Abstract

Plant transpiration links physiological responses of vegetation to water supply and demand with hydrological, energy, and carbon budgets at the land-atmosphere interface. However, despite being the main land evaporative flux at the global scale, transpiration and its response to environmental drivers are currently not well constrained by observations. Here we introduce the first global compilation of whole-plant transpiration data from sap flow measurements (SAPFLUXNET, https://sapfluxnet.creaf.cat/, last access: 8 June 2021). We harmonized and quality-controlled individual datasets supplied by contributors worldwide in a semi-automatic data workflow implemented in the R programming language. Datasets include sub-daily time series of sap flow and hydrometeorological drivers for one or more growing seasons, as well as metadata on the stand characteristics, plant attributes, and technical details of the measurements. SAPFLUXNET contains 202 globally distributed datasets with sap flow time series for 2714 plants, mostly trees, of 174 species. SAPFLUXNET has a broad bioclimatic coverage, with woodland/shrubland and temperate forest biomes especially well represented (80% of the datasets). The measurements cover a wide variety of stand structural characteristics and plant sizes. The datasets encompass the period between 1995 and 2018, with 50% of the datasets being at least 3 years long. Accompanying radiation and vapour pressure deficit data are available for most of the datasets, while on-site soil water content is available for 56% of the datasets. Many datasets contain data for species that make up 90% or more of the total stand basal area, allowing the estimation of stand transpiration in diverse ecological settings. SAPFLUXNET adds to existing plant trait datasets, ecosystem flux networks, and remote sensing products to help increase our understanding of plant water use, plant responses to drought, and ecohydrological processes. Abstract

Despite the importance of surface energy budgets (SEBs) for land-climate interactions in the Arctic, uncertainties in their prediction persist. In-situ observational data of SEB components - useful for research and model validation - are collected at relatively few sites across the terrestrial Arctic, and not all available datasets are readily interoperable. Furthermore, the terrestrial Arctic consists of a diversity of vegetation types, which are generally not well represented in land surface schemes of current Earth system models. Therefore, we here provide four datasets comprising: 1. Harmonized, standardized and aggregated in situ observations of SEB components at 64 vegetated and glaciated sites north of 60° latitude, in the time period 1994-2021 2. A description of all study sites and associated environmental conditions, including the vegetation types, which correspond to the classification of the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM, Raynolds et al. 2019). 3. Data generated in a literature synthesis from 358 study sites on vegetation or glacier (>=60°N latitude) covered by 148 publications. 4. Metadata, including data contributor information and measurement heights of variables associated with Oehri et al. 2022.

Abstract

Despite the importance of surface energy budgets (SEBs) for land-climate interactions in the Arctic, uncertainties in their prediction persist. In situ observational data of SEB components - useful for research and model validation - are collected at relatively few sites across the terrestrial Arctic, and not all available datasets are readily interoperable. Furthermore, the terrestrial Arctic consists of a diversity of vegetation types, which are generally not well represented in land surface schemes of current Earth system models. This dataset describes the environmental conditions for 64 tundra and glacier sites (>=60°N latitude) across the Arctic, for which in situ measurements of surface energy budget components were harmonized (see Oehri et al. 2022). These environmental conditions are (proxies of) potential drivers of SEB-components and could therefore be called SEB-drivers. The associated environmental conditions, include the vegetation types graminoid tundra, prostrate dwarf-shrub tundra, erect-shrub tundra, wetland complexes, barren complexes (≤ 40% horizontal plant cover), boreal peat bogs and glacier. These land surface types (apart from boreal peat bogs) correspond to the main classification units of the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM, Raynolds et al. 2019). For each site, additional climatic and biophysical variables are available, including cloud cover, snow cover duration, permafrost characteristics, climatic conditions and topographic conditions.

This dataset comprises harmonized, standardized and aggregated in-situ observations of surface energy budget components measured at 64 sites on vegetated and glaciated sites north of 60° latitude, in the time period from 1994 till 2021. The surface energy budget components include net radiation, sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, ground heat flux, net shortwave radiation, net longwave radiation, surface temperature and albedo, which were aggregated to daily mean, minimum and maximum values from hourly and half-hourly measurements. Data were retrieved from the monitoring networks FLUXNET, AmeriFlux, AON, GC-Net and PROMICE.

