The center of the Milky Way contains stellar populations spanning a range in age and metallicity, with a recent star formation burst producing young and massive stars. Chemical abundances in the most luminous stellar member of the Nuclear Star Cluster (NSC), IRS 7, are presented for $^{19}$F, $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C, $^{14}$N, $^{16}$O, $^{17}$O, and Fe from an LTE analysis based on spherical modeling and radiative transfer with a 25M$_{\odot}$ model atmosphere, whose chemistry was tailored to the derived photospheric abundances. We find IRS 7 to be depleted heavily in both $^{12}$C (~-0.8 dex) and $^{16}$O (~-0.4 dex), while exhibiting an extremely enhanced $^{14}$N abundance (~+1.1 dex), which are isotopic signatures of the deep mixing of CNO-cycled material to the stellar surface. The $^{19}$F abundance is also heavily depleted by ~1 dex relative to the baseline fluorine of the Nuclear Star Cluster, providing evidence that fluorine along with carbon constrain the nature of the deep mixing in this very luminous supergiant. The abundances of the minor isotopes $^{13}$C and $^{17}$O are also derived, with ratios of $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C~5.3 and $^{16}$O/$^{17}$O~525. The derived abundances for IRS 7, in conjunction with previous abundance results for massive stars in the NSC, are compared with rotating and non-rotating models of massive stars and it is found that the IRS 7 abundances overall follow the behavior predicted by stellar models. 22 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter-and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks, and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template data sets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. To study the demographics of interstellar ices in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way, we obtain near-infrared spectra of $109$ red point sources using NASA IRTF/SpeX at Maunakea. We select the sample from near- and mid-infrared photometry, including $12$ objects in the previous paper of this series, to ensure that these sources trace a large amount of absorption through clouds in each line of sight. We find that most of the sample ($100$ objects) show CO band-head absorption at $2.3\ μ$m, tagging them as red (super-) giants. Despite the photospheric signature, however, a fraction of the sample with $L$-band spectra ($9/82=0.11$) exhibit large H$_2$O ice column densities ($N > 2\times10^{18}\ {\rm cm}^{-2}$), and six of them also reveal CH$_3$OH ice absorption. As one of such objects is identified as a young stellar object (YSO) in our previous work, these ice-rich sight lines are likely associated with background stars in projection to an extended envelope of a YSO or a dense cloud core. The low frequency of such objects in the early stage of stellar evolution implies a low star-formation rate ($, 28 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Abundances of fluorine ($^{19}$F), as well as isotopic ratios of $^{16}$O/$^{17}$O, are derived in a sample of luminous young ($\sim$10$^{7}$--10$^{8}$ yrs) red giants in the Galactic center (with galactocentric distances ranging from 0.6--30 pc), using high-resolution infrared spectra and vibration-rotation lines of H$^{19}$F near $\lambda$2.3$\mu$m. Five of the six red giants are members of the Nuclear star cluster that orbits the central supermassive black hole. Previous investigations of the chemical evolution of $^{19}$F in Galactic thin and thick disk stars have revealed that the nucleosynthetic origins of $^{19}$F may be rather complex, resulting from two, or more, astrophysical sites; fluorine abundances behave as a primary element with respect to Fe abundances for thick disk stars and as a secondary element in thin disk stars. The Galactic center red giants analyzed fall within the thin disk relation of F with Fe, having near-solar, to slightly larger, abundances of Fe ($$=+0.08$\pm$0.04), with a slight enhancement of the F/Fe abundance ratio ($$=+0.28$\pm$0.17). In terms of their F and Fe abundances, the Galactic center stars follow the thin disk population, which requires an efficient source of $^{19}$F that could be the winds from core-He burning Wolf Rayet stars, or thermally-pulsing AGB stars, or a combination of both. The observed increase of [F/Fe] with increasing [Fe/H] found in thin disk and Galactic center stars is not predicted by any published chemical evolution models that are discussed, thus a quantitative understanding of yields from the various possible sources of $^{19}$F remains unknown., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

The fullerene C 60 has four infrared active vibrational transitions at 7.0, 8.5, 17.5 and 18.9 μ m. We have previously observed emission features at 17.4 and 18.9 μ m in the reflection nebula NGC 7023 and demonstrated spatial correlations suggestive of a common origin. We now confirm the identification of these features with C 60 by detecting a third emission feature at 7.04 ± 0.05 μ m at a position of strong 18.9 μ m emission in NGC 7023. We also report the detection of these three features in the reflection nebula NGC 2023. We show with spectroscopic mapping of NGC 7023 that the 18.9 μ m feature peaks on the central star, that the 16.4 μ m emission feature due to PAHs peaks between the star and a nearby photodissociation front, and that the 17.4 μ m feature is a blend of a PAH feature and C 60 . The derived C 60 abundance is consistent with that from previous upper limits and possible fullerene detections in the interstellar medium.

