Straipsnis skirtas svastikai, ja paženklintiems arba svastikos formą turintiems daiktams, kurie priklauso XIII– XIV a. Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės laikotarpio horizontui. Ieškoma atsakymo į klausimą, koks jis – universalus ženklas ir simbolis – senovės lietuvių kultūros ir religijos terpėje, kokių būta svastikos formų ir ją lydinčių mitinių reikšmių. XIII–XIV a. archeologinėje medžiagoje svastikos nėra gausios, tačiau užima reikšmingą vietą. Jos ženklina tokius vienetinius apeiginius daiktus kaip Vilniaus Gedimino pilies kieme rastas raginis dviašmenis kirvis (1 pav.) ir tokius brangius dirbinius kaip Kernavės (Kriveikiškio) kapinyno kapuose rasti sidabro lydinio žiedai. Apskritai svastika buvo ženklinami ir kasdienei apyvokai, ir šventėms (ar konkrečioms apeigoms) skirti daiktai, pagaminti iš rago, medžio, molio, spalvotų metalų (2–6, 10, 11 pav.). Tačiau ženklas turėjo skirtingas formas, jo vaizdavimo kanono nebūta (7–9 pav.). Beje, svastikos statiniai ant vienpusių daiktų vienodai dažnai buvo kreipiami abiem kryptimis, o ant dvipusių daiktų svastika vienu metu žiūrėjo į abi puses, kas pasakytina ir apie sutampančius veidrodinius jos atvaizdus. Reikšmingi taip pat gali būti tyrinėjant ženklo braižymo schemą išryškėję skirtumai – ant rago ir medžio svastikos raižytos bent jau trejopai (12 pav.): 1) Kryžmos viena su kita stačiu kampu buvo kryžiuojamos paprastai, ir tai yra pirminė, bene labiausiai paplitusi, forma, kuri nuolat kartojasi XIX a. – XX a. pirmosios pusės etnografinėje medžiagoje; 2) Prie vienos iš kryžmų buvo jungiamos kitos kryžmos pusės – ši forma artima daugiausia iš vytinių juostų ir kitų archeologinių bei etnografinių objektų žinomiems pusinės svastikos variantams; 3) Visos keturios svastikos alkūnės iš centro buvo rėžiamos atskirai, ir ši svastikos schema iš esmės skiriasi nuo pirmųjų dviejų. Tokia forma artima svastikai, kurios centre buvo paliekamas tuščias įrėmintas plotas, o tai yra vienas iš dviejų Saulės ženklo tipų. Svastika paženklintų arba svastikos formą turinčių daiktų kontekstuose išniro du XIII a. lietuvių panteono dievai suverenai – Perkūnas ir Kalvelis. Tai patvirtina genetinį svastikos ryšį su baltų ir senovės lietuvių religinei tradicijai būdingu ugnies ženklu – lygiakraščiu kryžiumi. Nėra pagrindo manyti, kad du arba keturi jo statiniai keistų simbolinę reikšmę. Tačiau papildomą apsauginę funkciją teikė viso šio ženklo pasukimas 45 laipsnių kampu. Ryšys su ugnimi ir Perkūnu senovės lietuvių svastiką skiria nuo universalaus simbolio. Šiandien dar trūksta duomenų pasakyti, ar šis skirtumas kilo kitados svastikai su soliarine simbolika patekus į baltiškąją terpę, ar yra nepriklausomos šio ženklo, pažįstamo visoms indoeuropiečių ir daugeliui kitų kultūrų, raidos pasekmė. The paper focuses on the swastika, artefacts of antler, wood, metal and clay marked with the swastika, and swastika-shaped items from the 13th and 14th centuries in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. An answer is sought to the question what the swastika, a universal sign and symbol, represented in ancient Lithuanian culture and religion, and what kinds of shapes and accompanying mythological meanings it possessed. It is concluded that in the 13th and 14th centuries, the swastika did not have a canon of representation, and its perpendiculars on one-sided items faced in one or the other rotary direction (clockwise or anti-clockwise), while on two-sided ones they faced in both directions simultaneously. Two Lithuanian gods, Perkūnas (Thunder) and Kalvelis (Blacksmith), emerged in the explored contexts of items marked with a swastika. This confirms the genetic connection between the swastika and an equilateral cross, the sign of fire or Thunder, characteristic of the Baltic and ancient Lithuanian religious tradition. To date, there is no reason to believe that the perpendiculars could change the symbolic meaning.

Straipsnyje gvildenama hipotezė apie inovacinę pietų aukštaičių papročio puošti kryžių apdangalais kilmę (suponuojamas kultūrinis rytų slavų skolinys), kuri iki šiol interpretuojama pasitelkus (a) baltų mitologijos rekonstruotus vaizdinius, (b) hipotetinę sąsają su nekrokultu, (c) vaisingumo burto refleksiją, (d) aukojimus, atnašavimus ar sakralinį tarpininkavimą. Remdamiesi išvardytais apeigų aspektais, kai kurie dailės istorikai net rekonstravo mitologemą 'baltų prijuostėlė'. Remiantis tipologiniu ir analitiniu aprašomuoju bei arealinės lingvistikos metodais, pateikta pietų aukštaičių papročio puošti kryžių apdangalais tradicijos genezė; patikslinta etnokultūrinė faktografija (taip pat ir kaimynų rytų slavų – gudų), siekiant įvertinti pirminį papročio pobūdį, t. y. nustatyti skolinio ar veldinio statusą. The article looks at the origins of the tradition of decorating roadside crosses with aprons and ribbons in the Southern Highlands area. Most roadside crosses were put up in previous centuries by the local population as a sign of their Catholic faith. In the rural region of southeast Lithuania, crosses called ‘aprons’ crucifixes’ can be found. These are votive crosses. They belong to villages, and usually stand beside a public right of way near the entrance to the village. Votive crosses were put up by one person or the village community in gratitude for being rescued from death, from illness, infection or any other mortal danger. This type of cross was also put up to ward off natural afflictions such as infertility. It should be noted that an identical cultural tradition of decorating votive crosses is widespread in many rural regions of Belarus. It should be emphasised that votive crosses with textile offerings in the southeast region of Lithuania and Belarus should not be related to any particular ancient Balt or Slav female deity, or to any archaic ritual practice, or to necroculture, etc, as has been done up to the present. Therefore, the reconstruction of the mythologeme of the 'Baltic apron' is impossible. It can assumed that the origin of the roadside cross decorated with aprons and ribbons may be an imitation of the hem, typical of the pastoral rod curtain used in the Orthodox Church (CS 'сулóкъ/сулóгъ', ‘pannisellus’). The pastoral rod itself was related to the cross by St Symeon of Thessalonica (c. 1381–1429). The phenomenon can be related to the tradition of 'sacra sub velo' (cf. Hebrew 'tahaṯ yǝrīǝōṯ', ‘under the veils’), genetically related to the sacred connotation of the celestial referent and the Temple of Jerusalem. The house of the curtain (the Temple) itself was divided into three central parts. The first, with no door, called the porch ('ūlām'), was situated at the east, and was wider than the other two rooms. Beyond the porch was the 'hēyḵāl' (the sanctuary). A golden altar for incense stood in the middle of the room. To the right of the altar, on entering the sanctuary, stood the Showbread Table, and to the left was the golden 'menorah'. The Holy of Holies was beyond the sanctuary to the west. It was separated from it by two curtains. In some cases, it is not absolutely clear how many curtains there were, or how they were configured with respect to the set of doors. Josephus mentioned just a single veil. The Mishnah text describes two curtains as forming a corridor, with access to the corridor coming from the left (the south) side, and from the corridor to the Holy of Holies on the right (north) side. On the Day of Atonement, the high priest was to bring blood into the Holy Place and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord in front of the holy curtain of the sanctuary. To summarise the outcome of the research into the origin of decorative aspects (an apron and ribbons) of roadside crosses in the Southern Highlands, the following conclusions are made: 1. The phenomenon should be ascribed to cultural innovations of non-Baltic origin, due to the identical and prevalent tradition among the Belarusians. 2. A roadside cross decorated with aprons and ribbons possibly presupposes an imitation of the pastoral rod curtain (i.e. CS 'сулóкъ/сулóгъ', ‘pannisellus’) used in the Orthodox Church. 3. The primary character of the analysed tradition may hypothetically be related to the realia of proto-Semitic peoples (cf. the Jerusalem Temple = 'the house of the curtain'), but not to inherited Balt or East Slav cultural motifs.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama Kryžių kalno tapatumo samprata. Aptariami kraštovaizdžio objektų tapatumą formuojantys veiksniai, tapatumo prasmių ir simbolių veikimas. Dominuojantys naratyvai apima nacionalinius ir bendruomeninius, religinius ir mistinius, tautosakinius ir turistinius, kultūrinius ir asmeninius aspektus. Išskiriamos ir aptariamos šešios pagrindinės šio kraštovaizdžio objekto simbolinio tapatumo sampratos. Kryžių kalnas pristatomas kaip skirtingų idėjų, vertybių ir įsitikinimų raiškos vieta. Reikšmių ir simbolių priskyrimas Kryžių kalnui yra dinamiškas procesas, apimantis skirtingus diskursus. areas: historical, religious, ethnographic, cultural, geographical, and others. The multiplicity of the identity of the Hill of crosses is partly due to its unique history. We distinguish six main concepts of the symbolic identity of this landscape object, in which one of the narrative is dominant, but overlapping with others: 1. The Hill of Crosses as a symbol of national and spiritual freedom, a symbol of resistance to occupants (Narrative: national symbol, place of resistance to occupants, place of national identity); 2. The Hill of Crosses as a symbol of personal and national rebirth (Narrative: the place of personal celebrations, the symbol of renewal and rebirth); 3. The Hill of Crosses as a place of religious devotion (Narrative: a religious place, a symbol of Christian faith); 4. The Hill of Crosses as a cultural and tourist space (Narrative: the place for fostering Lithuanian traditions and culture, one of the main tourism objects in Lithuania); 5. The Hill of Crosses – A scary and terrifying place (Narrative: An exclusive, interesting place, but uncomfortable, connected with a strange and the beyond world); 6. The Hill of Crosses as a mystic place (Narrative: A place associated with mystic stories, the place of determination of people’s destiny). Narratives and concepts of the symbolic identity of places are reflected both on social and personal levels. The whole complex of interconnections determines that the phenomenon of the Hill of Crosses includes different discourses of the Lithuanian history and culture. The Hill of Crosses is unique as it is not a static object of the cultural heritage. Everyone can contribute to the development of its visual and symbolic meanings.

Apie senąją Žemaitijos kryždirbystę parašyta nemažai, tačiau sistemingas šiuolaikinių paminklų fiksavimas ir tyrinėjimas nėra toks nuoseklus, koks turėtų būti, nes didele dalimi tai priklauso nuo atskirų entuziastų atsidavimo. Tad reikalingą ir svarbų darbą atliko Šiaulių apskrities Povilo Višinskio, Šiaulių, Plungės ir Akmenės rajonų savivaldybių viešųjų bibliotekų darbuotojai, organizuodami dvi kraštotyros ekspedicijas Kur liūdi kryžiai pakelėm, kurių metu buvo fiksuojami ir aprašomi sakralinių bei privačių erdvių, pakelių, miestelių ir kaimų paminklai. Šį projektą finansavo Lietuvos kultūros ministerija ir Lietuvos kultūros taryba. Šiaulių rajone vykusios pirmosios ekspedicijos pagrindu buvo parengtas gana išsamiai paminklus aprašantis Alės Počiulpaitės tekstas1, antrosios ekspedicijos medžiaga, surinkta Akmenės rajone, pasitarnavo šio straipsnio gimimui. Bibliotekos darbuotojai ne tik kruopščiai aprašė ir išmatavo visų tipų paminklus, bet nurodė ir jų pastatymo datas, autorius, statymo motyvus bei pateikėjus, o tekstinę ir iliustracinę medžiagą sudėjo į didelės apimties kraštotyros darbą2, kuriuo šiame straipsnyje ir naudojamasi. Akmenės apylinkių kryždirbystės paminklai bus aptariami pagal medžiagas (medis, metalas, akmuo) ir struktūrą (kryžiai, koplytstulpiai, koplytėlės, šiuolaikinės interpretacijos), nurodant senajai Žemaitijos tradicijai ir šiandienos kryždirbystei būdingus bruožus, aptariama ir paminklų vietos bei paskirtis. Gaila, kad ekspedicijų metu nebuvo fiksuojami antkapiniai paminklai – jie sudarytų pilnesnį šio krašto šiandieninės kryždirbystės vaizdą, todėl, neturint kapinių erdvėse esančių paminklų pavyzdžių, išvados tėra pirminės. Much is written about old Samogitian cross-crafting, but the systematic recording and exploration of modern monuments is not as consistent as it should be, because it largely depends on the devotion of individual enthusiasts. Thus, the necessary and important work was carried out by the employees of the public libraries of Povilas Višinskis in Šiauliai, Plungė and Akmenė District Municipalities, who organized two ethnographic expeditions, during which the monuments of sacral and private spaces, roadsides, towns and villages were recorded and described. This project was funded by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture and the Lithuanian Culture Council. On the basis of the first expedition in Šiauliai district, the text of Alė Počiulpaitė describing the monuments in detail was prepared, and the material of the second expedition, collected in Akmenė district, served the purpose of this article. Not only did the workers of the library thoroughly described and measured all types of monuments, but also specified their dates, builders, motives and contributors, and compiled textual and illustrative material into a large-scale ethnographic work which was used to write this article.

In 2017, the Šiauliai regional Povilas Višinskas public library organised an expedition dedicated to researching this region’s cross-making traditions. In this article by art historian Alė Počiulpaitė, based on material from the expeditions, characteristic features of cross-making in this region are highlighted: evolution of the tradition, the spread of wooden crosses, roofed-pillars and wayside shrines, the peculiarities of their shape and decoration, the reasons for building and devotional practices of masters (many of them – local). On the basis of form, in Šiauliai region, cross-shaped crosses were most widespread, as well as roofed-pillars, wayside shrines, some shrines on the ground or in trees, sculptural monuments by folk artists. They can be found in churchyards, villages, towns, roadsides, farmsteads, old and no longer used cemeteries. The publication is supplemented with material collected by the author.

