This thesis presents a thermal study of the ALPHA-g cryostat at CERN. The thermal efficiency is characterised and thermal week points are identified. The results were obtained through analytic calculations, C++ script of programs and thermal steady-state simulations performed with ANSYS workbench 2020 R2. These models estimate heat flows and temperature distributions in components and the 2-phase systems of liquid and gaseous helium. In general, the heat loads are used to estimate the liquid helium (LHe) consumption by vaporisation. It is compared to a target consumption of 20 L h−1. Further, the gaseous helium (GHe) demand for internal cooling systems of radiation shields and vapour cooled leads (VCL) is determined. The ALPHA-g experiment studies the Baryon asymmetry of antimatter and matter by measuring the antihydrogen atomic mass. The ALPHA-g cryostat is only one subsystem of the experiment; its main purpose is to provide a cold LHe bath at 4 K to cool superconducting magnets and electrodes, in addition to cryopump an ultra-high vacuum chamber. Since LHe is present at cryogenic temperatures with a relatively low enthalpy of vaporisation (~21 kJ kg−1 at norm pressure), the cryostat contains a complex multi-layered structure to lower the incoming heat load. The thermal insulation of the LHe is achieved with an enclosing vacuum chamber with internal radiation shields and foils, as well as suitable component structures and material selection. Despite these measures to preserve the LHe, the apparatus is diathermic; some of the LHe evaporates and fills the upper section of the vessel with GHe. This creates a 2-phase system of liquid and gas in the helium-space. Most of the GHe is located in the tubular components ‘chimneys’ and ‘service tubes’ in the upper section of the cryostat. An evaluation of the thermal efficiency is carried out qualitatively in the context of ingoing heat loads and a resulting estimated LHe consumption. The total heat load entering helium-space is approximately 27 W. Due to the complex convective conditions, it could not be quantified how much of this heat load evaporates LHe and to what extend it increases the GHe enthalpy. However, a comparison of the theoretical values with measurements during a cold test allows an estimation. Approximately 18 W evaporate ~25 L h−1 of LHe. Simulations showed a thermal weak point at the chimneys with relevant heat conduction of ~8 W. The flexible bellows are identified as important thermal resistors. The temperature at the outer chimney wall is > 50 K for the most part. With a target radiation shield temperature of 50 K, the net direction of heat radiation is reversed as compared to the intended direction by design. The VCL influence this temperature the most. Analytical calculations determine that the VCL require a cooling gas mass flow of ~0.655 g s−1. This corresponds to an evaporating LHe volume flow of ~18.9 L h−1. It can be provided without additional boil-off. In comparison, the required evaporating LHe volume flow to cool the radiation shields is only ~1.3 L h−1. It corresponds to a net heat load onto the radiation shields of ~11 W. The target radiation shield temperature of 50 K can be evaluated as feasible but not necessary regarding the thermal efficiency of the cryostat. An increase up to ≤ 100 K is therefore recommended in case of cooling gas shortage. All determined heat flows take static gas inside the chimneys and service tubes into account. Analysis of this assumption showed little free convection in the upper chimney sections. In the service tubes, free convection might be relevant. It could be advised adding baffles here.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein iteratives Modellkonzept zur wirtschaftlichen Ausbau- und Einsatzoptimierung von Kraftwerken und Speichern in Stromerzeugungssystemen mit einem hohen Anteil an fluktuierender Einspeisung entwickelt. Die Aufgabe ist in Teilmodelle für Kraftwerks- und Speicherausbau gegliedert, welche jeweils als lineare Optimierungsprobleme formuliert sind. Ein weiteres Modell bestimmt die Zuverlässigkeit des Erzeugungssystems. Die durch den Speichereinsatz veränderte Fahrweise der Kraftwerke und die Zuverlässigkeit des variierten Systems werden in einer Iterationsschleife rückgekoppelt und ermöglichen somit erstmalig eine sukzessive Anpassung von Kraftwerks- und Speicherausbau. Als Leitgröße für die mindestens benötigte Kraftwerkskapazität dient ein gefordertes Zuverlässigkeitsniveau des Erzeugungssystems. In this thesis an iterative model concept is developed, which optimises the capacity additions and operation of future power plants and storage facilities in systems with an increasing share of fluctuating generation. The task is divided into sub-models; one for the extension of power plants and one for storage additions. Both are realised as linear optimisation problems. An additional model evaluates the reliability of the power system. In an iterative loop, the power plant dispatch influenced by the storage operation and the reliability of the changed system is fed back to the extension models. This novel methodology enables a gradual adaption of the power plant and storage extensions. The minimum capacity of power plants is determined by the required reliability level of the generation system.

