Search

Stellar tidal streams are a key tracer of galaxy evolution and have the potential to provide an indirect means for tracing dark matter. For the Local Group, many diffuse substructures have been identified and their link to galaxy evolution has been traced. However, an analysis of a larger sample is required to better probe the frequency and characteristics of these streams to verify the predictions of the Lambda-CDM model and its implementation in cosmological simulations. For that purpose, we are carrying out the first systematic survey of faint stellar debris from tidally disrupted dwarf satellites around nearby galaxies up to a distance of 100 Mpc. In this paper, we present a catalogue with the results of the first harvest of stellar tidal streams found by visual inspection in deep images of ~ 700 galaxies from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We include a photometric characterisation of the streams obtained by measuring their surface brightnesses and colours. We found a total of 63 streams in our sample at distances between 40 and 100 Mpc, including 59 which were not previously reported. We measured their average surface brightness for the grz bands, to be 28.35+/-0.20, 27.81+/-0.13 and 27.62+/-0.09 mag arcsec^-2, respectively. By applying a statistical analysis to our findings, we obtained a stream detection frequency of 9.1% +/- 1.1% , in agreement with previous studies. We identified stream progenitors in 5-14% of our stream sample, depending on the confidence level. The first catalogue of streams in the Local Universe presented here will be complemented by future stream surveys within the Stellar Stream Legacy Survey. In this work we have learnt that the faintest measured stream surface brightness can be significantly brighter than the surface brightness limit of an image measured at pixel level, mainly due to correlated noise present in the images., Comment: 20 pages with 16 figures, plus Appendices: 27 pages in total

Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) are stars which have been ejected from the Galactic Centre (GC) at velocities of up to a few thousand km/s. They are tracers of the Galactic potential and can be used to infer properties of the GC, such as the initial-mass function and assembly history. HVSs are rare, however, with only about a dozen promising candidates discovered so far. In this work we make use of a novel, highly efficient method to identify new HVS candidates in Gaia. This method uses the nearly radial trajectories of HVSs to infer their distances and velocities based on their position and Gaia proper motion alone. Through comparison of inferred distances with Gaia parallaxes and photometry we identified 600 HVS candidates with G<20 including the previously discovered S5-HVS1, out of which we obtained ground-based follow-up observations for 196 stars. As we found no new HVSs based on their radial velocity, we used detailed HVS ejection simulations to significantly improve previous HVS ejection rate constraints. In particular, the ejection rate of HVSs more massive than 1 $\mathrm{M_\odot}$ cannot be higher than $10^{-5}$ yr$^{-1}$ at $2\sigma$ significance. Additionally, we predict that there are 5-45 unbound HVSs in the complete Gaia catalogue ($1\sigma$ interval), most of which will be main-sequence stars of a few M$_\odot$ at heliocentric distances of tens to hundreds of kpc. By comparing our results to literature HVS candidates, we find an indication of either a time-dependent ejection rate of HVSs or a non-GC origin of previously identified HVS candidates., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Weak gravitational lensing convergence peaks, the local maxima in weak lensing convergence maps, have been shown to contain valuable cosmological information complementary to commonly used two-point statistics. To exploit the full power of weak lensing for cosmology, we must model baryonic feedback processes because these reshape the matter distribution on non-linear and mildly non-linear scales. We study the impact of baryonic physics on the number density of weak lensing peaks using the FLAMINGO cosmological hydrodynamical simulation suite. We generate ray-traced full-sky convergence maps mimicking the characteristics of a Stage IV weak lensing survey. We compare the number densities of peaks in simulations that have been calibrated to reproduce the observed galaxy mass function and cluster gas fraction or to match a shifted version of these, and that use either thermally driven or jet AGN feedback. We show that the differences induced by realistic baryonic feedback prescriptions (typically $5 - 30\%$ for $\kappa = 0.1 - 0.4$) are smaller than those induced by reasonable variations in cosmological parameters ($20 - 60\%$ for $\kappa = 0.1 - 0.4$) but must be modeled carefully to obtain unbiased results. The reasons behind these differences can be understood by considering the impact of feedback on halo masses, or by considering the impact of different cosmological parameters on the halo mass function. We report on the discovery of a significant and compact over-density of old and metal-poor stars in the KiDS survey (data release 4). The discovery is confirmed by deeper HSC-SSC data revealing the old Main Sequence Turn-Off of a stellar system located at a distance from the sun of $D_{\sun}=145^{+14}_{-13}$~kpc in the direction of the Sextans constellation. The system has absolute integrated magnitude ($M_V=-3.9^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$), half-light radius ($r_h=193^{+61}_{-46}$~pc), and ellipticity ($e=0.46^{+0.11}_{-0.15}$) typical of Ultra Faint Dwarf galaxies (UFDs). The central surface brightness is near the lower limits of known local dwarf galaxies of similar integrated luminosity, as expected for stellar systems that escaped detection until now. The distance of the newly found system suggests that it is likely a satellite of our own Milky Way, consequently, we tentatively baptise it Sextans~II (KiDS-UFD-1)., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. The Gaia mission has provided us full astrometric solutions for over 1.5B sources. However, only the brightest 34M of those have radial velocity measurements. As a proof of concept, this paper aims to close that gap, by obtaining radial velocity estimates from the low-resolution BP/RP spectra that Gaia now provides. These spectra are currently published for about 220M sources, with this number increasing to the full $\sim 2$B Gaia sources with Gaia Data Release 4. To obtain the radial velocity measurements, we fit Gaia BP/RP spectra with models based on a grid of synthetic spectra, with which we obtain the posterior probability on the radial velocity for each object. Our measured velocities show systematic biases that depend mainly on colours and magnitudes of stars. We correct for these effects by using external catalogues of radial velocity measurements. We present in this work a catalogue of about 6.4M sources with our most reliable radial velocity measurements and uncertainties $<300$ km s$^{-1}$ obtained from the BP/RP spectra. About 23% of these have no previous radial velocity measurement in Gaia RVS. Furthermore, we provide an extended catalogue containing all 125M sources for which we were able to obtain radial velocity measurements. The latter catalogue, however, also contains a fraction of measurements for which the reported radial velocities and uncertainties are inaccurate. Although typical uncertainties in the catalogue are significantly higher compared to those obtained with precision spectroscopy instruments, the number of potential sources for which this method can be applied is orders of magnitude higher than any previous radial velocity catalogue. This paper performs the first cosmological parameter analysis of the KiDS-1000 data with second- and third-order shear statistics. This work builds on a series of papers that describe the roadmap to third-order shear statistics. We derive and test a combined model of the second-order shear statistic, namely the COSEBIs and the third-order aperture mass statistics $\langle M_\mathrm{ap}^3\rangle$ in a tomographic set-up. We validate our pipeline with $N$-body simulations that mock the fourth Kilo Degree survey data release. To model the second- and third-order statistics, we use the latest version of \textsc{HMcode2020} for the power spectrum and \textsc{BiHalofit} for the bispectrum. Furthermore, we use an analytic description to model intrinsic alignments and hydro-dynamical simulations to model the effect of baryonic feedback processes. Lastly, we decreased the dimension of the data vector significantly by considering for the $\langle M_\mathrm{ap}^3\rangle$ part of the data vector only equal smoothing radii, making a data analysis of the fourth Kilo Degree survey data release using a combined analysis of COSEBIs third-order shear statistic possible. We first validate the accuracy of our modelling by analysing a noise-free mock data vector assuming the KiDS-1000 error budget, finding a shift in the maximum-a-posterior of the matter density parameter $\Delta \Omega_m< 0.02\, \sigma_{\Omega_m}$ and of the structure growth parameter $\Delta S_8 < 0.05\, \sigma_{S_8}$. Lastly, we performed the first KiDS-1000 cosmological analysis using a combined analysis of second- and third-order shear statistics, where we constrained $\Omega_m=0.248^{+0.062}_{-0.055}$ and $S_8=\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_m/0.3}=0.772\pm0.022$. The geometric average on the errors of $\Omega_\mathrm{m}$ and $S_8$ of the combined statistics increased compared to the second-order statistic by 2.2., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures

