Search

Fruit preparations are used in various forms in the food industry. For example, they are used as an ingredient in dairy products such as yogurt with added fruit. The dispersed fruit pieces can be described as soft particles with viscoelastic material behavior. The continuous phase is represented by fluids with complex flow behavior depending on the formulation. Characterization has shown that this can be described by the Herschel-Bulkley model. Since damage to fruit pieces is undesirable in industrial transport processes, the potential for damage to fruit pieces during transport of pipes in cross-sectional constrictions is analyzed. The analysis is performed numerically using the homogenized lattice Boltzmann method and validated by an experiment on industrial fruit preparations at pilot plant scale. The results show a strong dependence of the damage potential on the (local) Metzner-Reed Reynolds number.

This study presents an innovative direct numerical simulation approach for complex particle systems with irregular shapes and large numbers. Using partially saturated methods, it accurately models arbitrary shapes, albeit at considerable computational cost when integrating a compatible contact model. The introduction of a novel parallelization strategy significantly improves the performance of the contact model, enabling efficient four-way coupled simulations. Through hindered settling studies, the criticality of the explicit contact model for maintaining simulation accuracy is highlighted, especially at high particle volume fractions and low Archimedes numbers. The feasibility of simulating thousands of arbitrarily shaped convex particles is demonstrated with up to 1934 surface-resolved particles. The study also confirms the grid independence and linear convergence of the method. It shows for the first time that cube swarms settle 13 to 26% slower than swarms of volume-equivalent spheres across different Archimedes numbers (500 to 2000) and particle volume fractions (10 to 30%). These findings emphasize the shape dependence of particle systems and suggest avenues for exploring their nuanced dynamics.

This study addresses the challenge of simulating realistic particle systems by proposing a novel particle decomposition scheme that improves the parallel performance of surface resolved particle simulations. Realistic particle systems often involve large numbers of particles and complex particle shapes. The resulting need to account for shape factors requires the inclusion of even more particles to obtain statistically meaningful results. However, the computational cost increases with the number of particles, making efficient parallelization crucial. Therefore, the proposed scheme aims to improve the scalability by optimizing the communication and data management between processors. Through hindered settling experiments, the applicability and performance of the novel particle decomposition scheme are thoroughly investigated using the homogenized lattice Boltzmann method. The results show that the proposed method significantly improves the performance, especially in scenarios with a large number of particles, by reducing communication constraints and improving scalability. This research contributes to the advancement of computational methods for efficient study of complex particle systems and provides valuable insights for future developments in this field.

Context. The existence of magnetic fields in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is largely unconstrained. Their detection is important as magnetic fields can have a significant impact on the evolution of the CGM and, in turn, the fields can serve as tracers for dynamical processes in the CGM. Aims. With Faraday rotation of polarised background sources, we aim to detect a possible excess of the rotation measure in the surrounding area of nearby galaxies. Methods. We use 2,461 residual rotation measures (RRMs) observed with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR), where the foreground contribution from the Milky Way is subtracted. The RRMs are then studied around a subset of 183 nearby galaxies that was selected by apparent $B$-band magnitude. Results. We find that, in general, the RRMs show no significant excess for small impact parameters (i.e. the perpendicular distance to the line of sight). However, if we only consider galaxies at higher inclination angles and sight lines that pass close to the minor axis of the galaxies, we find significant excess at impact parameters of less than 100 kpc. The excess in |RRM| is 3.7 $\rm rad\,m^{-2}$ with an uncertainty between $\pm 0.9~\rm rad\,m^{-2}$ and $\pm 1.3~\rm rad\,m^{-2}$ depending on the statistical properties of the background (2.8$\sigma$-4.1$\sigma$). With electron densities of ~$10^{-4}~\rm cm^{-3}$ this suggests magnetic field strengths of a few tenths of a micro Gauss. Conclusions. We summarize the second radio synchrotron background workshop, which took place June 15-17, 2022 in Barolo, Italy. This meeting was convened because available measurements of the diffuse radio zero level continue to suggest that it is several times higher than can be attributed to known Galactic and extragalactic sources and processes, rendering it the least well understood electromagnetic background at present and a major outstanding question in astrophysics. The workshop agreed on the next priorities for investigations of this phenomenon, which include searching for evidence of the Radio Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, carrying out cross-correlation analyses of radio emission with other tracers, and supporting the completion of the 310 MHz absolutely calibrated sky map project., Comment: 34 pages, 19 figures, 3 tables, accepted to PASP, updated to in press version

