Abstract

Hunting and consuming wild mushrooms is an increasingly popular avocation, as well as a means of subsistence for certain groups in the United States. Consuming wild mushrooms is relatively safe for persons with the necessary expert knowledge. Each year, however, tragic deaths or illnesses occur when unsuspecting persons ingest toxic mushrooms. We conjectured that there may be vulnerable subgroups that should be targeted for public service announcements and education about mushrooms. Therefore, we reviewed California's hospital discharge database from 1990 through 1994 to ascertain demographic characteristics and outcomes of 'serious' mushroom exposures requiring a hospital admission. Children younger than 5 years have a higher rate of hospital admission for 'serious' poisonings. Therefore, parents should be reminded of the need for supervising children in areas with wild mushrooms. We did not find evidence that poisoning rates differed significantly between ethnic or racial groups, but this finding may be limited by a failure of these groups to seek care after becoming ill. 20. Acute poisoning from gamma-hydroxybutyrate in California

Abstract

We report a series of 5 representative patients in California who experienced adverse reactions from the illicitly marketed substance [Gamma]-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). The drug is a putative neurotransmitter marketed as a growth hormone releaser for bodybuilders. The most commonly reported symptoms included abrupt drowsiness, dizziness, and a 'high' Other effects were headache, nausea, vomiting, myoclonic jerking, and short-term coma. There have been no reported deaths. If product use is discontinued, full recovery with no long-term side effects is universal. No clear dose-response effect was observed; this may be attributable to differences in susceptibility, wide variations in doses taken by the same person, or the coingestion of other substances. Case interviews confirm that, despite being banned by the US Food and Drug Administration, GHB is still widely available in the underground drug market. Athletes and bodybuilders may take drugs for which there are claims of improved performance or body image. This thesis examines U.S.-Canadian border threats and defenses and compares the U.S.-Canadian situation with the European Schengen Convention (SC). The Department of Homeland Security coordinates U.S. security with representatives from law enforcement, military and civilian entities. Public Safety Canada coordinates defense in Canada. Prior to the 9/11 attack, the U.S.-Canadian relationship was similar to the SC, focusing on securing external borders while opening shared borders. Some experts, especially in the U.S., argue that border security needs to be tightened further while others contend increased U.S.-Canadian border security is unnecessary and harms commerce. In 2011, Denmark decided to increase internal border security, rejecting the SC tenets requiring common security of external border of the larger Schengen area and open internal zones. The increase represented a case study of unilateral border relations. Although never completed, the lessons of this brief experiment in increased border security are that homeland security decisions are based more on arguments of sovereignty and politics, rather than on objective determinations of threats and security. 28. Asthma prevalence in Hispanic and Asian American ethnic subgroups: results from the California Healthy Kids Survey

Abstract

OBJECTIVES. Asthma prevalence for different ethnic groups in the United States, beyond white, black and Hispanic, is seldom reported. We compared the prevalence of asthma diagnosis among various Hispanic and Asian American ethnic subgroups using data collected from the school-based California Healthy Kids Survey. METHODS. The California Healthy Kids Survey was administered to 462 147 public school students in the seventh, ninth, and 11th grades throughout California during the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 school years. Prevalence of lifetime asthma diagnosis was calculated for 11 Asian American Pacific Islander subgroups and 8 Hispanic subgroups. RESULTS. Asthma prevalence among Hispanic subgroups ranged from 13.2% for Mexican American students to 22.8% for Puerto Rican students and 23.0% among Cuban American students. Lifetime asthma diagnosis among the 11 Asian American Pacific Islander subgroups ranged from 10.9% among Korean American students to 23.8% among Filipino American students. CONCLUSIONS. The survey revealed substantial variation in asthma prevalence between the different Hispanic and Asian American Pacific Islander subgroups and that Pacific Islanders, Filipinos, Cubans, and Puerto Ricans are at elevated risk for asthma. Differences in the distributions of characteristics related to country of birth, residential history, generational status, and/or degree of acculturation might account for much of the observed differences in asthma prevalence between ethnic subgroups. Previous asthma prevalence estimates for Asians or Hispanics are in part a function of the particular ethnic composition of the population under investigation. We suggest that asthma studies that include a substantial number of Asian Pacific Islander and Hispanic persons use a more detailed categorization of race/ethnicity. Abstract

At Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church, there was no intentional ministry directed at developing men's fellowship and encouraging their spiritual growth. Men were present and active in the life ofthe church, but aside from participation in a Sunday School class, Bible Study, or the Emmaus Walk there were limited options for growth in faith or support. In addition, many men tend to be active and adventurous. Many of the existing church programs are not oriented to attracting the men who get excited about a activity and an adventure in faith. This project developed a model for men's spiritual growth by telling and reflecting on their stories of faith and participating in communal adventures. Its goal was to see ifmen who participated would be enthusiastic about their spiritual growth and more courageous in sharing their faith stories. The primary method used was a narrative approach invited asked each participant to share several personal faith stories with a group ofmen and then spend some time in discussing it with them. Scheduling of activities and events was kept open and flexible, in effect creating spaces for the Holy Spirit to guide us. In addition, the project included a 24-hour opening retreat in the Texas hill country and a 4-day closing adventure to Big Bend, where men could share time, food, stories, and experiences. Expectations for the model were exceeded. Everyone ofthe participants reported growth in faith, in one form or another, and they reported that the time spent was a meaningful for them personally. The participants also volunteered to lead worship on Men's Leadership Sunday, shortly after the project's final retreat, and shared many of their experiences with the whole congregation. At the end of ten weeks when the project was complete no one wanted the group to end. Fellowship between these men had become so deeply personal that they all decided to continue meeting together, at least once each month. They also began to examine ways they could share this experience with other men in the church. In conclusion, this project was a huge success. Each of the men found this to be a valuable and growth producing experience. And as a result, Holy Trinity now has a continuing fellowship of men who gather for discussion, prayer, and faith sharing. 50. Prevalence of People Reporting Sensitivities to Chemicals in a Population based Survey.

Abstract

To describe the prevalence and correlates of reports about sensitivities to chemicals, questions about chemical sensitivities were added to the 1995 California Behavior Risk Factor Survey (BRFS). The survey was administered by telephone to 4,046 subjects. Of all respondents, 253 (6.3%) reported doctor-diagnosed “environmental illness” or “multiple chemical sensitivity” (MCS) and 643 (15.9%) reported being “allergic or unusually sensitive to everyday chemicals.” Sensitivity to more than one type of chemical was described by 11.9% of the total sample population. Logistic regression models were constructed. Hispanic ethnicity was associated with physician-diagnosed MCS (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.82, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.21–2.73). Female gender was associated with individual self-reports of sensitivity (adjusted OR = 1.63, 95% CI 1.23–2.17). Marital status, employment, education, geographic location, and income were not predictive of reported chemical sensitivities or reported doctor diagnosis. Surprising numbers of people believed they were sensitive to chemicals and made sick by common chemical exposures. The homogeneity of responses across race-ethnicity, geography, education, and marital status is compatible with a physiologic response or with widespread societal apprehensions in regard to chemical exposure.