Publikacijoje pristatomas mokslininkas, kalbotyrininkas, etnografas, muziejininkas Bronislavas Petras Pilsudskis (Bronisław Piotr Piłsudski) (1866–1918), kaip vienas iš pirmųjų XX a. pradžios Lietuvos kryždirbystės skleidėjų Vakarų Europoje. Savo pastebėjimus apie lietuviškų kryžių pastatymo tradicijas, jų formos tyrinėjimus B. Pilsudskis atskleidė 1916 m. išleistoje knygelėje „Lietuviški kryžiai“. Apžvelgiamos šios knygelės atsiradimo priežastys, ryšys su 1906 m. pasirodžiusia pirmąja solidžia Mykolo Eustachijaus Brenšteino (Michał Eustachy Brensztejn) (1874–1938) studija apie žemaičių kryžius ir koplytėles. „Lietuviški kryžiai“ – tekstas labai jautrus, lakoniškas, papildytas piešiniais, įprasmina tautos paveldo reikšmę dvasinio gyvenimo lygmenyje. The works of Bronisław Piłsudski, a prominent Lithuanian-born scientist, linguist, ethnographer and museologist, are not particularly well known to Lithuanian audiences. In 2017, the Lithuanian Art Museum, together with the Polish Institute in Vilnius and Tatra Museum in Zakopane, held an exhibition at the LDM Radvilas Palace entitled Bronisław Piłsudski (1866–1918) – Ethnographer and Museologist. B. Piłsudski became known throughout the world thanks to his scientific research, which he began in 1887 during forced exile in Sakhalin, focused on the ethnographic cultural heritage, vocabulary, customs and traditions of diminishing local tribes: Ainu, Nivkh (Gilyak) and Orak. B. Piłsudski published his notes on Lithuanian cross building traditions and a study of their shapes in his book Lithuanian Crosses, released in 1916 in Switzerland. The work shows his desire to honour the ethnographic cultural heritage of his motherland, i.e. the artistic work of traditional Lithuanian cross makers, dievdirbiai (carvers of sacral statuettes), and blacksmiths. Lithuanian crosses stand out as monuments to the nation’s faith, piety, spiritual life, history and customs, attesting to how significant the creative work of folk artists is for the nation. The book shows some signs of being influenced by the 1906 study on Samogitian crosses and chapels by Mykolas Eustachijus Breinšteinas. Piłsudski’s text and illustrations provided early 20th century Europe with an opportunity to learn about cross making – the most unique sphere of Lithuanian folk art.

Vincas Svirskis – žymiausias savamokslis Vidurio Lietuvos dievdirbys ir kryždirbys. 2015 m. buvo minimos šio garsaus lietuvių liaudies skulptoriaus 180-osios gimimo metinės, 2016-aisiais – mirties šimtmečio sukaktis. 1966 m pasirodė pirmoji išsami kultūros tyrinėtojos Irenos Kostkevičiūtės studija apie kryždirbio gyvenimą ir kūrybą – „Vincas Svirskas“. Knygoje autorė atskleidė liaudies kūrėjo asmenybę, aptarė originalią paminklų, sodybose, pakelėse, kapinėse stovinčių kryžių meninę formą, perteikė išsamų kūrybos vaizdą, publikavo liaudies meistro kūrinių nuotraukas ir paskelbė žemėlapį, kuriame pažymėtos 63 žinomų jo kurtų paminklų stovėjimo vietos. Daugiausia jų pastatyta Kėdainių ir Panevėžio apylinkėse, abipus Nevėžio esančiuose kaimuose, taip pat Kauno, Raseinių, Radviliškio apylinkėse. Tačiau kai kurie kūriniai tuo metu buvo nežinomi. Straipsnyje nagrinėjami neseniai atrasti V. Svirskio darbai, saugomi Panevėžio, Kėdainių apylinkių bažnyčiose. Teigiama, kad jis užsiėmė ne vien kryždirbyste, bet drožė ir angelų, šventųjų skulptūras bei Nukryžiuotuosius bažnyčių altoriams bei interjerams, katafalkų ir procesijų kryžius. Šių darbų meninė raiška atspindi meistro skulptūriniams kryžiams, koplytstulpiams būdingus bruožus, savitą, individualų ir nepakartojamą meninį stilių. Bažnyčioms sukurtos V. Svirskio skulptūros, į kurias jo tyrinėtojai neatkreipė dėmesio ir kurios iki šiol buvo neskelbtos ir nežinomos, leidžia geriau pažinti liaudies menininko kūrybinį palikimą, naujai įvertinti jo darbų paplitimą, patikslinti kūrybinę biografiją. Vincas Svirskis is the most prominent self-taught god-carver and crosscrafter of Lithuania. In 2015 the 180th birth anniversary of the famous Lithuanian folk sculptor was commemorated and 2016 marked 100 years after his death. The first comprehensive monograph about the cross-crafter’s life and work appeared in 1966 by cultural researcher Irena Kostkevičiūtė who published the study “Vincas Svirskis”. The author revealed the folks artist’s personality, discussed artistic form of artworks standing in farmsteads, on roadsides, in cemeteries, gave detailed analysis of Svirskis’ artworks with photos of the folk master’s works, and published a map of his best-known monuments. Most of them were built in the surrounding areas of Kėdainiai and Panevėžys, also in surrounding areas of Kaunas, Raseiniai and Radviliškis. However, some artworks were not known at the time. These recently discovered artworks of Svirskis, preserved in Panevėžys and Kėdainiai district churches, were studied by the author of this article. She claims that, in addition to cross-crafting, Svirskis also carved angels, saints, crucifixions for altars of churches and their interiors, as well as crosses for hearses and processions. Artistic expression of these artworks reflects characteristic features of sculptor’s masterpieces, individual and unique artistic styles. There are no researches on Svirskis’ church sculptures. Analysing them allows getting a better understanding of creative heritage of the folk artist, as well as re-evaluating spread of his artworks and revising his biography.

Straipsnio objektas - Mažajai Lietuvai būdingi vietinės kryždirbystės kūriniai - kapinėse statyti metaliniai kaltiniai kryžiai ir atskiroms teritorijoms būdingos jų formos XIX a. pab.-XX a. pr. Tikslas - išanalizuoti regiono dirbiniams būdingą įvairovę, tą lėmusius antkapinių kaltinių kryžių lokalinius skirtingumus, jų ryšius su svarbesniais regiono kryždirbystės centrais.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas profesoriaus Vacio Miliaus fotografinis palikimas, kuriame užfiksuotas kryždirbystė spaveldas. Į objektą žvelgiama kaip į dokumentinį šaltinį, parodoma, kokia informacija yra įvaizdinta fotografijose ir kokia užrašyta metrikose. Dauguma nuotraukų atspindi profesoriaus siekį užfiksuoti paminklą taip, kad matytųsi jis visas, jo detalės ir jį supanti aplinka, kuri tyrėjui suteikia papildomos informacijos. Fotografijose „įrašyta“ vaizdinė informacija ir metrikose pateikiami duomenys daro Miliaus fotografijas vertingu dokumentu kryždirbystės tyrimams. The article focuses on prof. Vacys Milius’ photographs capturing the heritage of cross crafting. The author of the article regards an object as a documentary source and shows what kind of information is inscribed in photographic images and recorded in their descriptions. The photographs by prof. Milius have a documentary character. The majority of photographs reflect the professors aim to capture a monument with all its details, as well as its surroundings that provide additional information. That is why he often took more than one shot of the same monument. This kind of presentation is the most informative: it clearly shows the monument itself, its form and surroundings, as well as separate details (e.g., sculpture, inscriptions and symbols). When capturing objects of cross crafting, Milius did not aim to create photographic art - he regarded photography above all as a means to document the existing heritage and create the visual memory of a certain cultural phenomenon. He did not seek to make the monuments look more beautiful and was interested not only in magnificent examples. He not only captured decaying and abandoned early monuments, but also documented the efforts to preserve them and the continuing cross-crafting tradition - newly built monuments. The visual information on the cross-crafting tradition (continuing construction of memorial monuments; restoration of early monuments; artistic expression; material condition) contained in Milius’s photographs is supplemented by the meticulously collected data on the intentions of erecting a monument, its authors, commissioners, rituals and customs presented in the photograph descriptions. This visual information and the information in the descriptions increase the scientific value of the photographs and make the photographs by Milius a valuable document for the research on cross crafting.

Straipsnyje, pasitelkiant sovietmečiu publikuotus straipsnius, fotografijas, sukauptą rankraštinę medžiagą, kurioje aprašomi ir fiksuojami Kupiškio krašto sakraliniai mažosios architektūros paminklai, apibūdinamos senosios kryždirbystės tradicijos ypatybės Kupiškio krašte. Nagrinėjama, kokie tyrimai buvo atliekami sovietmečiu, kokia medžiaga buvo publikuojama ir kaupiama ir ką ji pasakoja apie senąją tradiciją bei jos likimą sovietmečiu. Kai kuriems faktams patikslinti pasitelkiami tarpukariu sukaupti duomenys ir fotografijos. Sovietmečiu kryždirbystės tyrimai daugiausia buvo kraštotyrinio pobūdžio: apsiribota meistrų biografijų aprašymu, kai kurių jų sukurtų darbų apibūdinimu. Ne visa sukaupta kraštotyrinė medžiaga buvo paskelbta, didesnioji jos dalis nugulė archyvuose. Tačiau ši sovietmečiu sukaupta medžiaga yra vertinga moksliniu požiūriu. Ja remdamiesi šiandien galime tyrinėti senąją kryždirbystės tradiciją, jos likimą sovietmečiu. Nuotraukose užfiksuoti įvairių tipų paminklai, išlikę iš XX a. pirmosios pusės, kai kurie gal siekia ir XIX a. pabaigą. Sovietmečiu buvo nustatyta nemažai sakralinius paminklus kūrusių meistrų pavardžių, taip pat įvardytos jų dirbtos skulptūros. Todėl ši mokslininkų, muziejininkų, kraštotyrininkų sukaupta medžiaga šiandien yra vertingas vaizdinis ir rašytinis (dažnai vienintelis) šaltinis tiriant senuosius kryždirbystės paminklus. Kupiškio krašto kryždirbystės tyrimams ypač nusipelnė kraštotyrininkas, muziejininkas Juozas Petrulis. Jo surinktos medžiagos (publikuotos ir rankraštinės bei ikonografinės) dėka šiandien žinome ne vieno Kupiškio krašte dirbusio dievdirbio ir kryždirbio pavardę. Jis pirmasis atskleidė žymesnių Kupiškio krašto meistrų (K. Adomavičiaus, Anundžio, Kantičkiaus, Simono, J. ir J. Čepėnų, J. Dagio, V. Žekonio) vardus ir užrašė bei publikavo platesnes jų biografijas, taip pat atskleidė ir daugelio kitų, ne tokių žymių meistrų vardus. Žvelgiant į sovietmečiu sukauptą ikonografinę medžiagą matyti, kad šiame krašte seniausi paminklai, statyti XIX a. viduryje ir iki XX a. pradžios, buvo aukšti – vienaukščiai ar dviaukščiai – stogastulpiai. Nuo XIX a. antrosios pusės juos ima išstumti puošnūs kryžiai su altorėlio pavidalo koplytėle kryžmoje. Pastarieji kryžiai įsitvirtina XIX a. pabaigoje–XX a. pradžioje ir yra siejami su kryždirbių Jono Dagio ir Juozapo Čepėno (vyr.) vardais. Nuo XX a. pradžios iki vidurio paplinta daug saikingiau puošti kryžiaus su altorėlio pavidalo koplytėle tipo kryžiai, kurie yra siejami su kryždirbio Juozapo Čepėno (jaun.) vardu. XX a. pirmojoje pusėje imami statyti kitokio tipo (be koplytėlės-altorėlio kryžmos centre), saikingo dekoro kryžiai – su ažūriniais ar profiliuotais skydeliais apatiniuose tarpkryžmiuose ar su nedideliais spinduliais, juosiančiais kryžmą. XX a. pradžioje paplito masyvių koplytstulpių su atvira iš visų pusių koplytėle ir joje komponuojama viena kokio nors siužeto skulptūra (dažniausiai Jėzaus krikšto ar šv. Jono Nepomuko skulptūra) tradicija. Būta ir koplytėlių medžiuose. Sovietmečiu publikuota ir sukaupta medžiaga liudija, kad Kupiškio krašto kryždirbystė atspindi būdingiausius Rytų Aukštaitijos regiono kryždirbystės bruožus. Rytų Aukštaitijoje paplitę monumentalūs, turtingai dekoruoti kryžiai su kryžmoje įkomponuota altoriaus pavidalo koplytėle, dekoruoti dviaukščiai ir vienaukščiai stogastulpiai, masyvūs koplytstulpiai su atvira koplytėle buvo būdingi ir šiam regionui priklausančiam Kupiškio kraštui. Sovietmečiu fotografuoti paminklai rodo jų nepavydėtiną dalią. Ypač nukentėjo puošniausi, kartu ir seniausi paminklai. Tai lėmė ne tik natūralios sąlygos, bet ir nepalanki sovietmečio atmosfera religiniams paminklams. Nenuostabu, kad dauguma jų neišliko, tačiau to meto kultūros darbuotojams pavyko išsaugoti bent jau paminklų dalis – skulptūras ir geležines viršūnes, kurie dabar saugomi ne viename Lietuvos muziejuje. Based on papers published in Soviet time, photos and accumulated manuscript materials describing and fixing small architecture sacral monuments in Kupiškis area, the paper defines peculiarities of olden cross-making traditions in the area. The analysis distinguishes which investigations had been done, the material published and accumulated in Soviet time, as well as what it tells us about the olden tradition and its fate in Soviet time. To check some facts, the data collected before the WWII and photographs have been used as well. The Soviet investigations on cross-making were mainly of a local lore/history type and presenting mainly descriptions of craftsmen biographies and definition of some works done by them. Not all local history materials had been published, and their major part rested in archives. Nevertheless, the material accumulated in the Soviet period is valuable from a scientific point of view. Today, relying upon it, we can study the olden tradition of cross-making and its fate in Soviet time. The photographed pictures show various fixed monuments, which survived from the first half of the 20th c., or some of them reached even the end of the 19th c. Quite a few names of masters who created the sacral monuments had been determined at that time and the sculptures they produced had been named. Therefore now this material accumulated by scholars, museum officials and local history researchers plays a role of valuable visual and written sources for those who investigate the olden cross-making monuments. A great contribution to cross-making investigations in Kupiškis area had been made by Juozas Petrulis, a local historian and museologist. Due to the material (published and written or iconographic) collected by him we know now many names of god-carvers and crossmakers who worked in Kupiškis area. He was the first author who revealed the names of prominent craftsmen (K. Adomavičius, Anundžis, Kantičkius, Simonas, J. and J. Čepėnai, J. Dagys, V. Žekonis) as well as fixed and published their exhaustive biographies, and uncovered some more names of less prominent masters. Looking at the iconographic material accumulated during the Soviet period, one can see that the oldest monuments built in mid-19th c. and early-20th c. were high (single-storey, or double-storey) roofpoles. From the second half of the 19th c. they begin to be replaced by decorated crosses with a little chapel of an altar shape at the centre. These crosses prevail at the end-19th c. and early-20th c. and are related to the names of cross craftsmen Jonas Dagys and Juozapas Čepėnas (Sr.). From early- to mid.- 20th c., the modestly decorated crosses with altar-shaped chapel pervaded and were related to the name of cross maker Juozapas Čepėnas (Jr.). At the first half of the 19th c., less decorated crosses (without an altar-shaped chapel) started to be made with tracery or profiled plates on the lower part of the bar between the intersections or with small rays around the intersection. At the beginning of the 20th c., the tradition of the massive chapel-poles, where chapel is open from all sides, spread with a certain subject sculpture (most often, a scene of Baptism of Jesus or a sculpture of St. John of Nepomuk) added. Some chapels used to be erected on the trees. The material published and accumulated in Soviet times shows that cross crafting in the area of Kuppiškis reflects features most typical for the East Aukštaitija region. The monumental, richly decorated crosses with an altar-shaped chapel at the intersection, decorated double-storey or singlestorey roof-poles, massive chapel-poles with open chapel were also characteristic of the Kupiškis area belonging to this region. The monuments shot in the Soviet period show their unenviable fate. The most decorated and the oldest monuments had suffered most. This was due not only to natural conditions, but also to unfavourable Soviet atmosphere towards the religion monuments. No wonder that majority of them hadn't survived, but the culture workers managed to save at least the parts of these monuments – sculptures and iron tops which one can see in some museums.