We present refined cosmological parameter constraints derived from a cosmic shear analysis of the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000). Our main improvements include enhanced galaxy shape measurements made possible by an updated version of the lensfit code and improved shear calibration achieved with a newly developed suite of multi-band image simulations. Additionally, we incorporated recent advancements in cosmological inference from the joint Dark Energy Survey Year 3 and KiDS-1000 cosmic shear analysis. Assuming a spatially flat standard cosmological model, we constrain $S_8\equiv\sigma_8(\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5} = 0.776_{-0.027-0.003}^{+0.029+0.002}$, where the second set of uncertainties accounts for the systematic uncertainties within the shear calibration. These systematic uncertainties stem from minor deviations from realism in the image simulations and the sensitivity of the shear measurement algorithm to the morphology of the galaxy sample. Despite these changes, our results align with previous KiDS studies and other weak lensing surveys, and we find a ${\sim}2.3\sigma$ level of tension with the Planck cosmic microwave background constraints on $S_8$., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, minor revisions to match the final accepted version

We present weak gravitational lensing measurements of a sample of 157 clusters within the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS), detected with a $>5\sigma$ thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) signal by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). Using a halo-model approach we constrain the average total cluster mass, $M_{\rm WL}$, accounting for the ACT cluster selection function of the full sample. We find that the SZ cluster mass estimate $M_{\rm SZ}$, which was calibrated using X-ray observations, is biased with $M_{\rm SZ}/M_{\rm WL} = (1-b_{\rm SZ}) = 0.65\pm 0.05$. Separating the sample into six mass bins, we find no evidence of a strong mass-dependency for the mass bias, $(1-b_{\rm SZ})$. Adopting this ACT-KiDS SZ mass-calibration would bring the Planck SZ cluster count into agreement with the counts expected from the {\it Planck} cosmic microwave background $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model, although it should be noted that the cluster sample considered in this work has a lower average mass $M_{\rm SZ, uncor} = 3.64 \times 10^{14} M_{\odot}$ compared to the Planck cluster sample which has an average mass in the range $M_{\rm SZ, uncor} = (5.5-8.5) \times 10^{14} M_{\odot}$, depending on the sub-sample used., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Galaxy shear - cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing convergence cross-correlations contain additional information on cosmology to auto-correlations. While being immune to certain systematic effects, they are affected by the galaxy intrinsic alignments (IA). This may be responsible for the reported low lensing amplitude of the galaxy shear $\times$ CMB convergence cross-correlations, compared to the standard Planck $\Lambda$CDM (cosmological constant and cold dark matter) cosmology prediction. In this work, we investigate how IA affects the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) galaxy lensing shear - Planck CMB lensing convergence cross-correlation and compare it to previous treatments with or without IA taken into consideration. More specifically, we compare marginalization over IA parameters and the IA self-calibration (SC) method (with additional observables defined only from the source galaxies) and prove that SC can efficiently break the degeneracy between the CMB lensing amplitude $A_{\rm lens}$ and the IA amplitude $A_{\rm IA}$. We further investigate how different systematics affect the resulting $A_{\rm IA}$ and $A_{\rm lens}$, and validate our results with the MICE2 simulation. We find that by including the SC method to constrain IA, the information loss due to the degeneracy between CMB lensing and IA is strongly reduced. The best-fit values are $A_{\rm lens}=0.84^{+0.22}_{-0.22}$ and $A_{\rm IA}=0.60^{+1.03}_{-1.03}$, while different angular scale cuts can affect $A_{\rm lens}$ by $\sim10\%$. We show that appropriate treatment of the boost factor, cosmic magnification, and photometric redshift modeling is important for obtaining the correct IA and cosmological results., Comment: match version accepted by A&A

We present SKiLLS, a suite of multi-band image simulations for the weak lensing analysis of the complete Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), dubbed KiDS-Legacy analysis. The resulting catalogues enable joint shear and redshift calibration, enhancing the realism and hence accuracy over previous efforts. To create a large volume of simulated galaxies with faithful properties and to a sufficient depth, we integrated cosmological simulations with high-quality imaging observations. We also improved the realism of simulated images by allowing the point spread function (PSF) to differ between CCD images, including stellar density variations and varying noise levels between pointings. Using realistic variable shear fields, we accounted for the impact of blended systems at different redshifts. Although the overall correction is minor, we found a clear redshift-bias correlation in the blending-only variable shear simulations, indicating the non-trivial impact of this higher-order blending effect. We also explored the impact of the PSF modelling errors and found a small yet noticeable effect on the shear bias. Finally, we conducted a series of sensitivity tests, including changing the input galaxy properties. We conclude that our fiducial shape measurement algorithm, lensfit, is robust within the requirements of lensing analyses with KiDS. As for future weak lensing surveys with tighter requirements, we suggest further investments in understanding the impact of blends at different redshifts, improving the PSF modelling algorithm and developing the shape measurement method to be less sensitive to the galaxy properties., Comment: 28 pages, 31 figures, 2 tables, minor revisions to match the final accepted version

We present constraints on the flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model through a joint analysis of galaxy abundance, galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing observables with the Kilo-Degree Survey. Our theoretical model combines a flexible conditional stellar mass function, to describe the galaxy-halo connection, with a cosmological N-body simulation-calibrated halo model to describe the non-linear matter field. Our magnitude-limited bright galaxy sample combines 9-band optical-to-near-infrared photometry with an extensive and complete spectroscopic training sample to provide accurate redshift and stellar mass estimates. Our faint galaxy sample provides a background of accurately calibrated lensing measurements. We constrain the structure growth parameter $S_8=\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_{\mathrm{m}}/0.3}=0.773^{+0.028}_{-0.030}$, and the matter density parameter $\Omega_{\mathrm{m}}=0.290^{+0.021}_{-0.017}$. The galaxy-halo connection model adopted in the work is shown to be in agreement with previous studies. Our constraints on cosmological parameters are comparable to, and consistent with, joint $3\times2{\mathrm{pt}}$ clustering-lensing analyses that additionally include a cosmic shear observable. This analysis therefore brings attention to the significant