3. Housing Search in the Age of Big Data: Smarter Cities or the Same Old Blind Spots?

Abstract

Housing scholars stress the importance of the information environment in shaping housing search behavior and outcomes. Rental listings have increasingly moved online over the past two decades and, in turn, online platforms like Craigslist are now central to the search process. Do these technology platforms serve as information equalizers or do they reflect traditional information inequalities that correlate with neighborhood sociodemographics? We synthesize and extend analyses of millions of US Craigslist rental listings and find they supply significantly different volumes, quality, and types of information in different communities. Technology platforms have the potential to broaden, diversify, and equalize housing search information, but they rely on landlord behavior and, in turn, likely will not reach this potential without a significant redesign or policy intervention. Smart cities advocates hoping to build better cities through technology must critically interrogate technology platforms and big data for systematic biases.

5. What's in a name? Place misrepresentation and neighbourhood stigma in the online rental market.

Abstract

In this article we examine how the online rental housing market reflects the desirability of different neighbourhoods in St. Louis, MO, a metropolitan area with long-standing high levels of Black–White residential segregation. Using a large digital corpus of advertisements for rental housing, we first show that adverts in neighbourhoods with more Black residents are less likely to list a neighbourhood name than adverts for available housing units in neighbourhoods with more White residents. Advertisements for housing in neighbourhoods with more Black residents are also more likely to list a different, higher-income neighbourhood name than the one in which they are located. Next, using a survey of St. Louis residents, we find that neighbourhoods with more Black residents are perceived as less desirable by both White and Black St. Louisans. We then employ a pair of survey experiments and find that interest in renting a particular housing unit changes if the advert does not list a neighbourhood name or uses a different neighbourhood name than one commonly associated with its location. Altogether, our findings reveal that postings in online housing markets reflect and reproduce existing racial-spatial patterns and may contribute to the avoidance/stigmatisation of certain neighbourhoods. 7. Does Exposure to Election Fraud Research Undermine Confidence in Elections?

Abstract

Can academic research on election fraud undermine public confidence in elections? As election results become instantaneously accessible all over the world, academic research can increasingly influence perceptions of election integrity. To examine how electoral fraud information from academic research can affect voters' beliefs about the legitimacy of election results, we conducted a survey experiment following the 2020 general election in South Korea. Using a nationally representative sample of Korean voters and exploiting a unique real-world situation featuring foreign academics considered relatively impartial, we found that exposure to hypothetical election fraud claims undermined confidence in electoral outcomes, measured via both self-reports and behavioral measures. Moreover, the claims' impact was conditional on voters' partisan attachments—strongest among supporters of the losing party—which is in line with the logic of motivated reasoning. Our work contributes to the literature on election integrity, using a relatively new yet stable democracy as its test case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Electoral Fraud and Public Opinion: Using Survey Experimental Data from Korea

Abstract

In the aftermath of the 21st general election in Korea held on April 15, 2020, some started raising concerns of fraud. Not only the losing opposition conservative party candidate raised some blanket allegations about fraud, a prominent American scholar of election forensics released a report on the matter and some even went to the extent of claiming that China rigged the elections upon the request from the sitting president. Using a nationally representative sample of more than 1,500 respondents in Korea, we conducted a survey experiment in three months after an actual election, in order to investigate how claims of electoral fraud affect people’s belief in the legitimacy of election results.

Abstract

Previous studies have shown that Americans are more accepting of inequality than other nationalities and that racial prejudice is a major contributor to the low levels of public support for the redistribution of wealth toward low-income workers. During the Covid-19 pandemic, however, American citizens have increasingly recognized the essential role low-income workers play in society. Will this growing attention to low-income workers increase public support for redistribution? Will this effect moderate the strong influence of race-based considerations in American attitudes toward redistribution? We answer these questions through a choice-based conjoint experiment, where respondents will compare two individuals and evaluate their deservingness for government assistance programs.

13. Perception of Essential Workers, Racial Prejudice, and Redistributive Preferences

Abstract

Despite rising income inequality over recent decades, the American public does not demand more redistribution (Kelly and Enns 2010; Kenworthy and McCall 2008). Previous studies point to racial bias as a key determinant of low public support for redistribution (Gilens 1995, 1999; Quadagno et al. 1994). A deficit of political demands for redistribution fails to incentivize policy-makers to increase welfare spending, which in turn, reinforces inequality (Brooks and Manza 2007; Soroka and Wlezien 2012; Wlezien 2004). Accordingly, the vast majority of low-income workers have suffered from poverty with little access to social support. The Covid-19 pandemic in the U.S. has aggravated the financial vulnerability of low-income workers. Social distancing measures meant to curb the spread of the virus resulted in a massive job or wage loss concentrated among low-income workers, most of whom cannot work from home. Moreover, the fact that African Americans and Latinos are over-represented in low-income jobs implies that the pandemic's financial burden disproportionately affects these racial minorities despite their contribution to society. In this study, we examine how the emphasis on the essential contribution to society made by low-income workers affects non-black citizens' racial bias in their redistributive preferences. While the economic toll of the Covid-19 pandemic has most heavily affected low-income workers, perhaps ironically, the crisis has also made citizens realize how much American society relies on the labor provided by these workers. During the pandemic, many low-income workers are classified as essential workers to the basic functioning of society and continued to work jobs and put their health at risk. These jobs include bus drivers, garbage collectors, food processing plant workers, grocery store cashiers, and care providers. Although our society's dependence on these workers' labor is nothing new, their social and economic roles have become particularly salient during the current pandemic. Will this growing attention to low-income essential workers increase public support for redistribution? Further, how does it interact with the public's racial bias in their redistributive preferences? To address this question, we investigate how priming about a race of low-income essential workers (white and black) alters public support for redistribution policies.

