4. Potential of typical highland and mountain forests in the Czech Republic for climate-smart forestry: ecosystem-scale drought responses

Abstract

Climate-smart forestry (CSF) consists of an extensive framework of actions directed to mitigating and adapting to global climate change impacts on the resilience and productivity of forest ecosystems. This study investigates the impact of the pan-European 2018 drought on carbon exchange dynamics in typical highland and mountain forests in the Czech Republic, including two coniferous stands (Norway spruce at Bily KHz and Rajec) and one deciduous stand (European beech at Stitna). Our results show that the annual net ecosystem C[O.sub.2] uptake at Rajec decreased by 50% during the drought year in comparison to a reference year with normal climatic conditions. The Bily Kriz stand is less affected by drought, as the local microclimate ensures sufficient water supply. The European beech forest at Stitna is most resilient against drought and its negative impacts--there we detect no differences in carbon exchange dynamics between the drought year and the reference year. We consider the matching of tree species to site conditions as crucial in the context of CSF, specifically regarding the stand response to water limitation and water supply and demand. Successively replacing spruce with beech trees in areas with high water demand but limited water supply, like Rajec, will support the goals of CSF. La foresterie intelligente face au climat (FIC) est constituee d'un cadre detaille d'actions visant a attenuer les impacts du changement climatique sur la resilience et la productivite des ecosystemes forestiers et a s'y adapter. Cette etude porte sur l'impact de la secheresse paneuropeenne de 2018 sur la dynamique des echanges de carbone dans les forets typiques des hautes terres et de montagne en Republique tcheque, incluant deux peuplements resineux (epicea commun a Bily Kriz et Rajec) et un peuplement feuillu (hetre commun a Stitna). Nos resultats montrent que l'absorption annuelle nette de C[O.sub.2] par l'ecosysteme a Rajec a diminue de 50 % l'annee de la secheresse comparativement a une annee de reference avec des conditions climatiques normales. Le site de Bily Kriz a ete moins touche par la secheresse etant donne que le microclimat local a assure un apport en eau suffisant. La foret de hetre commun situee Stitna est tres resiliente face a la secheresse et ses impacts negatifs : dans ce cas nous ne detectons aucune difference dans la dynamique des echanges de carbone entre l'annee de la secheresse et l'annee de reference. Nous considerons que l'appariement des especes d'arbres avec les conditions du site est crucial dans le contexte de la FIC, particulierement en ce qui a trait a la reaction du peuplement a un deficit hydrique ainsi qu'a l'approvisionnement et la demande en eau. Le remplacement successif de l'epicea par le hetre dans les regions qui ont une forte demande en eau mais des reserves limitees, comme Rajec, va soutenir les objectifs de la FIC. Abstract

Forests account for nearly 90 % of the world's terrestrial biomass in the form of carbon and they support 80 % of the global biodiversity. To understand the underlying forest dynamics, we need a long-term but also relatively high-frequency, networked monitoring system, as traditionally used in meteorology or hydrology. While there are numerous existing forest monitoring sites, particularly in temperate regions, the resulting data streams are rarely connected and do not provide information promptly, which hampers real-time assessments of forest responses to extreme climate events. The technology to build a better global forest monitoring network now exists. This white paper addresses the key structural components needed to achieve a novel meta-network. We propose to complement - rather than replace or unify - the existing heterogeneous infrastructure with standardized, quality-assured linking methods and interacting data processing centers to create an integrated forest monitoring network. These automated (research topic-dependent) linking methods in atmosphere, biosphere, and pedosphere play a key role in scaling site-specific results and processing them in a timely manner. To ensure broad participation from existing monitoring sites and to establish new sites, these linking methods must be as informative, reliable, affordable, and maintainable as possible, and should be supplemented by near real-time remote sensing data. The proposed novel meta-network will enable the detection of emergent patterns that would not be visible from isolated analyses of individual sites. In addition, the near real-time availability of data will facilitate predictions of current forest conditions (nowcasts), which are urgently needed for research and decision making in the face of rapid climate change. We call for international and interdisciplinary efforts in this direction.

Here, we investigate the effects of the record-breaking 2018 European heatwave on tree growth and tree water status using a collection of high-temporal resolution dendrometer data from 21 species across 53 sites. Relative to the two preceding years, annual stem growth was not consistently reduced by the 2018 heatwave but stems experienced twice the temporary shrinkage due to depletion of water reserves. Conifer species were less capable of rehydrating overnight than broadleaves across gradients of soil and atmospheric drought, suggesting less resilience toward transient stress. In particular, Norway spruce and Scots pine experienced extensive stem dehydration. Our high-resolution dendrometer network was suitable to disentangle the effects of a severe heatwave on tree growth and desiccation at large-spatial scales in situ, and provided insights on which species may be more vulnerable to climate extremes.