constraining power in the often-excluded non-linear scales for galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing observables. By adopting a theoretical model that accounts for non-linear halo bias, halo exclusion, scale-dependent galaxy bias and the impact of baryon feedback, this work demonstrates the potential and a way forward to include non-linear scales in cosmological analyses. Context. Stellar tidal streams are the result of tidal interactions between a central galaxy and lower mass systems like satellite galaxies or globular clusters. For the Local Group, many diffuse substructures have been identified and their link to the galaxy evolution has been traced. However it cannot be assumed that the Milky Way or M31 are representative of their galaxy class, and a larger sample of analogue galaxies beyond the Local Group is required to be able to generalise the underlying theory. Aims. We want to characterise photometrically the stellar streams around Milky Way analogues in the local Universe with the goal to deepen our understanding of the interaction between host and satellite galaxies, and ultimately of the galaxy formation and evolution processes. Methods. In the present work we identified and analysed stellar tidal streams around Milky Way analogue galaxies from the SAGA sample, using deep images of the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys (for this sample, we obtain a range of r-band surface brightness limit between 27.8 and 29 mag / arcsec2). We measure the surface brightness and colours of the detected streams using GNU Astronomy Utilities software. Results. We identified 16 new stellar tidal streams around Milky Way analogue galaxies at distances between 25 and 40 Mpc. Applying statistical analysis to our findings for the SAGA II galaxy sample, we obtained a frequency of 12.2% +/- 2.4% for stellar streams. We measured surface brightness and colours of the detected streams, and the comparison to the dwarf satellite galaxies population around galaxies belonging to the same SAGA sample shows that the mean colour of the streams is 0.20 mag redder than that of the SAGA satellites; also, the streams are, in average, 0.057 +/- 0.021 mag redder that their progenitor, for those cases when a likely progenitor could be identified., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Context. Weak lensing and clustering statistics beyond two-point functions can capture non-Gaussian information about the matter density field, thereby improving the constraints on cosmological parameters relative to the mainstream methods based on correlation functions and power spectra. Aims. This paper presents a cosmological analysis of the fourth data release of the Kilo Degree Survey based on the density split statistics, which measures the mean shear profiles around regions classified according to foreground densities. The latter is constructed from a bright galaxy sample, which we further split into red and blue samples, allowing us to probe their respective connection to the underlying dark matter density. Methods. We use the state-of-the-art model of the density splitting statistics and validate its robustness against mock data infused with known systematic effects such as intrinsic galaxy alignment and baryonic feedback. Results. After marginalising over the photometric redshift uncertainty and the residual shear calibration bias, we measure for the full KiDS-bright sample a structure growth parameter of $S_8 = \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_\mathrm{m}/0.3} = 0.74^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$ that is competitive to and consistent with two-point cosmic shear results, a matter density of $\Omega_\mathrm{m} = 0.28 \pm 0.02$, and a constant galaxy bias of $b = 1.32^{+0.12}_{-0.10}$., Comment: 18 pages, 23 Figures

In Galaxy And Mass Assembly Data Release 4 (GAMA DR4), we make available our full spectroscopic redshift sample. This includes 248682 galaxy spectra, and, in combination with earlier surveys, results in 330542 redshifts across five sky regions covering ~250deg^2. The redshift density, is the highest available over such a sustained area, has exceptionally high completeness (95 per cent to r_KIDS=19.65mag), and is well suited for the study of galaxy mergers, galaxy groups, and the low redshift (z<0.25) galaxy population. DR4 includes 32 value-added tables or Data Management Units (DMUs) that provide a number of measured and derived data products including GALEX, ESO KiDS, ESO VIKING, WISE and Herschel Space Observatory imaging. Within this release, we provide visual morphologies for 15330 galaxies to z<0.08, photometric redshift estimates for all 18million objects to r_KIDS~25mag, and stellar velocity dispersions for 111830 galaxies. We conclude by deriving the total galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) and its sub-division by morphological class (elliptical, compact-bulge and disc, diffuse-bulge and disc, and disc only). This extends our previous measurement of the total GSMF down to 10^6.75 M_sol h^-2_70 and we find a total stellar mass density of rho_*=(2.97+/-0.04)x10^8 M_sol h_70 Mpc^-3 or Omega_*=(2.17+/-0.03)x10^-3 h^-1_70. We conclude that at z<0.1, the Universe has converted 4.9+/-0.1 per cent of the baryonic mass implied by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis into stars that are gravitationally bound within the galaxy population., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. This report is the result of a joint discussion between the Rubin and Euclid scientific communities. The work presented in this report was focused on designing and recommending an initial set of Derived Data products (DDPs) that could realize the science goals enabled by joint processing. All interested Rubin and Euclid data rights holders were invited to contribute via an online discussion forum and a series of virtual meetings. [Abridged] Aims. The lowest-mass galaxies, ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, promise unparalleled constraints on how feedback regulates galaxy formation, and on the small-scale matter power spectrum. Their inner dark-matter densities can also be used to constrain dark-matter models. In this paper, we present 201 new stellar line-of-sight velocities from the MUSE-Faint survey for the (ultra-)faint dwarf galaxies Antlia B, Leo T, Hydra II, and Grus 1. Combining these with literature data, we obtain the tightest constraints to date on their dark-matter halo masses and inner dark-matter densities. Methods. We use the Jeans equations implemented in CJAM to model the density profiles and constrain the presence of dark-matter cores and solitons (a prediction of fuzzy dark-matter models). Further modelling is done with GravSphere to test the influence of the choice of modelling tool. We calculate masses, concentrations, and circular velocities from the profiles, include results for Eridanus 2 from our previous work, and compare these properties to theoretical scaling relations, deriving constraints on tidal stripping in the process. Results. We find that dark-matter cores as large as those of more massive dwarf galaxies are ruled out for our galaxies (core radius $r_\mathrm{c} < 66$-$95\,\mathrm{pc}$ at the 68% confidence level). We constrain the soliton radii to $r_\mathrm{sol} < 13$-$112\,\mathrm{pc}$ (68% confidence level). We find that the galaxies are consistent with not having been significantly tidally stripped within their half-light radii. The virial masses and concentrations are sensitive to the choice of dynamical modelling tool: GravSphere produces results consistent with $M_{200} \sim 10^9\,M_\odot$, as expected from models in which ultra-faint dwarf galaxies are re-ionization fossils, while CJAM prefers haloes that are less massive., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 8 tables, excluding appendices. One probe for systematic effects in gravitational lensing surveys is the presence of so-called B-modes in the cosmic shear two-point correlation functions \xi_\pm(\vt), since lensing is expected to produce only E-mode shear. Furthermore, there exist ambiguous modes which can not uniquely be assigned to either E- or B-mode shear. We derive explicit equations for the pure-mode shear correlation functions \xi_\pm^E/B(\vt) and their ambiguous components \xi_\pm^amb(\vt), that can be derived from the measured \xi_\pm(\vt) on a finite angular interval \tmin\le\vt\le\tmax, such that the latter can be decomposed uniquely into pure-mode functions as \xi_+=\xi_+^E+\xi_+^B+\xi_+^amb and \xi_-=\xi_-^E-\xi_-^B+\xi_-^amb. The derivation is obtained by defining a new set of COSEBIs, for which explicit relations are obtained, and which yields a smaller covariance between COSEBI modes. We derive the relation between \xi_\pm^E/B/amb and the underlying E-/B-mode power spectra. The pure-mode correlation functions can provide a diagnostics of systematics in configuration space. We then apply our results to SLICS simulations and the KiDS-1000 cosmic shear data, calculate the new COSEBIs and the pure-mode correlation functions, as well as the corresponding covariances, and show that the new statistics fit equally well to the best-fitting cosmological model as the previous KiDS-1000 analysis and recovers the same level of (insignificant) B-modes. We also consider in some detail the ambiguous modes at first- and second-order level, finding some surprising results; for example, the shear field of a point mass, when cut along a line through the center, can not be ascribed uniquely to an E-mode shear and is thus ambiguous, and the shear correlation functions resulting from a random ensemble of point masses, when measured over a finite angular range, correspond to an ambiguous mode., Comment: 24 pages, A&A, in press

