Sediment grain size characterization is one of the main components of aeolian geomorphology research. Sand particle size can determine the basic form of sand movement. The distribution and form of grain size parameters of different types of sediments were calculated using six surface types of sediments around Qixing Lake in the Kubuqi Desert: Mobile dune Semi-fixed dune Fixed dune Lakeshore terrace Wetland and Grassy flat wetland The results showed that the surface sediments were mainly composed of medium sand and fine sand, and all types were negatively skewed. The differentiation pattern of the saltation component and suspended component of the surface sediment is characterized by a twostage pattern. The percentage contribution of suspended components in lakeshore terraces, wetlands, and Grassy flat wetlands (total average 21.07%) is more than twice that of mobile dunes, semifixed dunes, and fixed dunes (total average 9.47%). This suggests that mobile dunes, semi-fixed dunes, and fixed dunes are not the main contributing surface type of suspended material in the Qixing Lake area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Loess Plateau is an important grain-producing area and energy base in China and is an area featuring dramatic changes in both surface and underground processes. However, the associations between surface deformation and groundwater storage changes in different landscape types in the region are still unclear. Based on Sentinel-1 and GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) data, this study monitored and verified the surface deformation and groundwater storage changes in different landscape types, such as those of the Kubuqi Desert, Hetao Irrigation District, Jinbei Mining Area, and Shendong Mining Area, in the Loess Plateau of China from 2020 to 2021. Through time series and cumulative analysis using the same spatial and temporal resolution, the associations between these two changes in different regions are discussed. The results show that: (1) the surface deformation rates in different landscape types differ significantly. The minimum surface deformation rate in the Kubuqi Desert is −5~5 mm/yr, while the surface deformation rates in the Hetao Irrigation District, the open-pit mine recovery area in the Jinbei Mining Area, and the Shendong Mining Area are −60~25 mm/yr, −25~25 mm/yr, and −95.33~26 mm/yr, respectively. (2) The regional groundwater reserves all showed a decreasing trend, with the Kubuqi Desert, Hetao Irrigation District, Jinbei Mining Area, and Shendong Mining Area declining by 359.42 mm, 103.30 mm, 45.60 mm, and 691.72 mm, respectively. (3) The surface elasticity deformation had the same trend as the temporal fluctuation in groundwater storage, and the diversion activity was the main reason why the temporal surface deformation in the Hetao Irrigation District lagged behind the change in groundwater storage by 1~2 months. The measure of "underground water reservoirs in coal mines" slows down the rate of collapse of coal mine roof formations, resulting in the strongest time-series correlation between mild deformation of the surface of the Shendong mine and changes in the amount of groundwater reserves (R = 0.73). This study analyzes the associations between surface deformation and groundwater storage changes in different landscape areas of the Loess Plateau of China and provides new approaches to analyzing the dynamic associations between the two and the causes of changes in both variables. Water shortages are the main factor restricting the survival and construction of shelterbelts in sandy areas. Comprehensive analysis of the water balance characteristics of forest stands is crucial for scientifically understanding and regulating the water supply of shelterbelts in sandy areas and formulating appropriate vegetation cultivation and restoration strategies. We simultaneously monitored outer-forest precipitation, canopy interception, stemflow, throughfall, forest transpiration, understory evapotranspiration, and soil moisture content changes in the Salix forest in the Kubuqi Desert during the main growing season (June–October) of 2022. The results showed that the total evapotranspiration of the forest was 185.62 mm, and the components and their proportions of precipitation during the same period were as follows: forest floor evapotranspiration, 94.43 mm (35.88%); stand transpiration, 68.34 mm (25.97%); and canopy interception, 22.85 mm (8.68%). Based on the water balance of the 0–60 cm soil layer and by integrating the changes in soil water storage and the influence of external water transport, the net runoff of the forestland was calculated to be approximately 77.58 mm; that is, the water balance requirements for growth were met. In the future, appropriate irrigation and supplementation can be carried out in June and July to ensure healthier growth in the shelterbelt, and plant photosynthesis and internal physiology can be further studied for cultivation in other desert areas. Amidst climate change, managing water and vegetation adaptability is vital in ecology and agriculture. Salix psammophila is key in deserts, maintaining ecological balance and combating desertification. Understanding its surface condensation and response to weather