We report new observations of "Hanny's Voorwerp" (hereafter HV) taken from the second data release of the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). HV is a highly-ionised region in the environs of the galaxy IC2497, first discovered by the Galaxy Zoo project. The new 150MHz observations are considered in the context of existing multi-frequency radio data and archival narrow-band imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope, centred on the [Oiii] emission line. The combined sensitivity and spatial resolution of the LoTSS data -- which far exceed what was previously available at radio frequencies -- reveal clear evidence for large-scale extended emission emanating from the nucleus of IC2497. The radio jet appears to have punched a hole in the neutral gas halo, in a region co-located with HV. The new 150MHz data, alongside newly-processed archival 1.64GHz eVLA data, reveal that the extended emission has a steep spectrum, implying an age $>10^8$yr. The jet supplying the extended 150MHz structure must have "turned off" long before the change in X-ray luminosity reported in recent works. In this picture, a combination of jet activity and the influence of the radiatively efficient active galactic nucleus are responsible for the unusual appearance of HV., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next ground-based $\gamma$-ray observatory in the TeV $\gamma$-ray spectral region operating with the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique. It is based on almost 70 telescopes of different class diameters - LST, MST and SST of 23, 12, and 4 m, respectively - to be installed in two sites in the two hemispheres (at La Palma, Canary Islands, and near Paranal, Chile). Several thousands of reflecting mirror tiles larger than 1 m$^2$ will be produced for realizing the segmented primary mirrors of a so large number of telescopes. Almost in parallel, the ASTRI Mini-Array (MA) is being implemented in Tenerife (Canary Islands), composed of nine 4 m diameter dual-mirror Cherenkov telescopes (very similar to the SSTs). We completed the mirror production for all nine telescopes of the ASTRI MA and two MST telescopes (400 segments in total) using the cold glass slumping replication technology. The results related to the quality achieved with a so large-scale production are presented, also discussing the adopted testing methods and approaches. We present new radio continuum images of the edge-on starburst galaxy NGC 5775, from LOFAR (140 MHz) and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array CHANG-ES survey (1500 MHz). We trace the non-thermal radio halo up to 13 kpc from the disc, measuring the non-thermal spectral index and estimating the total equipartition magnetic field strength ($\approx13\mu$G in the disc and $\approx7\mu$G above the plane). The radio halo has a similar extent at both frequencies, displays evidence for localized cosmic ray streaming coinciding with prominent H$\alpha$ filaments and vertical extensions of the regular magnetic field, and exhibits a boxy morphology especially at 140 MHz. In order to understand the nature of the disc-halo flow, we extend our previous model of cosmic ray propagation by implementing an iso-thermal wind with a tunable `flux tube' (approximately hyperboloidal) geometry. This updated model is successful in matching the vertical distribution of non-thermal radio emission, and the vertical steepening of the associated spectral index, in a consistent conceptual framework with few free parameters. Our new model provides the opportunity to estimate the mass outflow driven by the star formation process, and we find an implied rate of $\dot{M}\approx3-6\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}}$ ($\approx40-80$ per cent of the star formation rate) if the escape velocity is reached, with substantial uncertainty arising from the poorly-understood distribution of ISM material entrained in the vertical flow. We present a study of $\gamma$-ray emission from the core-collapse supernova remnant Cas~A in the energy range from 0.1GeV to 10TeV. We used 65 hours of VERITAS data to cover 200 GeV - 10 TeV, and 10.8 years of \textit{Fermi}-LAT data to cover 0.1-500 GeV. The spectral analysis of \textit{Fermi}-LAT data shows a significant spectral curvature around $1.3 \pm 0.4_{stat}$ GeV that is consistent with the expected spectrum from pion decay. Above this energy, the joint spectrum from \textit{Fermi}-LAT and VERITAS deviates significantly from a simple power-law, and is best described by a power-law with spectral index of $2.17\pm 0.02_{stat}$ with a cut-off energy of $2.3 \pm 0.5_{stat}$ TeV. These results, along with radio, X-ray and $\gamma$-ray data, are interpreted in the context of leptonic and hadronic models. Assuming a one-zone model, we exclude a purely leptonic scenario and conclude that proton acceleration up to at least 6 TeV is required to explain the observed $\gamma$-ray spectrum. From modeling of the entire multi-wavelength spectrum, a minimum magnetic field inside the remnant of $B_{\mathrm{min}}\approx150\,\mathrm{\mu G}$ is deduced., Comment: 33 pages, 9 Figures, 6 Tables