Nuo seno Lietuvoje buvo statomi vietinių meistrų sukurti kryžiai, koplytstulpiai ir koplytėlės. Juos užsakydavo svarbiems bendruomenės ar šeimos įvykiams atminti, reikšmingoms istorinėms vietoms bei datoms pažymėti. Kunigas Adomas Jakštas (1860-1938) savo straipsnyje rašė: „Nežinome, ar yr kur ant svieto tiek kryžių, kaip Lietuvoje. Eini keliu - kas viorstas, kas antras - kryžius! Važiuoji par kaimą - beveik kiekviename kieme regi kryžių! Atėjai ant kryžkelio - ir čia stovi kryžius!“. Mediniai mažosios architektūros kūriniai buvo puošiami stilizuotais augaliniais, geometriniais ornamentais. Panašios ornamentų kompozicijos randamos ir pastatų, langų bei prieangių pagražinimuose, buities rakandų papuošimuose, bet medinių paminklų dekoratyvinės formos kur kas turtingesnės, jų meninė išraiška gerokai subtilesnė. Koplytstulpio konstrukciją sudaro aukštas stiebas, kurio viršuje įrengiamos koplytėlės, atviros iš vienos arba iš visų keturių pusių. Vienos jų paprastesnių formų, kitos turi savitai interpretuotų architektūros stilių (dažnai baroko ar klasicizmo) bruožų. Atvirose bei įstiklintose koplytėlėse buvo talpinamos skulptūrėlės, dažniau - po kelias, rečiau - po vieną. Kartais ant koplytstulpio stiebo buvo tvirtinama viena didesnė polichromuota skulptūra, virš jos ant atramų pritvirtinamas skardinis arba skarda apkaltas lentinis stogelis. Ir pats koplytstulpis, ir skulptūrėlės buvo polichromuojami. There is a small number of small architecture exhibits in the museums’ collections. Not every museum has special premises for a higher cross or a crucifix. Restoring them is also not an easy task: it requires larger premises with accessible entries without barriers. Carvings are usually very ramshackle, sometimes even their former structure is no longer possible to restore; fragments are lacking, particularly of openwork. Local intellectuals or conservationists usually hand over these art works to the museums. In 2003, Pasvalys Museum got several art works, the remains of crucifixes and crosses. Exhibit the chapel with the Baptism of Jesus scene of Kupiškis Ethnographic Museum was standing on a higher wooden pole, but unfortunately remained only chapel with a sculptural composition ‘John the Baptist and Christ’. Sculptures are damaged, wood severely affected by atmospheric factors. Polychrome was gone. Fragment of V. Svirskis cross (granted for the Lithuanian Art Museum) with double sided sculpture was in by Rukai Lake in 2009. St. Joseph with the Child is carved on one side and St. John Nepomuk on the other. The carving was rotten, crevices were stocked with dirt. The resulting deep cracks had been filled by the cement trying to repair the cross. Surviving polychrome traces could be seen in the depths of folds. Several crosses with chapels are stored in Alytus Museum. One of them with two chapels and sculptures was standing in Vaisodys village (Alytus District) in the 19th c. In 2004, it was found in the state of emergency and immediately handed over for preservation to Alytus Musuem. The other cross stored in Alytus Museum was built in the first part of the 20th c. in Alytus. Authors of both crosses are unknown. Many artworks of craftsman Antanas Sorakas are stored in Lazdijai Museum. Most of them are small, however they have crucifix with crucifixion sculptural group which was found in Kučiūnai village (Lazdijai District Municipality). During the restoration of crosses, crucifixes and chapels some parts were dismantled. Wood was scraped off, consolidated, remains of paint also consolidated. Chapels were mounted using wooden stopples, stands were made. Even wood was properly consolidated because the material cannot survive under outdoor conditions. Restored wood requires a special microclimate, it is appropriate to keep the restored carvings in the museum’s repositories and exhibition halls.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas dar mažai tyrinėtas kryždirbystės laikotarpis, kurio pradžia laikytini 1928-ieji - pirmojo Lietuvos nepriklausomybės dešimtmečio jubiliejaus metai. Tais metais pradėta puošnių medinių jubiliejinių kryžių propagavimo ir statymo akcija. Jos iniciatorius buvo Vytauto Didžiojo karo muziejaus direktorius generolas Vladas Nagevičius, 1928 m. pradžioje tapęs ir vyriausiojo komiteto Lietuvos Nepriklausomybės dešimtmečio sukakčiai paminėti ir įamžinti pirmininku. Tai progai pastatyti puošnūs kryžiai ir kitų tipų paminklai turėjo tapti valstybės nepriklausomybės paminklais ir lietuvių nacionalinio tapatumo ženklais. The article analyses a scarcely researched cross-crafting period, the beginning of which is associated with 1928, i.e. the 10th anniversary of the independence of Lithuania. That year, upon the initiative of director of the Vytautas the Great War Museum Gen. Vladas Nagevicius the campaign to promote and erect anniversary wooden crosses was launched. Encouraged by the initiative, together with his pupils artist Adomas Varnas prepared the projects of the crosses to mark the occasion and submitted them to the War Museum. The museum made replicas of the crosses and distributed them throughout Lithuania. Eight of the projects were intended for the region of Samogitia, i.e. 4 crosses, 3 pillared shrinesandl pillar-type cross. Such distribution according to the monument type corresponded to the distribution of traditional monuments in Samogitia as mostly crosses, pillared shrines and shrines were being erected there with only very few piliar-type crosses. The article focuses only on the crosses erected under the projects in the region of Samogitia. Adomas Varnas prepared the project of three double-crosses and one Latin cross for Samogitia. During the interwar period, the majority of crosses of the region of Samogitia were erected based on the project intended for the Taurage district (No,12). It was a cross with two crossbars and a shrine at the lower crossbar decorated with floral, tulip-shaped rays and the motifs of the Instruments of the Passion on the vertical arm. This was the most popular project. The crosses made according to this project were erected not only in Samogitia (the districts of Kretinga, Raseiniai, Silale, Silute and Taurage) but also in Dzukija (the Varena district). The other two double-cross projects prepared for Samogitia were intended for the Raseiniai district (No.17 and No.32). Like the above-described cross, these two crosses were also richly decorated with the aureoles of floral-patterned rays. Samogitians preferred the cross with the arm-tips embellished with little crosses. The crosses in the districts of Raseiniai and Jurbarkas were erected according to the latter project. The most renowned of them have been restored and can be found in Betygala and Siluva. Unfortunately, the crosses erected under one more project intended forthe Raseiniai district (No.32) have not been detected. The Latin cross project was dedicated to the Kretinga region (No.20). It was a cross with a four-niche shrine on its vertical arm, under the crossbar. The vertical arm and cross-arm edges were adorned with tulip motif carvings, the intersection of the cross was decorated with the aureole of small tulip motif rays and the armtips were embellished with large eight-ray rosettes. Although, such crosses were recorded in the Kretinga region at the beginning of the 20th century, the project never gained popularity in Samogitia. The crosses under the project were erected in other regions such as Aukstaitija (the Birzai district) and Suvalkija (the Vilkaviskis district). Moreover, Varnas prepared the project of a double pillar-type cross for Samogitia (No.22). Pillar-type crosses of similar construction were rather frequent in Samogitia, thus the artist basically reiterated the prototype in his project adding carved boards to the edges of a six-slope roof as well as floral motifs - a recurrent element in his works - to the pillar. The pillar-type cross project was very popular and various more or less accurate variants based on it were erected throughout Lithuania. Three pillared shrine projects were also dedicated to Samogitia. Two of them were intended for the Mazeikiai district (No. 15 and No.34) and the third one-for the Telsiai district (No.24). However, the monuments implemented under the projects have never been recorded. Most of the monuments under these projects were erected to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the independence of Lithuania in 1928. However, the crosses based on the projects were being erected not only 1928 but also later on to mark various significant historical events, organisation anniversaries or in memory of certain persons. The crosses, piliar-type crosses and pillared shrines designed in 1928 have entrenched the image of a traditional Lithuanian richly decorated monument. Even though the projects were intended for specific districts, cross builders did not always pay attention to that. As the result, the crosses dedicated to Samogitia also spread to other regions. The latter phenomenon encouraged the mixing process of the regional characteristics of monuments. On the other hand, this cross promoting campaign urged people to nurture the already dying cross-crafting tradition.

XVI-XVIII a. LDK statytieji kryžiai yra katalikiškajam pasauliui būdingas reiškinys. Galima teigti, kad jau XVI a. visoje Lietuvos teritorijoje sutinkami pakelių kryžiai, kurie buvo svarbūs vietos topografijai, objekto padėčiai nusakyti. XVI a. daugiausia kryžių paminėta kaip žemės valdų riboženkliai. XVI–XVIII a. riba tarp kryžių-riboženklių miesteliuose ir pakelės kryžių yra labai trapi, todėl griežtas šių kryžių funkcijų atskyrimas ir tipologizacija negalimi, išskyrus tada, kai kalbama apie kapčių ribų žymėjimą. Plačių XVI a. bažnyčių aprašymų neišlikę (arba dar nerasta), todėl apie tuo metu statytus ar nestatytus parapijų klebonų veiklos sričiai priklaususius kapinių ar šventorių kryžius galutinių išvadų negalime daryti. XVII a. I pusėje kryžių plitimas LDK kraštovaizdyje susijęs su potridentinės Bažnyčios mokymu. Tuo laikotarpiu pradėta plačiai statyti šventorių, kapinių, pakelių, atminimo ir kitus kryžius. XVII a. II pusėje kryžius tampa įprastine gyvenamosios vietos ar kelionės dalimi. Šiuo metu jau galima kalbėti apie pamaldumo išganytojiškai Kristaus kančiai įsišaknijimą. XVI-XVIII a. gana plačiai LDK statyti kapinių, bažnyčių šventorių, pakelės, sodybų, atminimo, maro, misijų kryžiai. Negausūs schematiški kryžių pažymėjimai žemės valdų planuose ir platesni kryžių aprašymai leidžia teigti, kad XVIII a. egzistavo jau įvairių formų religiniai paminklai – stogastulpiai, koplytstulpiai, stulpai su šventųjų atvaizdais, nedidelės koplytėlės medžiuose ir pan., tačiau apie konkretų religinių paminklų tipų paplitimą ir pasiskirstymą duomenų neturime. XVIII a. LDK statomi kryžiai su Nukryžiuotojo skulptūromis ir su prie jų pritvirtintomis koplytėlėmis su kitų šventųjų asmenų figūromis. XVIII a. LDK aprašymai byloja apie išplitusį paprotį koplytėles statyti ant žemės. 1732 m. Aubrey de la Motraye publikuotas žemaitiškų kryžių aprašymas leidžia daryti išvadas apie giliai įsišaknijusį liaudišką pamaldumą. Remiantis XIX a. analogijomis, prancūzo minimas mažas koplytėles ir šventųjų skulptūras galime priskirti religinei liaudies skulptūrai, apie kurios egzistavimą patikimesnių ir išsamesnių šaltinių neturime. The phenomenon of building crosses in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th–18th centuries was characteristic of the entire Catholic world. One can assert that already in the 16th century, crosses were built at waysides and homesteads in the entire territory of Lithuania. They were important landmarks of local topography and were used to mark the land boundaries. In the 16th century, the majority of crosses were mentioned as the landmarks of domains. In the 16th–17th centuries, the boundary between crosses as landmarks in towns and crosses at waysides was very delicate. Therefore, strict differentiation of functions and typology of crosses is not possible, except where crosses were build on piles of ground as landmarks in fields. Detailed descriptions of churches of the 16th century have not survived (or have not been found yet). Therefore, final conclusions cannot be drawn about erection or not erection of crosses in the cemeteries and churchyards which belong exclusively to the activity field of the parson of the parish church. In the first half of the 17th century, the spread of crosses in the landscape of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was related with the teaching of the Post-Trent Church. In that period, crosses began to be erected in large numbers at churchyards, cemeteries, homesteads, waysides as tokens of memory and on other occasions. In the second half of the 17th century, a cross became a customary attribute in a place of residence or on a trip. Today, we can already speak about the piety to the redemptive suffering of Christ that was established in the religious consciousness of all believers (Catholics). Like in the entire Catholic world, in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania crosses at cemeteries, homesteads, and waysides as well as commemorative, plague, and mission crosses began to be erected in the 16th–18th centuries. Sparse schematic markings of crosses on the maps of land domains and more extensive descriptions allow us to state that sacral monuments of different forms existed already in the 17th–18th century. Roofed pillar-type crosses (stogastulpiai), roofed crosses, shrines on the pillars, columns with statues of saints, and small wayside shrines (koplytėlės) in trees, etc. were built, but there are no data about the spread and distribution of concrete types of religious monuments. In the 18th century, crosses with sculptures of the Crucified with attached shrines containing figures of other holy persons were built in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. According to the 18th century descriptions from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, there was a widespread custom to build wayside shrines on the ground. A description of Samogitian crosses published by Aubrey de la Motraye in 1732 allows us to draw a conclusion about a deep-rooted folk piety. According to analogies of the 19th century, small wayside shrines and statues of saints mentioned by this Frenchman could be attributed to the sacral folk sculpture, about the existence of which we do not have any more reliable and comprehensive sources.

