River deltas belong to the most densely settled places on earth. Although they only account for 5% of the global land surface, over 550 million people live in deltas. These preferred livelihood locations, which feature flat terrain, fertile alluvial soils, access to fluvial and marine resources, a rich wetland biodiversity and other advantages are, however, threatened by numerous internal and external processes. Socio-economic development, urbanization, climate change induced sea level rise, as well as flood pulse changes due to upstream water diversion all lead to changes in these highly dynamic systems. A thorough understanding of a river delta's general setting and intra-annual as well as long-term dynamic is therefore crucial for an informed management of natural resources. Here, remote sensing can play a key role in analyzing and monitoring these vast areas at a global scale. The goal of this study is to demonstrate the potential of intra-annual time series analyses at dense temporal, but coarse spatial resolution for inundation characterization in five river deltas located in four different countries. Based on 250 m MODIS reflectance data we analyze inundation dynamics in four densely populated Asian river deltas-namely the Yellow River Delta (China), the Mekong Delta (Vietnam), the Irrawaddy Delta (Myanmar), and the Ganges-Brahmaputra (Bangladesh, India)-as well as one very contrasting delta: the nearly uninhabited polar Mackenzie Delta Region in northwestern Canada for the complete time span of one year (2013). A complex processing chain of water surface derivation on a daily basis allows the generation of intra-annual time series, which indicate inundation duration in each of the deltas. Our analyses depict distinct inundation patterns within each of the deltas, which can be attributed to processes such as overland flooding, irrigation agriculture, aquaculture, or snowmelt and thermokarst processes. Clear differences between mid-latitude, subtropical, and polar deltas are illustrated, and the advantages and limitations of the approach for inundation derivation are discussed.

OBJETIVO: A neoproliferação intimal e o remodelamento têm sido implicados como os maiores fatores causadores de reestenose. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a ação da L-arginina por via oral, nesses dois fatores, após lesão por balão, em artérias ilíacas de coelhos hipercolesterolêmicos. MÉTODOS: Foram utilizados dezenove coelhos, que foram divididos em dois grupos: controle (GC) e arginina (GA), respectivamente com dezenove e dezessete artérias estudadas. Os animais foram submetidos a lesão por balão de angioplastia, em suas artérias ilíacas, quinze dias após início de dieta hipercolesterolêmica a 2%. A seguir, os animais do GA passaram a receber uma solução de L-arginina, por via oral, na dose de 1 g/kg/dia. Após o sacrifício, no 15º dia após a lesão por balão, procedeu-se a cortes histológicos das artérias, as quais foram coradas e fixadas. Utilizou-se como representativa do desenvolvimento da lesão a razão da área da neoíntima (em mm²) pela camada média (em mm²). Por sua vez, a razão da área total do vaso em sua porção medial (de maior contato com o balão) pela área total do vaso no segmento referencial (de menor contato com o balão) foi a definidora do remodelamento. RESULTADOS: A média do espessamento neointimal (NI/M) foi de 0,8151±0,2201 no GC e de 0,3296±0,1133 no GA. Não houve diferença entre os tipos de remodelamento entre os dois grupos estudados. CONCLUSÃO: No modelo experimental utilizado, a L-arginina foi capaz de reduzir o espessamento intimal em coelhos hipercolesterolêmicos e não teve ação sobre o remodelamento arterial.OBJECTIVE: It has been implied that neointimal proliferation and remodeling are the major causes of restenosis. The objective of this study is to assess the effect of orally administered L-arginine on these two factors in hypercholesterolemic rabbits that had suffered an injury to their iliac arteries caused by a catheter balloon. METHODS: The study included nineteen rabbits that were divided in two groups: control (CG) and arginine (AG). There were 19 arteries studied from the control group and 17 in the arginine group. The animals were placed on a 2% hypercholesterolemic diet for 15 days and then submitted to a balloon angioplasty in order to produce a lesion in their iliac arteries. Next, the AG animals were given a 1g/kg/day oral dose of a L-arginine solution. The animals were sacrificed 15 days after the angioplasty procedure and histological artery sections were prepared, stained and fixed. The ratio between the neointimal area (in mm²) and the media layer (in mm²) was used to represent lesion development. In order to determine remodeling, the ratio between the total area of the medial portion of the vessel (greater balloon contact) and the total area of the reference segment of the vessel (less balloon contact) was used. RESULTS: Mean neointimal thickness (NI/M) was 0.8151±0.2201 in CG and 0.3296±0.1133 in AG. Remodeling patterns for the two groups studied were similar. CONCLUSION: In the experimental model used, L-arginine was able to reduce intimal tissue thickness in hypercholesterolemic rabbits but did not act on artery remodeling.

