IntroductionThe current correlative study investigates whether and to what extent school grades are related to competencies in adolescents with and without special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in inclusive secondary education.MethodsA sample of N = 2,998 adolescents with a mean age of 12 years were longitudinally assessed in German language and Mathematics in a nationwide project on inclusive schooling in Germany in 2018/19 (T1) and 2019/20 (T2) in secondary school. The hypothesis was that competencies and school grades should be significantly correlated in both adolescents with and without SEND, showing the reliability of school grades for either group.Results and discussionStatistical analyses showed (1) all adolescents improved their competencies independently of their SEND status while school grades were moderately stable over time, (2) more variability of competencies and school grades emerged only at the tail ends of the scales of fail and best scores, (3) correlations between competencies and grades were consistently higher in mathematics than in German language for both pupils with and without SEND indicating a more objective and reliable measure.

Background: Postoperative de novo atrial fibrillation (POAF) is one of the most frequently encountered complications following cardiac surgery. Despite the identification of several risk factors, the link between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and POAF has barely been examined. The objective of this prospective observational study was to determine whether severe SDB is associated with POAF in patients after elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. Study design and methods: The incidence and preoperative predictors of in-hospital POAF were assessed in 272 patients undergoing CABG surgery at the University Medical Center Regensburg (Germany). In-hospital POAF was detected by continuous telemetry-ECG monitoring and 12-lead resting ECGs within the first seven postoperative days. POAF that occurred after hospital discharge within 60 days post CABG surgery was classified as post-hospital POAF and was ascertained by standardized phone interviews together with the patients’ medical files, including routinely performed Holter-ECG monitoring at 60 days post CABG surgery. The night before surgery, portable SDB monitoring was used to assess the presence and type of severe SDB, defined by an apnea–hypopnea index ≥ 30/h. Results: The incidence of in-hospital POAF was significantly higher in patients with severe SDB compared to those without severe SDB (30% vs. 15%, p = 0.009). Patients with severe SDB suffered significantly more often from POAF at 60 days post CABG surgery compared to patients without severe SDB (14% vs. 5%, p = 0.042). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that severe SDB (odds ratio, OR [95% confidence interval, CI]: 2.23 [1.08; 4.61], p = 0.030), age ≥ 65 years (2.17 [1.04; 4.53], p = 0.038), and diabetes mellitus (2.27 [1.15; 4.48], p = 0.018) were significantly associated with in-hospital POAF. After additional adjustment for heart failure, the association between sleep apnea and postoperative atrial fibrillation was attenuated (1.99 [0.92; 4.31], p = 0.081). Conclusions: Amongst established risk factors, severe SDB was significantly associated with in-hospital POAF in patients undergoing CABG surgery. Whether SDB contributes to POAF independently of heart failure and whether risk for POAF may be alleviated by proper treatment of SDB merits further investigation.

The advent of additive manufacturing (AM) has enabled topological control of structures at the micrometer scale, transforming the properties of polymers for a variety of applications. Examples include tailored mechanical responses, acoustic properties, and thermal properties. Porous polymer materials are a class of materials used for shock and blast mitigation, yet they frequently possess a lack of structural order and are largely developed and evaluated via trial-and-error. Here, we demonstrate control of shockwave dissipation through interface-dominated structures prepared by AM using 2-photon polymerization. A fractal structure with voids, or free surfaces, arranged less than 100 μm apart, allows for rarefaction interactions on the timescale of the shockwave loading. Simulations and dynamic x-ray phase contrast imaging experiments show that fractal structures with interfaces assembled within a “critical” volume reduce shockwave stress and wave velocity by over an order of magnitude within the first unit cell.

Real-time national global positioning system (GPS) networks are being established in a number of countries for atmospheric sensing. The authors, in collaboration with participating universities, are developing one of these networks in the United States. The proposed network, named "SuomiNet" to honor meteorological satellite pioneer Verner Suomi, is funded by the US National Science Foundation to exploit the recently shown ability of ground-based GPS receivers to make thousands of accurate upper and lower atmospheric measurements per day. Phase delays induced in GPS signals by the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere can be measured with high precision simultaneously along a dozen or so GPS ray paths in the field of view. These delays can be converted into integrated water-vapor (if surface pressure data or estimates are available) and total electron content (TEC), along each GPS ray path. The resulting continuous, accurate, all-weather, real-time GPS moisture data will help advance university research in mesoscale modeling and data assimilation, severe weather, precipitation, cloud dynamics, regional climate and hydrology. Similarly, continuous, accurate, all-weather, real-time TEC data have applications in modeling and prediction of severe terrestrial and space weather, detection and forecasting of low-latitude ionospheric scintillation activity and geomagnetic storm effects at ionospheric mid-latitudes, and detection of ionospheric effects induced by a variety of geophysical events. SuomiNet data also have potential applications in coastal meteorology, providing ground truth for satellite radiometry, correction of synthetic aperture radar data for crustal deformation and topography studies, and detection of scintillation associated with atmospheric turbulence in the lower troposphere. In this paper we describe SuomiNet, its applications, and the larger opportunity to coordinate national real-time GPS networks to maximize their scientific and operational impact. © 2001 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