14. Signals of Segregation: The Use of Spanish in Online Housing Advertisements

Abstract

Recent work has highlighted the potential for information about housing and neighborhood options to impact homeseekers’ choices and ultimately residential segregation and inequality. We identify a novel source of information about neighborhood ethnoracial and immigrant composition which does not violate Fair Housing Laws—the use of Spanish in online rental housing advertisements—and examine the impact of Spanish language advertisements on Whites’ and Latinos’ residential choices. Using a corpus of millions of Craigslist advertisements for rental housing we show that Spanish posts are concentrated in majority-Latino neighborhoods with greater proportions of immigrant and Spanish-speaking residents. We then use survey experiments to demonstrate that the use of Spanish impacts not only interest in particular housing units but also perceptions of the surrounding neighborhood. Our findings identify a new mechanism that could help maintain Latino-White segregation and demonstrate the value of combining ‘big’ data with survey experiments.

15. An Unequal and Polarized Democracy: Why Has Unequal Growth Caused Party Polarization in the American Public

Abstract

Scholars have demonstrated that economic inequality in America is closely correlated to political polarization among America's political elites. The connection between the two is explained by the fact that the public's partisanship has become income-stratified because of polarized redistributive preferences. However, the correlation between income and partisanship weakened after the year 2000, and there is no empirical evidence of polarization in redistributive preferences. It is also unclear whether inequality and polarization have a causal relationship because of the complicated and endogenous nature of both trends. In this dissertation, I argue that unequal economic growth leads to political polarization in the American public. Instead of positing that aggregate inequality causes polarization, I focus on the economic experiences of individual voters and their effect on policy attitudes and social identities. I demonstrate that individuals whose living standards have stagnated are likely to have more socially conservative attitudes, stronger in-group solidarity, and out-group derogation, while individuals whose well-being has improved over time are likely to have socially liberal attitudes. To test this theoretical mechanism, I explore two aspects of my theory. First, I test whether income inequality and political polarization among the public are correlated and what dimension of policy preferences is polarized. I demonstrate that the degree of polarization within the public is very closely correlated with income inequality. Indeed, the correlation of income inequality with public polarization is as strong as the political polarization within Congress. Furthermore, I find that polarization is only present in identity politics with the social issues dimension, rather than the economic dimension. Second, I examine the individual and community effect of economic disruption. I show that individuals' fear of and anxiety about losing their economic status—the main psychological mechanism of my theory—causes them to have stronger racial resentment and ethnocentrism. Furthermore, I demonstrate that the regional economic disruption caused by Chinese imports causes voters to have more conservative attitudes about non-economic issues but not economic issues.

Abstract

The paper reports findings from a crowdsourced replication. Eighty-four replicator teams attempted to verify results reported in an original study by running the same models with the same data. The replication involved an experimental condition. A “transparent” group received the original study and code, and an “opaque” group received the same underlying study but with only a methods section and description of the regression coefficients without size or significance, and no code. The transparent group mostly verified the original study (95.5%), while the opaque group had less success (89.4%). Qualitative investigation of the replicators’ workflows reveals many causes of non-verification. Two categories of these causes are hypothesized, routine and non-routine. After correcting non-routine errors in the research process to ensure that the results reflect a level of quality that should be present in ‘real-world’ research, the rate of verification was 96.1 in the transparent group and 92.4 in the opaque group. Two conclusions follow: (1) Although high, the verification rate suggests that it would take a minimum of three replicators per study to achieve replication reliability of at least 95 confidence assuming ecological validity in this controlled setting, and (2) like any type of scientific research, replication is prone to errors that derive from routine and undeliberate actions in the research process. The latter suggests that idiosyncratic researcher variability might provide a key to understanding part of the “reliability crisis” in social and behavioral science and is a reminder of the importance of transparent and well documented workflows.

Abstract

How does noise generated by researcher decisions undermine the credibility of science? We test this by observing all decisions made among 73 research teams as they independently conduct studies on the same hypothesis with identical starting data. We find excessive variation of outcomes. When combined, the 107 observed research decisions taken across teams explained at most 2.6 of the total variance in effect sizes and 10 of the deviance in subjective conclusions. Expertise, prior beliefs and attitudes of the researchers explain even less. Each model deployed to test the hypothesis was unique, which highlights a vast universe of research design variability that is normally hidden from view and suggests humility when presenting and interpreting scientific findings.