Das in sich geschlossene Erdölsystem Bakken Formation im Untergrund des nordamerikanischen Williston Sediment Beckens ist eines der derzeit weltweit erfolgreichsten niedrigpermeablen Explorationsziele. Durch bisherige Explorationstätigkeiten und Forschungsarbeit ist es zu einem guten Verständnis der Formation und zu einer Fülle an Daten gekommen. Eine ganzheitliche Beschreibung der Prozesse, von der Entstehung im Muttergestein bis hin zu den produzierten Kohlenwasserstoffen, in diesem unkonventionellen Erdölsystems wurde bisher jedoch noch nicht entwickelt. Um das Verständnis für die Entstehung, Retention und Migration der Kohlenwasserstoffe im Bakken Erdölsystem weiter voranzubringen werden in dieser integrierten Studie Daten basierend auf den Methoden der Geochemie und Beckenmodellierung kombiniert. Durch das Zusammenführen von 1) Geländedaten, z.B. basierend auf Produktionstest, Bohrungsakten, 2) Laborergebnissen, z.B. geochemische Analysen von Kernproben und Ölen, 3) Numerische Simulation, z.B. Becken- und Erdölsystemmodellierung, ergibt sich somit eine bessere Charakterisierung des Bakken Erdölsystems. Basierend auf diesem Ansatz wurden die Entstehungs-, Retentions- und Expulsionsprozesse des Muttergesteins untersucht und diskutiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigten keine grundsätzlichen Unterschiede im Vergleich zu den Prozessen in einem konventionellen Kohlenwasserstoffsystem. Ungleich komplexer wird dieses unkonventionelle System im Hinblick auf das Migrationsverhalten. Der Vergleich der Eigenschaften und Zusammensetzung der produzierten Öle mit Modellierungsergebnissen, basierend auf speziell für die Bakken Formation angepasster Kinetiken zur Entstehung von Kohlenwasserstoffen, deutet darauf hin, dass ein wesentlich differenzierteres Migrationsverhalten in verschiedenen Teilen des Erdölsystems berücksichtigt werden muss. In Gebieten die strukturell stärker deformiert wurden ist ein wesentlich größerer Einfluss der Migration auf die Kohlenwasserstoffzusammensetzung zu erkennen als in weniger deformierten Gebieten. Basierend auf diesen Beobachtungen wird im Gebiet der Nesson Antiklinale eine höhere Migrationsaktivität erwartet. Dies könnte eine Erklärung für die Kohlenwasserstofflagerstätten im Norden des Williston Sediment Beckens sein, welche außerhalb des Bereichs liegen in denen die Reife des Muttergesteins ausreicht um Erdöl zu generieren. Zusätzlich ist auch in den strukturell weniger deformierten Flanken des Beckens eine der Schichtung folgende Migration zu erkennen. Durch die Analyse von aliphatischen und aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen und komplexeren Biomarkern kann nachgewiesen werden, dass das produzierte Öl einen höheren Reifegrad hat als die Bitumenextrakte des Bohrkerns aus der gleichen Bohrung. Dies gilt als Indiz für die Migration von Kohlenwasserstoffen aus tiefer liegenden, reiferen Bereichen in flacher liegende, weniger reife Bereiche. Zusätzlich wurden basierend auf den Ergebnissen der Beckenmodellierung weitere Hinweise gefunden, die auf eine Kohlenwasserstoffmigration hindeuten welche über die reifen Bereiche des Bakken Muttergesteins hinausgehen. Mit Bezug auf das Muttergestein können für die Bakken Formation keine größeren Unterschiede zu anderen konventionellen Erdölsystemen erkannt werden. Jedoch muss das Migrationsverhalten in dieser niedrigpermeablen Formation sehr differenziert betrachtet werden. Für eine kontinuierlich gesättigte Speichergesteinsschicht konnten keine Hinweise gefunden werden. The self-contained Bakken Formation petroleum system of the Williston Basin in central North America is one of the currently most active and successful low permeability hydrocarbon plays in the world. In contrast to conventional hydrocarbon plays where selected locations or fields are drained by a limited number of wells, the low permeability reservoir of the Bakken Formation has to be stimulated to enable production. This leads to a resource play appearance of the system in which every area with available hydrocarbons has to be drilled and produced individually. The research and exploration activities on the Bakken Formation in the last decades led to a good overall understanding