Search

One of the most successful paradigms of many-body physics is the concept of quasiparticles: excitations in strongly interacting matter behaving like weakly interacting particles in free space. Quasiparticles in metals are very robust objects. Yet, when a system's ground state undergoes a qualitative change at a quantum critical point (QCP), the quasiparticles may disintegrate and give way to an exotic quantum-fluid state of matter. The nature of this breakdown is intensely debated, because the emergent quantum fluid dominates the material properties up to high temperature and might even be related to the occurence of superconductivity in some compounds. Here we trace the dynamics of heavy-fermion quasiparticles in CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_{x}$ and monitor their evolution towards the QCP in time-resolved experiments, supported by many-body calculations. A terahertz pulse disrupts the many-body heavy-fermion state. Under emission of a delayed, phase-coherent terahertz reflex the heavy-fermion state recovers, with a coherence time 100 times longer than typically associated with correlated metals. The quasiparticle weight collapses towards the QCP, yet its formation temperature remains constant -- phenomena believed to be mutually exclusive. We have studied how the magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient EuO sputtered thin films vary as a function of thickness. The magnetic moment, measured by polarized neutron reflectometry, and the Curie temperature are found to decrease with reducing thickness. Our results indicate that the reduced number of nearest neighbors, band bending and the partial depopulation of the electronic states that carry the spins associated with the 4f orbitals of Eu are all contributing factors in the surface-induced change of the magnetic properties of EuO$_{1-x}$., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We develop an analytical theory for diffusive random lasers by coupling the transport theory of the disordered medium to the semiclassical laser rate equations, accounting for (coherent) stimulated and (incoherent) spontaneous emission. From the causality of wave propagation in an amplifying, diffusive medium we derive a novel length scale which we identify with the average mode radius of the lasing quasi-modes. We show further that loss at the surface of the laser-active medium is crucial in order to stabilize a stationary lasing state. The solution of the transport theory of random lasers for a layer geometry with appropriate surface boundary conditions yields the spatial profile of the light intensity and of the population inversion. The dependence of the intensity correlation length on the pump rate is in qualitative agreement with experimental and numerical findings.

We propose a new criterion for distinguishing the Hertz-Millis (HM) and the local quantum critical (LQC) mechanism in heavy fermion systems with a magnetic quantum phase transition (QPT). The criterion is based on our finding that the spin screening of Kondo ions can be completely suppressed by the RKKY coupling to the surrounding magnetic ions even without magnetic ordering and that, consequently, the signature of this suppression can be observed in spectroscopic measurements above the magnetic ordering temperature. We apply the criterion to high-resolution photoemission (UPS) measurements on CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_{x}$ and conclude that the QPT in this system is dominated by the LQC scenario., Comment: Inveted paper, International Conference on Magnetism, ICM 2009, Karlsruhe. We consider the spatial spin correlations around a partially screened spin-1 magnetic moment in a metal exhibiting the underscreened Kondo effect. We find that the underscreening of the impurity spin results in spatial spin correlations that are more pronounced as compared to the fully screened Kondo effect; their power-law decay is weaker because of characteristic logarithmic corrections at large distances. The spin correlator also changes sign as a function of distance to the impurity allowing for ferromagnetic correlations between conduction electron spin density and the local moment. We present an X-ray photoemission study of the heavy-fermion system CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ across the magnetic quantum phase transition of this compound at temperatures above the single-ion Kondo temperature $T_K$. In dependence of the Au concentration $x$ we observe a sudden change of the $f$-occupation number $n_f$ and the core-hole potential $U_{df}$ at the critical concentration $x_c=0.1$. We interpret these findings in the framework of the single-impurity Anderson model. A quantum phase transition (QPT) in a heavy-fermion (HF) compound may destroy the Fermi liquid groundstate. However, the conditions for this breakdown have remained obscure. We report the first direct investigation of heavy quasiparticle formation and breakdown in the canonical system CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy at elevated temperatures without the complications of lattice coherence. Surprisingly, the single-ion Kondo energy scale $T_K$ exhibits an abrupt step near the quantum critical Au concentration of $x_c=0.1$. We show theoretically that this step is expected from a highly non-linear renormalization of the local spin coupling at each Ce site, induced by spin fluctuations on neighboring sites. We study the suppression of electron localization due to the screening of disorder in a Hubbard-Anderson model. We focus on the change of the electron localization length at the Fermi level within a static