Blazars are known for their variability on a wide range of timescales at all wavelengths. Most studies of TeV gamma-ray blazars focus on short timescales, especially during flares. With a decade of observations from the Fermi-LAT and VERITAS, we present an extensive study of the long-term multi-wavelength radio-to-gamma-ray flux-density variability, with the addition of a couple of short-time radio-structure and optical polarization observations of the blazar 1ES 1215+303 (z=0.130), with a focus on its gamma-ray emission from 100 MeV to 30 TeV. Multiple strong GeV gamma-ray flares, a long-term increase in the gamma-ray and optical flux baseline and a linear correlation between these two bands are observed over the ten-year period. Typical HBL behaviors are identified in the radio morphology and broadband spectrum of the source. Three stationary features in the innermost jet are resolved by VLBA at 43.1, 22.2, and 15.3 GHz. We employ a two-component synchrotron self-Compton model to describe different flux states of the source, including the epoch during which an extreme shift in energy of the synchrotron peak frequency from infrared to soft X-rays is observed., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We report on variability and correlation studies using multiwavelength observations of the blazar Mrk 421 during the month of February, 2010 when an extraordinary flare reaching a level of $\sim$27~Crab Units above 1~TeV was measured in very-high-energy (VHE) $\gamma$-rays with the VERITAS observatory. This is the highest flux state for Mrk 421 ever observed in VHE $\gamma$-rays. Data are analyzed from a coordinated campaign across multiple instruments including VHE $\gamma$-ray (VERITAS, MAGIC), high-energy (HE) $\gamma$-ray (Fermi-LAT), X-ray (Swift}, RXTE, MAXI), optical (including the GASP-WEBT collaboration and polarization data) and radio (Mets\"ahovi, OVRO, UMRAO). Light curves are produced spanning multiple days before and after the peak of the VHE flare, including over several flare `decline' epochs. The main flare statistics allow 2-minute time bins to be constructed in both the VHE and optical bands enabling a cross-correlation analysis that shows evidence for an optical lag of $\sim$25-55 minutes, the first time-lagged correlation between these bands reported on such short timescales. Limits on the Doppler factor ($\delta \gtrsim 33$) and the size of the emission region ($ \delta^{-1}R_B \lesssim 3.8\times 10^{13}\,\,\mbox{cm}$) are obtained from the fast variability observed by VERITAS during the main flare. Analysis of 10-minute-binned VHE and X-ray data over the decline epochs shows an extraordinary range of behavior in the flux-flux relationship: from linear to quadratic to lack of correlation to anti-correlation. A search of the first Data Release of the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) Survey discovered the exceptionally red transient VVV-WIT-01 ($H-K_s=5.2$). It peaked before March 2010, then faded by $\sim$9.5 mag over the following two years. The 1.6--22 $\mu$m spectral energy distribution in March 2010 was well fit by a highly obscured black body with $T \sim 1000$ K and $A_{K_s} \sim 6.6$ mag. The source is projected against the Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) SDC G331.062$-$0.294. The chance projection probability is small for any single event ($p \approx 0.01$ to 0.02) which suggests a physical association, e.g. a collision between low mass protostars. However, black body emission at $T \sim 1000$ K is common in classical novae (especially CO novae) at the infrared peak in the light curve, due to condensation of dust $\sim$30--60 days after the explosion. Radio follow up with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) detected a fading continuum source with properties consistent with a classical nova but probably inconsistent with colliding protostars. Considering all VVV transients that could have been projected against a catalogued IRDC raises the probability of a chance association to $p=0.13$ to 0.24. After weighing several options, it appears likely that VVV-WIT-01 was a classical nova event located behind an IRDC., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

