The shape of the Ly-$\alpha$ transmission in the near zone of the redshift $z=5.9896$ quasar ULAS J0148$+$0600 (hereafter J0148) is consistent with a damping wing arising from an extended neutral hydrogen island in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM). Here we use simulations of late-ending reionisation from Sherwood-Relics to assess the expected incidence of quasars with Ly-$\alpha$ and Ly-$\beta$ absorption similar to the observed J0148 spectrum. We find a late end to reionisation at $z=5.3$ is a necessary requirement for reproducing a Ly-$\alpha$ damping wing consistent with J0148. This occurs in $\sim3$ per cent of our simulated spectra for an IGM neutral fraction $\langle x_{\rm HI}\rangle=0.14$ at $z=6$. However, using standard assumptions for the ionising photon output of J0148, the a priori probability of drawing a simulated quasar spectrum with a Ly-$\alpha$ damping wing profile and Ly-$\alpha$ near zone size that simultaneously match J0148 is very low, $p<10^{-3}$. We speculate this is because the ionising emission from J0148 is variable on timescales $t<10^{5}\rm\,yr$, or alternatively that the Ly-$\alpha$ transmission in the J0148 near zone is impacted by the transverse proximity effect from nearby star-forming galaxies or undetected quasars. We also predict the IGM temperature should be $T\sim 4\times 10^{4}\rm\,K$ within a few proper Mpc of the Ly-$\alpha$ near zone edge due to recent HI and HeII photo-heating. Evidence for enhanced thermal broadening in the Ly-$\alpha$ absorption near the damping wing edge would provide further evidence that the final stages of reionisation are occurring at $z<6$., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. Recent work has suggested that, during reionisation, spatial variations in the ionising radiation field should produce enhanced Ly ${\alpha}$ forest transmission at distances of tens of comoving Mpc from high-redshift galaxies. We demonstrate that the Sherwood-Relics suite of hybrid radiation-hydrodynamical simulations are qualitatively consistent with this interpretation. The shape of the galaxy--Ly ${\alpha}$ transmission cross-correlation is sensitive to both the mass of the haloes hosting the galaxies and the volume averaged fraction of neutral hydrogen in the IGM, $\bar{x}_{\rm HI}$. The reported excess Ly ${\alpha}$ forest transmission on scales r ~ 10 cMpc at $\langle z \rangle \approx 5.2$ -- as measured using C IV absorbers as proxies for high-redshift galaxies -- is quantitatively reproduced by Sherwood-Relics at z = 6 if we assume the galaxies that produce ionising photons are hosted in haloes with mass $M_{\rm h}\geq 10^{10}~h^{-1}\,{\rm M}_\odot$. However, this redshift mismatch is equivalent to requiring $\bar{x}_{\rm HI}\sim 0.1$ at $z\simeq 5.2$, which is inconsistent with the observed Ly ${\alpha}$ forest effective optical depth distribution. We speculate this tension may be partly resolved if the minimum C IV absorber host halo mass at z > 5 is larger than $M_{\rm h}=10^{10}~h^{-1}\,{\rm M}_\odot$. After reionisation completes, relic IGM temperature fluctuations will continue to influence the shape of the cross-correlation on scales of a few comoving Mpc at $4 \leq z \leq 5$. Constraining the redshift evolution of the cross-correlation over this period may therefore provide further insight into the timing of reionisation., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. Hyperentanglement, which refers to entanglement across more than one degree of freedom (DoF), is a valuable resource in photonic quantum information technology. However, the lack of efficient characterization schemes hinders its quantitative study and application potential. Here, we present a rapid quantitative characterization of spatial-polarization hyperentangled biphoton state produced from spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We first demonstrate rapid certification of the hyperentanglement dimensionality with a cumulative acquisition time of only 17 minutes. In particular, we verify transverse spatial entanglement through a violation of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen criterion with a minimum conditional uncertainty product of $(0.11\pm0.05)\hbar$ and certify the entanglement dimensionality to be at least 148. Next, by performing spatially-resolved polarization state tomography of the entire field, we demonstrate the generation of an entire class of near-maximally polarization-entangled states with an average concurrence of $0.8303\pm0.0004$. Together, the results reveal a total dimensionality of at least 251, which is the highest dimensionality reported for hyperentanglement. These measurements quantitatively resolve the influence of the spatial correlations of the down-converted photons and the angular spectrum of the pump beam on the polarization entanglement. Our study lays important groundwork for further exploiting the high dimensionality and cross-DoF correlations in hyperentangled states for future quantum technologies.