is critical for survival. This study aims to investigate the formation patterns of surface condensation water under S. psammophila at different irrigation levels and the influence of precipitation, temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. Conducted in China's Kubuqi Desert from June to September 2022, the study employed micro-lysimeters with four irrigation test sets and a control group, conducting detailed observations at various locations. The results indicate that S. psammophila significantly influences surface condensation water by blocking solar radiation and reducing wind speed. The drip irrigation system also regulates surface condensation water on S. psammophila. Moreover, meteorological factors such as 24 h maximum temperature, relative humidity difference, wind speed, and air vapor pressure deficit show significant correlations with surface condensation water formation. In conclusion, this study enhances the understanding of desert ecosystem water balance, vegetation adaptability, and efficient water resource utilization. Abstract Background Bioprospecting of actinobacteria isolated from Kubuqi desert, China for antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic metabolites production and their structure elucidation. Results A total of 100 actinobacteria strains were selectively isolated from Kubuqi desert, Inner Mongolia, China. The taxonomic characterization revealed Streptomyces as the predominant genus comprising 37 different species, along with the rare actinobacterial genus Lentzea. The methanolic extracts of 60.8% of strains exhibited potent antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and high to mild in vitro cytotoxicity against PC3 (prostate cancer) and A549 (lung carcinoma) cell lines. The metabolomics analysis by TLC, HPLC-UV/vis, HPLC-MS and NMR showed the presence of compounds with molecular weights ranging from 100 to 1000 Da. The scale-up fermentation of the prioritized anti-Gram-negative strain PU-KB10–4 (Streptomyces griseoviridis), yielded three pure compounds including; griseoviridin (1; 42.0 mgL− 1) with 20 fold increased production as compared to previous reports and its crystal structure as monohydrate form is herein reported for the first time, mitomycin C (2; 0.3 mgL− 1) and a new bacterial metabolite 4-hydroxycinnamide (3; 0.59 mgL− 1). Conclusions This is the first report of the bioprospecting and exploration of actinobacteria from Kubuqi desert and the metabolite 4-hydroxycinnamide (3) is first time isolated from a bacterial source. This study demonstrated that actinobacteria from Kubuqi desert are a potential source of novel bioactive natural products. Underexplored harsh environments like the Kubuqi desert may harbor a wider diversity of actinobacteria, particularly Streptomyces, which produce unique metabolites and are an intriguing source to develop medicinally valuable natural products.

The goal of this study was to investigate the soil particle-size distribution (PSD) and pore structure characteristics in the Kubuqi Desert in order to provide basic data for gaining insights into the soil-modifying properties of the local vegetation. Based on laser diffraction analysis, we measured the soil PSD and calculated the single and multi-fractal dimensions of the soils under typical artificial forest and natural grassland vegetation. The diameters, volumes and surface areas of the soil pores were determined via nitrogen adsorption experiments. The relationships between the fractal characteristics and pore structure parameters of the soil were investigated via redundancy analysis and stepwise regression. The clay content was less than 2.0%, and the sand content was greater than 75.0%. There was variability in the PSD and fractal dimension, which was mainly observed for the 0–20 cm, 20–80 cm, and 80–100 cm soil layers. In the 0–80 cm, the fine particle content, single fractal dimension (D), entropy dimension (D1), ratio of D1 to the capacity dimension (D1/D0), and correlation dimension (D2) were smaller for the forest soils than for the grassland soils. The fine particle (clay and silt) content of the 80–100 cm soil layer was approximately 37.8% higher for the Salix psammophila-8a than for the Salix psammophila-3a, and it was approximately 161.4% higher for the Populus popular-35a than for the Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica-8a. The silt content, D1, D1/D0, and D2 were significantly positively correlated with the specific surface area (SSA), total pore volume (TPV), and average pore diameter (APD) of the nanopores (p < 0.05, 0.01, or 0.001), and they were significantly negatively correlated with the percentage of the micropore volume (PMV) (p < 0.05 or 0.01). In the Kubuqi Desert, the fine particle content and fractal dimensions of the soil layer below the root zone of shrub and arbor vegetation increased with increasing stand age, but the trend was reversed in the shallower soil layers. The variability of the soil PSD characteristics was strongly correlated with the variability of the nanopore parameters on the microscopic scale, suggesting that the total pore volume, average pore diameter, and percentage of the micropore volume may be potential indicators of the soil structure and quality.