With 8 hours of observations, VERITAS confirms the detection of two very high energy gamma-ray sources. The gamma-ray binary LS 5039 is detected with a statistical significance of $8.8\sigma$. The measured flux above 1 TeV is $(2.5 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-12} \rm \, cm^{-2} \, s^{-1}$ near inferior conjunction and $(7.8 \pm 2.8) \times 10^{-13} \rm \, cm^{-2} \, s^{-1}$ near superior conjunction. The pulsar wind nebula HESS J1825-137 is detected with a statistical significance of $6.7\sigma$ and a measured flux above 1 TeV of $(3.9 \pm 0.8) \times 10^{-12} \rm \, cm^{-2} \, s^{-1}$., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

The isotopes $^{60}$Fe and $^{26}$Al originate from massive stars and their supernovae, reflecting ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy. We studied the gamma-ray emission from these isotopes at characteristic energies 1173, 1332, and 1809 keV with over 15 years of SPI data, finding a line flux in $^{60}$Fe combined lines of $(0.31\pm 0.06) \times 10^{-3}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and the $^{26}$Al line flux of $(16.8\pm 0.7) \times 10^{-4}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ above the background and continuum emission for the whole sky. Based on the exponential-disk grid maps, we characterise the emission extent of $^{26}$Al to find scale parameters $R_0 =7.0^{+1.5}_{-1.0}$ kpc and $z_0=0.8^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ kpc, however the $^{60}$Fe lines are too weak to spatially constrain the emission. Based on a point source model test across the Galactic plane, the $^{60}$Fe emission would not be consistent with a single strong point source in the Galactic center or somewhere else, providing a hint for a diffuse nature. We carried out comparisons of emission morphology maps using different candidate-source tracers for both $^{26}$Al and $^{60}$Fe emissions, and suggests that the $^{60}$Fe emission is more likely to be concentrated towards the Galactic plane. We determine the $^{60}$Fe/$^{26}$Al $\gamma$-ray flux ratio at $(18.4\pm4.2)\,\%$ , when using a parameterized spatial morphology model. Across the range of plausible morphologies, it appears possible that $^{26}$Al and $^{60}$Fe are distributed differently in the Galaxy. Using the best fitting maps for each of the elements, we constrain flux ratios in the range 0.2--0.4. Precision predictions play an important role in the search for indirect New Physics effects in the Higgs sector itself. For the electroweak (EW) corrections of the Higgs bosons in extended Higgs sectors several renormalization schemes have been worked out that provide gauge-parameter-independent relations between the input parameters and the computed observables. Our recently published program codes 2HDECAY and ewN2HDECAY allow for the computation of the EW corrections to the Higgs decay widths and branching ratios of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) and the Next-to-Minimal-2HDM (N2HDM) for different renormalization schemes of the scalar mixing angles. In this paper, we present a comprehensive and complete overview over the relative size of the EW corrections to the branching ratios of the 2HDM and N2HDM neutral Higgs bosons for different applied renormalization schemes. We quantify the size of the EW corrections of Standard Model(SM)- and non-SM-like Higgs bosons and moreover also identify renormalization schemes that are well-behaved and do not induce unnaturally large corrections. We furthermore pin down decays and parameter regions that feature large EW corrections and need further treatment in order to improve the predictions. Our study sets the scene for future work in the computation of higher-order corrections to the decays of non-minimal Higgs sectors.