Kryždirbystės tradicijai sovietmetis buvo ypač sunkus laikotarpis. Nuo pirmųjų pokario metų sakraliniai mažosios architektūros paminklai imti sąmoningai naikinti. Sovietų valdžiai dažniausiai užkliūdavo miestelių aikštėse, pakelėse ir ypač nuo seno šventomis laikytose vietose stovintys kryžiai bei kiti sakraliniai paminklai. Vis dėlto, nepaisant draudimų, naikinimo, represijų, paminklai tai vienur, tai kitur iškildavo ir per sovietmetį. Ypač atkakliai žmonės atstatydavo kryžius šventose vietose po masinio naikinimo vajų, pavyzdžiui, Kryžių kalne. Kol kas šis laikotarpis tik pradedamas išsamiau tyrinėti. Iki šiol daugiausia rašyta apie kryždirbystės paminklų naikinimą sovietmečiu. Paskutiniaisiais sovietmečio metais, Atgimimo laikotarpiu (1988-1990 m.) pastatyti sakralinio turinio paminklai jau yra aptarti keliose publikacijose. Paminėtini Gražinos Marijos Martinaitienės straipsniai, aptariantys sovietmečiu sukurtus kryždirbių Antano Sorakos (1886-1951) ir Petro Tamašausko (1893-1983) kūrinius, bei Vitalijos Vasiliauskaitės publikacija apie meistrą Kazimierą Nemanį (1923-2002), kurio didžiąją kūrybos dali sudaro sovietmečiu sukurti memorialiniai paminklai. Šio straipsnio autorė yra nagrinėjusi kryždirbystės tradicijos palaikymo būdus sovietmečiu, jų menines ypatybes. Ablingos ansamblio įtaką tradicinių memorialinių paminklų kūrybai aptarė Alė Počiulpaitė ir G. M. Martinaitienė. Šiame straipsnyje aptariami kryždirbystės paminklų statymo motyvai sovietmečiu (iki Atgimimo laikotarpio - 1988 m.) ir atskleidžiamos meninės raiškos ypatybes, būdingas to meto kryždirbystės objektams. The article deals with the development of the cross-crafting tradition during the Soviet Era. The first part of the article reveals the reasons for erecting monuments and pinpoints the ways that helped maintain this tradition during the Soviet Era. Monuments marked the spots where victims died; they were erected to get God's comfort in the post-war period or were considered as the fulfilment of one's vows to God (asking for health). It was a tradition to erect a new monument in the place of the deteriorated one. Usually, churchyards were decorated with crosses to commemorate different historical events and personalities. Another factor that helped maintain the cross-crafting tradition during the Soviet Era was the relocation of old monuments from their former places to new buildings or other safe places, namely to cemeteries and churchyards, their restoration and renovation. The second part of the article analyses artistic means of expression used in cross-crafting artworks. In the post-war period artistic means of expression were considerably impacted by the tradition - the ornamentation and design of monuments of a specific region or location were characteristic to that particular location. In due course, crosses were built rather than monuments erected. The ornamentation of crosses became much the same and decorative elements of a particular region or location were rarely used, whereas multiple rays at the cross-piece were prevalent. During the Soviet Era these crosses "suns" were set up all over the country. Sometime later, the erected monuments resembled the shapes and the ornamentation of traditional monuments. Under the influence of the Ablinga Memorial, pole-type sculptures and the imitations of various pillar-type crosses and pillared shrines emerged, which are relatively popular until the present time. Highly decorated crosses made during the Soviet Era reveal the fact that the tradition of exceedingly decorated crosses of the mid-war period, which was considered as the manifestation of patriotism, was revived and maintained. Therefore, a highly decorated monument, which resembled the monument of the mid-war period, was the embodiment of patriotism and occasionally statehood. Furthermore, patriotic motifs were expressed by sacral sym bols and the symbols of statehood. On the other hand, sacral monu ents erected during the Soviet Era marked the resistance to the anti-religious policies, which also had a patriotic character - they were erected to commemorate the aspiration of Lithuanian people to become independent.

Straipsnyje tiriami sovietmečiu sukurti kryždirbystės paminklai: kryžiai, stogastulpiai, koplytstulpiai. Aptariamos šių paminklų formos, puošybos bruožai, skulptūros siužetai. Analizuojama tradicinių paminklų dekoro įtaka, taip pat naujos tendencijos kryždirbystės tradicijoje. Atskleidžiama, kad per tam tikrus simbolinius elementus ir puošybą buvo reiškiamos ne tik religinės, bet ir patriotinės aspiracijos. In the present article, monuments of cross crafting created in the Soviet period – crosses, roofed pillar-type crosses (stogastulpiai), and wayside shrines (koplytstulpiai) are discussed. The author of the article aims to reveal the prevailing features of artistic expression of cross-crafting objects of that time. For that purpose, the most common types of monuments and the main directions of their artistic expression are distinguished, and the elements of décor as well as the symbols that were dominant in memorial monuments of that period are analysed in greater detail. In the Soviet period, memorial monuments were traditionally built in different locations, but in the course of time they were less frequently erected at homesteads and waysides and became concentrated in churchyards and cemeteries. In the post-war period, the influence of traditions was stronger – monuments characteristic of the regions of the country were built, and decorative or construction details typical of a certain location or region were used. Later the number of crosses grew, and the amount of monuments of other types decreased. The décor of crosses became more uniform, details typical of certain regions or locations were used less often, and a sunburst surrounding the crosspiece became dominant. In the Soviet period, such “sunburst” crosses were built all over Lithuania, even in those locations where they were not popular in the early 20th century, but were already erected in the interwar period, when the amalgamation of regional features began. Under the influence of the Ablinga memorial, pillar-type sculptures and various imitations of roofed pillar-type crosses and wayside shrines began to be created. The variety of plots of these sculptures is rather narrow. Images of Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the most popular saints appealing to the basic feelings of believers remain prevalent. The iconography of the monuments is expanded by secular plots, which often convey patriotic moods. Besides, patriotic moods were also expressed through various symbols (religious and related to statehood), decorative, in particular floral, motifs (oak leaves, rue twigs, tulips), and even colours. In addition, a sumptuous monument itself, which served as a model of a monument representing the Lithuanian spirit and which was promoted in the interwar period, conveyed patriotic moods and sometimes probably even the idea of statehood. On the other hand, in the conditions of the Soviet times, the production and erection of a sacral monument by itself was an act of resistance against the anti-religious policy, which sometimes had a patriotic undertone – the memory or goal of Lithuania’s independence.

This article relates the history of the monument known as Three Crosses , designed by Antoni Wiwiulski and built with the participation of the citizens of Vilnius in 1916 as a reinforced concrete construction. Occupying a dominant position in the city panorama, it was blown up in May 1950 by the Lithuanian communist authorities. When Lithuania regained its independence in 1989, the monument was reconstructed by the architect Henrikas Silgaris in collaboration with the sculptor Stanislovas Kuzma.

Lithuanians have a lot of options and necessity to express their national identity in various forms and ways. Various spiritual and material culture objects have become symbols of national identity. Folk artists created crosses that were built not only in churches, churchyards, cemeteries, but also in villages, towns, streets, in front of public buildings, roadsides, picturesque places on hills or near springs. The cross has gained polysemous importance in particularly difficult historical periods during occupation. The object of the research – crosses created by Lithuanian folk artists. The aim is to look in crosses created by folk artists as a definition of national identity symbol. Objectives: 1) to discuss the originality and exclusivity of Lithuanian crosses; 2) to reveal the cross as becoming the symbol of Lithuanian identity; 3) to reveal the importance of the cross as Lithuanian symbolic tool for resistance during the periods of occupation; 4) to discuss the value of the Hill of Crosses as religious and national symbol of consciousness. Straipsnyje, remiantis ikonografine bei archyvine medžiaga ir 2006 m. ekspedicijoje užfiksuotais išlikusiais senaisiais ir naujai pastatytais paminklais, aptariami mediniai senieji ir naujieji kryždirbystės paminklai Pašvitinio apylinkėse. Apibūdinamos kryždirbystės paminklų ypatybės, analizuojama jų meninė raiška, nustatomi būdingiausi bruožai ir savitumai regiono ir visos Lietuvos kryždirbystės paminklų mastu. Pašvitinio valsčiuje, kaip ir visoje Lietuvoje, vieni populiariausių paminklų buvo mediniai kryžiai ir koplytstulpiai. XIX a. antrojoje pusėje statyti koplytstulpiai su atvira iš visų keturių pusių koplytėle, keturšlaičiu stogeliu ir išraiškinga metaline viršūne. Būdingas valsčiaus koplytstulpių bruožas – skulptūros koplytėlėje atitveriamos ažūrinėmis sienelėmis arba profiliuotų pakraščių skydeliais. Tokie koplytstulpiai buvo būdingi visam Šiaurės Lietuvos regionui (ypač Šiaulių apskrities Pakruojo ir Joniškio apylinkėse), jie buvo pasiekę ir Vidurio Lietuvą. XX a. pirmojoje pusėje buvo statomi kuklesni mediniai kryžiai, koplytstulpiai ir koplytėlės. Labiausiai paplitę buvo Šiaurės Lietuvos regionui būdingi kryžiai, kurių bene vienintelė puošmena – tai trilapio formos ar rutuliu užbaigti kryžmų galai ir kryžmoje pakabinta paprastų formų koplytėlė ar tik stogeliu pridengta Nukryžiuotojo figūrėlė. Savitumo šio valsčiaus XX a. pirmosios pusės kryždirbystei suteikia kryždirbio J. Remeikos vienakryžmiai ir dvikryžmiai kryžiai su nišele ar koplytėle stiebo apačioje. Valsčiuje vyravo bendros atvaizdų pasirinkimo tendencijos kaip ir visoje Lietuvoje – paminklams buvo pasirenkami geriausiai kaimo žmonių pasaulėvoką, interesus, siekius užtikrinantys atvaizdai, susiję su pagrindiniais katalikiškojo tikėjimo asmenimis (Jėzaus Kristaus ir Švč. Mergelės Marijos siužetai) bei svarbiausių žmogaus gyvenimo sričių – šeimos, ūkio, pasėlių, gyvulių – globėjais (šv. Juozapas, šv. Jurgis, šv. Jonas Nepomukas). Naujųjų paminklų kol kas statoma nedaug, tačiau stengiamasi išlaikyti Šiaurės Lietuvos tradicijas – pasirenkami šiam kraštui būdingi tradicinių formų paminklai – koplytstulpiai su atviromis koplytėlėmis ir kukliai puošti kryžiai. Based on the iconographic and archive material as well as old and newly built monuments fixed during the expedition in 2006, the paper discusses the wooden old and new cross-making monuments in the area of Pašvitinys. The peculiarities in cross-making monuments are defined, their art expression is analysed, most typical features and specifities in such monuments are determined on a regional scale and that of all Lithuania. Wooden crosses and chapel-poles are among the most popular monuments in the area of Pašvitinys, as is in the rest of Lithuania. The chapel poles erected in the second half of the 19th century are notable for a small chapel open from all sides with a four-slope roof and expressive metal top. A typical feature of the chapel-poles in the area studied is an enclosion of sculptures by openwork inner walls or trimmed edge plates. Such chapel poles are typical of entire North Lithuanian region (especially in the areas of Pakruojis and Joniškis of the Šiauliai County), and they had reached even Middle Lithuania. Wooden crosses, chapel poles and small chapels erected in the first half of the 20th century were more modest. The crosses typical of the North Lithuanian region were most widely spread; they have perhaps a single decoration, i.e., the ends of the crosspieces are of a trefoil or ball shape, and a simple small chapel is hanged at the crossing place or there is a small Crucifix covered by a small roof. Single bar crosses or two-barred ones made by Jonas Remeika with a small niche or a chapel at the base of the cross introduce certain specificity into the cross making in this area during the first half of the 20th century. General tendencies in choosing the images prevailed in Pašvitinys area, as in the rest of Lithuania.

This article by ethnographer A. Gasperaitis is dedicated to the famous craftsman, wooden cross-maker Antanas Deveikis (most likely born around 1842, died in 1932), from the region of Utena. His life and works are discussed. In the late 20th c., museum worker Balys Juodzevičius with the author of this article wrote down the recollections of people in the region of Utena - these memories help reconstruct the craftsman’s personality traits, lifestyle, and also discuss his works, the artistic features of the crosses that he created, the impact of his style on later generations of cross-makers. Art historian Dr. Laima Laučkaitė-Surgailienė has made a list of 50 pieces by A. Deveikis, of which 25 are crosses. The author of this article, based on iconographic material, photographs and drawings from the early 20th c., as well as sacral monuments that still stand in the districts of Utena, Molėtai, identifies more Deveikis-style crosses, discusses the fate of many of them. He notes that such a feel for beauty was had by few people who had not completed any education. During the first decade Lithuania’s Independence, the most style of the most beautiful crosses by Deveikis was selected as the benchmark for Eastern Aukštaitija.