The inner Galactic Bulge has, until recently, been avoided in chemical evolution studies due to extreme extinction and stellar crowding. Large, near-IR spectroscopic surveys, such as APOGEE, allow for the first time the measurement of metallicities in the inner region of our Galaxy. We study metallicities of 33 K/M giants situated in the Galactic Center region from observations obtained with the APOGEE survey. We selected K/M giants with reliable stellar parameters from the APOGEE/ASPCAP pipeline. Distances, interstellar extinction values, and radial velocities were checked to confirm that these stars are indeed situated in the inner Galactic Bulge. We find a metal-rich population centered at [M/H] = +0.4 dex, in agreement with earlier studies of other bulge regions, but also a peak at low metallicity around $\rm [M/H] = -1.0\,dex$, suggesting the presence of a metal-poor population which has not previously been detected in the central region. Our results indicate a dominant metal-rich population with a metal-poor component that is enhanced in the $\alpha$-elements. The third generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) took data from 2008 to 2014 using the original SDSS wide-field imager, the original and an upgraded multi-object fiber-fed optical spectrograph, a new near-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, and a novel optical interferometer. All the data from SDSS-III are now made public. In particular, this paper describes Data Release 11 (DR11) including all data acquired through 2013 July, and Data Release 12 (DR12) adding data acquired through 2014 July (including all data included in previous data releases), marking the end of SDSS-III observing. Relative to our previous public release (DR10), DR12 adds one million new spectra of galaxies and quasars from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) over an additional 3000 sq. deg of sky, more than triples the number of H-band spectra of stars as part of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), and includes repeated accurate radial velocity measurements of 5500 stars from the Multi-Object APO Radial Velocity Exoplanet Large-area Survey (MARVELS). The APOGEE outputs now include measured abundances of 15 different elements for each star. In total, SDSS-III added 2350 sq. deg of ugriz imaging; 155,520 spectra of 138,099 stars as part of the Sloan Exploration of Galactic Understanding and Evolution 2 (SEGUE-2) survey; 2,497,484 BOSS spectra of 1,372,737 galaxies, 294,512 quasars, and 247,216 stars over 9376 sq. deg; 618,080 APOGEE spectra of 156,593 stars; and 197,040 MARVELS spectra of 5,513 stars. We present R=550 to 1200 near infrared H and K spectra for a magnitude limited sample of 79 asymptotic giant branch and cool supergiant stars in the central ~ 5 pc (diameter) of the Galaxy. We use a set of similar spectra obtained for solar neighborhood stars with known Teff and Mbol that is in the same range as the Galactic center (GC) sample to derive Teff and Mbol for the GC sample. We then construct the Hertzsprung--Russell (HRD) diagram for the GC sample. Using an automated maximum likelihood routine, we derive a coarse star formation history of the GC. We find (1) roughly 75% of the stars formed in the central few pc are older than 5 Gyr; (2) the star formation rate (SFR) is variable over time, with a roughly 4 times higher star formation rate in the last 100 Myr compared to the average SFR; (3) our model can only match dynamical limits on the total mass of stars formed by limiting the IMF to masses above 0.7 M$_\odot$. This could be a signature of mass segregation or of the bias toward massive star formation from the unique star formation conditions in the GC; (4) blue supergiants account for 12 % of the total sample observed, and the ratio of red to blue supergiants is roughly 1.5; (5) models with isochrones with [Fe/H] = 0.0 over all ages fit the stars in our HRD better than models with lower [Fe/H] in the oldest age bins, consistent with the finding of Ramirez et al. Previous radio observations revealed widespread gas-phase methanol (CH$_3$OH) in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) at the Galactic center (GC), but its origin remains unclear. Here, we report the discovery of CH$_3$OH ice toward a star in the CMZ, based on a Subaru $3.4$-$4.0\ \mu$m spectrum, aided by NASA/IRTF $L'$ imaging and $2$-$4\ \mu$m spectra. The star lies $\sim8000$ au away in projection from a massive young stellar object (MYSO). Its observed high CH$_3$OH ice abundance ($17\%\pm3\%$ relative to H$_2$O ice) suggests that the $3.535\ \mu$m CH$_3$OH ice absorption likely arises in the MYSO's extended envelope. However, it is also possible that CH$_3$OH ice forms with a higher abundance in dense clouds within the CMZ, compared to within the disk. Either way, our result implies that gas-phase CH$_3$OH in the CMZ can be largely produced by desorption from icy grains. The high