HESS J0632+057 is a gamma-ray binary composed of a compact object orbiting a Be star with a period of about $315$ days. Extensive X-ray and TeV gamma-ray observations have revealed a peculiar light curve containing two peaks, separated by a dip. We present the results of simultaneous observations in hard X-rays with NuSTAR and in TeV gamma-rays with VERITAS, performed in November and December 2017. These observations correspond to the orbital phases $\phi\approx0.22$ and $0.3$, where the fluxes are rising towards the first light-curve peak. A significant variation of the spectral index from 1.77$\pm$0.05 to 1.56$\pm$0.05 is observed in the X-ray data. The multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SED) derived from the observations are interpreted in terms of a leptonic model, in which the compact object is assumed to be a pulsar and non-thermal radiation is emitted by high-energy electrons accelerated at the shock formed by the collision between the stellar and pulsar wind. The results of the SED fitting show that our data can be consistently described within this scenario, and allow us to estimate the magnetization of the pulsar wind at the location of the shock formation. The constraints on the pulsar-wind magnetization provided by our results are shown to be consistent with those obtained from other systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

In this paper we compute the electroweak corrections to the charged Higgs boson decay into a $W$ boson and a neutral Higgs boson in the CP-conserving NMSSM. We calculate the process in a general $R_\xi$ gauge and investigate the dependence of the loop-corrected decay width on the gauge parameter $\xi$. The gauge dependence arises from the mixing of different loop orders. Phenomenology requires the inclusion of mass and mixing corrections to the external Higgs bosons in order to match the experimentally measured mass values. As a result, we move away from a strict one-loop calculation and consequently mix orders in perturbation theory. Moreover, determination of the loop-corrected masses in an iterative procedure also results in the mixing of different loop orders. Gauge dependence then arises from the mismatch with tree-level Goldstone boson couplings that are applied in the loop calculation, and from the gauge dependence of the loop-corrected masses themselves. We find that the gauge dependence is significant.