As modern-day precision cosmology aims for statistical uncertainties of the percent level or lower, it becomes increasingly important to reconsider estimator assumptions at each step of the process, and their consequences on the statistical variability of the scientific results. We compare $L^1$ regression statistics to the weighted mean, the canonical $L^2$ method based on Gaussian assumptions, for inference of the weak gravitational shear signal from a catalog of background ellipticity measurements around a sample of clusters, in many recent analyses a standard step in the process. We use the shape measurements of background sources around 6925 AMICO clusters detected in the KiDS 3rd data release. We investigate the robustness of our results and the dependence of uncertainties on the signal-to-noise ratios of the background source detections. Using a halo model approach, we derive lensing masses from the estimated excess surface density profiles. The highly significant shear signal allows us to study the scaling relation between the $r$-band cluster luminosity $L_{200}$, and the derived lensing mass $M_{200}$. We show the results of the scaling relations derived in 13 bins in $L_{200}$, with a tightly constrained power law slope of $\sim 1.24\pm 0.08$. We observe a small, but significant relative bias of a few percent in the recovered excess surface density profiles between the two regression methods, which translates to a $1\sigma$ difference in $M_{200}$. The efficiency of $L^1$ is at least that of the weighted mean, relatively increasing with higher signal-to-noise shape measurements. Our results indicate the relevance of optimizing the estimator for infering the gravitational shear from a distribution of background ellipticities. We conduct a pseudo-$C_\ell$ analysis of the tomographic cross-correlation between 1000 deg$^2$ of weak lensing data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000) and the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect measured by Planck and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). Using HMx, a halo-model-based approach that consistently models the gas, star, and dark matter components, we are able to derive constraints on both cosmology and baryon feedback for the first time from these data, marginalising over redshift uncertainties, intrinsic alignment of galaxies, and contamination by the cosmic infrared background (CIB). We find our results to be insensitive to the CIB, while intrinsic alignment provides a small but significant contribution to the lensing--tSZ cross-correlation. The cosmological constraints are consistent with those of other low-redshift probes and prefer strong baryon feedback. The inferred amplitude of the lensing--tSZ cross-correlation signal, which scales as $\sigma_8(\Omega_\mathrm{m}/0.3)^{0.2}$, is low by $\sim 2\,\sigma$ compared to the primary cosmic microwave background constraints by Planck. The lensing--tSZ measurements are then combined with pseudo-$C_\ell$ measurements of KiDS-1000 cosmic shear into a novel joint analysis, accounting for the full cross-covariance between the probes, providing tight cosmological constraints by breaking parameter degeneracies inherent to both probes. The joint analysis gives an improvement of 40% on the constraint of $S_8=\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_\mathrm{m}/0.3}$ over cosmic shear alone, while providing constraints on baryon feedback consistent with hydrodynamical simulations, demonstrating the potential of such joint analyses with baryonic tracers such as the tSZ effect. We constrain the luminosity and redshift dependence of the intrinsic alignment (IA) of a nearly volume-limited sample of luminous red galaxies selected from the fourth public data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000). To measure the shapes of the galaxies, we used two complementary algorithms, finding consistent IA measurements for the overlapping galaxy sample. The global significance of IA detection across our two independent luminous red galaxy samples, with our favoured method of shape estimation, is $\sim10.7\sigma$. We find no significant dependence with redshift of the IA signal in the range $0.2

One of the most promising tracers of the Galactic potential in the halo region are stellar streams. However, individual stream fits can be limited by systematic biases. To study these individual stream systematics, we fit streams in Milky Way-like galaxies from FIRE cosmological galaxy formation simulations with an analytic gravitational potential by maximizing the clustering of stream stars in action space. We show that for coherent streams the quality of the constraints depends on the orbital phase of the observed stream stars, despite the fact that the phase information is discarded in action-clustering methods. Streams on intermediate phases give the most accurate results, whereas pericentre streams can be highly biased. This behaviour is tied to the amount of correlation present between positions and momenta in each stream's data: weak correlation in pericentre streams prohibits efficient differentiation between potentials, while strong correlation in intermediate streams promotes it. Although simultaneous fitting of multiple streams is generally prescribed as the remedy to combat individual stream biases, we find that combining multiple pericentric streams is not enough to yield a bias-free result. We finally show that adopting the two-component St\"ackel model does not fundamentally induce a biased mass estimate. With our full data set of two multi-wrap streams, we recovered the true rotation curve of the simulated galaxy within $12\%$ over the entire range of radii covered by our set of stars (10 - 176 kpc) and within $6.5\%$ between the 5 and 95-percentile distance range (23 - 109 kpc)., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures. We present measurements of the radial gravitational acceleration around isolated galaxies, comparing the expected gravitational acceleration given the baryonic matter with the observed gravitational acceleration, using weak lensing measurements from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. These measurements extend the radial acceleration relation (RAR) by 2 decades into the low-acceleration regime beyond the outskirts of the observable galaxy. We compare our RAR measurements to the predictions of two modified gravity (MG) theories: MOND and Verlinde's emergent gravity. We find that the measured RAR agrees well with the MG predictions. In addition, we find a difference of at least $6\sigma$ between the RARs of early- and late-type galaxies (split by S\'{e}rsic index and $u-r$ colour) with the same stellar mass. Current MG theories involve a gravity modification that is independent of other galaxy properties, which would be unable to explain this behaviour. The difference might be explained if only the early-type galaxies have significant ($M_{gas} \approx M_*$) circumgalactic gaseous haloes. The observed behaviour is also expected in $\Lambda$CDM models where the galaxy-to-halo mass relation depends on the galaxy formation history. We find that MICE, a $\Lambda$CDM simulation with hybrid halo occupation distribution modelling and abundance matching, reproduces the observed RAR but significantly differs from BAHAMAS, a hydrodynamical cosmological galaxy formation simulation. Our results are sensitive to the amount of circumgalactic gas; current observational constraints indicate that the resulting corrections are likely moderate. Measurements of the lensing RAR with future cosmological surveys will be able to further distinguish between MG and $\Lambda$CDM models if systematic uncertainties in the baryonic mass distribution around galaxies are reduced., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, published in A&A