solid CH$_3$OH abundance confirms the prominent $15.4\ \mu$m shoulder absorption observed toward GC MYSOs arises from CO$_2$ ice mixed with CH$_3$OH., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We have determined the fraction of barred galaxies in the H-band for a statistically well-defined sample of 186 spirals drawn from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy survey. We find 56% of our sample to be strongly barred at H, while another 16% is weakly barred. Only 27% of our sample is unbarred in the near-infrared. The RC3 and the Carnegie Atlas of Galaxies both classify only about 30% of our sample as strongly barred. Thus strong bars are nearly twice as prevalent in the near-infrared as in the optical. The frequency of genuine optically hidden bars is significant, but lower than many claims in the literature: 40% of the galaxies in our sample that are classified as unbarred in the RC3 show evidence for a bar in the H-band, while for the Carnegie Atlas this fraction is 66%. Our data reveal no significant trend in bar fraction as a function of morphology in either the optical or H-band. Optical surveys of high redshift galaxies may be strongly biased against finding bars, as bars are increasingly difficult to detect at bluer rest wavelengths., LaTeX with AASTeX style file, 23 pages with 6 figures. We present the results of imaging spectroscopy of the reflection nebula vdB 133, obtained with the infrared camera and circular variable filter wheel on the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Our observations reveal the infrared emission features (IEFs), at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3, and 12.7 micron, and associated 5 -- 15 micron continuum emission. The stellar system illuminating vdB 133 has the lowest ratio of ultraviolet (shortward of 0.4 micron) to total flux of any stars demonstrated to date to excite the IEFs and associated continuum emission from adjacent interstellar dust, as opposed to circumstellar dust. The low fraction of UV flux from this system poses a problem for existing models for the emission mechanism and emitting material, which all require substantial UV radiation for the excitation of the IEFs and associated continuum., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJL

We have conducted a near-infrared spectroscopic survey of 47 candidate counterparts to X-ray sources discovered by the Chandra X-ray Observatory near the Galactic Center (GC). Though a significant number of these astrometric matches are likely to be spurious, we sought out spectral characteristics of active stars and interacting binaries, such as hot, massive spectral types or emission lines in order to corroborate the X-ray activity and certify the authenticity of the match. We present three new spectroscopic identifications, including a Be high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) or a gamma Cassiopeiae (Cas) system, a symbiotic X-ray binary and an O-type star of unknown luminosity class. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) is a high-resolution infrared spectroscopic survey spanning all Galactic environments (i.e., bulge, disk, and halo), with the principal goal of constraining dynamical and chemical evolution models of the Milky Way. APOGEE takes advantage of the reduced effects of extinction at infrared wavelengths to observe the inner Galaxy and bulge at an unprecedented level of detail. The survey's broad spatial and wavelength coverage enables users of APOGEE data to address numerous Galactic structure and stellar populations issues. In this paper we describe the APOGEE targeting scheme and document its various target classes to provide the necessary background and reference information to analyze samples of APOGEE data with awareness of the imposed selection criteria and resulting sample properties. APOGEE's primary sample consists of ~100,000 red giant stars, selected to minimize observational biases in age and metallicity. We present the methodology and considerations that drive the selection of this sample and evaluate the accuracy, efficiency, and caveats of the selection and sampling algorithms. We also describe additional target classes that contribute to the APOGEE sample, including numerous ancillary science programs, and we outline the targeting data that will be included in the public data releases., Accepted to AJ. 31 pages, 11 figures