We examine the remnant phase of radio galaxies using three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of relativistic jets propagating through cluster environments. By switching the jets off once the lobes have reached a certain length we can study how the energy distribution between the lobes and shocked intra-cluster medium compares to that of an active source, as well as calculate synchrotron emission properties of the remnant sources. We see that as a result of disturbed cluster gas beginning to settle back into the initial cluster potential, streams of dense gas are pushed along the jet axis behind the remnant lobes, causing them to rise out of the cluster faster than they would due to buoyancy. This leads to increased adiabatic losses and a rapid dimming. The rapid decay of total flux density and surface brightness may explain the small number of remnant sources found in samples with a high flux density limit and may cause analytic models to overestimate the remnant fraction expected in sensitive surveys such as those now being carried out with LOFAR., Comment: 13 pages, 11 colour figures. The extragalactic background light (EBL), a diffuse photon field in the optical and infrared range, is a record of radiative processes over the Universe's history. Spectral measurements of blazars at very high energies ($>$100 GeV) enable the reconstruction of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the EBL, as the blazar spectra are modified by redshift- and energy-dependent interactions of the gamma-ray photons with the EBL. The spectra of 14 VERITAS-detected blazars are included in a new measurement of the EBL SED that is independent of EBL SED models. The resulting SED covers an EBL wavelength range of 0.56--56 $\mu$m, and is in good agreement with lower limits obtained by assuming that the EBL is entirely due to radiation from cataloged galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Emission from the radioactive trace element $^{26}$Al has been observed throughout the Milky Way with the COMPTEL and INTEGRAL satellites. In particular the Doppler shifts measured with INTEGRAL connect $^{26}$Al with superbubbles, which may guide $^{26}$Al flows off spiral arms in the direction of Galactic rotation. In order to test this paradigm, we have performed galaxy-scale simulations of superbubbles with $^{26}$Al injection in a Milky Way-type galaxy. We produce all-sky synthetic $\gamma-$ray emission maps of the simulated galaxies. We find that the 1809keV emission from the radioactive decay of $^{26}$Al is highly variable with time and the observer's position. This allows us to estimate an additional systematic variability of 0.2dex for a star formation rate derived from $^{26}$Al for different times and measurement locations in Milky Way-type galaxies. High-latitude morphological features indicate nearby emission with correspondingly high integrated $\gamma-$ray intensities. We demonstrate that the $^{26}$Al scale height from our simulated galaxies depends on the assumed halo gas density. We present the first synthetic 1809keV longitude-velocity diagrams from 3D hydrodynamic simulations. The line-of-sight velocities for $^{26}$Al can be significantly different from the line-of-sight velocities associated with the cold gas. Over time, $^{26}$Al velocities consistent with the INTEGRAL observations, within uncertainties, appear at any given longitude, broadly supporting previous suggestions that $^{26}$Al injected into expanding superbubbles by massive stars may be responsible for the high velocities found in the INTEGRAL observations. Cosmic rays play a pivotal role in launching galactic winds, particularly in quiescently star-forming galaxies where the hot gas alone is not sufficient to drive a wind. Except for the Milky Way, not much is known about the transport of cosmic rays in galaxies. In this Letter, we present low-frequency observations of the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4565 using the LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR). With our deep 144-MHz observations, we obtain a clean estimate of the emission originating from old cosmic-ray electrons (CRe), which is almost free from contamination by thermal emission. We measured vertical profiles of the non-thermal radio continuum emission that we fitted with Gaussian and exponential functions. The different profile shapes correspond to 1D cosmic-ray transport models of pure diffusion and advection, respectively. We detect a warp in the radio continuum that is reminiscent of the previously known HI warp. Because the warp is not seen at GHz-frequencies in the radio continuum, its minimum age must be about 100 Myr. The warp also explains the slight flaring of the thick radio disc that can otherwise be well described by a Gaussian profile with an FWHM of 65 arcsec (3.7 kpc). The diffusive radio halo together with the extra-planar X-ray emission may be remnants of enhanced star-forming activity in the past where the galaxy had a galactic wind, as GHz-observations indicate only a weak outflow in the last 40 Myr. Using the Continuum HAloes in Nearby Galaxies - an EVLA Survey (CHANG-ES) radio continuum data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in two frequency bands (C-band, L-band), we analyzed the radio properties, including polarization and the transport processes of the CR electrons (CREs), in the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4013. Supplementary LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) data at 150MHz are used to study the low-frequency properties of this galaxy and X-ray (Chandra, XMM-Newton) data are used to investigate the central region. The central point source dominates the radio continuum in both CHANG-ES bands, but no clear AGN classification is possible at this time. The scale height analysis shows that Gaussian fits, with halo scale heights of 1.2 kpc in C-band, 2.0 kpc in L-band, and 3.1 kpc at 150 MHz, better represent the intensity profiles than do exponential fits. The radio continuum halo of NGC 4013 in C-band is rather small, while the low-frequency LOFAR data reveal a large halo. The polarization data reveal plane-parallel, regular magnetic fields within the entire disk and vertical halo components out to heights of about 6 kpc indicating the presence of an axisymmetric field having a radial component pointing outwards. The mean magnetic field strength of the disk of NGC 4013 of 6.6 $\mu$G (using the revised equipartition formula) is rather small. The interaction and the low star formation rate (SFR) across the disk of NGC 4013 probably influence the appearance of its radio continuum. Several observable quantities give consistent evidence that the CR transport in the halo of NGC 4013 is diffusive: the frequency dependence of the synchrotron scale height, the disk/halo flux density ratio, the vertical profile of the synchrotron spectral index, the small propagation speed measured modeled with spinnaker, and the low temperature of the X-ray emitting hot gas., Comment: 24 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The angular size of a star is a critical factor in determining its basic properties. Direct measurement of stellar angular diameters is difficult: at interstellar distances stars are generally too small to resolve by any individual imaging telescope. This fundamental limitation can be overcome by studying the diffraction pattern in the shadow cast when an asteroid occults a star, but only when the photometric uncertainty is smaller than the noise added by atmospheric scintillation. Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes used for particle astrophysics observations have not generally been exploited for optical astronomy due to the modest optical quality of the mirror surface. However, their large mirror area makes them well suited for such high-time-resolution precision photometry measurements. Here we report two occultations of stars observed by the VERITAS Cherenkov telescopes with millisecond sampling, from which we are able to provide a direct measurement of the occulted stars' angular diameter at the $\leq0.1$ milliarcsecond scale. This is a resolution never achieved before with optical measurements and represents an order of magnitude improvement over the equivalent lunar occultation method. We compare the resulting stellar radius with empirically derived estimates from temperature and brightness measurements, confirming the latter can be biased for stars with ambiguous stellar classifications., Comment: Accepted for publication in Nature Astronomy