The 21-cm forest signal is a promising probe of the Epoch of Reionization complementary to other 21-cm line observables and Ly$\alpha$ forest signal. Prospects of detecting it have significantly improved in the last decade thanks to the discovery of more than 30 radio-loud quasars at these redshifts, upgrades to telescope facilities, and the notion that neutral hydrogen islands persist down to $z\lesssim 5.5$. We forward-model the 21-cm forest signal using semi-numerical simulations and incorporate various instrumental features to explore the potential of detecting the 21-cm forest at $z=6$, both directly and statistically, with the currently available (uGMRT) and forthcoming (SKA1-low) observatories. We show that it is possible to detect the 1D power spectrum of the 21-cm forest spectrum, especially at large scales of $k\lesssim8.5\,\rm MHz^{-1}$ with the $500\,\rm hr$ of the uGMRT time and $k\lesssim32.4\,\rm MHz^{-1}$ with the SKA1-low over $50\,\rm hr$ if the intergalactic medium (IGM) is $25\%$ neutral and these neutral hydrogen regions have a spin temperature of $\lesssim30\,\rm K$. On the other hand, we infer that a null-detection of the signal with such observations of 10 radio-loud sources at $z\approx6$ can be translated into constraints on the thermal and ionization state of the IGM which are tighter than the currently available measurements. Moreover, a null-detection of the 1D 21-cm forest power spectrum with only $50\,\rm hr$ of the uGMRT observations of 10 radio-loud sources can already be competitive with the Ly$\alpha$ forest and 21-cm tomographic observations in disfavouring models of significantly neutral and cold IGM at $z=6$., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures. Recent JWST observations have allowed for the first time to obtain comprehensive measurements of the ionizing photon production efficiency $\xi_\text{ion} $ for a wide range of reionization-epoch galaxies. We explore implications for the inferred UV luminosity functions and escape fractions of ionizing sources in our suite of simulations. These are run with the GPU-based radiative transfer code ATON-HE and are calibrated to the XQR-30 Lyman-alpha forest data at $550$% at $z> 10$, disfavouring the oligarchic source model at very high redshift. The inferred effective clumping factors in our simulations are in the range of $3-6$, suggesting consistency between the observed ionizing properties of reionization-epoch galaxies and the ionizing photon budget in our simulations., Comment: 6 pages. 3 figures

The ability to efficiently characterize the spatial correlations of entangled states of light is critical for applications of many quantum technologies such as quantum imaging. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient theoretical and experimental characterization of the spatial Schmidt modes and the Schmidt spectrum of bright multiphoton entangled states of light produced from high-gain parametric down-conversion. In contrast to previous studies, we exploit the approximate quasihomogeneity and isotropy of the signal field and dramatically reduce the numerical computations involved in the experimental and theoretical characterization procedures. In our particular case where our experimental data sets consist of 5000 single-shot images of 256*256 pixels each, our method reduced the overall computation time by 2 orders of magnitude. This speed-up would be even more dramatic for larger input sizes. Consequently, we are able to rapidly characterize the Schmidt modes and Schmidt spectrum for a range of pump amplitudes and study their variation with increasing gain. Our results clearly reveal the broadening of the Schmidt modes and narrowing of the Schmidt spectrum for increasing gain with good agreement between theory and experiment., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The relative contribution of emission from stellar sources and accretion onto supermassive black holes to reionization has been brought into focus again by the apparent high abundance of faint AGN at $4\lesssim z\lesssim11$ uncovered by JWST. We investigate the contribution of these faint AGN to hydrogen and the early stages of helium reionization using the GPU-based radiative transfer code ATON-HE by post-processing a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation from the SHERWOOD-RELICS suite of simulations. We study four models of reionization: two previously studied galaxy-only late-end reionization models and two new models -- a QSO-assisted model and a QSO-only model. In the QSO-assisted model, 1\% of the