picture, where interactions are absorbed into the redefinition of the random on-site energies. Two different approximations are presented, either one yielding a nonmonotonic dependence of the localization length on the interaction strength, with a pronounced maximum at an intermediate interaction strength. We consider Kondo impurity systems with multiple local orbitals, such as rare earth ions in a metallic host or multi--level quantum dots coupled to metallic leads. It is shown that the multiplet structure of the local orbitals leads to multiple Kondo peaks above the Fermi energy $E_F$, and to ``shadow'' peaks below $E_F$. We use a slave boson mean field theory, which recovers the strong coupling Fermi liquid fixed point, to calculate the Kondo peak positions, widths, and heights analytically at T=0, and NCA calculations to fit the temperature dependence of high--resolution photoemission spectra of Ce compounds. In addition, an approximate conductance quantization for transport through multi--level quantum dots or single--atom transistors in the Kondo regime due to a generalized Friedel sum rule is demonstrated., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. We present a high-resolution photoemission study on the strongly correlated Ce-compounds CeCu_6, CeCu_2Si_2, CeRu_2Si_2, CeNi_2Ge_2, and CeSi_2. Using a normalization procedure based on a division by the Fermi-Dirac distribution we get access to the spectral density of states up to an energy of 5 k_BT above the Fermi energy E_F. Thus we can resolve the Kondo resonance and the crystal field (CF) fine-structure for different temperatures above and around the Kondo temperature T_K. The CF peaks are identified with multiple Kondo resonances within the multiorbital Anderson impurity model. Our theoretical 4f spectra, calculated from an extended non-crossing approximation (NCA), describe consistently the observed photoemission features and their temperature dependence. By fitting the NCA spectra to the experimental data and extrapolating the former to low temperatures, T_K can be extracted quantitatively. The resulting values for T_K and the crystal field energies are in excellent agreement with the results from bulk sensitive measurements, e.g. inelastic neutron scattering., Comment: 16 two-column pages, 10 figures

We investigate the lasing action in coupled multi-row nanopillar waveguides of periodic or fractal structure using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, coupled to the laser rate equations. Such devices exhibit band splitting with distinct and controllable supermode formation. We demonstrate that selective lasing into each of the supermodes is possible. The structure acts as a microlaser with selectable wavelength. Lasing mode selection is achieved by means of coaxial injection seeding with a Gaussian signal of appropriate transverse amplitude and phase profiles. Based on this we propose the concept of switchable lasing as an alternative to conventional laser tuning by means of external cavity control., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We analyze the Kondo effect of a magnetic impurity attached to an ultrasmall metallic wire using the density matrix renormalization group. The spatial spin correlation function and the impurity spectral density are computed for system sizes of up to L=511 sites, covering the crossover from $L<\ell_K$ to $L > \ell_K$, with $\ell_K$ the spin screening length. %Strong mesoscopic variations of the Kondo temperature $T_K$ %and of the spectral features override, to some extent, the %even/odd effect predicted earlier for averaged quantities. We establish a proportionality between the weight of the Kondo resonance and $\ell_K$ as function of $L$. In a recent Letter, Luo et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 256602 (2004)) analyze the Fano line shapes obtained from scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) of transition metal impurities on a simple metal surface, in particular of the Ti/Au(111) and Ti/Ag(100) systems. As the key point of their analysis, they claim that there is not only a Fano interference effect between the impurity d-orbital and the conduction electron continuum, as derived in Ujsaghy et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2557 (2000)), but that the Kondo resonance in the d-electron spectral density has by itself a second Fano line shape, leading to the experimentally observed spectra. In the present note we point out that this analysis is conceptually incorrect. We present a detailed, microscopic transport theory for light in strongly scattering disordered systems whose constituent materials exhibit linear absorption or gain. Starting from Maxwell's equations, we derive general expressions for transport quantities such as energy transport velocity, transport mean free path, diffusion coefficient, and absorption/gain length. The approach is based on a fully vectorial treatment of the generalized kinetic equation and utilizes an exact Ward identity (WI). While for loss- and gainless media the WI reflects local energy conservation, the effects of absorption or coherent gain are implemented exactly by novel, additional terms in the WI. As a result of resonant (Mie) scattering from the individual scatterers, all transport quantities acquire strong, frequency-dependent renormalizations, which are, in addition, characteristically modified by absorption or gain. We illustrate the influence of various experimentally accessible parameters on these quanitities for dilute systems. Self-consistent diagrammatic approximations to the Anderson or Kondo impurity model, using an exact pseudoparticle