Abstract

Plant transpiration links physiological responses of vegetation to water supply and demand with hydrological, energy, and carbon budgets at the land-atmosphere interface. However, despite being the main land evaporative flux at the global scale, transpiration and its response to environmental drivers are currently not well constrained by observations. Here we introduce the first global compilation of whole-plant transpiration data from sap flow measurements (SAPFLUXNET, https://sapfluxnet.creaf.cat/, last access: 8 June 2021). We harmonized and quality-controlled individual datasets supplied by contributors worldwide in a semi-automatic data workflow implemented in the R programming language. Datasets include sub-daily time series of sap flow and hydrometeorological drivers for one or more growing seasons, as well as metadata on the stand characteristics, plant attributes, and technical details of the measurements. SAPFLUXNET contains 202 globally distributed datasets with sap flow time series for 2714 plants, mostly trees, of 174 species. SAPFLUXNET has a broad bioclimatic coverage, with woodland/shrubland and temperate forest biomes especially well represented (80% of the datasets). The measurements cover a wide variety of stand structural characteristics and plant sizes. The datasets encompass the period between 1995 and 2018, with 50% of the datasets being at least 3 years long. Accompanying radiation and vapour pressure deficit data are available for most of the datasets, while on-site soil water content is available for 56% of the datasets. Many datasets contain data for species that make up 90% or more of the total stand basal area, allowing the estimation of stand transpiration in diverse ecological settings. SAPFLUXNET adds to existing plant trait datasets, ecosystem flux networks, and remote sensing products to help increase our understanding of plant water use, plant responses to drought, and ecohydrological processes. SAPFLUXNET version 0.1.5 is freely available from the Zenodo repository (10.5281/zenodo.3971689; Poyatos et al., 2020a). Abstract

Plant transpiration links physiological responses of vegetation to water supply and demand with hydrological, energy, and carbon budgets at the land-atmosphere interface. However, despite being the main land evaporative flux at the global scale, transpiration and its response to environmental drivers are currently not well constrained by observations. Here we introduce the first global compilation of whole-plant transpiration data from sap flow measurements (SAPFLUXNET, https://sapfluxnet.creaf.cat/, last access: 8 June 2021). We harmonized and quality-controlled individual datasets supplied by contributors worldwide in a semi-automatic data workflow implemented in the R programming language. Datasets include sub-daily time series of sap flow and hydrometeorological drivers for one or more growing seasons, as well as metadata on the stand characteristics, plant attributes, and technical details of the measurements. SAPFLUXNET contains 202 globally distributed datasets with sap flow time series for 2714 plants, mostly trees, of 174 species. SAPFLUXNET has a broad bioclimatic coverage, with woodland/shrubland and temperate forest biomes especially well represented (80% of the datasets). The measurements cover a wide variety of stand structural characteristics and plant sizes. The datasets encompass the period between 1995 and 2018, with 50% of the datasets being at least 3 years long. Accompanying radiation and vapour pressure deficit data are available for most of the datasets, while on-site soil water content is available for 56% of the datasets. Many datasets contain data for species that make up 90% or more of the total stand basal area, allowing the estimation of stand transpiration in diverse ecological settings. Abstract

Soils are warming as air temperatures rise across the Arctic and Boreal region concurrent with the expansion of tall-statured shrubs and trees in the tundra. Changes in vegetation structure and function are expected to alter soil thermal regimes, thereby modifying climate feedbacks related to permafrost thaw and carbon cycling. However, current understanding of vegetation impacts on soil temperature is limited to local or regional scales and lacks the generality necessary to predict soil warming and permafrost stability on a pan-Arctic scale. Here we synthesize shallow soil and air temperature observations with broad spatial and temporal coverage collected across 106 sites representing nine different vegetation types in the permafrost region. We showed ecosystems with tall-statured shrubs and trees (>40 cm) have warmer shallow soils than those with short-statured tundra vegetation when normalized to a constant air temperature. In tree and tall shrub vegetation types, cooler temperatures in the warm season do not lead to cooler mean annual soil temperature indicating that ground thermal regimes in the cold-season rather than the warm-season are most critical for predicting soil warming in ecosystems underlain by permafrost. Our results suggest that the expansion of tall shrubs and trees into tundra regions can amplify shallow soil warming, and could increase the potential for increased seasonal thaw depth and increase soil carbon cycling rates and lead to increased carbon dioxide loss and further permafrost thaw.

A major challenge in marketing in the 1990s is the management of the trademarks of brand names as a valuable asset in order to enhance brand equity. The concept of brand equity is predicated upon the assumption that the commitment of customers to brand name products offers a great marketing asset that can be developed. Brand equity is developed through the skillful management of trademarks that define the products in the minds of customers. The effective management of trademark assets enhances the worth of the trademark through the successful positioning of the trademark. The successful positioning of trademarks is dependent on three major variables: the target market, the frame of competitive reference, and the point of competitive difference. Firms should adopt a trademark portfolio management program focused on trademark positioning to enhance the value of trademark assets.