of the formation and the collection of vast amounts of data. However, a holistic explanation for the unconventional resource play appearance of the Bakken Formation petroleum system has yet to be developed. In this integrated geochemistry and basin modeling study the generation, retention and migration of the hydrocarbons in the system is investigated based on data compiled from different sources. It is aimed to develop a consistent description of the Bakken Formation petroleum system by combining 1) field data, e.g. production data, well and drilling reports, 2) laboratory measurements, e.g. geochemical analysis of oil and core samples, and 3) numerical simulation, e.g. basin and petroleum system modeling. Based upon the integrated dataset the generation, retention and expulsion processes in the petroleum system can be analyzed and discussed. In general, a good agreement with the behavior, as described for conventional systems, was found. The system becomes more complex with respect to the migration behavior, as it can be inferred from diverse opinions described in the literature. Based on the comparison of the produced petroleum composition with the modeled output of PVT-compatible compositional generation kinetics it is deduced that more differentiated migration regimes have to be considered. For example in areas with greater structural deformation the influence of migration on the in-place hydrocarbon composition is stronger as in comparison to less disturbed areas in the basin. Thus, in the vicinity of the north-south trending Nesson anticline more active migration is expected, which may explain the accumulations in the north of the Williston Basin in locations beyond the areas of the mature source rock. Nonetheless, also on the structurally less influenced flanks of the basin an intra-formation up-dip migration was identified. Using aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, including biomarkers, it is demonstrated that the produced oil has a higher maturity fingerprint than the bitumen extracts of the cores in the same well locations, which is explained by a migration of hydrocarbons from deeper, more mature to up-dip, less mature areas. Additional evidence for hydrocarbon migration beyond the mature area of the Bakken source rock is presented on a basin-wide scale based on petroleum system modeling. Even though some input data with first order control on migration is not available in a resolution to capture the variability in the basin, the models are able to reproduce the subsurface hydrocarbon accumulations that are currently explored. Consequently, the Bakken Formation does not show greater differences with respect to the source related components of a conventional petroleum system. However, the migration in this low permeability formation requires further scrutiny, as a continuously saturated reservoir member is not evident from the available data.

Die Arbeit befasst sich mit der Bewegung von Oberflächeninseln unter Elektromigrationseinfluss im Rahmen eines Kontinuumsmodells, das mittels numerischer und analytischer Methoden untersucht wird. In dem kinetischen Regime, in dem der Massentransport ausschließlich entlang der Inselkante stattfindet, ergibt sich durch die Berücksichtigung der Anisotropie der Kristalloberfläche eine Vielfalt von Bewegungsformen, die neben schräg zum Feld laufenden Inselformen komplexes oszillatorisches Verhalten beinhaltet. Die dabei auftretenden Facetten-Orientierungen können mittels einer analytischen Theorie vorhergesagt werden. Es wird ferner ein Vergleich mit einem kinetischen Monte-Carlo-Modell durchgeführt, bei dem sich ähnliche Oszillationen zeigen, wie im Kontinuumsfall. Findet der Massentransport über Materialaustausch mit den Atomen auf der Terrasse statt, so kann gezeigt werden, dass im Fall einer Leerstelleninsel mit unendlich hoher Stufenrandbarriere die kreisförmigen stationären Lösungen immer linear stabil sind. Das mit dem Stabilitätsproblem verbundene Phänomen nicht-orthogonaler Eigenmoden wird ausführlich diskutiert. Numerische Untersuchungen für diesen Fall zeigen eine nichtlineare Instabilität, bei der ein Teil der Insel einen Finger bildet, der sich von der Insel ablöst.