Klaipėdos krašto konfesinis paveldas pasižymi unikalia istorija. Tai antkapiniai paminklai senosiose evangelikų liuteronų kapinėse, datuojami XIX a. pabaigos – XX a. pirmos pusės laikotarpiu. Jie iš esmės skiriasi nuo katalikų kapinių tiek savo architektūra, tiek dekoru, tiek ir pačia laidosenos tradicijų ir kapinių priežiūros samprata. Visame Klaipėdos krašte nuo Nemirsetos iki Smalininkų priskaičiuojama apie 1 200 senųjų istorinių liuteronų kapinaičių. Kai kurie kaimai yra turėję ir ne vienerias, o dvejas, trejas, pavieniais atvejais – net ketverias kapinaites. Deja, didžioji dauguma ten statytų medinių ar metalinių kryžių, antkapių, paminklų yra visam laikui prarasti. Juos visą šimtmetį niokojo ne tik pamario vėtros, bet ir negailestingos piktavalių kapinių niokotojų rankos, ypač – sovietmečiu. Manoma, kad šiuo metu šiose kapinaitėse yra išlikęs ne daugiau kaip vienas kryžius iš statytų dešimties. Klaipėda region confessional heritage is known with its unique history. We find here historical Lutheran cemeteries with original burial monuments (crosses, tomb stones, stelae, etc.) from the end of the 19th C. – first part of the 20th C. They differ from Catholic confessional heritage with their architecture, decors, particular funeral traditions, and whole conception of real burial places and whole cemeteries keeping and visiting system. We know about 1.200 old historical Lutheran cemeteries in Klaipėda region, from Nemirseta up to Smalininkai surroundings. Some villages have had two, three, in some cases even four cemeteries around. Unfortunately, the most part of inherited here wooden or iron crosses, tomb stones, other monuments are lost for ever. They were destroyed by local winds, steady dampness for all the century, and by cruel and evil-minded hands of cemetery harriers, especially during Soviet times. We think just one cross from ten ones survived here at present. The results of complex field work expedition, provided in historical Lutheran cemeteries from Šilutė district Usėnai surroundings, particular on old iron crosses are reflected in the article. We have got information about 79 iron crosses and just fragmentary remains of 73 other iron crosses from 27 local cemeteries. A great number (56 in sum total) of Lithuanian, German or bilingual epitaphs in Gothic (period of 1862-1912 years) or Latin (period of 1861-1914 years) letters are found, documented and described in the article.

Lietuviai emigrantai lietuviškų medinių kryžių yra pastatę daugelyje pasaulio šalių. Ypač jų padaugėjo po Antrojo pasaulinio karo, kai didžiulė banga emigrantų paliko Lietuvą. Pokario pabėgėliai lietuviai lauko paminklus – kryžius, stogastulpius, koplytstulpius ėmė statyti jau Antrojo pasaulinio karo laikų perkeltųjų asmenų stovyklose. 1945–1952 m. laikotarpiu tradicinių lietuviškų kryžių buvo pastatyta Vokietijoje (Augsburge, Freiburge, Hanau ir kt.), Danijoje (Dragsbaeke). Vėliau, jau gyvendami įvairiose pasaulio šalyse, daugiausiai JAV, lietuviai ir toliau kūrė bei statė kryžius. Straipsnyje analizuojami išeivijoje JAV sukurti kryžiai, koplytstulpiai, stogastulpiai – lauko paminklai ir interjerui skirti dirbiniai. Aptariamas ir šių paminklų atvaizdų panaudojimas dekoruojant antkapinius paminklus, analizuojami kryždirbystės paminklų puošybos elementai, vyraujantys skulptūros siužetai, parodoma, kaip per kryžių dekorą lietuviai emigrantai siekė išreikšti tautinį identitetą. II pusėje antrosios emigrantų bangos, vadinamųjų dipukų, kurtus kryžius. Lithuanian emigrants have erected Lithuanian wooden crosses in many parts of the world. These crosses particularly increased in number after World War II, when a huge wave of emigrants left Lithuania. Lithuanian post-war refugees already began erecting outdoor monuments such as crosses, wooden memorials and wayside shrines at World War II displaced persons camps. From 1945 to 1952, traditional Lithuanian crosses were erected in Germany (Augsburg, Freiburg, Hanau, etc.) and Denmark (Dragsbæk). Later, while already living in various countries around the world (primarily in the United States), Lithuanians continued to craft and erect crosses. This article analyses crosses, wooden memorials and wayside shrines created by emigrant in the United States - outdoor monuments and pieces designed for interiors. It also discusses the use of images of these monuments in decorating tombstones, analyses elements of cross-crafting monument decor and prevailing sculptural themes, and shows how Lithuanian emigrants sought to express their national identity through cross decor. The article is based on material collected by the author in Chicago in 2012. Crosses, wooden memorials and wayside shrines were researched in their natural environment, while interior pieces were examined at a branch of the Lithuanian Research and Studies Center at the Lithuanian Museum and in the funds of the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, and additional material was collected in the Lithuanian Research and Studies Center archives (Art, World Lithuanian). Material from 1950-2011 emigrant publications was also used as a source. The collected material primarily reflects the crosses created by the second wave of emigrants – the so-called “DPs” – in the second half of the 20th century.

Leonardas Andriekus (1914-2003), atstovaudamas homo religiosus pakraipai, būdamas tikintis kūrėjas, savo poeziją orientuoja į sakraliosios erdvės sklaidą. Jo poezijoje ryškiai atsiskleidžia sakraliųjų vandens telkinių pavidalai; vietovės, susijusios su kryžiaus bei kita simbolika; kalnai, kurie yra jungtis tarp žemės ir dangaus; sakralūs miestai savo religine patirtimi; visata kaip sakraliųjų erdvių užbaigimas. Literatūros tyrinėtojo Dainiaus Sobeckio straipsnyje analizuojama krikščioniškosios patirties sakraliųjų erdvių sklaida, atsiverianti Andriekaus poezijoje. Andriekus išleido dešimt poezijos knygų, iš kurių viena rinktinė – lietuvių kalba ir dvi – anglų kalba. Straipsnyje aptariami šeši rinkiniai lietuvių kalba, gerai atspindintys analizuojamą problemą. Leonardas Andriekus (1914-2003), while representing the direction of homo religiosus, as a believer in God, orients his poetry towards sacral spaces. In it, the shapes of sacral waters are emphatically revealed: locations connected with the cross and other kinds of symbolism; mountains, which are a connection between Heaven and Earth; sacral cities, with their religious experiences; and the Universe, which is the final point of sacral spaces. This article by the literature researcher Dainius Sobeckis analyses the dispersion of sacral spaces based on the Christian experience that is revealed in Andriekus’ poetry. He published ten books of poetry, of which one selection is in Lithuanian and two are in English. In the article, six collections in Lithuanian are analysed, which represent perfectly the question analysed.

Straipsnyje aptariami menkai Lietuvoje tyrinėti medžiuose įrėžti kryžiai, pateikiami pakabintų ant medžių kryželių ir koplytėlių pavyzdžiai, Lietuvos pavydžiai lyginami su kitų šalių atvejais. Daroma išvada, kad medžiuose įrėžti kryžiai, pakabinami kryželiai ir koplytėlės dažniausiai žymi žmogaus mirties vietą; kartu jie saugo mirusiųjų sielas, šventose vietose jie yra votai. Šiandien koplytėlių ir medinių kryželių kabinimo medžiuose tradicija išlaikė buvusius bruožus: mediniais kryželiais pažymimos partizanų žūties vietos, koplytėlės ir kryželiai būna prie palaidojimų kapinėse, šventose vietose jie kabinami kaip aukos; lygiai kaip ir kitose Europos šalyse, ženklina staigios mirties, rečiau – vaidenimosi vietas. Article discusses the subject under researched in Lithuania, namely, crosses engraved in the trees, as well as the cases of hanging the wooden crosses and chapels in the trees, the comparisons with other countries examples were presented. It is concluded that the crosses cut in the trees, the wooden crosses and chapels in trees often indicate the place of a person's death; alongside it carries out the function of the souls of the dead protection, while in the holy places they play the role of acknowledgements and the offering application. Today, chapels and the wooden crosses hanging in trees maintained the tradition of the former features: wooden crosses mark the death location of the local partisans, chapels and crosses marked burials in cemeteries, in holy places they are hung as offerings, in the former farmsteads they became signs of memory, and as in other European countries, they mark the places of sudden death, less often the places of haunting.

Straipsnyje aptariamos etinio pobūdžio dilemos, kylančios dėl atsitiktinai rastų ir aiškių atribucinių nuorodų nebeturinčių artefaktų iš Klaipėdos krašto nekropolių (paminklų ar jų dekoro dalių, epitafinių lentų, kryžių fragmentų ir t. t.). Jos susijusios su tokių radinių identifikavimu, paveldosauginio ir muziejinio statuso nustatymu (saugotini, eksponuotini ar beverčiai), galima panauda (kaip mokslinių bei technologinių tyrimų objektų ar memorialinių ženklų, restauravimo darbų žaliavų) ir jų likimu. Patirtis rodo, kad dalis šių artefaktų yra vertingas žinių apie XIX–XX a. vidurio meistrų naudotas medžiagas, dekoro detales, įgūdžius, technologinius ir koloristikos sprendimus šaltinis. Aiškių atribucinių požymių neturintys artefaktai gali būti panaudoti instrumentinei analizei: keramikos, metalo, dažų, glazūrų sudėčiai ir struktūrai nustatyti; tačiau visų pirma tokio artefakto likimą nulemia jį radusiojo (priglaudusiojo, demontavusiojo ir kt.) asmens moralinis apsisprendimas. Article focuses on ethical dilemmas caused by accidentally found artefacts from the necropolis of Klaipėda Region that no longer have clear attribute references. In the research into confessional heritage, ‘accidentally found necropoles artefacts’ are understood as all artefacts that may relate to the cemeteries, individual tombs, or cenotaphs (tombstones or their parts, epitaph tables, whole or broken crosses, parts of fences, etc) whose immediate location may be other than a cemetery, the circumstances of their removal from the location are not clear, and they frequently can not be related to a specific buried person. The examples in the text prove that the artefacts may become an object of research and a source of new facts about the confessional heritage of the region and its technological and artistic development. due to the said artefacts, we learn about the existence of one or another style of decorations, the symbols, and the custom-related, artistic, and technological traditions; about the links of the cemetery artefacts with seemingly unrelated areas of technologies, construction, and art, etc. occasionally the artefacts can be used as raw materials for restoration. Regretfully, due to a weak current system of monument protection, moral undecidedness of the majority of the public, and narrow utilitarian aims we are not able to properly assess and understand the value of such findings. Therefore, it is important for the findings to be assessed by specialists from different areas of science, art, and technology: historians, restorers, art scientists, archaeologists, heritage conservationists, materials scientists, etc. On the other hand, the artefacts remind of the uniqueness of the city and the region, their rich history, and, regretfully, frequently of its tragic periods and events: therefore, they should be accepted as memory signs of people of different nationalities and confessional groups who lived in the region, whereas the type and the physical state of the artefacts should be just a secondary attribute of their value. However, due to a poor state, such artefacts seldom find way to museums, while those accidentally found in construction sites are neglected, sometimes buried in the ground, or remain ‘unnoticed’. Still, the issue of cemetery artefacts that have no clear attribute references in Klaipėda and its Region remain topical to date and will be topical in the future, as it is caused by decadeslong destruction of cemeteries. Therefore, the accidentally found artefacts become, and will become, the sources of different moral dilemmas and decisions: what to do with them, especially if the fact of their existence will extend the duration of a project of the territory development, etc. we argue that the findings and the circumstances of their discovery should be registered and processed, and at least minimal accounting should be systematized and possibly institutionalized at least at the level of the city municipality or elderships. The article appeals to the institutions of Klaipėda Region that have any political-administrative or economic levers and should feel the responsibility for the collection, registration, and storage of the above-named signs of regional identity and for their use in a broad sense.[...]

The semantic field of this image, the history of Jesus Christ, Christian consciousness, and Franciscan topography of road - all that is important while analyzing the motives of the inn or other similar place in the Lithuanian literature. The method of the present article is the analysis of theopoetics. The cycle "Užeigoje prie Vilniaus vieškelio" by Kazys Bradūnas is also the starting point in discussing these texts: "Vidudienis kaimo smuklėje" by Antanas Vaičiulaitis, "Kalėdų vaizdelis" by Antanas Škėma, "Vyno stebuklas" by Kornelijus Platelis, "Rue de Saine" by Jonas Mekas, the poem "Apie žmones ir obuolius" by Vladas Šlaitas, and "Blanchisserie, arba Žvėrynas - Užupis" by Jurgis Kunčinas. The journey of the lyrical subject in the cycle of poems by Bradūnas is characterized by strong dramatism of historical consciousness. Transformed events and actions allow this journey to be understood as the equivalent of the road of the Passion of Jesus Christ. Certain things also give a sense to an inn as a station of the road of the cross. Tavern is not an accidental place of the play by Škėma. The ambiguous mystery of the recognition of God, his miracles and death, the drama of human confession and suffering occur in this space of daily life and rest. The topography of evangelical miracle is also revealed in the poem by Platelis which gets closer to Škėma's work by the convention of faith and the ostensibility of the divine reality. Not only daily play and bohemian ease but also the atmosphere of metaphysical longing, unexpected associations of the Passion of Jesus Christ are characteristic to the action of Kunčinas' novel taking place in bars and cafés, on the way to them or from them. The voice of the bohemian daily life and the voice of metaphysics make this prosaist closer with the poetic telling of Mekas and Šlaitas. The meetings in cafés and wandering on the streets become an assumption for conversations about eternity and the metaphysical experience of nothing in the texts of these poets.

At the beginning of 19th century cross building was a deeply rooted practice in the Suwalki province. According to the surviving church documents, this tradition dates back to as far as the 18th century. The natural and sponteneous development of the tradition of cross building was interrupted in 1867, when a ban on building crosses, chapels or other religious symbols, Stations of the Crioss and processions church premises was imposed. Although panalties for disobeying the order were not heavy as in Kaunas and Vilnius provinces, the building, repair and renovation of crosses in the Suwalki province were under strict control of governement officials. Moreover the tsar‘s governement went as far as to regulate the outward apperance of the cross. No decorative elements, sophisticated forms or inscriptions were allowed. As a rule, building metal crosses made of cast iron was not permitted as the latter were said to resemble memorials. Besides, only wooden crosses were considered religious symbols by the civil government. Thus although the tsar‘s governement prevented industrial cast iron crosses from invading the landscape of Suwalki province, yet it also strongly infuenced the form, decoration and the intended purpose of wooden crosses. Numerous registered violations and penalties testify to people‘s disobedience and resistance to the civil governement in general and the control imposed on cross building in particular. Until then, the latter practice depended exclusively on the builder‘s religious feelings and the only requirement of the clergy was that the Christian iconography and Catholic norms be observed. The 19th century was the turning point in the tradition of cross building – the religious symbolism of the cross was overshadowed by its political implications. The emergence of historical and political references occurred not only as a result of the 1863 upsising and its subsequent cruel suppression, but also due to the above mentioned restrictions imposed by the tsarist governement, which were meant to control, enfeeble and eventually destroy the tradition in the Catholic regions of the Russian Empire. In Suwalki province, as in Vilnius or Kaunas provinces, crosses were built to commemorate the ancestors and important life events or by way of pleading for intercession and protection form from various diseases and ill-fortunes. The distinctive charecteristic of this province is that it is a place where the influences and trends of the other regions come together and undergo transformation. The Caravacan cross, with inscribed abbreviations, is found in Suwalki province more often than in other regions. The plain form and moderate ornamentation of the crosses of the Suvalkija region were determined not only by the specific requirements of the tsarist authorities, but also by people‘s distinctive taste, which was formed way before it could be affected by mass-produced items.