Abstract

Forest models are instrumental for understanding and projecting the impact of climate change on forests. A considerable number of forest models have been developed in the last decades. However, few systematic and comprehensive model comparisons have been performed in Europe that combine an evaluation of modelled carbon and water fluxes and forest structure. We evaluate 13 widely used, state-of-the-art, stand-scale forest models against field measurements of forest structure and eddy-covariance data of carbon and water fluxes over multiple decades across an environmental gradient at nine typical European forest stands. We test the models' performance in three dimensions: accuracy of local predictions (agreement of modelled and observed annual data), realism of environmental responses (agreement of modelled and observed responses of daily gross primary productivity to temperature, radiation and vapour pressure deficit) and general applicability (proportion of European tree species covered). We find that multiple models are available that excel according to our three dimensions of model performance. For the accuracy of local predictions, variables related to forest structure have lower random and systematic errors than annual carbon and water flux variables. Moreover, the multi-model ensemble mean provided overall more realistic daily productivity responses to environmental drivers across all sites than any single individual model. The general applicability of the models is high, as almost all models are currently able to cover Europe's common tree species. We show that forest models complement each other in their response to environmental drivers and that there are several cases in which individual models outperform the model ensemble. Our framework provides a first step to capturing essential differences between forest models that go beyond the most commonly used accuracy of predictions. Abstract

Process-based vegetation models are widely used to predict local and global ecosystem dynamics and climate change impacts. Due to their complexity, they require careful parameterization and evaluation to ensure that projections are accurate and reliable. The PROFOUND Database (PROFOUND DB) provides a wide range of empirical data on European forests to calibrate and evaluate vegetation models that simulate climate impacts at the forest stand scale. A particular advantage of this database is its wide coverage of multiple data sources at different hierarchical and temporal scales, together with environmental driving data as well as the latest climate scenarios. Specifically, the PROFOUND DB provides general site descriptions, soil, climate, CO2, nitrogen deposition, tree and forest stand level, and remote sensing data for nine contrasting forest stands distributed across Europe. Moreover, for a subset of five sites, time series of carbon fluxes, atmospheric heat conduction and soil water are also available. The climate and nitrogen deposition data contain several datasets for the historic period and a wide range of future climate change scenarios following the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, RCP8.5). We also provide pre-industrial climate simulations that allow for model runs aimed at disentangling the contribution of climate change to observed forest productivity changes. The PROFOUND DB is available freely as a “SQLite” relational database or “ASCII” flat file version (at https://doi.org/10.5880/PIK.2020.006/; Reyer et al., 2020). The data policies of the individual contributing datasets are provided in the metadata of each data file. The PROFOUND DB can also be accessed via the ProfoundData R package (https://CRAN.R-project.org/package=ProfoundData; Silveyra Gonzalez et al., 2020), which provides basic functions to explore, plot and extract the data for model set-up, calibration and evaluation.

Abstract

Process-based vegetation models are widely used to predict local and global ecosystem dynamics and climate change impacts. Due to their complexity, they require careful parameterization and evaluation to ensure that projections are accurate and reliable. The PROFOUND Database (PROFOUND DB) provides a wide range of empirical data to calibrate and evaluate vegetation models that simulate climate impacts at the forest stand scale. A particular advantage of this database is its wide coverage of multiple data sources at different hierarchical and temporal scales, together with environmental driving data as well as the latest climate scenarios. Specifically, the PROFOUND DB provides general site descriptions, soil, climate, CO2, nitrogen deposition, tree and forest stand-level, as well as remote sensing data for nine contrasting forest stands distributed across Europe. Moreover, for a subset of five sites, time series of carbon fluxes, atmospheric heat conduction, and soil water are also available. The climate and nitrogen deposition data contain several datasets for the historic period and a wide range of future climate change scenarios following the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, RCP8.5). We also provide pre-industrial climate simulations that allow for model runs aimed at disentangling the contribution of climate change to observed forest productivity changes. Abstract