representation of the impurity states, are reviewed. We first discuss the infrared exponents of the pseudoparticle propagators as indicators of Fermi liquid behavior through their dependence on the impurity occupation and on magnetic field. Then we discuss the Non-Crossing Approximation (NCA), identifying its strengths, but also its fundamental shortcomings. Physical arguments as well as a perturbative renormalization group analysis suggest that an infinite parquet-type resummation of two-particle vertex diagrams, the Conserving T-Matrix Approximation (CTMA) will cure the deficiencies of NCA. While the properties of the Kondo model in equilibrium are very well understood, much less is known for Kondo systems out of equilibrium. We study the properties of a quantum dot in the Kondo regime, when a large bias voltage V and/or a large magnetic field B is applied. Using the perturbative renormalization group generalized to stationary nonequilibrium situations, we calculate renormalized couplings, keeping their important energy dependence. We show that in a magnetic field the spin occupation of the quantum dot is non-thermal, being controlled by V and B in a complex way to be calculated by solving a quantum Boltzmann equation. We find that the well-known suppression of the Kondo effect at finite V>>T_K (Kondo temperature) is caused by inelastic dephasing processes induced by the current through the dot. We calculate the corresponding decoherence rate, which serves to cut off the RG flow usually well inside the perturbative regime (with possible exceptions). The Anderson model of a twofold spin degenerate impurity level in the limit of infinite Coulomb repulsion, $U \to \infty$, coupled to one and two degenerate conduction bands or channels, is considered in pseudo-particle representation. We extend the Conserving T-Matrix Approximation (CTMA), a general diagrammatic approximation scheme based on a fully renormalized computation of two-particle vertex functions in the spin and in the charge channel, to the calculation of thermodynamic and spectral properties. In the single-channel case, the CTMA yields in the Kondo regime a temperature independent Pauli spin susceptibility for temperatures below the Kondo temperature $T_K$ and down to the lowest temperatures considered, reproducing the exact spin screening in the Fermi liquid state. The impurity spectral density appears to remain non-singular down to the lowest temperatures, in agreement with Fermi liquid behavior. However, the unitarity sum rule, which is crucial for an impurity solver like the CTMA to be applicable within Dynamical Mean Field Theories for strongly correlated lattice models, is overestimated at the lowest temperatures. We argue that this shortcoming may be due to numerical imprecision and discuss an appropriate scheme for its correction. We investigate the effects of voltage induced spin-relaxation in a quantum dot in the Kondo regime. Using nonequilibrium perturbation theory, we determine the joint effect of self-energy and vertex corrections to the conduction electron T-matrix in the limit of transport voltage much larger than temperature. The logarithmic divergences, developing near the different chemical potentials of the leads, are found to be cut off by spin-relaxation rates, implying that the nonequilibrium Kondo-problem remains at weak coupling as long as voltage is much larger than the Kondo temperature., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the highly incoherent regime of hole-doped 2d Mott-Hubbard insulators at moderately small doping and temperatures T>=0.1J, where J is the exchange coupling. Within an extended dynamical mean-field theory of the t-J model and a generalized non-crossing approximation we calculate the single-particle spectral function, the dynamical susceptibility, and thermodynamic and transport quantities. Short-ranged antiferromagnetic fluctuations lead to strongly incoherent single-particle dynamics, large entropy and large electrical resistivity. At low doping a pseudogap is found to open up both in the single-particle and the spin excitation spectra leading to a decrease in entropy and resistivity. How are the properties of a metal changed by strong inelastic scattering? We investigate this question within the two-dimensional t-J model using extended dynamical mean field theory and a generalized non-crossing approximation. Short-ranged antiferromagnetic fluctuations lead to a strongly incoherent single particle dynamics, large entropy and resistance. Close to the Mott transition at low hole doping a pseudogap opens, accompanied by a drop in resistivity and an increase in the Hall constant for both lower temperatures and doping levels. We consider electron transport through a quantum dot described by the Kondo model in the regime of large transport voltage V in the presence of a magnetic field B with max(V,B) >> T_K. The electric current I and the local magnetization M are found to be universal functions of V/T_K and B/T_K, where T_K is the equilibrium Kondo temperature. We present a generalization of the perturbative renormalization group to frequency dependent coupling functions, as necessitated by the structure of bare perturbation theory. We present an extension of the non-crossing approximation (NCA), which is widely used to calculate properties of Anderson impurity models in the limit of infinite Coulomb repulsion $U\to\infty$, to the case of finite $U$. A self-consistent conserving pseudo-particle representation is derived by symmetrizing the usual NCA diagrams with respect to empty and doubly occupied local states. This requires an infinite summation of