haloes host AGN with a 10~Myr lifetime, and the AGN luminosities are scaled such that the AGN contribution to the hydrogen-ionizing emissivity is 20\% of that contributed by galaxies. In the QSO-only model, quasars account for all the hydrogen-ionizing emissivity, with 10\% of the haloes hosting AGN, each with a 10 Myr lifetime. All models are calibrated to the observed mean Lyman-$\alpha$ forest transmission at $5\lesssim z\lesssim6.2$. We find that the QSO-assisted model requires an emissivity factor of $1.8$ lower than the galaxy-only models towards the end of reionization and fits the observed distribution of the Lyman-$\alpha$ optical depths well. Our QSO-only model is inconsistent with the observed Lyman-$\alpha$ optical depths distribution. It also results in too high IGM temperatures at $z\lesssim 5$ due to an early onset of HeII reionization unless the escape fraction of HeII-ionizing photons is assumed to be low. Our results suggest that a modest contribution to reionization by faint AGN is in good agreement with the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest data. Contribution of resolved and unresolved extragalactic point sources to the low-frequency sky spectrum is a potentially non-negligible part of the astrophysical foregrounds for cosmic dawn 21-cm experiments. The clustering of such point sources on the sky, combined with the frequency-dependence of the antenna beam, can also make this contribution chromatic. By combining low-frequency measurements of the luminosity function and the angular correlation function of extragalactic point sources, we develop a model for the contribution of these sources to the low-frequency sky spectrum. Using this model, we find that the contribution of sources with flux density $>10^{-6}\,$Jy to the sky-averaged spectrum is smooth and of the order of a few kelvins at 50--$200\,$MHz. We combine this model with measurements of the galactic foreground spectrum and weigh the resultant sky by the beam directivity of the conical log-spiral antenna planned as part of the Radio Experiment for the Analysis of Cosmic Hydrogen (REACH) project. We find that the contribution of point sources to the resultant spectrum is $\sim0.4\%$ of the total foregrounds, but still larger by at least an order of magnitude than the standard predictions for the cosmological 21-cm signal. As a result, not accounting for the point-source contribution leads to a systematic bias in 21-cm signal recovery. We show, however, that in the REACH case, this reconstruction bias can be removed by modelling the point-source contribution as a power law with a running spectral index. Recent quasar absorption line observations suggest that reionization may end as late as $z \approx 5.3$. As a means to search for large neutral hydrogen islands at $z<6$, we revisit long dark gaps in the Ly$\beta$ forest in VLT/X-Shooter and Keck/ESI quasar spectra. We stack the Ly$\alpha$ forest corresponding to both edges of these Ly$\beta$ dark gaps and identify a damping wing-like extended absorption profile. The average redshift of the stacked forest is $z=5.8$. By comparing these observations with reionization simulations, we infer that such a damping wing-like feature can be naturally explained if these gaps are at least partially created by neutral islands. Conversely, simulated dark gaps lacking neutral hydrogen struggle to replicate the observed damping wing features. Furthermore, this damping wing-like profile implies that the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction must be $\langle x_{\rm HI} \rangle \geq 6.1 \pm 3.9\%$ at $z = 5.8$. This study explores the metal enrichment signatures attributed to the first generation of stars (PopIII) in the Universe, focusing on the E-XQR-30 sample. We aim to identify traces of Pop III metal enrichment by analyzing neutral gas in the interstellar medium of primordial galaxies and their satellite clumps, detected in absorption. To chase the chemical signature of PopIII stars, we studied metal absorption systems in the E-XQR-30 sample, selected through the detection of the OI absorption line at 1302A. The OI line is a reliable tracer of HI and allowed us to overcome the challenges posed by the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest's increasing saturation at redshifts above $\sim5$ to identify Damped Lyman-$\alpha$ systems (DLA). We detected and analyzed 29 OI systems at $z\geq5.4$, differentiating between proximate DLAs (PDLA) and intervening DLAs. Voigt function fits were applied to obtain ionic column densities, and relative chemical