We present 10um-35um Spitzer spectra of the interstellar medium in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), the central 210 pc x 60 pc of the Galactic center (GC). We present maps of the CMZ in ionic and H2 emission, covering a more extensive area than earlier spectroscopic surveys in this region. The radial velocities and intensities of ionic lines and H2 suggest that most of the H2 0-0 S(0) emission comes from gas along the line-of-sight, as found by previous work. We compare diagnostic line ratios measured in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) to our data. Previous work shows that forbidden line ratios can distinguish star-forming galaxies from LINERs and AGNs. Commissioning observations with the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III, have produced radial velocities (RVs) for ~4700 K/M-giant stars in the Milky Way bulge. These high-resolution (R \sim 22,500), high-S/N (>100 per resolution element), near-infrared (1.51-1.70 um; NIR) spectra provide accurate RVs (epsilon_v~0.2 km/s) for the sample of stars in 18 Galactic bulge fields spanning -1-32 deg. This represents the largest NIR high-resolution spectroscopic sample of giant stars ever assembled in this region of the Galaxy. A cold (sigma_v~30 km/s), high-velocity peak (V_GSR \sim +200 km/s) is found to comprise a significant fraction (~10%) of stars in many of these fields. These high RVs have not been detected in previous MW surveys and are not expected for a simple, circularly rotating disk. Preliminary distance estimates rule out an origin from the background Sagittarius tidal stream or a new stream in the MW disk. Comparison to various Galactic models suggests that these high RVs are best explained by stars in orbits of the Galactic bar potential, although some observational features remain unexplained., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The Chandra X-ray Observatory has now discovered nearly 10,000 X-ray point sources in the 2 x 0.8 degree region around the Galactic Center (Muno 2009). The sources are likely to be a population of accreting binaries in the Galactic Center, but little else is known of their nature. We obtained JHKs imaging of the 17'x 17' region around Sgr A*, an area containing 4339 of these X-ray sources, with the ISPI camera on the CTIO 4-m telescope. We cross-correlate the Chandra and ISPI catalogs to find potential IR counterparts to the X-ray sources. The extreme IR source crowding in the field means that it is not possible to establish the authenticity of the matches with astrometry and photometry alone. We find 2137 IR/X-ray astrometrically matched sources: statistically we estimate that our catalog contains 289 +/- 13 true matches to soft X-ray sources and 154 +/- 39 matches to hard X-ray sources. However, the fraction of true counterparts to candidate counterparts for hard sources is just 11 %, compared to 60 % for soft sources, making hard source NIR matches particularly challenging for spectroscopic follow-up. We calculate a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for the matches to hard X-ray sources, and find regions where significant numbers of the IR matches are real. We use their CMD positions to place limits on the absolute Ks band magnitudes of the potential NIR counterparts to hard X-ray sources. We find regions of the counterpart CMD with 9 +/- 3 likely Wolf-Rayet/supergiant binaries (with 4 spectroscopically confirmed in the literature) as well as 44 +/- 13 candidates that could consist of either main sequence high mass X-ray binaries or red giants with an accreting compact companion. We report the detection of several molecular gas-phase and ice absorption features in three photometrically-selected young stellar object (YSO) candidates in the central 280 pc of the Milky Way. Our spectra, obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, reveal gas-phase absorption from CO2 (15.0um), C2H2 (13.7um) and HCN (14.0um). We attribute this absorption to warm, dense gas in massive YSOs. We also detect strong and broad 15um CO2 ice absorption features, with a remarkable double-peaked structure. The prominent long-wavelength peak is due to CH3OH-rich ice grains, and is similar to those found in other known massive YSOs. Our IRS observations demonstrate the youth of these objects, and provide the first spectroscopic identification of massive YSOs in the Galactic Center., Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present a Spitzer/IRS low-resolution mid-infrared spectrum (5-14 micron) of the luminous transient discovered in the nearby galaxy NGC 300 in May 2008. The spectrum, obtained three months after discovery, shows that the transient is very luminous in the mid-IR. Furthermore, the spectrum shows strong, broad emission features at 8 and 12 micron that are observed in Galactic carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae. Combining these data with published optical and near-IR photometry obtained at the same epoch, we find that the mid-IR excess traced by the Spitzer spectrum accounts for ~20% of the total energy output. This component can be well explained by emission from ~3x10^-4 Msun of pre-existing progenitor dust at temperature ~400 K. The spectral energy distribution of the transient also shows a near-IR excess that can be explained by emission from newly-formed dust in the ejecta. Alternatively, both the near-IR and mid-IR excesses can together be explained by a single pre-existing geometrically thick dust shell. In light of the new observations obtained with Spitzer, we revisit the analysis of the optical spectra and kinematics, which were compared to the massive yellow-hypergiant IRC+10420 in previous studies. We show that proto-planetary nebulae share many properties with the NGC 300 transient and SN 2008S. We conclude that even though the explosion of a massive star (> 10 Msun) cannot be ruled out, an explosive event on a massive (6-10 Msun) carbon-rich AGB/super-AGB or post-AGB star is consistent with all observations of the transients and their progenitors presented thus far., 9 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables; references updated