Rice is the single most important crop for food security in Asia. Knowledge about the distribution of rice fields is also relevant in the context of greenhouse-relevant methane emissions, disease transmission, and water resource management. Copernicus Sentinel-1 provides the first openly available archive of C-band SAR (synthetic aperture radar) data at high spatial and temporal resolution. We developed one of the first methods that shows the potential of this data for accurate and timely mapping of rice-growing areas. We used superpixel segmentation to create spatially averaged backscatter time series, which is robust to speckle and reduces the amount of data to process. This method has been applied to six study sites in different rice-growing regions of the world and achieved an average overall accuracy of 0.83. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this paper we present the results of our analyses of multidiurnal low-resolution Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) thermal data for coal fire-related thermal anomaly detection. Results are presented for data of the Jharia coal mining region of India. We combine three relatively new approaches: first, we use low-resolution MODIS data for coal fire area analyses, which has only been undertaken by a few authors. Second, we analyse data from four different times of day (morning, afternoon, evening and predawn) and for three different bands (MODIS bands 20, 32 and a ratio thereof); and third, we use an unbiased automated algorithm for thermal anomaly extraction of local thermal anomalies. The MODIS data analysed stem from the years 2001 and 2005. In 2001, MODIS data were only been available from the platform TERRA as morning and evening data (around 1030 and 2200 h). In 2005, MODIS data were available from this platform as well as from the platform AQUA as afternoon and predawn data (around 0130 and 0200 h). Our analyses indicate that MODIS multidiurnal data, and especially bands 20, 32 and ratio bands thereof, have a high potential for the detection of coal fire zones and coal fire hot spot zones, as well as for regular thermal monitoring activities. However, the data are not suitable for a quantitative coal fire analysis concerning fire outline, fire temperature or fire classification into surface and subsurface fires. We used higher-resolution ASTER and LANDSAT data from 2005 and 2002 for general orientation and later comparison of thermal anomaly extraction results. We also used high-resolution Quickbird data for the characterization of individual anomalous thermal clusters. Comparisons demonstrate that even low-resolution thermal sensors such as MODIS can support coal fire detection and zonation into warm and very hot zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on ground temperature measurement, thermal anomalies induced by underground coal fires were extracted from airborne night-time 8-12.5 µ m, daytime 8-12.5 µ m, and daytime 3-5 µ m images by density slicing. The thermal anomalies extracted from these images had different sizes and were partially overlapped. Integration of the three processed images revealed detailed structures of the surface thermal anomalies. The temperature difference (Δ T ) between a threshold temperature and the background temperature can be taken as a criterion for the evaluation of detection capabilities of different thermal data. The Δ T s for night-time, daytime 8-12.5 µ m data and 3-5 µ m data are 2.7, 4.4 and 7.1°C, respectively. The detection capabilities for sub-pixel sized coal fires from different thermal data were evaluated by assuming these fires cause the equivalent spectral radiance as a full pixel thermal anomaly does. The 3-5 µ m data are more sensitive to sub-pixel-sized high-temperature (i.e. >165°C) thermal anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Open surface water across the globe is essential for many life forms and is an important source for human settlements, agriculture, and industry. The presence and variation in time and space is influenced by different natural conditions (e.g. climate, topography, geology) and human use (e.g. irrigation, flood protection). The information on the spatial and temporal distribution of open surface water is fundamental for many disciplines and is also required as an essential parameter for hydrological and climatological modelling. Here, we present a dataset derived from satellite earth observation, which is based on more than 6.3 million single MODIS products with a volume of approx. 300 TB. The resulting dataset reflects the situation of open surface water on a global scale for each day over the time period from 2003 to 2022 at a spatial resolution of 250 m. The frontal position of an ice shelf is an important parameter for ice dynamic modelling, the computation of mass fluxes, mapping glacier area change, calculating iceberg production rates and the estimation of ice discharge to the ocean. Until now, continuous and up-to-date information on Antarctic calving front locations is scarce due to the time-consuming manual delineation of fronts and the previously limited amount of suitable earth observation data. Here, we present IceLines, a novel data set on Antarctic ice shelf front positions to assess calving front change at an unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution. More than 19,400 calving front positions were automatically extracted creating dense inter- and intra-annual time series of calving front change for the era of Sentinel-1 (2014-today). The calving front time series can be accessed via the EOC GeoService hosted by DLR and is updated on a monthly basis. For the first time, the presented IceLines data set provides the possibility to easily include calving front dynamics in scientific studies and modelling to improve our understanding about ice sheet dynamics., (© 2023. Intensification of land use by humans has led to a homogenization of landscapes and decreasing resilience of ecosystems globally due to a loss of biodiversity, including the majority of forests. Biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) research has provided compelling evidence for a positive effect of biodiversity on ecosystem functions and services at the local (α-diversity) scale, but we largely lack empirical evidence on how the loss of between-patch β-diversity affects biodiversity and multifunctionality at the landscape scale (γ-diversity). Here, we present a novel concept and experimental framework for elucidating BEF patterns at α-, β-, and γ-scales in real landscapes at a forest management-relevant scale. We examine this framework using 22 temperate broadleaf production