Abstract

A rise in global air temperatures is expected to increase permafrost thaw and alter ecosystem carbon and water cycles in Arctic regions. The coupling between the soil temperature in the active layer (soil between the ground surface and permafrost) and air temperature is a key component in understanding permafrost stability and ecosystem change. Vegetation can affect soil temperature through a variety of mechanisms such as canopy shading, impacts on soil thermal conductivity via soil organic inputs or soil water uptake, albedo, and winter snow trapping. However, the relative importance of the vegetative effects on soil temperature is uncertain across large spatial scales and across different vegetative communities and ecosystem types. We compiled data on a Pan-Arctic scale pairing air and soil temperature with vegetation and ecosystem data to examine the impacts of vegetation on the decoupling of air and soil temperatures. We analyzed the summer thawing degree days, winter freezing degree days, and n factors (degree days soil/degree days air) from sites across the Arctic. Our results indicate that the decoupling between summer air and soil temperatures is more variable in boreal ecosystems than tundra ecosystems, and boreal ecosystems have lower winter n-factors than tundra ecosystems. Summer n-factors were more variable than winter n-factors, and had high variability within study sites. Vegetative and ecosystem characteristics can be key drivers of spatial and temporal variability in active layer soil temperature, particularly during the summer. Quantifying the impacts of vegetation on active layer temperature is critical to understanding how changes in vegetation under climate change can further affect permafrost stability and soil temperature.

Abstract

In the market exists a large variety of media devices, reaching from mobile handsets equipped with headphones up to an ultra-high resolution display connected with a large loudspeaker setup. This makes it difficult for the broadcast industry to provide all of these devices with appropriate data at once. In the EU- funded FascinatE project a system is being developed that considers the individual requirements of a particular end-user device and allows a user to interactively navigate in an audiovisual scene. This paper focus on the latest audio related developments in capturing and replaying audio objects and the entire sound field with respect to the selected view on any loudspeaker setup. First results of a UK Premier League football match show practical aspects of the spatial audio recording and its playback on a 3D loudspeaker setup that can be used for small event rooms.

20. Recording spatial audio signals for interactive broadcast systems

Abstract

Spatial audio processing is a key feature of the European funded FascinatE project. The FascinatE project will develop a system to allow end-users to interactively navigate and view around an ultra-high resolution video panorama showing a live event, with the accompanying audio automatically changing to match the selected view. The output will be adapted to their particular kind of device, covering anything from a mobile handset to an immersive panoramic display. The audio part of this project makes a spatial sound description available to the user. The facilitated technologies include Higher Order Ambisonics as well as Wave Field Synthesis. For Ambisonics, sound field information is recorded using microphone arrays like the SoundField microphone for first order signals or the Eigenmike for Higher Order Ambisonics representations. A Premier League match at the Stamford Bridge, London, was captured to provide audio-visual content form a live event. For the audio recording a number of standard microphones, shotguns, a SoundField microphone, and an Eigenmike were used. This contribution addresses the signal processing theory as well as practical aspects of spatial audio recordings. The theoretical part includes the processing of Higher Order Ambisonics signals for signal manipulation and adaptation to the visual content, as well as the detection of sound events from shotgun microphones for Wave Field Synthesis processing. The practical part covers the positioning of the microphones, noise problems and a basic rating of the recorded signals.

Abstract

FascinatE is a European funded project that aims at developing a system to allow end users to interactively navigate around a video panorama showing a live event, with the accompanying audio automatically changing to match the selected view. The audiovisual content will be adapted to the users particular kind of device, covering anything from a mobile handset equipped with headphones to an immersive panoramic display connected with large loudspeaker setup. We describe how to handle audio content in the FascinatE context, covering simple stereo through to spatial sound fields. This will be performed by a mixture of Higher Order Ambisonics and Wave Field Synthesis. Our paper focuses on the greatest challenges for both techniques when capturing, transmitting and rendering the audio scene.

47. MK0787 (N-formimidoyl thienamycin): evaluation of in vitro and in vivo activities

Abstract

The practical application of thienamycin, a novel beta-lactam antibiotic with a broad activity spectrum, was compromised by problems of instability. MK0787, N-formimidoyl thienamycin, does not have this liability. As reported, bacterial species resistant to most beta-lactam antibiotics, such as Pseudomonas aeurginosa, Serratis, Enterobacter, Enterococcus, and Bacteroides spp., are uniformly susceptible to MK0787, usually at one-half the inhibitory level of thienamycin. Bactericidal activity usually occurs at the minimal inhibitory concentration endpoint. Activity was reduced only at the highest inoculum densities tested and by a lessor factor than was observed with reference beta-lactam antibiotic active against P. aeruginosa and beta-lactamase-bearing strains. MK0787 exhibits a broad spectrum of in vivo activity when evaluated parenterally for efficacy against systemic infections in mice. The order of potency in vivo, 0.03 to 0.06 mg/kg for gram-positive species and 0.65 to 3.8 mg/kg for gram-negative infections including Pseudomonas, exceeded that of thienamycin and was at least 10-fold superior to reference beta-lactam antibiotics including two recently developed agents with antipseudomonal activity, cefotaxime and LY127935.