We present in this paper our new program package ewN2HDECAY for the calculation of the partial decay widths and branching ratios of the Higgs bosons of the Next-to-Minimal 2-Higgs Doublet Model (N2HDM). The N2HDM is based on a general CP-conserving 2HDM which is extended by a real scalar singlet field. The program computes the complete electroweak one-loop corrections to all non-loop-induced two-body on-shell Higgs boson decays in the N2HDM and combines them with the state-of-the-art QCD corrections that are already implemented in the existing program N2HDECAY. Most of the independent input parameters of the electroweak sector of the N2HDM are renormalized in an on-shell scheme. The soft-$\mathbb{Z}_2$-breaking squared mass scale $m_{12}^2$ and the vacuum expectation value $v_S$ of the $SU(2)_L$ singlet field, however, are renormalized with $\overline{\text{MS}}$ conditions, while for the four scalar mixing angles $\alpha _i$ ($i=1,2,3$) and $\beta$ of the N2HDM, several different renormalization schemes are applied. By giving out the leading-order and the loop-corrected partial decay widths separately from the branching ratios, the program ewN2HDECAY not only allows for phenomenological analyses of the N2HDM at highest precision, it can also be used for a study of the impact of the electroweak corrections and the remaining theoretical uncertainty due to missing higher-order corrections based on a change of the renormalization scheme. The input parameters are then consistently calculated with a parameter conversion routine when switching from one renormalization scheme to the other. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major next-generation observatory for ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. It will improve the sensitivity of current ground-based instruments by a factor of five to twenty, depending on the energy, greatly improving both their angular and energy resolutions over four decades in energy (from 20 GeV to 300 TeV). This achievement will be possible by using tens of imaging Cherenkov telescopes of three successive sizes. They will be arranged into two arrays, one per hemisphere, located on the La Palma island (Spain) and in Paranal (Chile). We present here the optimised and final telescope arrays for both CTA sites, as well as their foreseen performance, resulting from the analysis of three different large-scale Monte Carlo productions., Comment: 48 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

We present our calculation of the two-loop corrections of ${\cal O}(\alpha_t^2)$ to the neutral Higgs boson masses of the CP-violating Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (NMSSM). The calculation is performed in the Feynman diagrammatic approach in the gaugeless limit at vanishing external momentum. We apply a mixed $\overline{\mathrm{DR}}$-on-shell (OS) renormalization scheme for the NMSSM input parameters. Furthermore, we exploit a $\overline{\mathrm{DR}}$ as well as an OS renormalization in the top/stop sector. The corrections are implemented in the Fortran code NMSSMCALC for the calculation of the Higgs spectrum both in the CP-conserving and CP-violating NMSSM. The code also provides the Higgs boson decays including the state-of-the-art higher-order corrections. The corrections computed in this work improve the already available corrections in NMSSMCALC which are the full one-loop corrections without any approximation and the two-loop ${\cal O}(\alpha_t \alpha_s)$ corrections in the gaugeless limit and at vanishing external momentum. Depending on the chosen parameter point, we find that the ${\cal O}(\alpha_t \alpha_s + \alpha_t^2)$ corrections add about 4-7% to the one-loop mass of the SM-like Higgs boson for $\overline{\mathrm{DR}}$ renormalization in the top/stop sector and they reduce the mass by about 6-9% if OS renormalization is applied. For an estimate of the theoretical uncertainty we vary the renormalization scale and change the renormalization scheme and show that care has to be taken in the corresponding interpretation.
