials ("prechevrons" or "broad domains")., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

We study theoretically the instabilities induced by a linearly polarized ordinary light wave incident at a small oblique angle on a thin layer of homeotropically oriented nematic liquid crystal with special emphasis on the dye-doped case. We consider the orientational instabilities, both homogeneous and spatially periodic, developing in a nematic liquid crystal under rectilinear oscillatory Couette flow for director alignment perpendicular to the flow plane. Using numerical and analytical approaches we determine the critical amplitude of oscillatory flow instabilities, the critical wave number and the symmetry of the destabilizing mode. It was found, that by varying of the oscillatory flow frequency the instability changes its temporal symmetry. The mechanism of this transition is coupled with the inertia of the nematic fluid. We also shown that an electric field applied to the nematic layer can induce switching between instabilities with different spatial and temporal symmetries. We report experimental and theoretical results on the flexoelectric instability and crossover between flexoelectric domains and electroconvection in a hybrid aligned nematic MBBA under d.c. voltage. At threshold a spatially periodic flexoelectric deformation in the form of longitudinal domains (along the planar director) was observed. With increasing voltage the director deviation out of the initial plane becomes clearly detectable. Observations of tracers show that hydrodynamic flow develops inside the flexoelectric stripe pattern in the form of circular orbits perpendicular to the domain stripes. With further increasing d.c. voltage electroconvection sets in in the form of drifting oblique rolls inside the flexoelectric domains., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. To Appear in Mol. Cryst. Liq. We analyse the homogeneous instabilities in a nematic liquid crystal subjected to plane steady Couette or Poiseuille flow in the case when the director is pre-aligned perpendicular to the flow plane taking into account weak anchoring at the confining surfaces. The critical shear rate decreases for decreasing anchoring strength and goes to zero in the limit of torque-free boundary conditions. For Poiseuille flow one has two types of instability depending on the values of the azimuthal ($W_a$) and polar ($W_p$) surface anchoring strengths. The critical line in $(W_a,W_p)$ space which separates the two instabilities regimes is obtained., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the orientational behaviour of a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal subjected to an oscillatory plane Poiseuille flow produced by an alternating pressure gradient. For small pressure amplitudes the director oscillates within the flow plane around the initial homeotropic position, whereas for higher amplitudes a spatially homogeneous transition to out-of-plane director motion was observed for the first time. The orientational transition was found to be supercritical and the measured frequency dependence of the critical pressure amplitude in the range between 2 and 20 Hz was in quantitative agreement with a recent theory., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Europhys. Elliptic shear applied to a homeotropically oriented nematic above the electric bend Freedericks transition (FT) generates slow precession of the director. The character of the accompanying nonlinear waves changes from diffusive phase waves to dispersive ones exhibiting spirals and spatio-temporal chaos as the FT is approached from above. An exact solution of the flow alignment equations captures the observed precession and predicts its reversal for non-flow aligning materials. A study of secondary instabilities in ac-driven electroconvection of a planarly aligned nematic liquid crystal is presented. At low frequencies one has a transition from normal rolls to a zig-zag pattern and at high frequencies a direct transition from normal to abnormal rolls. The crossover defines a codimension-2 point. This point is also the origin of a line of homoclinic bifurcations, which enable the transition from zig-zags to abnormal rolls at lower frequencies., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

The dynamics of curved vortex filaments is studied analytically and numerically in the framework of a three-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE). It is shown that a straight vortex line is unstable with respect to spontaneous stretching and bending in a substantial range of parameters of the CGLE, resulting in formation of persistent entangled vortex configurations. The boundary of the three-dimensional instability in parameter space is determined. Near the stability boundary, the supercritical saturation of the instability is found, resulting in the formation of stable helicoidal vortices., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Of the various interesting solutions found in the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation for anisotropic systems, the phase-chaotic states show particularly novel features. They exist in a broader parameter range than in the isotropic case, and often even broader than in one dimension. They typically represent the global attractor of the system. There exist two variants of phase chaos: a quasi-one dimensional and a two-dimensional solution. For over 25 years it is known that the roll structure of electroconvection (EC) in the dielectric regime in planarly aligned nematic liquid crystals has, after a transition to defect chaos, the tendency to form chevron structures. We show, with the help of a coarse-grained model, that this effect can generally be expected for systems with spontaneously broken isotropy, that is lifted by a small external perturbation. The linearized model as well as a nonlinear extension are compared to simulations of a system of coupled amplitude equations which generate chevrons out of defect chaos. Quasi two-dimensional pattern forming systems with spontaneously broken isotropy represent a novel symmetry class, that is experimentally accessible in electroconvection of homeotropically aligned liquid crystals. We present a weakly nonlinear analysis leading to amplitude equations which couple the short-wavelength patterning mode with the Goldstone mode resulting from the broken isotropy. The new coefficients in these equations are calculated from the hydrodynamics. Simulations exhibit a new type of spatio-temporal chaos at onset.
