Featured Application: In this scientific article, we present an environmentally friendly method for increasing the nitrogen content on the surface of activated carbons, which leads to enhanced CO2 adsorption of these carbons. The commercially available activated carbon was modified using barrier and spark discharge low-temperature nitrogen plasma treatment. The samples were investigated using nitrogen sorption at a temperature of −196 °C, XRD, SEM, and FTIR methods, and elemental analysis. The nitrogen content on the surface was increased, but other properties, such as specific surface area, total pore volume, pseudocrystallite height, and pseudocrystallite width, remained unchanged. The activated carbons after nitrogen plasma treatment indicated higher CO2 adsorption than the pristine ones. Since the investigated materials only differed in their nitrogen content, it has been unequivocally demonstrated that the increased presence of nitrogen is responsible for the enhanced adsorption of CO2. Tar formation is a significant issue during biomass gasification. Catalytic removal of tars with the use of nickel catalyst allows to obtain high conversion rate but coke formation on catalysts surface lead to its deactivation. Toluene decomposition as a tar imitator was studied in gliding discharge plasma-catalytic system with the use of 5%, 10% and 15% by weight Ni and NiO catalyst on Al2O3 (α-Al2O3) and Peshiney (γ-Al2O3) carrier in gas composition similar to the gas after biomass pyrolysis. The optimal concentration of nickel was identified to be 10% by weight on Al2O3. It was stable in all studied initial toluene concentrations, discharge power while C7H8 conversion rate remained high – up to 82%. During the process, nickel catalysts were deactivated by sooth formation on the surface. On catalysts surface, toluene decomposition products were identified including benzyl alcohol and 3-hexen-2-one.

This study investigated the effects of Rhizoctonia solani J.G. Kühn infestation on the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and biochemical composition of ten cultivars of chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum × morifolium /Ramat./ Hemsl.) to bring new insights for future disease management strategies and the development of resistant chrysanthemum cultivars. The chrysanthemum plants were propagated vegetatively and cultivated in a greenhouse under semi-controlled conditions. VOCs emitted by the plants were collected using a specialized system and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Biochemical analyses of the leaves were performed, including the extraction and quantification of chlorophylls, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds. The emission of VOCs varied among the cultivars, with some cultivars producing a wider range of VOCs compared to others. The analysis of the VOC emissions from control plants revealed differences in both their quality and quantity among the tested cultivars. R. solani infection influenced the VOC emissions, with different cultivars exhibiting varying responses to the infection. Statistical analyses confirmed the significant effects of cultivar, collection time, and their interaction on the VOCs. Correlation analyses revealed positive relationships between certain pairs of VOCs. The results show significant differences in the biochemical composition among the cultivars, with variations in chlorophyll, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds content. Interestingly, R. solani soil and leaf infestation decreased the content of carotenoids in chrysanthemums. Plants subjected to soil infestation were characterized with the highest content of phenolics. This study unveils alterations in the volatile and biochemical responses of chrysanthemum plants to R. solani infestation, which can contribute to the development of strategies for disease management and the improvement of chrysanthemum cultivars with enhanced resistance to R. solani. Gliding discharge and coupled plasma-catalytic system were used for toluene conversion in a gas composition such as the one obtained during pyrolysis of biomass. The chosen catalyst was G-0117, which is an industrial catalyst for methane conversion manufactured by INS Pulawy (Poland). The effects of discharge power, initial concentration of toluene, gas flow rate and the presence of the bed of the G-0117 catalyst on the conversion of C7H8, a model tars compounds were investigated. Conversion of coluene increases with discharge power and the highest one was noted in the coupled plasma-catalytic system. It was higher than that in the homogeneous system of gliding discharge. When applying a reactor with reduced G-0117 and CO (0.15 mol%), CO2 (0.15 mol%), H2 (0.30 mol%), N2 (0.40 mol%), 4000 ppm of toluene and gas flow rate of 1.5 Nm3/h, the conversion of toluene was higher than 99%. In the coupled plasma-catalytic system with G-0117 methanation of carbon oxides was observed.

We investigate the possibility of modification of SnS2 powder through sonochemical synthesis with the addition of an organic ligand. For that purpose, two organic dyes are used, Phenol Red and Anthraquinone Violet. All obtained powders are characterized using XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, and UV-Vis investigations. Synthesized samples showed composition and structural properties typical for sonochemically synthesized SnS2. However, investigation with the Tauc method revealed that SnS2 powder modified with Phenol Red exhibits a significant shift in value of optical bandgap to 2.56 eV, while unmodified SnS2 shows an optical bandgap value of 2.42 eV. The modification of SnS2 powder with Anthraquinone Violet was unsuccessful. The obtained nanopowders were utilized as photocatalysts in the process of Metanil Yellow degradation, revealing that SnS2 modified with Phenol Red shows about 23% better performance than the unmodified one. The mean sonochemical efficiency of the performed synthesis is also estimated as 9.35 µg/W. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