We carry out a multi-probe self-consistency test of the flat $\Lambda$CDM model with the aim of exploring potential causes of the reported tensions between high- and low-redshift cosmological observations. We divide the model into two theory regimes determined by the smooth background (geometry) and the evolution of matter density fluctuations (growth), each governed by an independent set of Lambda Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) cosmological parameters. This extended model is constrained by a combination of weak gravitational lensing measurements from the Kilo-Degree Survey, galaxy clustering signatures extracted from Sloan Digital Sky Survey campaigns and the Six-Degree Field Galaxy Survey, and the angular baryon acoustic scale and the primordial scalar fluctuation power spectrum measured in $\textit{Planck}$ cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. We find strong consistency between the geometry and growth parameters, and with the posterior of standard $\Lambda$CDM analysis. Tension in the amplitude of matter density fluctuations as measured by the parameter $S_8$ persists at around 3$\sigma$, with a $1.5\,\%$ constraint of $S_8 = 0.776_{-0.008}^{+0.016}$ for the combined probes. We also observe a less significant preference (at least $2\sigma$) for higher values of the Hubble constant, $H_0 = 70.5^{+0.7}_{-1.5}\,{\rm km\, s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$, as well as for lower values of the total matter density parameter $\Omega_{\rm{m}} = 0.289^{+0.007}_{-0.005}$ compared to the full $\textit{Planck}$ analysis. We constrain the redshift dependence of gas pressure bias $\left\langle b_{y} P_{\mathrm{e}}\right\rangle$ (bias-weighted average electron pressure), which characterises the thermodynamics of intergalactic gas, through a combination of cross-correlations between galaxy positions and the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect, as well as galaxy positions and the gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The galaxy sample is from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). The tSZ $y$ map and the CMB lensing map are from the {\textit{Planck}} 2015 and 2018 data releases, respectively. The measurements are performed in five redshift bins with $z\lesssim1$. With these measurements, combining galaxy-tSZ and galaxy-CMB lensing cross-correlations allows us to break the degeneracy between galaxy bias and gas pressure bias, and hence constrain them simultaneously. In all redshift bins, the best-fit values of $\bpe$ are at a level of $\sim 0.3\, \mathrm{meV/cm^3}$ and increase slightly with redshift. The galaxy bias is consistent with unity in all the redshift bins. Our results are not sensitive to the non-linear details of the cross-correlation, which are smoothed out by the {\textit{Planck}} beam. Our measurements are in agreement with previous measurements as well as with theoretical predictions. We also show that our conclusions are not changed when CMB lensing is replaced by galaxy lensing, which shows the consistency of the two lensing signals despite their radically different redshift ranges. We present measurements of $f_h$, the ratio of the aligned components of the projected halo and galaxy ellipticities, for a sample of central galaxies using weak gravitational lensing data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). Using a lens galaxy shape estimation that is more sensitive to outer galaxy regions, we find $f_{\rm h}=0.50\pm0.20$ for our full sample and $f_{\rm h}=0.55\pm0.19$ for an intrinsically red (and therefore higher stellar-mass) sub-sample, rejecting the hypothesis of round halos and/or galaxies being un-aligned with their parent halo at $2.5\sigma$ and $2.9\sigma$, respectively. We quantify the 93.4% purity of our central galaxy sample using numerical simulations and overlapping spectroscopy from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly survey. This purity ensures that the interpretation of our measurements is not complicated by the presence of a significant fraction of satellite galaxies. Restricting our central galaxy ellipticity measurement to the inner isophotes, we find $f_{\rm h}=0.34\pm0.17$ for our red sub-sample, suggesting that the outer galaxy regions are more aligned with their dark matter halos compared to the inner regions. Our results are in agreement with previous studies and suggest that lower mass halos are rounder and/or less aligned with their host galaxy than samples of more massive galaxies, studied in galaxy groups and clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Aims. We use stellar line-of-sight velocities to constrain the dark matter-density profile of Eridanus 2, an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy ($M_\mathrm{V} = -7.1$, $M_* \approx 9 \times 10^4\,M_\odot$). We furthermore derive constraints on fundamental properties of self-interacting and fuzzy dark matter scenarios. Methods. We present new observations of Eridanus 2 from MUSE-Faint, a survey of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies with MUSE on the Very Large Telescope, and determine line-of-sight velocities for stars inside the half-light radius. Combined with literature data, we have 92 stellar tracers out to twice the half-light radius. We constrain models of cold dark matter, self-interacting dark matter, and fuzzy dark matter with these tracers, using CJAM and pyGravSphere for the dynamical analysis. Results. We find substantial evidence for cold dark matter over self-interacting dark matter and weak evidence for fuzzy dark matter over cold dark matter. We find a virial mass $M_{200} \sim 10^8\,M_\odot$ and astrophysical factors $J(\alpha_\mathrm{c}^J) \sim 10^{11}\,M_\odot^2\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-5}$ and $D(\alpha_\mathrm{c}^D) \sim 10^2$-$10^{2.5}\,M_\odot\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2}$. We do not resolve a core ($r_\mathrm{c} < 47\,\mathrm{pc}$, 68-% level) or soliton ($r_\mathrm{sol} < 7.2\,\mathrm{pc}$, 68-% level). These limits are equivalent to an effective self-interaction coefficient $f\Gamma < 2.2 \times 10^{-29}\,\mathrm{cm}^3\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\,\mathrm{eV}^{-1}\,c^2$ and a fuzzy-dark-matter particle mass $m_\mathrm{a} > 4.0 \times 10^{-20}\,\mathrm{eV}\,c^{-2}$. The constraint on self-interaction is complementary to those from gamma-ray searches. The constraint on fuzzy-dark-matter particle mass is inconsistent with those obtained for larger dwarf galaxies, suggesting that the flattened density profiles of those galaxies are not caused by fuzzy dark matter. We present constraints on extensions to the flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model by varying the spatial curvature $\Omega_K$, the sum of the neutrino masses $\sum m_\nu$, the dark energy equation of state parameter $w$, and the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity $f_{R0}$ parameter. With the combined $3\times2$pt measurements of cosmic shear from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), galaxy clustering from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), and galaxy-galaxy lensing from the overlap between KiDS-1000, BOSS, and the spectroscopic 2-degree Field Lensing Survey (2dFLenS), we find results that are fully consistent with a flat $\Lambda$CDM model with $\Omega_K=0.011^{+0.054}_{-0.057}$, $\sum m_\nu<1.76$ eV (95% CL), and $w=-0.99^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$. The $f_{R0}$ parameter is unconstrained in our fully non-linear $f(R)$ cosmic shear analysis. Considering three different model selection criteria, we find no clear preference for either the fiducial flat $\Lambda$CDM model or any of the considered extensions. Besides extensions to the flat $\Lambda$CDM parameter space, we also explore restrictions to common subsets of the flat $\Lambda$CDM parameter space by fixing the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum to the Planck best-fit value, as well as adding external data from supernovae and lensing of the CMB. Neither the beyond-$\Lambda$CDM models nor the imposed restrictions explored in this analysis are able to resolve the $\sim 3\sigma$ tension in $S_8$ between the $3\times2$pt constraints and Planck, with the exception