We present a JHK_s catalog of a 20'×20' region around the Galactic Center observed with the ISPI camera on the 4 m CTIO telescope. The data is being used to select targets for the FLAMINGOS-2 Galactic Center Survey, which will take near-infrared spectra of thousands of GC sources in an effort to identify and characterize the unique X-ray binary source population in this region.

We have obtained Spitzer/IRAC observations of the central 2.0 x 1.4 degrees (~280 x 200 pc) of the Galaxy at 3.6-8.0 microns. A point source catalog of 1,065,565 objects is presented. The catalog includes magnitudes for the point sources at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 microns, as well as JHK photometry from 2MASS. The point source catalog is confusion limited with average limits of 12.4, 12.1, 11.7, and 11.2 magnitudes for [3.6], [4.5], [5.8], and [8.0], respectively. We find that the confusion limits are spatially variable because of stellar surface density, background surface brightness level, and extinction variations across the survey region. The overall distribution of point source density with Galactic latitude and longitude is essentially constant, but structure does appear when sources of different magnitude ranges are selected. Bright stars show a steep decreasing gradient with Galactic latitude, and a slow decreasing gradient with Galactic longitude, with a peak at the position of the Galactic center. We discuss oxygen and iron abundance patterns in K and M red-giant members of the Galactic bulge and in the young and massive M-type stars inhabiting the very center of the Milky Way. The abundance results from the different bulge studies in the literature, both in the optical and the infrared, indicate that the [O/Fe]-[Fe/H] relation in the bulge does not follow the disk relation, with [O/Fe] values falling above those of the disk. Based on these elevated values of [O/Fe] extending to large Fe abundances, it is suggested that the bulge underwent a rapid chemical enrichment with perhaps a top-heavy initial mass function. The Galactic Center stars reveal a nearly uniform and slightly elevated (relative to solar) iron abundance for a studied sample which is composed of 10 red giants and supergiants. We present chemical abundances in a sample of luminous cool stars located within 30 pc of the Galactic Center. Abundances of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, calcium, and iron were derived from high-resolution infrared spectra in the H- and K-bands. The abundance results indicate that both [O/Fe] and [Ca/Fe] are enhanced respectively by averages of +0.2 and +0.3 dex, relative to either the Sun or the Milky Way disk at near solar Fe abundances. The Galactic Center stars show a nearly uniform and nearly solar iron abundance. The mean value of A(Fe) = 7.59 +- 0.06 agrees well with previous work. The total range in Fe abundance among Galactic Center stars, 0.16 dex, is significantly narrower than the iron abundance distributions found in the literature for the older bulge population. We present 15 - 20 micron long-slit spectra, from the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on Spitzer, of NGC 7023. We observe recently-discovered interstellar emission features, at 15.9, 16.4, 17.0, 17.4, 17.8, and 18.9 microns, throughout the reflection nebula. The 16.4 micron emission feature peaks near the photodissociation front northwest of the star, as do the aromatic emission features (AEFs) at 3.3, 6.2 and 11.3 microns. The 16.4 micron emission feature is thus likely related to the AEFs and radiates by non-equilibrium emission. The new 18.9 micron emission feature, by contrast, decreases monotonically with stellar distance. We consider candidate species for the 18.9 micron feature, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, fullerenes, and diamonds. We report measurements of the light curve of the variable Galactic Center source IRS16SW. The light curve is not consistent with an eclipsing binary or any other obvious variable star. We have observed the reflection nebula NGC 7023, with the Short-High module and long-slit Short-Low and Long-Low modules of the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We also present Infrared Array Camera and Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer images of NGC 7023 at 3.6, 4.5, 8.0, and 24 microns. We observe the aromatic emission features (AEFs) at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3, and 12.7 microns, plus a wealth of weaker features. We find new unidentified interstellar emission features at 6.7, 10.1, 15.8, 17.4, and 19.0 microns. Possible identifications include aromatic hydrocarbons or nanoparticles of unknown mineralogy. We announce the initial release of data from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey, a BVRJHK imaging survey of a well-defined sample of 205 bright, nearby spiral galaxies. We present H-band morphological classification on the Hubble sequence for the OSU Survey sample. We compare the H-band classification to B-band classification from our own images and from standard galaxy catalogs. Our B-band classifications match well with those of the standard catalogs. On average, galaxies with optical classifications from Sa through Scd appear about one T-type earlier in the H-band than in the B-band, but with large scatter. This result does not support recent claims made in the literature that the optical and near-IR morphologies of spiral galaxies are uncorrelated. We present detailed descriptions of the H-band morphologies of our entire sample, as well as B- and H-band images for a set of 17 galaxies chosen as type examples, and BRH color-composite images of six galaxies chosen to demonstrate the range in morphological variation as a function of wavelength. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has been in operation since 2000 April. This paper presents the tenth public data release (DR10) from its current incarnation, SDSS-III. This data release includes the first spectroscopic data from the Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), along with spectroscopic data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) taken through 2012 July. The APOGEE instrument is a near-infrared R~22,500 300-fiber spectrograph covering 1.514--1.696 microns. The APOGEE survey is studying the chemical abundances and radial velocities of roughly 100,000 red giant star candidates in the bulge, bar, disk, and halo of the Milky Way. DR10 includes 178,397 spectra of 57,454 stars, each typically observed three or more times, from APOGEE. Derived quantities from these spectra (radial velocities, effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities) are also included.DR10 also roughly doubles the number of BOSS spectra over those included in the ninth data release. DR10 includes a total of 1,507,954 BOSS spectra, comprising 927,844 galaxy spectra; 182,009 quasar spectra; and 159,327 stellar spectra, selected over 6373.2 square degrees., 15 figures; 1 table. We present measurements of [Fe/H] for six M supergiant stars and three giant stars within 0.5 pc of the Galactic Center (GC) and one M supergiant star within 30 pc of the GC. The results are based on high-resolution (lambda / Delta lambda =40,000) K-band spectra, taken with CSHELL at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility.We determine the iron abundance by detailed abundance analysis,performed with the spectral synthesis program MOOG.The mean [Fe/H] of the GC stars is determined to be near solar,[Fe/H] = +0.12 $\pm$ 0.22. Our analysis is a differential analysis, as we have observed and applied the same analysis technique to eleven cool, luminous stars in the solar neighborhood with similar temperatures and luminosities as the GC stars. The mean [Fe/H] of the solar neighborhood comparison stars, [Fe/H] = +0.03 $\pm$ 0.16, is similar to that of the GC stars. The width of the GC [Fe/H] distribution is found to be narrower than the width of the [Fe/H] distribution of Baade's Window in the bulge but consistent with the width of the [Fe/H] distribution of giant and supergiant stars in the solar neighborhood., 41 pages, 9 figures, ApJ, in press

J, H, K, and L photometry for the stars in the central 2' (5 pc) of the Galaxy are presented. Using the observed J-H, H-K, and K-L colors and assumed intrinsic colors, we determine the interstellar extinction at 2.2 mic (A_K) for approximately 1100 individual stars. The mean A_K (= 3.3 mag) is similar to previous results, but we find that the reddening is highly variable and some stars are likely to be seen through A_K > 6 mag. The de-reddened K-band luminosity function points to a significantly brighter component to the stellar population (> 1.5 mag at K) than found in the stellar population in Baade's window, confirming previous work done at lower spatial resolution. The observed flux of all Galactic center stars with estimated Ko (de-reddened magnitude) = 7.0 mag is approx 25 % of the total in the 2' X 2' field. Our observations confirm the recent finding that several bright M stars in the Galactic center are variable. We present radial velocities for approximately 40 stars in each of three optically obscured, off-axis, fields toward