Translation abstract Re‐use of structural elements – quantifiying the ecological potentialThe re‐use of building elements is one of the key strategies for establishing a climate‐friendly and regenerative construction industry. However, building with used load‐bearing components in particular has so far been hampered by both regulatory hurdles and the linear planning process. The re‐use of steel girders from the stairwell tower of a parking garage in Stuttgart is an examplary project that demonstrates the great potential of reusing load‐bearing components. The associated emission savings could be quantified with the help of life cycle assessment. A consideration of the future reusability shows the limits of this method for a comprehensive consideration of the ecological added value. To make these uniformly measurable and thus promote the implementation of a circular economy in the construction industry, the life cycle assessment method must be supplemented by a circularity assessment. Circular house in a steel‐hybrid lightweight construction The circular house in Zurich‐Oerlikon replaces two existing, approx. 100‐year‐old residential buildings, enlarges their surface area and provides living space for more people. Due to the increasing scarcity of resources and the efforts to reduce emissions, new concepts are needed to meet these requirements in the construction industry. The project, realised in a steel composite hybrid construction, allows this approach due to its montierability and demountability. The structure was awarded the Prix Acier by the Swiss Center for Steel Construction (SZS) in 2023 and will be presented in more detail at this point. Sustainable hybrid system made of folded sheet steel and cement‐free concrete In order to address sustainability issues in the construction sector, construction systems that are lower in emissions, durable, and suitable for circular reuse and recycling must be employed. This can be achieved through open and adaptive systems which focus on design for disassembly to enable future adaptations and reuse. In Switzerland, where most residential buildings are constructed from concrete and masonry, many buildings are demolished due to their incompatibility with current requirements. This paper introduces an innovative steel‐hybrid construction system for residential buildings, combining adaptability and circular design with performance in ambient temperature and fire conditions. The system uses cold‐formed, open steel profiles in combination with a cement‐free concrete (commercially known as Cleancrete), which fills the cross‐sectional chambers of the steel profiles, stiffening them against deformation and contributing to fire protection. Although Cleancrete has minimal impact on the load‐bearing capacity under ambient‐temperature conditions, using a material with lower CO2 emissions and reducing overall steel consumption results in a favorable environmental balance compared to other construction methods. A fire test on a 3.3‐m‐high column, supported by numerical simulations, also demonstrated that the system can be used in fire conditions for multi‐story buildings with up to five floors without additional precautions. Spent coffee grounds (SCG) contain coffee oil with a significant amount of unsaturated fatty acids. In a publicly funded research project, SCG from the industrial production of instant coffee was investigated regarding their applications in the material processing industry. The isolation, functionalization, and application of the unsaturated fatty acids was a central objective. Fatty acids enclosed in the SCG were released in the form of fatty acid methyl esters by means of an in situ process of esterification and transesterification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigations on deconstruction and reuse of prestressed hollow core slabs Prestressed hollow core slabs as precast elements show potential for efficient reuse in terms of circularity. Within this article, the results of a research project evaluating suitability for deconstruction and reusability of prestressed hollow core slabs are shown. For this purpose, comparative experimental studies were conducted on deconstructed slabs, having been subjected to defined loads, as well as not previously loaded slabs. By erecting a sample ceiling, the prestressed hollow core slabs were loaded for 69 d. The main challenge in deconstructing the ceiling appeared to be loosening the conventionally grouted longitudinal joints between the elements without damage. Alternatively considered design variants of the joints indicate the suitability to easily improve deconstruction. In 4‐point flexural tests deconstructed as well as non‐preloaded prestressed hollow core slabs displayed a uniform pattern of failure. However, the failure of deconstructed, previously loaded hollow core slabs occurred under lower loads and with less deflection. The fact that all elements exceeded the manufacturer's specifications