skeleton diagrams in the generating functional thus defining the ``Symmetrized finite-U NCA'' (SUNCA). We show that within SUNCA the low energy scale $T_K$ (Kondo temperature) is correctly obtained, in contrast to other simpler approximations discussed in the literature., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We review a systematic many-body method capable of describing Fermi liquid and Non-Fermi liquid behavior of quantum impurity models at low temperatures on the same footing. The crossover to the high temperature local moment regime is covered as well. The approach makes use of a pseudo-particle representation of the impurity Hilbert space in the limit of infinite Coulomb repulsion $U$ as well as for finite $U$. Approximations are derived from a generating Luttinger-Ward functional, in terms of renormalized perturbation theory in the hybridization $V$. Within a ``conserving T-matrix approximation'' (CTMA), including all two-particle vertex functions, an infinite series of leading infrared singular skeleton diagrams is included. The local constraint is strictly enforced. Applied to the SU(N) $\times$ SU(M) multichannel Anderson model the method allows to recover the Fermi liquid behavior of the single channel case, as well as the non-Fermi liquid behavior in the multi-channel case. The results are compared with the ``non-crossing approximation'' (NCA) and with data obtained by the numerical renormalization group and the Bethe ansatz. The generalization of the method to the case of finite on-site repulsion $U$ is presented in a systematical way and solved on the level of a generalized NCA, fully symmetric with respect to all virtual excitations of the model., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures. We examine the properties of a dc-biased quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime. For voltages V large compared to the Kondo temperature T_K, the physics is governed by the scales V and gamma, where gamma ~ V/ln^2(V/T_K) is the non-equilibrium decoherence rate induced by the voltage-driven current. Based on scaling arguments, self-consistent perturbation theory and perturbative renormalization group, we argue that due to the large gamma, the system can be described by renormalized perturbation theory for ln(V/T_K) >> 1. It is shown that in resistive nanowires out of equilibrium containing either single- or two-channel Kondo impurities the distribution function $f(E,U)$ obeys scaling behavior in terms of the quasiparticle energy $E$ and the bias voltage $U$. The numerically calculated $f(E,U)$ curves explain quantitatively recent experiments on Cu and Au nanowires. The systematics of the impurity concentration c_{imp} extracted from the comparison between theory and results on various Cu and Au samples strongly suggests that in these systems the scaling arises from magnetic Kondo impurities., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We present high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy studies on the Kondo resonance of the strongly-correlated Ce system CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. Exploiting the thermal broadening of the Fermi edge we analyze position, spectral weight, and temperature dependence of the low-energy 4f spectral features, whose major weight lies above the Fermi level $E_F$. We also present theoretical predictions based on the single-impurity Anderson model using an extended non-crossing approximation (NCA), including all spin-orbit and crystal field splittings of the 4f states. The excellent agreement between theory and experiment provides strong evidence that the spectral properties of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ can be described by single-impurity Kondo physics down to $T \approx 5$ K., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

When an atomic-size break junction is mechanically stretched, the total conductance of the contact remains approximately constant over a wide range of elongations, although at the same time the transmissions of the individual channels (valence orbitals of the junction atom) undergo strong variations. We propose a microscopic explanation of this phenomenon, based on Coulomb correlation effects between electrons in valence orbitals of the junction atom. The conduction electron density of states nearby a single magnetic impurity, as measured recently by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), is calculated. It is shown that the Kondo effect induces a narrow Fano resonance as an intrinsic feature in the conduction electron density of states. The line shape varies with the distance between STM tip and impurity, in qualitative agreement with experiments, and is sensitive to details of the band structure. We present data of transport measurements through a metallic nanobridge exhibiting diffusive electron transport. A logarithmic temperature dependence and a zero-bias anomaly in the differential conductance are observed, independent of magnetic field. The data can be described by a single scaling law. The theory of electron-electron interaction in disordered systems, adapted to the case of finite-size systems in non-equilibrium, yields quantitative agreement with experiment. We have developed a self-consistent conserving pseudo particle approximation for the Anderson impurity model with finite Coulomb interaction, derivable from a Luttinger Ward functional. It contains an infinite series of skeleton diagrams built out of fully renormalized Green's functions. The choice of diagrams is motivated by the Schrieffer Wolff transformation which shows that singly and doubly occupied states should appear