In 2011 due to the postdoctoral traineeship I had an opportunity to visit several European countries. I spent one month in the Austrian Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art in Vienna and one month in the Meertens Institute in Amsterdam (the Netherlands), moreover I spent a relatively shorter period of lime in the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology in Ljubljana and one week in the Prague National Library. These are my impressions of what I have experienced during the period of my traineeship. At present, I am involved in exploring the contemporary folk sculpture and cross-making traditions; therefore it was interesting for me to find out whether similar traditions are still alive in other European countries. The tradition of erecting memorial monuments with the images of saints on roadsides, in the squares of small and big towns and near houses has been alive in all Catholic countries in Europe since ancient times. Agriculture is a predominant feature of European countries, therefore people have particularly been concerned with the protection of the crop, livestock and property against different hardships and disasters, namely pests, natural disasters, etc. that were considered to be caused by the evil spirits. The main means of protection - prayers to God, the Virgin Mary and the saints; therefore in many Catholic countries crosses and chapels depicting the images of saints were built to the Glory of God for fulfilling people's requests and for the grace of God as well as a sign of gratitude (a sacrifice) for the fulfilled requests. Motives for building monuments were similar in different countries: they marked the final resting places, locations of wars and tragic events likewise other important events. Additionally, monuments were built to mark the boundary lines of the adjoining parcels of land or villages. People were building chapels or crosses near their houses and prayed for a better harvest, health, happiness, etc. Although the reasons for building monuments were similar everywhere in the world, the types, shapes and materials of monuments were slightly different. Lithuania is a distinctive country for building wooden memorial monuments; however a great number of wooden monuments have been built in Poland likewise. In the countries which I have visited, that is, Czech Republic, Austria and Slovenia as well as the Catholic areas of the Netherlands, brick and stone wayside shrines and chapels were built most frequently. The only exception concerns crosses, since they were made of wood, stone or cast metal. I was also concerned about the current situation regarding folk sculptures and the art of cross-making in Europe. The same as in Lithuania, in other countries one can seldom see ancient sculptures in an authentic environment. Monuments, especially those made of brick and stone and built at the beginning of the 19-20th centuries or even in earlier periods of time, have survived though most of them have remained without any decorations and just occasionally people decorated them with pictures or factory - made sculptures. Nowadays, in many countries ancient chapels and wayside shrines serve their primary function. This is apparent from the elements of ornamentation: they are arrangements of flowers and candles. Generally, wooden crosses are new; nevertheless they are built or reconstructed according to the ancient iconographic materials. Chapels and other monuments are supervised and renewed, whereas some monuments are reconstructed or even build anew; the images of saints are decorated with flowers and candles. For example, in Slovenia wooden crosses have been decorated with patterned towels until recently. Explorations in Europe have demonstrated that wood carvers lived and created works of art in many Catholic countries, moreover they set sculptures on crosses, wayside shrines and chapels. Earlier I used to think that my nation should boast itself for a diversity of stories for folk sculptures, though presently I have doubts about it. Other countries do not differ from us with respect to this particular matter. So, I sometimes ask myself "What is it that makes us uniquely different?" I should consider the diversity of shapes and ornamentation of our crosses as well as the shapes and decor of our chapels and wayside shrines. I should also stress the fact that we are distinguished for our persistent traditions. Many new crosses, wayside shrines and chapels are still being built in Lithuania, whereas in other countries they are merely reconstructed. We should be proud for we have a large number of wood carvers and sculptors who create not only traditional religious iconographic sculptures but also the works of art of different genres (mythological, historical, etc.). In the countries which I have visited, artists make sculptures but they are more like souvenirs. The viability of traditions is the basic factor indicating why the art of cross-making in Lithuania has been inscribed on the UNESCO list of masterpieces of intangible heritage for its protection.

Pagrindiniai šaltiniai - autorės Čikagoje (JAV) 2012 m. balandžio-gegužės mėnesiais surinkta lauko tyrimų, archyvinė, muziejinė medžiaga ir publikacijos išeivijos leidiniuose. Apžvelgiant kryžių dirbimo išeivijoje ištakas ir apibūdinant kryžių dirbimo priežastis bei būdingiausius kryždirbystės paminklų simbolinius elementus, vyraujančius skulptūros siužetus, atskleidžiama kryžių simbolinė prasmė lietuvių imigrantams. Straipsnio išvadose teigiama, kad pagrindinė išeivijos kryžių paskirtis yra lietuviškumo manifestacija, nors kryžiai išlaiko ir savo religines funkcijas. Article analyses crosses, wayside shrines and roof-poles (outdoor monuments and interior details). Its main source is the field investigation pursued by the author in Chicago in April-May 2012, as well as archival materials, museumpieces and publications in the emigrant press. The article aims at answering the question: what significance Lithuanianmade crosses (outdoor monuments and interior details) had in the emigrants' lives. Pursuing the above mentioned aim, the author reviews the origins of cross crafting in emigration, singles out the peculiar features of crosses put up in private and public space, reveals the symbolic significance of small crosses intended for the interior, reveals the dominant sculpture stories (themes) and decorative elements, as well as their symbolic meanings, in the objects of cross crafting and defines the importance of crosses (outdoor monuments and interior details) in attempts to sustain Lithuanian identity in emigration. The research revealed that crosses have little significance for the younger generation and for the emigrants of the third wave. Thus the investigation focused on the importance of crosses (outdoor monuments and interior details) in the lives of post-war emigrants (the so-called dipukai). Numbers of crosses in foreign countries skyrocketed after World War II, when a large wave of emigrants left their homeland. Lithuanians already started making crosses in displaced persons camps in Germany. The carvings fall into two groups, based on their purpose - outdoor monuments and items intended for the interior. Most of them echo the forms of crosses put up in Lithuania and are amply ornamented, thus emphasizing the carving's Lithuanian origin. Hence, already in the displaced persons camps, Lithuanian refugees made efforts to adapt in the foreign country by recreating their homeland and objects representing their home environment to help them retain links with Lithuania. Such items as small crosses intended for the interior and large outdoor carvings became the symbol of their abandoned Lithuanian homeland, their native villages and homesteads. Outdoor crosses were put up in private space, near the houses of Lithuanian immigrants, and in the public space, near churches, community houses, in youth camps, and cemeteries. The majority of crosses, wayside shrines and roof-poles erected in the public space were dedicated to Lithuanian partisans and martyrs of the Siberian exile, as well as suffering and suppressed Lithuanian people. Crosses put up near churches were related to church jubilees, Christianization of Lithuania and anniversaries of the country's independence. In addition, crosses represented an important aim pursued by Lithuanian immigrants, namely, to sustain the identity of the young generation and glorify the name of Lithuania in the world. After the reinstatement of the country's independence, in 1990, the function of crosses as a symbol of hope for freedom is no longer emphasized and the focus shifts to the image of "a particle of Lithuania", created by the Cross. Most crosses put up in private space traditionally express the owner's as- Pirations, wishes and pledges, usually related to gratitude to God for answered prayers and granted mercies and memories of the dear ones. However, in the majority of cases, the privately owned crosses, symbolize both - religious aspirations and manifestations of Lithuanian identity. In the US, unlike Lithuania, the variety of sculpture stories and plots used in Lithuanian crosses, wayside shrines and chapels is rather small. Topics related to religion are mostly represented by the Pensive Christ, crucifix, St. Mary of the Gates of Dawn, St. Mary of Šiluva and Saint Casimir. [...]

Based on iconography and material collected during the 2003 expedition and people's narrations, the cross making traditions typical of the Gelgaudiškis area from the first half of the 20th century to this day are discussed in the paper. The wooden monuments of folk small architecture - wooden crosses, roofed poles and chapels put on the trees - are examined in prospect of tradition and innovation. Also monuments of farmsteads, road-sides, cemeteries and church-yards are discussed, their art expression is analysed, and their most typical features and peculiarities are determined. Also, the background related to erection of such monuments is presented, and its significance in the life of a person and the society is evaluated. The cross-making monuments in the environs of Gelgaudiškis show that the traditions in erection of crosses in the first half of the 20th century are still cherished. The old monuments are being restored with conservation of their shape, decoration elements, or even using their old parts. The characteristic features of crosses of this period are their height, slender and elegant proportions, as well as a Sun silhouette formed of geometric or plant motive rays. Erecting new crosses, traditional sites are chosen, usually the roadsides. The art expression of newly-made crosses mostly accord with local traditions: they are simple, laconic, decorated with relief carving on its pole or its centre, also temperate decoration - a crown of rays, as a rule - often distinguishes the centre of the intersection of the cross bars. The motive of lily, popular in Suvalkija area, is often used in old and new crosses. Zanavykai people inhabiting this area used to mark the cross with inscriptions indicating whose this cross is, who donated, and when it was erected. This tradition is respected nowadays as well. The variety in local traditions is expanded by folk masters, especially those coming from other regions (e.g., V. Jackūnas, who comes from Aukštaitija).

Straipsnyje aptariami Lietuvos metaliniuose antkapiniuose kryžiuose esantys lieti šventųjų globėjų atvaizdai. Išskiriama, kurie šventieji buvo populiariausi metaliniuose kryžiuose ir ieškoma atsakymo, kodėl vaizduoti būtent jie. Svarstoma, kas galėjo būti tam tikro šventojo vaizdavimo pavyzdys, aptariama jo ikonografija bažnytiniame mene. Taip pat ieškoma sąsajų su tradicine lietuvių liaudies medžio skulptūra ir XIX a. pab.-XX a. pr. lietuviškomis religinėmis giesmėmis. Plačiau analizuojami neįprastos ikonografijos, bet gausiausiai metaliniuose antkapių kryžiuose išlikę šventųjų siužetai - Dvylikos apaštalų kolegija ir Kristaus apraudojimas. Crosses cast with images of the saints began to be erected in the cemeteries of Lithuania in the 2nd half of the 19th- early 20th centuries. They are common only to one region of Lithuania, which includes the ethnographical Samogitia and its neighbouring territories of the Western Highlands, Northern Lithuania and Sudovia. Most of the crosses are of a fairly simple construction and were probably made by local blacksmiths. The images of patron saints are presented as small figurines of 6 to 20cm high cast from lead, tin or aluminium. Unfortunately, only a few of them have survived - one or a small number of images of the same saint. Multi-figured compositions have been better preserved. It is assumed that the figurines were made by provincial folk masters, carvers or blacksmiths. The cast images of saints are static, quite primitive and in most cases depicted frontally. The images of saints found in metal crosses are associated with the belief that they functioned as guardians of the deceased during their journey after death. The following figurines of the saints are recorded: St. Mary Magdalene, St. Anne, St. Joseph, an Unknown Saint, St. Francis, St. Barbara and St. Peter. The most common kind of surviving crosses are those carrying the scene of the "Lamentation of Christ", in which the images of Joseph of Arimathea and St. Nicodemus are most commonly depicted. It is assumed that the popularity of the subject may have been influenced by the activity of the Fraternity of St. Joseph of Arimathea and St. Nicodemus. The latter fraternity took care of the burial of the poor Christians in Samogitia, spread the piety of the Way of the Cross as widely as possible and practiced the chanting of religious songs during commemorations of the dead. Another subject which has survived well (with 7 crosses) is "The Board of Apostles". It is interesting that the pupils of Jesus are normally depicted following the canon of the depiction of the twelve apostles of the Eastern Christians; however, here the pupils are depicted with their individual attributes which is a common feature in Western Christian art.

Religiniame gyvenime autorius išskiria tris svarbiausios jo formas: savarankiškai kaimo bendruomenėje gyventojų atliekamos apeigos; religinė kaimo veikla, kurioje dalyvauja kunigai; kolektyvinis kaimo gyventojų dalyvavimas bažnytinėse apeigose. Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos šios religinio gyvenimo formos, jų funkcijos ir vieta žmonių, kaimo, parapijos, kaip svarbiausio Bažnyčios struktūrinio elemento, gyvenime. Article, based on the field ethnographical material and ethnological researches, reveals the forms of rural community religious life in the 20th century. According to the author, the religious life is expressed in three main forms: rituals performed in the rural community by inhabitants themselves; religious activities of the rural community in which priests take part; collective participation of rural community in the church ceremonies. The article deals with these forms of community religious life, their functions and their place in the life of people, village and parish, as the main structural element оf the church.

Straipsnyje tyrinėjamas reikšmingas Mažosios Lietuvos kryždirbystės palikimas –antkapiniai metaliniai lietiniai kryžiai Smalininkų, Lauksargių ir Rusnės apylinkėse. Šio darbo tikslas – remiantis ilgamečiais sistemingais natūriniais tyrimais apibūdinti specifinio etnokultūrinio regiono lietinius kryžius kaip XIX a. pabaigos – XX a. pradžios tenykščių dailiųjų amatų būdingus elementus. Nustatytos tokių dirbinių technologinės bei stilistinės ypatybės leidžia geriau pažinti anuometinės tradicinės gyvensenos bei krašto kryždirbystės ypatybes. Tyrimas atskleidžia, kad metaliniai lietiniai antkapiniai kryžiai Mažojoje Lietuvoje, paplitę XIX a. pabaigoje ir XX a. pradžioje, iš dalies išstūmė senoviškesnius medinius bei akmeninius memorialinius ženklus. Mažosios Lietuvos lietiniai kryžiai atspindėjo įvairias istorizmo pakraipas bei vėlesnį jugendstilių. Ypatingai išplito neogotikinės stilistikos dirbiniai. Dalis lietinių kryžių buvo pažymimi firmos ženklais. Daug tokių ženklų priklausė Tilžės liejykloms, tačiau iš esmės krašte vyravo mažatiražė lietinių kryžių gamyba. Tikriausiai jie būdavo liejami įvairiose dirbtuvėse, naudojant daug skirtingų liejimo formų. Nors pati lietinių antkapinių kryžių technologija bei jų stilistiniai prototipai buvo atgabenti iš Vakarų, tačiau Mažojoje Lietuvoje galėjo būti sukurti lokaliniai tokių dirbinių variantai, galbūt nežinomi kituose Europos regionuose. Jie galėtų būti laikomi originaliais Mažosios Lietuvos kryždirbystės kūriniais. The article examines significant heritage of Lithuania Minor cross-crafting: gravestone cast metal crosses in Smalininkai, Lauksargiai and Rusnė environs. The purpose of this thesis is based on long-term systematic site researches to describe cast crosses of a specific ethnocultural region as characteristic elements of the fine crafts of those lands in the late 19th century – early 20th century. Defined technological and stylistic peculiarities of such articles allow to gain better understanding of peculiarities of the then traditional lifestyle and cross crafting of that land. The research reveals that metal cast gravestone crosses in Lithuania Minor, widely spread in the late 19th century and early 20th century, partly pushed older wooden or stone memorial signs out. Cast crosses of Lithuania Minor reflected various historicism trends and later jugendstil. Articles of Neo-Gothic style became highly popular. Some cast crosses had trademarks imprinted. A big number of such trademarks belonged to Tilsit foundries, but on the whole limited edition production of cast crosses prevailed in the land. They probably were cast in various workshops by using a number of different casts. Though the very technology of cast gravestone crosses and their stylistic prototypes were brought from the West, but local versions of such articles, probably unknown to the rest of Europe, could have been created in Lithuania Minor. They could be considered as original cross crafting articles of Lithuania Minor.