the Galactic bulge. Combined with the data presented by Blum et al. (1994), we now have mean radial velocities and radial velocity dispersions in four fields towards the Galactic bulge. These four fields lie nearly along an axis whose position angle from the major axis of the Galaxy is 55\deg. The observed kinematics generally match both Kent's (1992) axisymmetric and Zhao's (1994) barred dynamical model predictions, but are marginally better described by the latter. The velocity dispersion in our innermost field is high, 153 $\pm$ 17 \kms. Our data, combined with that from previous studies at larger radii, suggest that the stellar velocity dispersion is flat or still rising at projected radius R \aple 150 pc., Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures, uuencoded postscript. International audience; We present results from our spectroscopic study, using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, designed to identify massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Galactic center (GC). Our sample of 107 YSO candidates was selected based on Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) colors from the high spatial resolution, high sensitivity Spitzer/IRAC images in the Central Molecular Zone, which spans the central ∼300 pc region of the Milky Way. We obtained IRS spectra over 5–35 μm using both high- and low-resolution IRS modules. We spectroscopically identify massive YSOs by the presence of a 15.4 μm shoulder on the absorption profile of 15 μm CO2 ice, suggestive of CO2 ice mixed with CH3OH ice on grains. This 15.4 μm shoulder is clearly observed in 16 sources and possibly observed in an additional 19 sources. We show that nine massive YSOs also reveal molecular gas-phase absorption from CO2, C2H2, and/or HCN, which traces warm and dense gas in YSOs. Our results provide the first spectroscopic census of the massive YSO population in the GC. We fit YSO models to the observed spectral energy distributions and find YSO masses of 8–23 M☉, which generally agree with the masses derived from observed radio continuum emission. We find that about 50% of photometrically identified YSOs are confirmed with our spectroscopic study. This implies a preliminary star formation rate of ∼0.07 M☉ yr−1 at the GC.

New and existing K-band spectra for 19 Galactic center late-type stars have been analyzed along with representative spectra of disk and bulge M giants and supergiants. Absorption strengths for strong atomic and molecular features have been measured. The Galactic center stars generally exhibit stronger absorption features centered near Na I (2.206 mic) and Ca I (2.264 mic) than representative disk M stars at the same CO absorption strength. Based on the absolute K-band magnitudes and CO and H2O absorption strengths for the Galactic center stars and known M supergiants and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, we conclude that only IRS 7 must be a supergiant. Two other bright stars in our Galactic center sample are likely supergiants as well. The remaining bright, cool stars in the Galactic center that we have observed are most consistent with being intermediate mass/age AGB stars. We identify four of the Galactic center stars as long period variables based on their K-band spectral properties and associated photometric variability. The idea of non-equilibrium thermal emission from very small particles, whether grains or molecules, has a growing interest for infrared astronomers as more and more examples of its potential applicability are found in the IRAS data set and other observations. This paper will review the observational development of these ideas, as well as discuss recent observations and suggest possible future directions for theory and observations of this phenomenon.

Observations of the profile of the 2.3‐μm CO 2–0 bandhead in the Galactic Center are discussed. These large‐beam (20‘ or 1 pc) observations provide information on the integrated stellar velocity and velocity dispersion in the inner 10 pc of the Galaxy. There is evidence that the velocity dispersion dominates the rotational velocity at all positions within 5 pc of the Galactic Center, particularly in the inner regions. We also note a significant difference between the stellar velocities we measure and the gas velocities measured in previous studies.

We have obtained high‐resolution 2‐μm spectra of six late‐type stars within 2 pc of the Galactic Center. We have derived spectral types, reddenings, and radial velocities for these stars. We find the supergiant density in the Galactic Center is lower than in previous determinations. No correspondence is found between stellar velocities and Ne II velocities observed along the same line of sight. No systematic rotation or ordered motion is seen in the stellar velocity distribution. The mass distribution derived from the stellar velocities is compared to those derived from gas velocities and from the 2‐μm light.