48. A sensitive and specific PCR method to detect Helicobacter felis in a conventional mouse model.

Abstract

Although many detection methods have been used to determine Helicobacter colonization in small animal models, the sensitivity and specificity of these detection methods are limited. To improve the Helicobacter felis conventional mouse model for accurate evaluation of therapeutic regimens, we developed a PCR for detection of, and a competitive PCR for quantitation of, H. felis in viral antibody-free (VAF) mice. The PCR was based on the H. felis 16S rRNA gene. An internal control DNA was used for competitive quantitation of the PCR. VAF conventional Swiss-Webster mice were infected with an H. felis culture by oral gavage. At various times after H. felis challenge and therapy, stomach mucosa was collected and evaluated by PCR. PCR detected approximately 50 to 100 H. felis cells per mouse stomach and showed no cross-reaction with other bacteria commonly found in mouse stomachs. Colonization of H. felis in the mouse stomach was confirmed by culture isolation from germfree mice and histological examination of VAF mice. Response to therapy in this H. felis model correlated well with results seen in human clinical trials with H. pylori. A model utilizing PCR detection which may be useful for discovering new antibiotics and/or vaccines against Helicobacter ulcer disease has been developed.

Abstract

N-Formimidoyl thienamycin (MK0787) undergoes renal metabolism by a dipeptidase, dehydropeptidase I, located on the brush border of the proximal tubular cells. The effects of two inhibitors (MK-789 and MK-791) of dehydropeptidase I on the pharmacokinetics of N-formimidoyl thienamycin were studied in 41 healthy subjects receiving various combinations of N-formimidoyl thienamycin and MK-789 or MK-791. Both inhibitors affected the plasma kinetics of N-formimidoyl thienamycin only to a small extent. Plasma concentrations and the area under the plasma concentration curve increased about 20% with a proportional decrease in plasma clearance. Plasma half-life was not altered significantly. Coadministration of MK-789 or MK-791 resulted in uniform and marked increases in urinary recovery and renal clearance of N-formimidoyl thienamycin. Thus, at an N-formimidoyl thienamycin/MK-791 ratio of 1:0.25 or higher, the urinary recovery was about 72% in all subjects, whereas it varied between 7.7 and 43% when N-formimidoyl thienamycin was given alone. The ratio of the N-formimidoyl thienamycin and MK-791 doses affected response. At relatively higher doses of MK-791, significant increases of N-formimidoyl thienamycin urinary recovery, renal clearance, and urine concentrations occurred during the later part of the 10-h observation period after each administration. At a 1:1 ratio of the two drugs, the inhibition of renal metabolism of N-formimidoyl thienamycin was maintained for at least 8 h, whereas renal clearance declined as soon as 4 h after the administration of a 1:0.25 ratio. The results indicated that MK-789 and MK-791 alter the renal excretion of N-formimidoyl thienamycin from glomerular filtration plus tubular secretion to glomerular filtration only, possibly by competitively inhibiting the penetration of N-formimidoyl thienamycin into the proximal tubular cells.

50. Cephamycins, a new family of beta-lactam antibiotics. IV. In vivo studies.

Abstract

Cephamycin A was found to be more active in vivo than cephamycin B. In comparison with cephamycin C, cephamycin A was more active against gram-positive organisms but less active against gram-negative organisms. Given subcutaneously, cephamycin C had good in vivo gram-negative activity, comparing favorably with cephalothin and cephaloridine against cephalosporin-susceptible organisms. In general, against the gram-negative organisms, it was more active than cephalothin or cephalosporin C and about as active as cephaloridine. In addition, cephamycin C protected mice against beta-lactamase-producing Proteus cultures, including clinically isolated strains. The compound is remarkably nontoxic. Cephamycin C was detected in the serum and recovered from the urine of treated mice to about the same extent as cephaloridine. Like cephaloridine and cephalosporin C, cephamycin C must be excreted mainly by glomerular filtration, because the use of probenecid did not enhance the therapeutic effectiveness nor concentrations of these agents in the sera of treated mice.