Straipsnyje aptariama Žemaitijoje ir Šiaurės Lietuvoje buvusių bei esamų Kryžių kalnų sakralinė reikšmė daugiausia dėmesio skiriant seniesiems kalnams, paminėtiems istoriniuose šaltiniuose dar XVI a. Apžvelgus šių kalnų istoriją, nagrinėjama vietos bendruomenės archajinė religinė pasaulėjauta bei Katalikų Bažnyčios santykis su valstietiško pasaulėvaizdžio išraiška – Kryžių kalnu. Cross building to mark a sacred place has been more or less frequently practiced in Christian Europe. Although the formation of the Christian worldview was slow in Žemaitija and Northern Lithuania, a rather unique phenomenon, Hills of Crosses, is found there. These are the Hill of Crosses in the fields between Linkuva-Plonėnas estates mentioned in 1565, the Hill of Crosses on the old mound of Jurgaičiai near Šiauliai and the offside of the Hill of Crosses near Dūseikiai (Telšiai district). The offside of the Hill of Crosses, first mentioned in 1538, was a private domain, presumably of the Rėkučiai-Kęsgailos, later passed over to the patrimony of the Kražiai chapel’s altar. Afterwards, in the course of litigations, it was incorporated into Luokė estate which was under the Bishop’s of Žemaičiai patrimony. After the abolition of the Jesuit Order, lawsuits over proprietorship rights of the offside domain were brought against the landlords who had purchased a domain there. At the end of the 4th decade of the 19th century, the Hill of Crosses was renamed Liausginai in the documents. This could be linked with the fact that the offside territory was almost uninhabited; therefore, in the course of time, the name of one of the owners of the surrounding domain stuck in the settlers’ memory. The “targeted” pastoral care characteristic of the Middle Ages when clergymen focused only on the community of a town, settlement or village whereas rural provinces were left unattended, is also clearly evident in the 17th century in the Telšiai district. Consequently, we can speak about at least minimal religious consciousness of the peasants. On the other hand, these conditions were rather conducive to practicing the old rites. However, the early Hills of Crosses should not be linked with the sites of the pagan necrocult. Three simple Latin crosses on the Hill on the topographic maps of the second half of the 18th century and a shrine close to the Pateklėnai village with the cross on top demonstrate a successful introduction of the reformed Roman Catholic Christianity in the district, although a filial parish church in Ubiškės was built only in 1785. The Catholic Church tolerated existence of such sacred places gradually adapting them to its worldview, but it did not induce the cult of the Hill of Crosses as it was a weird religious practice by nature.

Straipsnio objektas – mediniai kryžiai Priekulės apylinkių senosiose kapinėse, nagrinėjami remiantis autorių atliktais natūriniais tyrimais, anksčiau skelbtomis publikacijomis. Tikslas – aptarti specifinius Mažosios Lietuvos kryždirbystės bruožus. Darbe atskleidžiama, kad praeityje Priekulės apylinkėse medinių kryžių būta daugiau nei kitose Klaipėdos krašto vietose: buvo statomi įvairių formų bei dydžių mediniai kryžiai. Mažosios Lietuvos kryždirbystė – savita Lietuvos kryždirbystės atmaina. Iš 2004 m. pradėtų nuoseklių senųjų kapinių architektūrinio paveldo tyrimų Priekulės apylinkėse matyti, kad medinių antkapinių kryžių ten būta daug daugiau nei, pavyzdžiui, Šilutės – Pagėgių ruože. Iki 1944 m. rudens ten buvo gausiai dirbami tradicinio pavidalo kryžiai. Vėliau įsivyravo savadarbiai mediniai kryžiai. Visos senosios kapinės tirtame plote po 1944 m. rudens buvo suniokotos ir išgrobstytos. Jose stovėję mediniai kryžiai sudūlėjo, kai kurių liko tik liekanos. Pagal formų pobūdį aptikti kryžiai skirstyti į 2 grupes (paprastieji kryžiai ir kryžiai su stogeliu). 80 proc. geriau išlikusių kryžių buvo papuošti nesudėtingais geometriniais motyvais, kai kur būta įmantriau padailintų dirbinių. Tirtame plote vyravo neaukšti mediniai antkapiniai kryžiai. Aptikti kryžiai dažniau buvo dirbami iš ąžuolinių pjautinių tašelių, kartais iš lentų. Įrašai mediniuose kryžiuose būdavo įrėžiami, užrašomi dažais arba dedami į prikaltus medalionus. Dauguma tokių įrašų neįskaitomai sunyko. The object of the article – wooden crosses in the old cemetery of Priekulė neighborhoods, which are analyzed following natural research of authors, earlier publications. The purpose is to discuss specific features of cross crafting in Lithuania Minor. The research reveals that in the neighborhood of Priekulė there were more wooden crosses than in other places of Klaipėda region. The wooden crosses were of different forms and sizes. Cross crafting in Lithuania Minor is a distinctive feature of cross crafting in Lithuania. The research of the old cemetery architectural heritage in the neighborhood of Priekulė which was started in 2004 shows that there were more wooden crosses than in Pagėgiai sector, in Šilutė. Traditional shape crosses were widely made until the end of autumn, 1944. Later on self-made crosses begin to dominate. All old cemeteries in the researched area were devastated and plundered after 1944. Wooden crosses became rotten, only tailings remained of some crosses standing there. The crosses that were found were divided into two groups according to their shape (simple crosses and crosses with a roof). 80 percent of all extant crosses were decorated with simple geometric motif, others were decorated more fancifully. Low wooden crosses prevail in the research area. Often they were made of oak deal, sometimes planks were used. The inscriptions on the wooden crosses were incised, written with paint or nailed inside medallions. The majority of such inscriptions were illegible and rotten.

Tyrimo rezultatais pagrįstas darbo pradžioje pateiktas teiginys, kad aureolės, arba auksinio saulės vainiko (rato), simbolika Kryžių kalne yra galima realybė, ikikrikščioniškosios ir krikščioniškosios religinių kultūrų inkultūracijos palikimas, laikui bėgant pakitęs. Remiantis pateikta medžiaga daromos išvados, kad ikikrikščioniškosios religinės kultūros ir Katalikų Bažnyčios saitai, istorinės-geopolitinės aplinkybės lėmė aureolės, arba auksinio saulės vainiko (rato), simbolikos vietą Kryžių kalne. Iš devynių tradicinių aureolės, arba auksinio saulės vainiko, simbolikos Kryžių kalne raiškos pozicijų šiandien liko tik penkios. Dėl geopolitinių priežasčių Kryžių kalne nebėra įdubos – saulės aureolės simbolio. Aureolės simbolika akivaizdžiai atsiskleidžia ikikrikščioniškuose vasaros saulės grąžos ir krikščioniškuose Šv. Jono Krikštytojo, mirusiųjų garbinimo ir žuvusiųjų už religinę ir tautinę laisvę pagerbimo, švenčių šventimo apeiginiuose papročiuose. Unikalumu išsiskiria giesmių, kurių tekstuose metaforiškai minimi aureolės, arba auksinio saulės vainiko, simboliai, giedojimas. Kryžių kalne krikščionybė kai kuriems ikikrikščioniškiems simboliams suteikė naują – krikščionišką prasmę. Vienas tokių simbolių yra saulė, buvusi gerovę teikiančios dievybės simboliu, o krikščionybei veikiant tapusi Kristaus ir Švč. Mergelės Marijos simboliu. The article analyses the symbolism of a halo or a golden sun crown in the Hill of Crosses. A work aims to answer a question whether the symbolism of a halo or a golden sun crown in the Hill of Crosses is mystique or reality. A statement provided at the beginning of the work was based on the research result, i.e. the symbolism of a halo or a golden sun crown (circle) in the Hill of Crosses is reality and a heritage of the inculturation of pre-Christian and Christian cultures which had changed with time. On the basis of provided material, a conclusion is made that the place of the symbolism of a halo or a golden sun crown (circle) in the Hill of Crosses was conditioned by the relation between pre-Christian culture and the Catholic church and by historical–geopolitical conditions. Only five positions of traditional nine positions expressing the symbolism of a halo or a golden sun crown in the Hill of Crosses are left today. Because of geopolitical reasons, a bowl, a symbol of a sun halo, disappeared from the Hill of Crosses. The symbolism of a halo is perfectly revealed in celebratory rituals of pre-Christian celebration of summer solstice and Christian hallowing of St. John the Baptist and the dead and those who died for religious and ethnic freedom. Unique is the chanting of chants in which the symbols of a halo or a golden sun crown are metaphorically mentioned. In the Hill of Crosses, Christianity gave a new Christian meaning to certain pre-Christian symbols. One of such symbols is a sun which was a symbol of a god giving welfare. Because of Christianity it became a symbol of Jesus Christ and Saint Mary.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama Vilniaus Trijų Kryžių kalno muzika. Tyrimas pagrindė išsikeltą tezę, kad Vilniaus Trijų Kryžių kalno religinė muzika yra ne mitologinės, tautosakinės, bet gretimų tautų katalikiškosios kultūros praeities ir dabarties įvykių atspindys. Straipsnio autorius, remdamasis atliktų tyrimų duomenimis, daro tokias išvadas. Pirma, tiek Vilniaus, tiek ir "Kazimierz Dolnym" Trijų Kryžių kalno kultas yra skirtas įamžinti sunkius XVIII amžiuje Abiejų Tautų Respubliką apėmusio maro laikus. Antra, Trijų Kryžių kalno kultas – tai lenkų pranciškonų ir dominikonų pamaldumo kultūra, vienijanti Latviją, Lietuvą ir Lenkiją. Trečia, Vilniaus Trijų Kryžių kalno muzika savo istoriografine kilme – lenkų pranciškonų, o jos melosas – vietinės kilmės. The place of the hill of the three crosses was in Jerusalem on the hill of Golgotha. It is the symbol of the death and burial of the crucified Jesus Christ, described in the sourcebook of the Gospels, or the New Testament. The copy of this hill is also in Lithuania. It is the Hill of Three Crosses in Vilnius. Its historical origin is full of different legends. But nothing is said about its devotional practices; prayers and hymns are not mentioned in any liturgical or prayer book, published in Lithuania. [...] The research tries to analyse the repertoire of the hymns, used by the pilgrims; to present the mythological and folkloristic origin of this cult place; to find the analogues of the devotional practices of the Hill of Three Crosses in neighbouring countries, to reveal the origin of music in these devotional practices. [...] The materials of 1987-1998 summer expeditions were used together with the most modem historical publications. According to the results of the research and collected historical facts, the following conclusions can be made: firstly, either Vilnius or Polish Kazimierz Dolnym cults of the Three Crosses Hill are intended to memorize the difficult times of plague in the 17th century of both countries; secondly, the cult of the Three Crosses Hill is the culture of Polish Franciscan and Dominican spirituality, unifying Latvia, Lithuania and Poland; thirdly, the historiographic origin of Vilnius Three Crosses Hill music is from Polish Franciscans, but its melos is local; the research done bases the thesis that the music of Vilnius Three Crosses Hill is not of mythological or folkloristic origin, but it is the reflection of Catholic historically - geopolitical and intercultural past and present events.

2000 metais gavus paramą iš Lietuvos valstybinio mokslo ir studijų fondo ištirta 15 senųjų kapinių Nemuno deltos regioninio parko vakarinėje dalyje (dauguma jų užfiksavo M. Purvinas, kitose talkininkavo M. Purvinienė). Keliuose tūkstančių fotonuotraukų bei išsamiuose aprašymuose, brėžiniuose ten buvo užfiksuoti 1455 objektai. Tarp jų buvo ir medinių dirbinių – antkapinių kryžių ir krikštų. Deja, Nemuno deltos gamtinės sąlygos itin nepalankios senesniems mediniams dirbiniams: aukštas gruntinio vandens lygis, reguliarūs potvyniai, drėgnesnis mikroklimatas ir pan. sparčiai ardo medieną. Tokiose sąlygose atsidūrę tradiciniai kapinių įrangos mediniai dirbiniai dar patyrė masinį senųjų kapinių niokojimą po 1944 metų (žinomi faktai, kai į ištuštėjusį kraštą atsiųsti pokariniai atvykėliai medinius kryžius ir pan. susirinkdavo malkoms). Išstūmus senuosius krašto gyventojus, nutrūko ir ilgaamžės vietinės kryždirbystės tradicijos. Straipsnyje aptariamos 6 tenykštės senosios kapinės, kuriose autoriai užfiksavo senų medienos dirbinių – 49 antkapinius kryžius bei krikštus. Išsamus senųjų kapinių elementų tyrimas leido apibūdinti Mažosios Lietuvos tradicinės kryždirbystės (kaip Lietuvos kryždirbystės – Pasaulio paveldo objekto savitos atmainos) ypatybes. Daugumą medinių dirbinių datuoti dabar labai problemiška: pagal įvairius požymius bei tyrėjų patirtį jie suskirstyti į tradicinius (iki 1944 m.), pokarinius (1945-1960 m.) bei naujausių laikų dirbinius. After support was allocated from the Lithuanian State Science and Studies Foundation in 2000, 15 old graves in the western part of the Nemunas Loops Regional Park were studied (the majority of them were recorded by M. Purvinas, others – by M. Purviniene). 1455 objects were recorded in several thousands pictures and extensive descriptions and drafts. These also included wooden articles, i.e. tomb crosses. Unfortunately, natural conditions of the Nemunas Loops Regional Park are extremely unfavourable for older wooden artefacts: high level of groundwater, regular flooding, wet microclimate and other factors rapidly destroy wooden objects. These were the conditions influencing traditional wooden tomb artefacts. More mass destructions of old graveyards were caused after 1944, when post-war newcomers arriving to the devastated land used wooden crosses and other objects as firewood. With local inhabitants leaving the land, durable local traditions of cross making vanished. The article discusses 6 old local graveyards where the authors recorded old wooden artefacts – 49 tomb crosses and other artefacts. An extensive research of tomb elements allowed defining peculiarities of traditional art of cross making (as a peculiar brunch of Lithuanian art of cross making – an object of World Heritage) of Lithuania Minor. It is very problematic to date the majority of wooden artefacts: according to various features and researchers’ experience, they have been classified into traditional (before 1944), post-war (1945–1960) as well as wooden objects of the modern times.