for bending load‐bearing capacity nevertheless supports the assumption of a high reuse potential of prestressed hollow core slabs. Development of European design regulations for re‐used steel components Until steel production becomes thoroughly CO2‐neutral, it is important to explore and expand alternative ways of constructing climate‐neutral buildings with steel. This includes, in contrast to recycling and retrofitting of old steel structures, the re‐use of steel components. While some European countries already trade and regularly utilize used steel components, this is not yet the case in Germany. The reason for this is the lack of regulations, not only on the technical and scientific side but also in terms of regulation. There are no guidelines for a market with traded construction products in general. Re‐using steel components is particularly beneficial because they are easy to dismantle, store, and flexible for re‐use. In principle, there is no obstacle to the technical regulation of used steel components in a new building context. Currently, an additional annex is being developed in EN 1990‐2 for demolition and processing. For the design of re‐used steel components, which is the focus of the article discussing conditions, concepts, and procedures, an ad‐hoc group has recently been formed in CEN/TC250/SC3, developing proposals for additional design rules. This article also addresses the connection of these rules to EN 1990‐2, which incorporates the specifications of the current CEN/TS 17440. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Besides the generation of aggregates, recycling of mixed construction and demolition waste leads to a more polluted side stream accounting for up to one third of the input materials. This so‐called crushed sand often ends up in landfills and is hence lost for a circular economy. This article reports about the processing of this material using a pilot plant jig. The present work deals with the production of geopolymers from brick flour and mixed rubble using an alkaline activator solution. The study aims to investigate whether these geopolymers can be reactivated several times without having to add new starting material, and how the number of reactivations affects the structure and material properties. Zusammenfassung: Wir leben in einer Zeit, in der in vielen Bereichen unseres Lebens technische Fasern aus Kohlenstoff bzw. Carbon und Glas zum Einsatz kommen. Beispielsweise werden Brillengestelle, Tennisschläger, Fahrräder, Autos, Flugzeuge, Windräder oder Gebäude oftmals vollständig, aber zumindest teilweise aus faserhaltigen Verbindungen hergestellt. So fallen mit der Substitution von Metallen durch Faserverbundwerkstoffe faserhaltige Abfälle an, die bisher noch kein etablierter Teil eines geschlossenen Stoffkreislaufes sind. Aus diesem Grund wird im Rahmen des Projektes „WIRreFa | WIR! recyceln Fasern" in der Region „Elbtal Sachsen" erstmals ein Bündnis für die zirkuläre Kreislauf‐ und Ressourcenwirtschaft von Faserverbundwerkstoffen aufgebaut. Am Beispiel der Carbonbetonbauweise werden die offenen Stoffkreisläufe geschlossen, wobei die einzelnen Prozesse zur Bereitstellung von vermarktbaren matten‐ und stabförmigen Bewehrungen aus recycelten Kohlenstofffasern aufeinander abzustimmen sind. Auf diese Weise sollen die Entwicklungschancen am Standort gestärkt werden, indem vorhandene Prozesse der zirkulären Wertschöpfungsketten komplettiert und neue Entwicklungen angestoßen werden, statt sie auszulagern. Deformation properties of concrete containing 100 % recycled aggregate Through the use of demolition material in the form of broken concrete or masonry as aggregate in the concrete, enormous amounts of the construction waste can be reused, so that a disposal of these material flows is not necessary. On the other hand, primary raw materials for the production of concrete components can be saved, which effectively counteracts the global shortage of sand and gravel. The procedural technical methods for the processing of such demolition materials have been continually developed in recent years and the range of recycled aggregate is far from exhausted. In Germany, the application areas of recycled concrete are defined acc. to normative regulations and the recyclate quantities are limited to a maximum of 45 % of the coarse aggregate depending on the exposure class. With the help of this study, the deformation behavior of R‐concretes with 100 % recycled aggregate will be characterized more detailed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Occasionally, it is assumed that wood can be fed into an endless usage cascade. This assumption is investigated based on data from new and used chipboards, as well as waste wood of category AI–AIII. The results show, based on 468 data sets, that pollutant concentrations in waste wood vary over a wide range. Depending on the sample group, 46 % to 69 % of the samples examined would not be suitable for material use according to the