of $w$CDM, where the $S_8$ tension is resolved. The tension in the $w$CDM case persists, however, when considering the joint $S_8$-$w$ parameter space. The joint flat $\Lambda$CDM CMB lensing and $3\times2$pt analysis is found to yield tight constraints on $\Omega_{\rm m}=0.307^{+0.008}_{-0.013}$, $\sigma_8=0.769^{+0.022}_{-0.010}$, and $S_8=0.779^{+0.013}_{-0.013}$., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, accepted in A&A. Cosmological simulations predict that galaxies are embedded into triaxial dark matter haloes, which appear approximately elliptical in projection. Weak gravitational lensing allows us to constrain these halo shapes and thereby test the nature of dark matter. Weak lensing has already provided robust detections of the signature of halo flattening at the mass scales of groups and clusters, whereas results for galaxies have been somewhat inconclusive. Here we combine data from five surveys (NGVSLenS, KiDS/KV450, CFHTLenS, CS82, and RCSLenS) in order to tighten observational constraints on galaxy-scale halo ellipticity for photometrically selected lens samples. We constrain $f_\rm{h}$, the average ratio between the aligned component of the halo ellipticity and the ellipticity of the light distribution, finding $f_\rm{h}=0.303^{+0.080}_{-0.079}$ for red lenses and $f_\rm{h}=0.217^{+0.160}_{-0.159}$ for blue lenses when assuming elliptical NFW density profiles and a linear scaling between halo ellipticity and galaxy ellipticity. Our constraints for red galaxies constitute the currently most significant ($3.8\sigma$) systematics-corrected detection of the signature of halo flattening at the mass scale of galaxies. Our results are in good agreement with expectations from the Millennium Simulation that apply the same analysis scheme and incorporate models for galaxy-halo misalignment. Assuming these misalignment models and the analysis assumptions stated above are correct, our measurements imply an average dark matter halo ellipticity for the studied red galaxy samples of $\langle|\epsilon_\rm{h}|\rangle=0.174\pm 0.046$, where $|\epsilon_{h}|=(1-q)/(1+q)$ relates to the ratio $q=b/a$ of the minor and major axes of the projected mass distribution. We performed an internal-consistency test of the KiDS+VIKING-450 (KV450) cosmic shear analysis with a colour-based split of source galaxies. Utilising the same measurements and calibrations for both sub-samples, we inspected the characteristics of the shear measurements and the performance of the calibration pipelines. On the modelling side, we examined the observational nuisance parameters, specifically those for the redshift calibration and intrinsic alignments, using a Bayesian analysis with dedicated test parameters. We verified that the current nuisance parameters are sufficient for the KV450 data to capture residual systematics, with slight deviations seen in the second and the third redshift tomographic bins. Our test also showcases the degeneracy between the inferred amplitude of intrinsic alignments and the redshift uncertainties in low redshift tomographic bins. We present a sample of luminous red-sequence galaxies to study the large-scale structure in the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. The selected galaxies are defined by a red-sequence template, in the form of a data-driven model of the colour-magnitude relation conditioned on redshift. In this work, the red-sequence template is built using the broad-band optical+near infrared photometry of KiDS-VIKING and the overlapping spectroscopic data sets. The selection process involves estimating the red-sequence redshifts, assessing the purity of the sample, and estimating the underlying redshift distributions of redshift bins. After performing the selection, we mitigate the impact of survey properties on the observed number density of galaxies by assigning photometric weights to the galaxies. We measure the angular two-point correlation function of the red galaxies in four redshift bins, and constrain the large scale bias of our red-sequence sample assuming a fixed $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. We find consistent linear biases for two luminosity-threshold samples (dense and luminous). We present cosmological constraints from a cosmic shear analysis of the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), doubling the survey area with nine-band optical and near-infrared photometry with respect to previous KiDS analyses. Adopting a spatially flat $\Lambda$CDM model, we find $S_8 = \sigma_8 (\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5} = 0.759^{+0.024}_{-0.021}$ for our fiducial analysis, which is in $3\sigma$ tension with the prediction of the Planck Legacy analysis of the cosmic microwave background. We compare our fiducial COSEBIs (Complete Orthogonal Sets of E/B-Integrals) analysis with complementary analyses of the two-point shear correlation function and band power spectra, finding results to be in excellent agreement. We investigate the sensitivity of all three statistics to a number of measurement, astrophysical, and modelling systematics, finding our $S_8$ constraints to be robust and dominated by statistical errors. Our cosmological analysis of different divisions of the data pass the Bayesian internal consistency tests, with the exception of the second tomographic bin. We present a joint cosmological analysis of weak gravitational lensing observations from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), with redshift-space galaxy clustering observations from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), and galaxy-galaxy lensing observations from the overlap between KiDS-1000, BOSS and the spectroscopic 2-degree Field Lensing Survey (2dFLenS). This combination of large-scale structure probes breaks the degeneracies between cosmological parameters for individual observables, resulting in a constraint on the structure growth parameter $S_8=\sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3} = 0.766^{+0.020}_{-0.014}$, that has the same overall precision as that reported by the full-sky cosmic microwave background observations from Planck. The recovered $S_8$ amplitude is low, however, by $8.3 \pm 2.6$ % relative to Planck. This result builds from a series of KiDS-1000 analyses where we validate our methodology with variable depth mock galaxy surveys, our lensing calibration with image simulations and null-tests, and our optical-to-near-infrared redshift calibration with multi-band mock catalogues and a spectroscopic-photometric clustering analysis. The systematic uncertainties identified by these analyses are folded through as nuisance parameters in our cosmological analysis. Inspecting the offset between the marginalised posterior distributions, we find that the $S_8$-difference with Planck is driven by a tension in the matter fluctuation amplitude parameter, $\sigma_8$. We present weak lensing shear catalogues from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey, KiDS-1000, spanning 1006 square degrees of deep and high-resolution imaging. Our `gold-sample' of galaxies, with well-calibrated photometric redshift distributions, consists of 21 million galaxies with an effective number density of $6.17$ galaxies per square arcminute. We quantify the accuracy of the spatial, temporal, and flux-dependent point-spread function (PSF) model, verifying that the model meets our requirements to induce less than a $0.1\sigma$ change in the inferred cosmic shear constraints on the clustering cosmological parameter $S_8 = \sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}$. Through a series of two-point null-tests, we validate the shear estimates, finding no evidence for significant non-lensing B-mode distortions in the data. The PSF residuals are detected in the highest-redshift bins, originating from object selection and/or weight bias. The amplitude is, however, shown to be sufficiently low and within our stringent requirements. With a shear-ratio null-test, we verify the expected redshift scaling of the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal around luminous red galaxies. We simultaneously present constraints on the stellar-to-halo mass relation for central and satellite galaxies through a weak lensing analysis of spectroscopically classified galaxies. Using overlapping data from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), and the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA), we find that satellite galaxies are hosted by halo masses that are $0.53 \pm 0.39$ dex (68\% confidence, $3\sigma$ detection) smaller than those of central galaxies of the same stellar mass (for a stellar mass of $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) = 10.6$). This is consistent with galaxy formation models, whereby infalling satellite galaxies are preferentially stripped of their dark matter. We find consistent results with similar uncertainties when comparing constraints from a standard azimuthally averaged galaxy-galaxy lensing analysis and a two-dimensional likelihood analysis of the full shear field. As the latter approach is somewhat biased due to the lens incompleteness and as it does not provide any improvement to the precision when applied to actual data, we conclude that stacked tangential shear measurements are best-suited for studies of the galaxy-halo connection., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The physics of gravity on cosmological scales affects both the rate of assembly of large-scale structure, and the gravitational lensing of background light through this cosmic web. By comparing the amplitude of these different observational signatures, we can construct tests that can distinguish general relativity from its potential modifications. We used the latest weak gravitational lensing dataset from the Kilo-Degree Survey, KiDS-1000, in conjunction with overlapping galaxy spectroscopic redshift surveys BOSS and 2dFLenS, to perform the most precise existing amplitude-ratio test. We measured the associated E_G statistic with 15-20% errors, in five dz = 0.1 tomographic redshift bins in the range 0.2 < z < 0.7, on projected scales up to 100 Mpc/h. The scale-independence and redshift-dependence of these measurements are consistent with the theoretical expectation of general relativity in a Universe with matter density Omega_m = 0.27 +/- 0.04. We present updated cosmological constraints for the KiDS+VIKING-450 cosmic shear data set (KV450), estimated using redshift distributions and photometric samples defined using self-organising maps (SOMs). Our fiducial analysis finds marginal posterior constraints of $S_8\equiv\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}=0.716^{+0.043}_{-0.038}$; smaller than, but otherwise consistent with, previous work using this data set ($|\Delta S_8| = 0.023$). We analyse additional samples and redshift distributions constructed in three ways: excluding certain spectroscopic surveys during redshift calibration, excluding lower-confidence spectroscopic redshifts in redshift calibration, and considering only photometric sources which are jointly calibrated by at least three spectroscopic surveys. In all cases, the method utilised here proves robust: we find a maximal deviation from our fiducial analysis of $|\Delta S_8| \leq 0.011$ for all samples defined and analysed using our SOM. To demonstrate the reduction in systematic biases found within our analysis, we highlight our results when performing redshift calibration without the DEEP2 spectroscopic data set. In this case we find marginal posterior constraints of $S_8=0.707_{-0.042}^{+0.046}$; a difference with respect to the fiducial that is both significantly smaller than, and in the opposite direction to, the equivalent shift from previous work. These results suggest that our improved cosmological parameter estimates are insensitive to pathological misrepresentation of photometric sources by the spectroscopy used for direct redshift calibration, and therefore that this systematic effect cannot be responsible for the observed difference between $S_8$ estimates made with KV450 and Planck CMB probes., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 4 appendices, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We present a semi-analytic model for the shear two-point correlation function of a cosmic shear survey with non-uniform depth. Ground-based surveys are subject to depth variations that primarily arise through varying atmospheric conditions. For a survey like the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), we find that the measured depth variation increases the amplitude of the observed shear correlation function at the level of a few percent out to degree-scales, relative to the assumed uniform-depth case. The impact on the inferred cosmological parameters is shown to be insignificant for a KiDS-like survey. For next-generation cosmic shear experiments, however, we conclude that variable depth should be accounted for.

We present cosmological constraints from a joint cosmic shear analysis of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KV450) and the Dark Energy Survey (DES-Y1), conducted using Complete Orthogonal Sets of E/B-Integrals (COSEBIs). With COSEBIs we isolate any B-modes which have a non-cosmic shear origin and demonstrate the robustness of our cosmological E-mode analysis as no significant B-modes are detected. We highlight how COSEBIs are fairly insensitive to the amplitude of the non-linear matter power spectrum at high $k$-scales, mitigating the uncertain impact of baryon feedback in our analysis. COSEBIs, therefore, allow us to utilise additional small-scale information, improving the DES-Y1 joint constraints on $S_8=\sigma_8(\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5}$ and $\Omega_{\rm m}$ by $20\%$. Adopting a flat $\Lambda$CDM model we find $S_8=0.755^{+0.019}_{-0.021}$, which is in $3.2\sigma$ tension with the Planck Legacy analysis of the cosmic microwave background., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 15 pages, 7 figures

We present a weak lensing detection of filamentary structures in the cosmic web, combining data from the Kilo-Degree Survey, the Red Cluster Sequence Lensing Survey and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey. The line connecting luminous red galaxies with a separation of $3 - 5\, h^{-1}\text{Mpc}$ is chosen as a proxy for the location of filaments. We measure the average weak lensing shear around $\sim$11,000 candidate filaments selected in this way from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. After nulling the shear induced by the dark matter haloes around each galaxy, we report a $3.4\,\sigma$ detection of an anisotropic shear signal from the matter that connects them. Adopting a filament density profile, motivated from $N$-body simulations, the average density at the centre of these filamentary structures is found to be $15 \pm 4$ times the critical density., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The KiDS Strongly lensed QUAsar Detection project (KiDS-SQuaD) aims at finding as many previously undiscovered gravitational lensed quasars as possible in the Kilo Degree Survey. This is the second paper of this series where we present a new, automatic object classification method based on machine learning technique. The main goal of this paper is to build a catalogue of bright extragalactic objects (galaxies and quasars), from the KiDS Data Release 4, with a minimum stellar contamination, preserving the completeness as much as possible, to then apply morphological methods to select reliable gravitationally lensed (GL) quasar candidates. After testing some of the most used machine learning algorithms, decision trees based classifiers, we decided to use CatBoost, that was specifically trained with the aim of creating a sample of extragalactic sources as clean as possible from stars. We discuss the input data, define the training sample for the classifier, give quantitative estimates of its performances, and finally describe the validation results with Gaia DR2, AllWISE, and GAMA catalogues. We have built and make available to the scientific community the KiDS Bright EXtraGalactic Objects catalogue (KiDS-BEXGO), specifically created to find gravitational lenses. This is made of $\approx6$ millions of sources classified as quasars ($\approx 200\,000$) and galaxies ($\approx 5.7$M), up to $r<22^m$. From this catalog we selected 'Multiplets': close pairs of quasars or galaxies surrounded by at least one quasar, presenting the 12 most reliable gravitationally lensed quasar candidates, to demonstrate the potential of the catalogue, which will be further explored in a forthcoming paper. Intrinsic galaxy alignments are a source of bias for weak lensing measurements as well as a tool for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. In this work, we measure the alignment of shapes of satellite galaxies, in galaxy groups, with respect to the brightest group galaxy (BGG), as well as alignments of the BGG shape with the satellite positions, using the highly complete Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic survey and deep imaging from the Kilo Degree Survey. We control systematic errors with dedicated image simulations and measure