in all bare diagrams symmetrically. Our numerical results for $T_K$ are in excellent agreement with the exact values known from the Bethe ansatz solution. The low energy physics of non-Fermi liquid Anderson impurity systems is correctly described while the present approximation fails to describe Fermi liquid systems, since some important coherent spin flip and charge transfer processes are not yet included. We review a recently developed method, based on an exact auxiliary boson representation, to describe both Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid behavior in quantum impurity systems. Coherent spin and charge fluctuation processes are taken into account in a self-consistent way and are shown to include {\it all} leading and subleading infrared singularities at any given order of the self-consistent loop expansion of the free energy. As a consequence, for the SU(N)$\times$ SU(M) Anderson impurity models the correct temperature dependence of the susceptibility is recovered over the entire temperature range, including Fermi liquid or non-Fermi liquid behavior below the Kondo temperature $T_K$. We have observed interaction effects in the differential conductance $G$ of short, disordered metal bridges in a well-controlled non-equilibrium situation, where the distribution function has a double Fermi step. A logarithmic scaling law is found both for the temperature and for the voltage dependence of $G$ in all samples. The absence of magnetic field dependence and the low dimensionality of our samples allow us to distinguish between several possible interaction effects, proposed recently in nanoscopic samples. The conduction electron density of states nearby single magnetic impurities, as measured recently by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), is calculated, taking into account tunneling into conduction electron states only. By means of magneto-optical Kerr effect we observe for the first time antiferromagnetic coupling between ferromagnetic layers across an amorphous metallic spacer layer. Biquadratic coupling occurs at the transition from a ferromagnetically to an antiferromagnetically coupled region. Scanning tunneling microscopy images of all involved layers are used to extract thickness fluctuations and to verify the amorphous state of the spacer. The M-channel Anderson impurity model (M=1,2) is studied in the Kondo limit with a finite voltage bias applied to the conduction electron reservoirs. Using the Non-Crossing Approximation (NCA), we calculate the local spectral functions, the differential conductance, and susceptibility at non-zero bias for symmetric as well as asymmetric coupling of the impurity to the leads. We describe an effective procedure to solve the NCA integral equations which enables us to reach temperatures far below the Kondo scale. This allows us to study the scaling regime where the conductance depends on the bias only via a scaling function. Our results are applicable to both tunnel junctions and to point contacts. We present a general formula which allows one to go between the two cases of tunnel junctions and point contacts. We show that the presence of Fermi or non-Fermi liquid behavior in the SU(N) x SU(M) Anderson impurity models may be read off the infrared threshold exponents governing the spinon and holon dynamics in a slave boson representation of these models. We construct a conserving T-matrix approximation which recovers the exact exponents with good numerical accuracy. Our approximation includes both coherent spin flip scattering and charge fluctuation processes. For the single-channel case the tendency to form bound states drastically modifies the low energy behavior. A comparative study of the numerical renormalization group and non-crossing approximation results for the spectral functions of the $U=\infty$ Anderson impurity model is carried out. The non-crossing approximation is the simplest conserving approximation and has led to useful insights into strongly correlated models of magnetic impurities. At low energies and temperatures the method is known to be inaccurate for dynamical properties due to the appearance of singularities in the physical Green's functions. The problems in developing alternative reliable theories for dynamical properties have made it difficult to quantify these inaccuracies. As a first step in obtaining a theory which is valid also in the low energy regime, we identify the origin of the problems within the NCA. We show, by comparison with close to exact NRG calculations for the auxiliary and physical particle spectral functions, that the main source of error in the NCA is in the lack of vertex corrections in the convolution formulae for physical Green's functions. We show that the dynamics of the auxiliary particles within NCA is essentially correct for a large parameter region, including the physically interesting Kondo regime, for all energy scales down to $T_{0}$, the low energy scale of the model, and often well below this scale. Despite the satisfactory description of the auxiliary particle dynamics, the physical spectral functions are not obtained accurately on scales $\sim T_{0}$. We use the numerical renormalization group to calculate the auxiliary spectral functions of the $U=\infty$ Anderson impurity model. The slave--boson and pseudo--fermion spectral functions diverge at the threshold with exponents $\alpha_{b}$ and $\alpha_{f}$ given in terms of the conduction electron phase shifts by the X--ray photoemission and the X--ray absorption exponents respectively. The exact exponents obtained here depend on the impurity occupation number, in contrast to the NCA results.