Straipsnio objektas: liaudies dvasinės kultūros reiškinys – stebuklinga gydomąja galia garsėjantys kryžiai ir koplytėlės Žemaitijoje. Tikslas – atskleisti, kokioje aplinkoje įkurdinti ir kokio turinio paminklai šia galia pasižymi. Metodas – ikonologinė interpretacija. Straipsnio autorė daro tokias išvadas. Pirma, stebuklinga kryžių ir koplytėlių galia siejasi su ypatingomis juos supančios aplinkos gamtinių elementų – šaltinio, vandens, akmens ar medžio – savybėmis, o jų idėjinė prasmė išreiškiama krikščioniška forma ir turiniu. Antra, veiksmas "svetimoje" arba ribine specifika pasižyminčioje aplinkoje yra viena svarbiausių stebuklingųjų galių pasireiškimo sąlygų. Todėl dauguma gydomosiomis savybėmis garsėjančių paminklų yra už gyvenamosios teritorijos ribų, pakelėse, kryžkelėse, senose kapinėse ir gamtos prieglobstyje – prie šaltinių, miškuose, šalia augalotų medžių ir ant didelių akmenų. Trečia, stebuklais garsėjančias vietas žymi pavieniai kryžiai, stogastulpiai, koplytėlės arba kelių skirtingų rūšių paminklų grupės. Jų ikonografinis turinys nėra labai įvairus, dažniausiai tai Jėzaus Nazariečio, įvairių siužetų Švč. Mergelės Marijos, šv. Jono Nepomuko, šv. Roko, šv. Antano skulptūros. Jomis vaizduojamiems šventiesiems suteikiama galia grindžiama tiek kanoniškai pastoviu siužeto prasmės interpretavimu, tiek liaudies pamaldumo praktikoje individualiai jiems suteikiamomis papildomomis funkcijomis. The paper focuses on an extraordinary phenomenon of the Lithuanian folk spiritual culture, the small Samogitian sacred complexes that manifest healing powers. In the attempt to determine what kind of monuments manifest such powers, Burinskaitė analyses their shapes, content and locations. The majority of the phenomenal Samogitian crosses and chapels arc located outside inhabited territories - at roadsides, crossroads, old cemeteries and in the wilderness - on water springs, woods, next to tall trees and on big stones. Thus, their healing powers are often related to exceptional qualities of these natural objects. However, their spiritual significance is often inscribed using Christian symbols and content. The figures most often featured on the magic crosses and chapels are those of Jesus of Nazareth, numerous scenes of the life of the Virgin Mary, the Saint John of Nepomuk, St. Rocco, and St. Anthony. The magic powers attributed to these saints are based on canonical interpretations of the portrayed stories, but also on additional functions attributed to these saints in individual folk piety practices.

Remiantis archyvine ikonografine medžiaga, straipsnyje analizuojama XIX a. II pusės - XX a. pradžios Šiaurės Lietuvos smulkioji sakralinė architektūra (mediniai paminklai – kryžiai, stogastulpiai, koplytstulpiai ir koplytėlės) ir jos dvasinis turinys. Pristatomi šiame areale paplitusių paminklų tipai, būdingi jų architektūros bruožai ir dekoro ypatumai. Straipsniu siekiama atskleisti XIX a. II pusės - XX a. pradžios Šiaurės Lietuvos smulkiosios sakralinės architektūros lokalinius savitumus bei tarpregioninių kryždirbystės tradicijų įtakoje susiformavusius meninės raiškos bruožus. XIX a. II pusės - XX a. pradžios Šiaurės Lietuvos kryždirbystės panorama atskleidžia daugiau ar mažiau visai Lietuvai būdingą medinių paminklų rūšinę įvairovę. Populiariausios ir maždaug tolygiai paplitusios paminklų formos yra mediniai kryžiai ir koplytstulpiai, tuo tarpu ant žemės pastatomos koplytėlės gausiau statytos vakarinėje, o stogastulpiai – rytinėje krašto dalyje. Šių paminklų formų bei dekoro savitumą lėmė regioninės ir lokalinės kryždirbystės tradicijos, o unikalumą užtikrino keleto skirtingų tipų paminklams būdingų architektūrinių formų jungtys. The peculiarities of the monuments of wooden architecture in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century formed in Northern Lithuania because of the interaction of the cross making traditions in two regions - Aukštaitija and Žemaitija (Highlands and Lowlands). Generalizing it can be said that panorama of cross making in Northern Lithuania more or less reflects the variety of wooden monuments characteristic of the whole of Lithuania. The regional and local cross-making traditions predetermined the peculiarity of the monument forms and decor of this region, and the specific combinations of architectural forms ensure its uniqueness.

Straipsnyje aptariami vieno iš seniausiiį ir iki šiol mažai tyrinėto savitos formos XVIII a. Alsėdžių medinio paminklo tipologijos klausimai. Įvairias autoriai nurodė skirtingus jo tipus: kryžius (Bronislovas Pilsudskis (Bronisław Piłsudski), Žibuntas Mikšys), dvigubas, arba Šv. Benedikto kryžius (Mykolas Brenšteinas (Michal Brensztejn), Jonas Grinius), savita namelio formos koplytėlė (Jonas Balys, Bronius Kviklys), stogelinis kryžius (Juzefas Perkovskis). Šiandienos kryždirbystės tyrinėtojai šio klausimo nesprendė, todėl straipsnyje bandoma nustatyti Alsėdžių paminklo tipą, iškeliamos hipotezės dėl jo dviejų skersinių paskirties. The article tackles the problem of typology of one of the oldest monuments located at the village of Alsėdžiai. Taking into account diverse opinions by numerous authors, it is currently not really possible to identify the Alsėdžiai monument as the karavykas-type (double-bar) cross, unless some corroborating church documents emerge. When compared to other examples from the ip"" century, the Alsėdžiai monument demonstrates parallel features with stave crosses in Samogitia and Eastern Lithuania, such as two-slope roofs in cross-wise orientation, sometimes, horizontal details on the vertical. The purpose of such is not precisely clear, therefore hypothesis is made that: 1- by analogy with other three stave crosses with one horizontal short bar, the top horizontal bar of the Alsėdžiai monument could hide an opening in the pillar; 2. the horizontals were possibly supposed for textiles - for hanging sacrifices in memory, gratitude and prayers for the deceased.

Pavasarininkai – viena gausiausių katalikiškų organizacijų, tarpukariu turėjusi savo skyrius – kuopas, kuopeles – atokiausiose Lietuvos vietose. Savo veiklos pradžia pavasarininkai laikė 1912 metus. Tada pradėtas leisti jaunimui skirtas laikraštis „Pavasaris“, tapęs slaptai veikusių jaunimo kuopelių jungtimi ir davęs pavadinimą būsimai organizacijai. XX a. trečiajame-ketvirtajame dešimtmečiais ši jaunimo organizacija buvo viena svarbiausių liaudiškos memorialistikos sklaidoje: ji pastatė itin daug paminklų. Jų visuma atspindi bendrą pirmosios Nepriklausomybės laikotarpio memorialistikos situaciją. Nemenka tų paminklų dalis – tipiški ano meto kryždirbystės objektai. Kita vertus, pavasarininkų kryžiai turėjo ir savitų bruožų, praturtino memorialinių liaudies statinių ikonografiją. Daugelis „Pavasario“ kuopų pastatytų kryždirbystės objektų paženklinti reljefine organizacijos emblema ir tautiniu simboliu – Gedimino stulpais. Paminkluose neretai vaizduoti Kristaus kančios įrankiai, Mišių taurė su ostija, Jėzaus monograma, Jėzaus ar Marijos bareljefai, Apokalipsės avinėlis, gulintis ant knygos su septyniais antspaudais, sparnuotos angeliukų galvutės, klūpančių ir besimeldžiančių angelų figūrėlės. Be to, kryžius lydėjo platoki įrašai. O visa tai kartu buvo komponuojama į įvairiausias formas, struktūras ir padabinama begale ornamentinių puošmenų. Šio straipsnio tikslas – aptarti pavasarininkų pastatytus kryžius, jų kontekstą ir pamėginti užčiuopti kryždirbystės tradicijos pulsavimą minėtu laikotarpiu, mėginama išryškinti pavasarininkų darbuotės reikšmę kryždirbystės raidai. “Pavasarininkai” was one of the largest Catholic organisations which had its branches – groups and cells – in the most remote places across Lithuania during the interwar period. “Pavasarininkai” considered that their organisation became active in 1912. The newspaper “Pavasaris” [Spring] for young people was then first published. It became a link of secretly operating youth cells and gave its name to the future organisation. In 1920s–30s, this youth organisation was one of the key organisation disseminating folk memorials: it built a considerable number of memorials. They all reflect a general situation of memorials in the first Independence period. A number of those memorials are typical objects of the then cross-making. On the other hand, “Pavasarininkai” crosses had distinctive features and enriched the iconography of memorial folk structures. Many objects of cross-making that were built by “Pavasaris” groups bear a raised emblem of the organisation and a national symbol – the Columns of Gediminas. Memorials often display the weapons of the Agony of Christ, the Mass Cup with a wafer, a Jesus monogram, bas-reliefs of Jesus or Mary, the Apocalyptic Lamb lying on a book with seven seals, winged angel heads and figurines of kneeling and praying angels. Moreover, crosses had rather wide inscriptions. All this together was arranged into various forms and structures, and decorated with numerous ornaments. This article aims to discuss crosses built by “Pavasarininkai” and their context, to try to feel the pulse of the cross-making tradition during the period concerned and to highlight the significance of “Pavasarininkai” activities to the development of cross-making.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama Vilniaus Trijų Kryžių kalno muzika. Apie šį religijos fenomeną neužsimenama nė viename Lietuvoje išleistame liturginiame maldyne ar giesmyne. Šio straipsnio tikslas yra atsakyti į klausimą: ar Vilniaus Trijų Kryžių kalne maldininkų giedamos giesmės, t.y. skambanti muzika, yra vietinės ar atneštinės kultūros reliktas? Tyrimas pagrindė iškeltą tezę, kad Vilniaus Trijų Kryžių kalno pamaldumo muzika yra ne mitologinės, tautosakinės, bet kaimyninių tautų religinės, istorinės-geopolitinės ir bendrakultūrinės praeities ir dabarties įvykių atspindys. The article researches the music of the Three Crosses Hill in Vilnius. Its prayers and hymns are not mentioned in any liturgical or prayer book published in Lithuania. There follows the natural question of whether the hymns and music performed by the pilgrims on the hill of Three Crosses are the relics of local or foreign culture? To find the answer to this question is the object of the research of the author. The research shows that the music of Three Crosses Hill in Vilnius is not of mythological or folkloristic origin. It is the reflection of intercultural past and present events of a Catholic historical and geopolitical nature.

Kryždirbystė yra vienas unikaliausių lietuvių liaudies meno ir kultūros reiškinių, jos istorija apima apie 400 metų laikotarpį, kuris paženklintas įvairiais draudimais (jie buvo itin griežti okupacijų periodais). Materiali jos išraiška yra medinis paminklas, kurį sudaro vieningas architektūrinės dalies, skulptūrų, kalvio nukalto geležinio kryžiaus, kartais net tapytų paveikslų kompleksas. Sakralinio turinio medžio paminklas yra specifinis lietuvio kultūrinės, meninės ir dvasinės raiškos būdas, reiškiantis prašymą, maldavimą, padėką, džiaugsmą ar skausmą, liudijantis menininko talentą, įaugęs į peizažą, bendruomenės gyvenimą, apipintas papročiais. XIX a. tokių paminklų būta kone kiekvienoje sodyboje, pakelėse, laukuose, kaimuose, net miškuose, jau nekalbant apie kapines ir bažnyčių šventorius. Šiandien tai paveldas, kurio dalį yra priglaudę muziejai, kurio trupinėlių dar galima rasti sodybose, kapinėse, pakelėse. Deja, didžioji dalis tų neįkainojamų lobių yra prarasta, juos teprimena XX a. tyrinėtojų, kraštotyrininkų nuotraukos, piešiniai (A. Jaroševičiaus, A. Varno, A. Galdiko, B. Buračo ir kt.). Tradicinių medinių liaudies paminklų gausa, nepaprasta jų formų ir dekoro įvairovė visų pirma kėlė būtinybę juos susisteminti, suklasifikuoti. Patikimas ir bene talpiausias klasifikacijos pagrindas – statinio konstrukcija. Skirtingai nuo tradicinių kryžių ir koplytėlių, šiuolaikiniuose liaudies paminkluose sunku įžvelgti regionines ypatybes, juose ryškesnis individualus meistrų drožybos būdas, skulptūrinių ir architektūrinių formų modeliavimo stilius. Cross-crafting is one of the most unique Lithuanian folk art and culture phenomenon with the history covering a period of about 400 years. It underwent many restrictions and bans, with the most severe being during occupational period. The material expression of this art is a wooden monument – a complex of sculptures, iron crosses and sometimes even paintings. A sacral wooden monument is a specific way of Lithuanian cultural, artistic and spiritual way of expression meaning gratitude, begging, joy or pain, demonstrating the artist’s talent. In the 19th c., almost all estates, fields, villages and even woods not to mention cemeteries and church territories had these monuments. Today, this is legacy, part of which is kept in museums, and same part of which can be found in estates, cemeteries or on roadsides. Unfortunately, the major share of those invaluable treasures has been lost. Information on them can be only found in photographs, drawings of researchers of the 20th century (A. Jaroševičius, A. Varnas, A. Galdikas, B. Buratis and etc.). The abundance of traditional wooden monuments, their peculiar form and decorations first provoked the necessity to systemise and classify them. The construction of a structure is the most reliable and spacious basis for classification. Unlike traditional crosses and chapels, it is difficult to see a regional identity in modern monuments.