accurate shapes using the DEIMOS shape measurement method. We find a significant satellite radial alignment signal, which vanishes at large separations from the BGG. We do not identify any strong trends of the signal with galaxy absolute magnitude or group mass. The alignment signal is dominated by red satellites. We also find that the outer regions of galaxies are aligned more strongly than their inner regions, by varying the radial weight employed during the shape measurement process. This behaviour is evident for both red and blue satellites. BGGs are also found to be aligned with satellite positions, with this alignment being stronger when considering the innermost satellites, using red BGGs and the shape of the outer region of the BGG. We revisit the performance and biases of the two-dimensional approach to galaxy-galaxy lensing. This method exploits the information for the actual positions and ellipticities of source galaxies, rather than using only the ensemble properties of statistically equivalent samples. We compare the performance of this method with the traditionally used one-dimensional tangential shear signal on a set of mock data that resemble the current state-of-the-art weak lensing surveys. We find that under idealised circumstances the confidence regions of joint constraints for the amplitude and scale parameters of the NFW model in the two-dimensional analysis can be more than three times tighter than the one-dimensional results. Moreover, this improvement depends on the lens number density and it is larger for higher densities. We compare the method against the results from the hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation in order to test for possible biases that might arise due to lens galaxies being missed, and find that the method is able to return unbiased estimates of halo masses when compared to the true properties of the EAGLE galaxies. We present the curation and verification of a new combined optical and near infrared dataset for cosmology and astrophysics, derived from the combination of $ugri$-band imaging from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) and $ZY\!J\!H\!K_{\rm s}$-band imaging from the VISTA Kilo degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey. This dataset is unrivaled in cosmological imaging surveys due to its combination of area ($458$ deg$^2$ before masking), depth ($r\le25$), and wavelength coverage ($ugriZY\!J\!H\!K_{\rm s}$). The combination of survey depth, area, and (most importantly) wavelength coverage allows significant reductions in systematic uncertainties (i.e. reductions of between 10 and 60\% in bias, outlier rate, and scatter) in photometric-to-spectroscopic redshift comparisons, compared to the optical-only case at photo-$z$ above $0.7$. The complementarity between our optical and NIR surveys means that over $80\%$ of our sources, across all photo-$z$, have significant detections (i.e. not upper limits) in our $8$ reddest bands. We derive photometry, photo-$z$, and stellar masses for all sources in the survey, and verify these data products against existing spectroscopic galaxy samples. We demonstrate the fidelity of our higher-level data products by constructing the survey stellar mass functions in 8 volume-complete redshift bins. We find that these photometrically derived mass functions provide excellent agreement with previous mass evolution studies derived using spectroscopic surveys. Exploiting the full statistical power of future cosmic shear surveys will necessitate improvements to the accuracy with which the gravitational lensing signal is measured. We present a framework for calibrating shear with image simulations that demonstrates the importance of including realistic correlations between galaxy morphology, size and more importantly, photometric redshifts. This realism is essential so that selection and shape measurement biases can be calibrated accurately for a tomographic cosmic shear analysis. We emulate Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) observations of the COSMOS field using morphological information from {\it Hubble} Space Telescope imaging, faithfully reproducing the measured galaxy properties from KiDS observations of the same field. We calibrate our shear measurements from lensfit, and find through a range of sensitivity tests that lensfit is robust and unbiased within the allowed 2 per cent tolerance of our study. Our results show that the calibration has to be performed by selecting the tomographic samples in the simulations, consistent with the actual cosmic shear analysis, because the joint distributions of galaxy properties are found to vary with redshift. Ignoring this redshift variation could result in misestimating the shear bias by an amount that exceeds the allowed tolerance. To improve the calibration for future cosmic shear analyses, it will be essential to also correctly account for the measurement of photometric redshifts, which requires simulating multi-band observations., Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures and 2 tables. We directly constrain the non-linear alignment (NLA) model of intrinsic galaxy alignments, analysing the most representative and complete flux-limited sample of spectroscopic galaxies available for cosmic shear surveys. We measure the projected galaxy position-intrinsic shear correlations and the projected galaxy clustering signal using high-resolution imaging from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) overlapping with the GAMA spectroscopic survey, and data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Separating samples by colour, we make no significant detection of blue galaxy alignments, constraining the blue galaxy NLA amplitude $A_{\textrm{IA}}^{\textrm{B}}=0.21^{+0.37}_{-0.36}$ to be consistent with zero. We make robust detections ($\sim9\sigma$) for red galaxies, with $A_{\textrm{IA}}^{\textrm{R}}=3.18^{+0.47}_{-0.46}$, corresponding to a net radial alignment with the galaxy density field, and we find no evidence for any scaling of alignments with galaxy luminosity. We provide informative priors for current and future weak lensing surveys, an improvement over de facto wide priors that allow for unrealistic levels of intrinsic alignment contamination. For a colour-split cosmic shear analysis of the final KiDS survey area, we forecast that our priors will improve the constraining power on $S_{8}$ and the dark energy equation of state $w_{0}$, by up to $62\%$ and $51\%$, respectively. We analyse three public cosmic shear surveys; the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-450), the Dark Energy Survey (DES-SV) and the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS). Adopting the COSEBIs statistic to cleanly and completely separate the lensing E-modes from the non-lensing B-modes, we detect B-modes in KiDS-450 and CFHTLenS at the level of about 2.7 $\sigma$. For DES- SV we detect B-modes at the level of 2.8 $\sigma$ in a non-tomographic analysis, increasing to a 5.5 $\sigma$ B-mode detection in a tomographic analysis. In order to understand the origin of these detected B-modes we measure the B-mode signature of a range of different simulated systematics including PSF leakage, random but correlated PSF modelling errors, camera-based additive shear bias and photometric redshift selection bias. We show that any correlation between photometric-noise and the relative orientation of the galaxy to the point-spread-function leads to an ellipticity selection bias in tomographic analyses. This work therefore introduces a new systematic for future lensing surveys to consider. We find that the B-modes in DES-SV appear similar to a superposition of the B-mode signatures from all of the systematics simulated. The outer regions of galaxies are more susceptible to the tidal interactions that lead to intrinsic alignments of galaxies. The resulting alignment signal may therefore depend on the passband if the colours of galaxies vary spatially. To quantify this, we measured the shapes of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from the GAMA survey using deep gri imaging data from the KiloDegree Survey. The performance of the moment-based shape measurement algorithm DEIMOS was assessed using dedicated image simulations, which showed that the ellipticities could be determined with an accuracy better than 1% in all bands. Additional tests for potential systematic errors did not reveal any issues. We measure a significant difference of the alignment signal between the g,r and i-band observations. This difference exceeds the amplitude of the linear alignment model on scales below 2 Mpc/h.