abundances were determined for 28 systems. These were then compared with the predictions of theoretical models. Our findings expand the study of OI systems at $z\geq5.4$ fourfold. No systematic differences were observed in the average chemical abundances between PDLAs and intervening DLAs. The chemical abundances in our sample align with literature systems at $z>4.5$, suggesting a similar enrichment pattern for this class of absorption systems. We present a new suite of late-end reionization simulations performed with ATON-HE, a revised version of the GPU-based radiative transfer code ATON that includes helium. The simulations are able to reproduce the Ly$\alpha$ flux distribution of the E-XQR-30 sample of QSO absorption spectra at $5 \lesssim z \lesssim 6.2$, and show that a large variety of reionization models are consistent with these data. We explore a range of variations in source models and in the early-stage evolution of reionization. Our fiducial reionization history has a midpoint of reionization at $z = 6.5$, but we also explore an `Early' reionization history with a midpoint at $z = 7.5$ and an `Extremely Early' reionization history with a midpoint at $z = 9.5$. Haloes massive enough to host observed Ly$\alpha$ emitters are highly biased. The fraction of such haloes embedded in ionized bubbles that are large enough to allow high Ly$\alpha$ transmission becomes close to unity much before the volume filling factor of ionized regions. For our fiducial reionization history this happens at $z = 8$, probably too late to be consistent with the detection by JWST of abundant Ly$\alpha$ emission out to $z = 11$. A reionization history in our `Early' model or perhaps even our `Extremely Early' model may be required, suggesting a Thomson scattering optical depth in tension with that reported by Planck, but consistent with recent suggestions of a significantly higher value., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures

Intervening metal absorbers in quasar spectra at $z > 6$ can be used as probes to study the chemical enrichment of the Universe during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). This work presents the comoving line densities ($dn/dX$) of low ionisation absorbers, namely, Mg II (2796\r{A}), C II (1334\r{A}) and O I (1302\r{A}) across $2 0.03$\r{A}. For the first time, we present the comoving line densities of 131 weak ($W < 0.3$\r{A}) intervening Mg II absorbers at $1.9 < z < 6.4$ which exhibit constant evolution with redshift similar to medium ($0.3 < W < 1.0$\r{A}) absorbers. However, the cosmic mass density of Mg II - dominated by strong Mg II systems - traces the evolution of global star formation history from redshift 1.9 to 5.5. E-XQR-30 also increases the absorption path length by a factor of 50% for C II and O I whose line densities show a rising trend towards $z > 5$, in agreement with previous works. In the context of a decline in metal enrichment of the Universe at $z > 5$, the overall evolution in the incidence rates of absorption systems can be explained by a weak - possibly soft fluctuating - UV background. Our results, thereby, provide evidence for a late reionization continuing to occur in metal-enriched and therefore, biased regions in the Universe., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures

We characterize the multiphase circumgalactic medium and galaxy properties at z = 6.0-6.5 in four quasar fields from the James Webb Space Telescope A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE) program. We use the Very Large Telescope/X-shooter spectra of quasar J0305-3150 to identify one new metal absorber at z = 6.2713 with multiple transitions (OI, MgI, FeII and CII). They are combined with the published absorbing systems in Davies et al. (2023a) at the same redshift range to form of a sample of nine metal absorbers at z = 6.03 to 6.49. We identify eight galaxies within 1000 km s$^{-1}$ and 350 kpc around the absorbing gas from the ASPIRE spectroscopic data, with their redshifts secured by [OIII]($\lambda\lambda$4959, 5007) doublets and H$\beta$ emission lines. Our spectral energy distribution fitting indicates that the absorbing galaxies have stellar mass ranging from 10$^{7.2}$ to 10$^{8.8}M_{\odot}$ and metallicity between 0.02 and 0.4 solar. Notably, the z = 6.2713 system in the J0305-3150 field resides in a galaxy overdensity region, which contains two (tentatively) merging galaxies within 350 kpc and seven galaxies within 1 Mpc. We measure the relative abundances of $\alpha$ elements to iron ([$\alpha$/Fe]) and find that the CGM gas in the