forests, dominated by Fagus sylvatica. In 11 of these forests, we manipulated the structure between forest patches by increasing variation in canopy cover and deadwood. We hypothesized that an increase in landscape heterogeneity would enhance the β-diversity of different trophic levels, as well as the β-functionality of various ecosystem functions. We will develop a new statistical framework for BEF studies extending across scales and incorporating biodiversity measures from taxonomic to functional to phylogenetic diversity using Hill numbers. We will further expand the Hill number concept to multifunctionality allowing the decomposition of γ-multifunctionality into α- and β-components. Combining this analytic framework with our experimental data will allow us to test how an increase in between patch heterogeneity affects biodiversity and multifunctionality across spatial scales and trophic levels to help inform and improve forest resilience under climate change. Such an integrative concept for biodiversity and functionality, including spatial scales and multiple aspects of diversity and multifunctionality as well as physical and environmental structure in forests, will go far beyond the current widely applied approach in forestry to increase resilience of future forests through the manipulation of tree species composition., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

The Indo-Gangetic river basins feature a wide range of climatic, topographic, and land cover characteristics providing a suitable setting for the exploration of multivariate time series. Here, we collocated a comprehensive feature space for these river basins including Earth observation time series on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), surface water area (SWA), and snow cover area (SCA) in combination with driving variables between December 2002 and November 2020. First, we evaluated changes using multi-faceted trend analyses. Second, we employed the causal discovery algorithm Peter and Clark Momentary Conditional Independence (PCMCI) to disentangle interactions within the feature space. PCMCI quantifies direct and indirect relationships between variables and has been rarely applied to remote sensing applications. The results showed that vegetation greening continues significantly. Irrigated croplands in the Indus basin indicated the highest trend magnitude (0.042 NDVI/decade -1 ). At annual and basin scale, positive trends were also identified for SWA in the Indus (837 km 2 /decade -1 ) and Ganges basin (677 km 2 /decade -1 ). Annual trends in SCA were insignificant at basin scale. Considering elevation zones, negative SCA trends were found in high altitudes of the Ganges and Brahmaputra river basins. Similarly, NDVI and SWA showed positive trends in high elevations. Furthermore, the causal analysis revealed that NDVI was controlled by water availability. SWA was directly influenced by river discharge and indirectly by precipitation. In high altitudes, SWA was controlled by SCA and temperature. Precipitation and temperature were identified as important drivers of SCA with spatio-temporal variations. With amplified climate change, the joint exploitation of time series will be of increasing importance to further enhance the understanding of land surface change and complex interplays across the spheres of the Earth system. Recently, locust outbreaks around the world have destroyed agricultural and natural vegetation and caused massive damage endangering food security. Unusual heavy rainfalls in habitats of the desert locust ( Schistocerca gregaria ) and lack of monitoring due to political conflicts or inaccessibility of those habitats lead to massive desert locust outbreaks and swarms migrating over the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, India and Pakistan. At the same time, swarms of the Moroccan locust ( Dociostaurus maroccanus ) in some Central Asian countries and swarms of the Italian locust ( Calliptamus italicus ) in Russia and China destroyed crops despite developed and ongoing monitoring and control measurements. These recent events underline that the risk and damage caused by locust pests is as present as ever and affects 100 million of human lives despite technical progress in locust monitoring, prediction and control approaches. Remote sensing has become one of the most important data sources in locust management. Since the 1980s, remote sensing data and applications have accompanied many locust management activities and contributed to an improved and more effective control of locust outbreaks and plagues. Recently, open-access remote sensing data archives as well as progress in cloud computing provide unprecedented opportunity for remote sensing-based locust management and research. Additionally, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems bring up new prospects for a more effective and faster locust control. Nevertheless, the full capacity of available remote sensing applications and possibilities have not been exploited yet. This review paper provides a comprehensive and quantitative overview of international research articles focusing on remote sensing application for locust management and research. We reviewed 110 articles published over the last four decades, and categorized them into different aspects and main research topics to summarize achievements and gaps for further research and application development. The results reveal a strong focus on three species-the desert locust, the migratory locust ( Locusta migratoria ), and the Australian plague locust ( Chortoicetes terminifera )-and corresponding regions of interest. There is still a lack of international studies for other pest species such as the Italian locust, the Moroccan locust, the Central American locust ( Schistocerca piceifrons ), the South American locust ( Schistocerca cancellata ), the brown locust ( Locustana pardalina ) and the red locust ( Nomadacris septemfasciata ). In terms of applied sensors, most studies utilized Advanced Very-High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre VEGETATION (SPOT-VGT), Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) as well as Landsat data focusing mainly on vegetation monitoring or land cover mapping. Application of geomorphological metrics as well as radar-based soil moisture data is comparably rare despite previous acknowledgement of their importance for locust outbreaks. Despite great advance and usage of available remote sensing resources, we identify several gaps and potential for future research to further improve the understanding and capacities of the use of remote sensing in supporting locust outbreak- research and management.