Continuous remote-sensing monitoring of sand in desert areas and the exploration of the spatio–temporal evolution characteristics of soil–wind erosion has an important scientific value for desertification prevention and ecological restoration. In this study, the Kubuqi Desert was selected as the study area, and the Landsat series satellite remote sensing data, supplemented by satellite remote sensing data such as GE images, SPOT-5, ZY-3, GF-1/2/6, etc., integrated object-oriented, decision tree, and auxiliary human–computer interaction interpretation methods, developed the Kubuqi Desert area dataset from 1990 to 2020, and established a soil erosion intensity database of the past 30 years based on the soil–wind erosion correction equation. The results show that the application of the training samples obtained by a high-score collaborative ground sampling to land use/cover classification in desert areas can effectively improve the efficiency of remote-sensing mapping of sand changes and the accuracy of change information identification, and the overall accuracy of the classification results is 95%. In general, the sandy area of the Kubuqi Desert area has decreased year by year, during which the mobile sand in the hinterland of the desert has expanded in a scattered distribution. The overall soil–wind erosion intensity showed a downward trend, especially since 2000; the ecological improvement trend after the implementation of desertification control projects is obvious. Changes in the sand type contributed the most to the reduction of soil–wind erosion intensity (contribution 81.14%), ecological restoration played a key role in reducing the soil–wind erosion intensity (contribution 14.42%), and the increase of forest and grass vegetation covers and agricultural oases played a positive role in solidifying the soil- and wind-proof sand fixation. The pattern of sandy land changes in desert areas is closely related to the national ecological civilization construction policy and the impact of climate change.

Desertification is one of the major challenges facing humanity. However, there is no effective way to effectively control desertification. China is experiencing serious desertification, and to alleviate this trend, China has implemented a series of major ecological projects since 1978 and has achieved good results. Remote sensing can record changes in surface processes over a long period of time and can play an active role in desertification monitoring and governance. However, there is no systematic remote sensing monitoring method for desertification. In response to this problem, this paper takes a demonstration and reconstruction project of the United Nations desertification in the Kubuqi Desert in China as an example. By using the 30-year time series Landsat data, we propose a new remote sensing monitoring method for the impact of ecological restoration engineering of desert to monitor the spatial and temporal evolution pattern of the Kubuqi Desert in the past 30 years and the impact of the human ecological reconstruction project on the location of land use types in the Kubuqi Desert. In addition, the method analyzes the impact of the Kubuqi Desert Reconstruction Project on the local ecological environment changes from time and space perspectives. The results show the following: (1) During 1991–2017, the Kubuqi Desert Reconstruction Project improved the cultivated land, afforestation, and the Yellow River Drainage to control the sand and in conjunction with other renovation projects improved the ecological environment. The area of the sandy land decreased from 45.76% to 28.66%, while the areas of the waters wetland and artificial forest (shrub), urban construction land, and agricultural land increased; (2) There are obvious time and space differences in the transformation, and the vegetation cover increases as a whole. The obvious change areas are mainly distributed in the riverbank irrigation area of the Yellow River section of the Kubuqi Desert and the torrents such as the Maobula Kong, Buer Taigou and Heilaigou and other mountain gully areas. Afforestation combats desertification and improves the ecological environment but leads to huge consumption of water resources. Understanding how ecological restoration affects the regional water balance is important for scientific desertification management. Using remote sensing satellite images and meteorological data, we analyzed the impacts of ecological restoration on water resources in the Kubuqi Desert during 1986–2017. Human activities accounted for 60.14% of the desertification reversal: annual average NDVI increased by 94%, the severe desertification area decreased by 30%, and the non-desertification area increased threefold. Vegetation restoration accounted for 70.96% of the evapotranspiration increase of 5.17 mm·yr–1. However, precipitation could not support the increased water demand, which relied on replenishment from groundwater and Yellow River diversion. Therefore, to ensure water security in the Kubuqi, species that use less water should be used in future ecological restoration, and decision-makers should carefully consider the huge water consumption cost of ecological restoration.