applicable Waste Wood Ordinance. It must be assumed that waste wood already contains pollutants in relevant concentrations after a single use and can therefore only be fed into the material cycle a second time after the results of an analytical examination are available. In fluoropolymers, a large portion or even all of the hydrogen atoms in a polymer chain are replaced by fluorine, which results in a number of special properties such as high chemical and temperature resistance. As a result of this combination of properties, these high‐performance polymers are not replaceable, or only with difficulty, for some applications. The recycling of polymers and the associated closing of material loops is an essential development task for the entire polymer industry. Materials such as fluoropolymers have a special position due to their chemical composition and their low market volume, as they cannot be recycled together with other bulk polymers at the end of their life cycle. Bereits im Jahr 2001 forderte die Europäische Kommission von öffentlichen Auftraggebern die Berücksichtigung ökologischer Faktoren bei der Vergabe von Bauleistungen.1 Die EU setzt sich zum Ziel, eine „moderne [...], ressourceneffi ziente [...] und wettbewerbsfähige [...] Wirtschaft [zu schaffen], in der im Jahr 2050 keine Netto-Treibhausgasemissionen mehr freigesetzt werden".2 Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt sich die Frage, inwiefern das Ziel der Kommission in Deutschland berücksichtigt werden kann oder muss, wobei die Oberschwellenvergabe3 in den Fokus gerückt wird. The building resource pass – a control instrument for effective resource protection in concrete construction The construction sector is one of the most resource‐intensive economic sectors. It is therefore a requirement for builders to keep the materials used completely in the cycle. The documentation of the materials and their connection types forms an essential basis for enabling materials to be reused after dismantling or the end of the first phase of use. The Building Resource Passport is a documentation tool in order to record the detailed material and construction parameters of buildings. Mineral building materials are of particular importance due to their large proportion of mass. The article describes how the building resource pass as a control instrument can contribute to more resource efficiency in construction, with the focus on solid structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Strategies for implementing the circular economy in construction with concrete Concrete is the most widely used building material worldwide. However, CO2 emissions from cement and concrete production must be reduced, production methods improved, and concrete compositions adapted. While the demand for concrete is increasing, fossil fuel reserves and the availability of mineral raw materials are decreasing. In addition, new mineralogical phases are formed during concrete production, which makes true recycling difficult. Implementation of strategies that are in line with circular economy, such as the extension of the use phase and design to re‐use, require a holistic view of the building. Here, digitally networked and model‐based planning, as well as robot‐assisted production of components, offer high potential as they enable the ecologically and cost‐efficient generation of easily detachable connections, easily deconstructable, multifunctional, or flexible structures that are optimized in terms of durability. Technically, many projects could already be implemented in practice, but standards and guidelines must be adapted. The aim of this article is to raise awareness of the necessary change from linear to circular economy in concrete construction, and to provide the planner with simple guidelines for the design to contribute to the responsible use of increasingly scarce resources. Für eine nachhaltige Kreislaufwirtschaft müssen Polymere auf rezyklierte und biobasierte Rohstoffe umgestellt werden, und sie müssen bezüglich der Emissionen CO2‐neutral werden. Dies gilt nicht nur für Strukturpolymere, z. B. in Verpackungen oder technischen Anwendungen, sondern auch für Funktionspolymere in flüssigen Formulierungen: in Klebstoffen oder Schmiermitteln, als Verdickungs‐ oder Dispersionsmittel. Am Ende ihrer Lebensdauer müssen Polymere entweder gesammelt und technisch rezykliert werden oder biologisch abbaubar sein, wenn sie nicht sammelbar sind. Fortschritte in der Polymerchemie, in Anwendungen und durch zunehmend rechnergestützte Methoden der Materialwissenschaft ermöglichen einen ganzheitlichen Ansatz: Polymere werden bereits für ihre Rezyklierbarkeit oder biologische Abbaubarkeit konzipiert. Dieser Aufsatz zeigt, wie neue wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse in Verbindung mit entsprechenden rechtlichen, gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Randbedingungen den Weg zu einer umfassenden Kreislaufwirtschaft für Polymere weisen können.