Carbon allocation plays a key role in ecosystem dynamics and plant adaptation to changing environmental conditions. Hence, proper description of this process in dynamic vegetation models is crucial for the simulations of the impact of climate change on carbon cycling in forests. Here we review how carbon allocation modelling is implemented in 31 dynamic vegetation models to identify the main gaps compared to our theoretical and empirical understanding of carbon allocation. We found that a hybrid approach based on combining several principles and/or types of carbon allocation modelling prevailed in examined models. The analysis revealed that although the number of carbon allocation studies over the last 10 years has substantially increased, some background processes are still insufficiently understood, and some issues in models are frequently oversimplified or even omitted. Hence, current challenges for carbon allocation modelling in forest ecosystems are (i) to overcome remaining limits in process understanding, particularly regarding the impact of disturbances on carbon allocation, accumulation and utilisation of non-structural carbohydrates, and carbon use by symbionts, and (ii) to implement existing knowledge to mechanistic description of carbon allocation in models that would integrate the impact of environmental conditions, disturbances, and seasonal variation in carbon allocation, or (iii) to improve more simplistic models by accounting for the impact of crucial factors affecting carbon allocation in particular environment.

Abstract

Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) has increased substantially since the industrial revolution began, and physiological responses to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations reportedly alter the biometry and wood structure of trees. Additionally, soil nutrient availability may play an important role in regulating these responses. Therefore, in this study, we grew 288 two-year-old saplings of sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) in lamellar glass domes for three years to evaluate the effects of CO2 concentrations and nutrient supply on above- and belowground biomass, wood density, and wood structure. Elevated CO2 increased above- and belowground biomass by 44.3% and 46.9%, respectively. However, under elevated CO2 treatment, sapling wood density was markedly lower (approximately 1.7%), and notably wider growth rings—and larger, more efficient conduits leading to increased hydraulic conductance—were observed. Moreover, despite the vessels being larger in saplings under elevated CO2, the vessels were significantly fewer (p = 0.023). No direct effects of nutrient supply were observed on biomass growth, wood density, or wood structure, except for a notable decrease in specific leaf area. These results suggest that, although fewer and larger conduits may render the xylem more vulnerable to embolism formation under drought conditions, the high growth rate in sessile oak saplings under elevated CO2 is supported by an efficient vascular system and may increase biomass production in this tree species. Nevertheless, the decreased mechanical strength, indicated by low density and xylem vulnerability to drought, may lead to earlier mortality, offsetting the positive effects of elevated CO2 levels in the future. Abstract

Estimation of newly grown needle area, as the most active part of assimilation appa-ratus, is important for better understanding of biochemical processes of trees. This paper investigates the relationship between the projected area of newly grown need-les and other biometric tree parameters (tree height HTREE, diameter at breast height DBH, projected crown area and crown length) of Norway spruce trees. The total pro-jected area of newly grown needles of seven sampled trees was estimated using a detailed inventory of the number and length of shoots. The relationship between this value and other readily measurable biometric tree characteristics was tested to find the best model for estimating total area of newly grown needles. The model using HTREE*DBH with a coefficient of determination of 0.96 had the best performance. The DBH and HTREE inventory of all trees in the studied plot was used to estimate the total projected area of newly grown needles of the entire forest stand (4506.7 m2 per hec-tare). We also investigated specific leaf area (SLA) of newly grown needles in vertical profile of tree crown. SLA increased constantly from the tree top (28.7 cm2.g2) to the crown base (80.3 cm2.g2). Th e paper presents differences in estimation of biomass of individual aboveground organs (stem, living branches, dead branches, needles and tree crown) and differences in selected dendrometric parameters of sample trees between young spruce stand growing on the site of acid edaphic categories at the study site of Bedřichov (Českomoravská vrchovina Highland, Czech Republic) and young spruce stand growing on the site of edaphic categories fresh at the study site of Rájec, (Drahanská vrchovina Highland, Czech Republic). Although the stands were of the same age, significant differences were observed between the tree components estimated by the allometric equations and also between dendrometric parameters of these stands. Th e allometric equations determined for the stem volume estimation for the stand at the Rájec moderately overestimated (on average 5.3%) really determined values for the stand at the Bedřichov. Th e highest mean relative error of estimation (about 50%) was determined for needle - and living branches biomass. Compared young spruce stands were very different in terms of individual organs of living tree crown biomass. Th is fact was confirmed by comparison of the aggregate "Rájec model" for the living tree crown with the Bedřichov (determined overestimation of values more than 20%). Abstract