Abstract

In an era of mass migration, social scientists, populist parties and social movements raise concerns over the future of immigration-destination societies. What impacts does this have on policy and social solidarity? Comparative cross-national research, relying mostly on secondary data, has findings in different directions. There is a threat of selective model reporting and lack of replicability. The heterogeneity of countries obscures attempts to clearly define data-generating models. P-hacking and HARKing lurk among standard research practices in this area.This project employs crowdsourcing to address these issues. It draws on replication, deliberation, meta-analysis and harnessing the power of many minds at once. The Crowdsourced Replication Initiative carries two main goals, (a) to better investigate the linkage between immigration and social policy preferences across countries, and (b) to develop crowdsourcing as a social science method. The Executive Report provides short reviews of the area of social policy preferences and immigration, and the methods and impetus behind crowdsourcing plus a description of the entire project. Three main areas of findings will appear in three papers, that are registered as PAPs or in process.

30. A disproportionate burden: strict voter identification laws and minority turnout

Abstract

ABSTRACTCritics of the recent proliferation of strict photo identification laws claim these laws impose a disproportionate burden on racial minorities. Yet, empirical studies of the impact of these laws on minority turnout have reached decidedly mixed results. State and federal courts have responded by offering mixed opinions about the legality of these laws. We offer a more rigorous test of these laws by focusing on more recent elections, by relying on official turnout data rather than surveys, and by employing a more sophisticated research design that assesses change over time using a difference-in-difference approach. Our analysis uses aggregate county turnout data from 2012 to 2016 and finds that the gap in turnout between more racially diverse and less racially diverse counties grew more in states enacting new strict photo ID laws than it did elsewhere. This analysis provides additional empirical evidence that strict voter ID laws appear to discriminate.

Abstract

Women earn less than men who work in the same job with the same level of experience. We know much about this gender wage gap but relatively little about its political or partisan sources. In this article, we examine the effects of party control of state government on gender inequality in income, wages, unemployment, and poverty. Employing both a regression discontinuity design and a dynamic difference‐in‐difference analysis, we find that electing a Democratic majority to the state house leads to substantial improvement in women's incomes, wages, and unemployment relative to men—especially in recent years. We also show that greater female representation in office and more liberal policymaking on policies related to women's rights could be driving that process. We find, however, fewer clear effects on poverty and less robust results for partisan control of the governor's office or the state senate. Parties and politics matter, but not always. Abstract

Housing scholars stress the importance of the information environment in shaping housing search behavior and outcomes. Rental listings have increasingly moved online over the past two decades and, in turn, online platforms like Craigslist are now central to the search process. Do these technology platforms serve as information equalizers or do they reflect traditional information inequalities that correlate with neighborhood sociodemographics? We synthesize and extend analyses of millions of U.S. Craigslist rental listings and find they supply significantly different volumes, quality, and types of information in different communities. Technology platforms have the potential to broaden, diversify, and equalize housing search information, but they rely on landlord behavior and, in turn, likely will not reach this potential without a significant redesign or policy intervention. Abstract

Mounting import competition from China has increased unemployment in manufacturing and suppressed wages in local labor markets around the United States. This article investigates the political effects of this China trade shock, using a unique dataset of the district-level economic impact of Chinese imports to the United States. The liberalization of trade following China’s accession to the World Trade Organization increased political polarization among American voters and encouraged legislators in economically hard-hit districts to take positions hostile to China. The result is that Congress is even more hostile towards China today than in the aftermath of the Tiananmen Massacre. After 2003, members of Congress who voted against China were more likely to come from districts that were adversely impacted by import competition, controlling for ideology and partisanship. By contrast, import competition was not a significant predictor of earlier congressional opposition to granting most-favored-nation status to China (suggesting that voting on these crucial pieces of legislation was driven by non-economic concerns such as human rights). Abstract

This study explores how researchers' analytical choices affect the reliability of scientific findings. Most discussions of reliability problems in science focus on systematic biases. We broaden the lens to emphasize the idiosyncrasy of conscious and unconscious decisions that researchers make during data analysis. We coordinated 161 researchers in 73 research teams and observed their research decisions as they used the same data to independently test the same prominent social science hypothesis: that greater immigration reduces support for social policies among the public. In this typical case of social science research, research teams reported both widely diverging numerical findings and substantive conclusions despite identical start conditions. Researchers' expertise, prior beliefs, and expectations barely predict the wide variation in research outcomes. More than 95% of the total variance in numerical results remains unexplained even after qualitative coding of all identifiable decisions in each team's workflow. This reveals a universe of uncertainty that remains hidden when considering a single study in isolation. The idiosyncratic nature of how researchers' results and conclusions varied is a previously underappreciated explanation for why many scientific hypotheses remain contested. These results call for greater epistemic humility and clarity in reporting scientific findings.