In this paper, stand structure of four naturally regenerated stands was analysed to evaluate the potential of silver birch for production of highquality timber. All stands, where birch proportion was more than 90 %, were approximately 15-year-old. Stands were regenerated naturally by succession processes in the region of allochthonous spruce dieback (beech vegetation zone of North-East part of the Czech Republic). In two stands (V-I, V-II) the pre-commercial thinning was done three and four years ago, respectively. Th e total tree densities of these stands were 4200 (V-I) and 3700 (V-II) pcs/ha. Two stands were without human intervention until yet (B-I - 7600 pcs/ha and B-II - 8080 pcs/ha). Th e number of best quality birch trees (A) was 640 and 800 pcs/ha for thinned treatments. Th e densities of A trees in non-thinned stands were 1080 and 1200 pcs/ha. Although average diameter of all birch ranged from 4.7 to 6.7 cm, the averages DBH of A birch trees were 7.4; 8.3; 9.1 and 9.2 cm for stands B-II, B-I, V-I and V-II, respectively. Th e average proportion of live crown of A trees in thinned stands was more than 50%, in case of non-thinned stands it was under 50%. Th e spatial distribution of A trees tends to be regular in the most cases. As convenient silvicultural management repeated treatments with light intensity for the support of A trees in the stand can be recommended. Abstract

Although forests store significant amounts of carbon in tree stems, the extent to which stem growth depends on carbon assimilation and environmental factors is poorly understood. In this study, gross primary productivity (GPP) and net ecosystem productivity (NEP) are compared for the first time at daily resolution with stem carbon allocation (SCA) in a spruce forest. We found substantial differences in the seasonal patterns of all variables as a function of environmental conditions, leading to three important findings. First, carbon uptake was only marginally invested in wood growth during the first half of the growing season. This means that there were other priorities for carbon allocation than stem growth at this time of year. Second, our results show that SRI at the beginning of the stem growth period, which mainly involves cell division and expansion, is a process that requires less carbon than the process of xylem lignification and thickening that follows. And third, NEP was generally less sensitive to drought than SCA. This suggests that the carbon uptake balance is less sensitive to dry periods than growth, particularly because the carbon uptake period is much longer than the growth window. These results may change the way we perceive the effects of climate change on forests, as tree carbon dynamics are primarily explained by the seasonal timing of dry periods rather than the intensity of these events. • Novel daily-resolved stem carbon allocation data of spruce trees. • Carbon uptake and allocation are partially decoupled. • Drought limits stem growth of spruce before carbon uptake is affected. • Timing of extreme events determines the impact on the carbon balance of forests. • Spruce trees increasingly suffer under drought stress. Specifically, the PROFOUND DB provides general site descriptions, soil, climate, CO$_{2}$, nitrogen deposition, tree and forest stand level, and remote sensing data for nine contrasting forest stands distributed across Europe. Moreover, for a subset of five sites, time series of carbon fluxes, atmospheric heat conduction and soil water are also available. The climate and nitrogen deposition data contain several datasets for the historic period and a wide range of future climate change scenarios following the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, RCP8.5). We also provide pre-industrial climate simulations that allow for model runs aimed at disentangling the contribution of climate change to observed forest productivity changes. The PROFOUND DB is available freely as a “SQLite” relational database or “ASCII” flat file version (at https://doi.org/10.5880/PIK.2020.006/; Reyer et al., 2020). The data policies of the individual contributing datasets are provided in the metadata of each data file. The PROFOUND DB can also be accessed via the ProfoundData R package (https://CRAN.R-project.org/package=ProfoundData; Silveyra Gonzalez et al., 2020), which provides basic functions to explore, plot and extract the data for model set-up, calibration and evaluation.

Abstract

Diplomová práce se zabývá kvalifikací postupu svařování hliníkové slitiny EN AW-5083 H111. Tato hliníková slitina byla použita pro výrobu Venturiho trubice. Proto byla vypracována literární rešerše zabývající se vlastnostmi a použitím hliníku a jeho slitin. Další kapitola práce pojednává o svařitelnosti hliníku, hliníkových slitin a o svařitelnosti slitiny EN AW-5083. Část práce je věnována použité metodě TIG a jejím specifikům při svařování hliníkových materiálů. Praktická část diplomové práce se zabývá vlastní kvalifikací svařovacích postupů dle příslušné normy a vyhodnocením podmínek výroby dle výrobkové normy. Poslední kapitola pojednává o celkovém výrobním postupu Venturiho trubice., The diploma thesis deals with the qualification of welding process of aluminum alloy EN AW-5083 H111. This aluminum alloy was used to make a Venturi tube. Therefore, a literature review has been developed dealing with the properties and use of aluminum and its alloys. The next chapter deals with the weldability of aluminum, aluminum alloys and the weldability of EN AW-5083 alloy. Part of the work is devoted to the used TIG method and its specifics when welding aluminum materials. The practical part of the thesis deals with the actual qualification of welding procedures according to the relevant standard and evaluation of production conditions according to the product standard. The last chapter deals with the overall manufacturing process of the Venturi tube.