most overdense region exhibits a lower [$\alpha$/Fe] ratio. Our modeling of the galaxy's chemical abundance favors a top-heavy stellar initial mass function, and hints that we may be witnessing the contribution of the first generation Population III stars to the CGM at the end of reionization epoch., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures in the main text. The spectra of high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 6$) quasars contain valuable information on the progression of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). At redshifts $z<6$, the observed Lyman-series forest shows that the intergalactic medium (IGM) is nearly ionized, while at $z>7$ the observed quasar damping wings indicate high neutral gas fractions. However, there remains a gap in neutral gas fraction constraints at $6\lesssim z \lesssim 7$ where the Lyman series forest becomes saturated but damping wings have yet to fully emerge. In this work, we use a sample of 18 quasar spectra at redshifts $6.0

The variations in Ly$\alpha$ forest opacity observed at $z>5.3$ between lines of sight to different background quasars are too strong to be caused by fluctuations in the density field alone. The leading hypothesis for the cause of this excess variance is a late, ongoing reionization process at redshifts below six. Another model proposes strong ionizing background fluctuations coupled to a short, spatially varying mean free path of ionizing photons, without explicitly invoking incomplete reionization. With recent observations suggesting a short mean free path at $z\sim6$, and a dramatic improvement in $z>5$ Ly$\alpha$ forest data quality, we revisit this latter possibility. Here we apply the likelihood-free inference technique of approximate Bayesian computation to jointly constrain the hydrogen photoionization rate $\Gamma_{\rm HI}$ and the mean free path of ionizing photons $\lambda_{\rm mfp}$ from the effective optical depth distributions at $z=5.0$-$6.1$ from XQR-30. We find that the observations are well-described by fluctuating mean free path models with average mean free paths that are consistent with the steep trend implied by independent measurements at $z\sim5$-$6$, with a concomitant rapid evolution of the photoionization rate., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, resubmitted to ApJ after referee's comments

Measurements of the mean free path of Lyman-continuum photons in the intergalactic medium during the epoch of reionization can help constrain the nature of the sources as well as sinks of hydrogen-ionizing radiation. A recent approach to this measurement has been to utilize composite spectra of multiple quasars at $z\sim 6$, and infer the mean free path after correcting the spectra for the presence of quasar proximity zones. This has revealed not only a steep drop in the mean free path from $z=5$ to $z=6$, but also potentially a mild tension with reionization simulations. We critically examine such direct measurements of the mean free path for biases due to quasar environment, incomplete reionization, and quasar proximity zones. Using cosmological radiative transfer simulations of reionization combined with one-dimensional radiative transfer calculations of quasar proximity zones, we find that the bias in the mean free path due to overdensities around quasars is minimal at $z\sim 6$. Patchiness of reionization at this redshift also does not affect the measurements significantly. Fitting our model to the data results in a mean free path of $\lambda_{\mathrm{mfp}}=1.49^{+0.47}_{-0.52}$~pMpc at $z=6$, which is consistent with the recent measurements in the literature, indicating robustness with respect to the modelling of quasar proximity zones. We also compare various ways in which the mean free path has been defined in simulations before the end of reionization. Lyman-$\alpha$ photons enable the cosmic dawn 21-cm signal through a process called the Wouthuysen-Field effect. An accurate model of the signal in this epoch hinges on the accuracy of the computation of the Ly$\alpha$ coupling, which requires one to calculate the specific intensity of Ly$\alpha$ photons emitted from the first stars. Most traditional calculations of the Ly$\alpha$ coupling assume a delta-function scattering cross-section, as the resonant nature of the Ly$\alpha$ scattering makes an accurate radiative transfer (RT) solution computationally expensive. Attempts to improve upon this traditional approach using numerical RT have recently emerged. However, some of these treatments suffer from assumptions such as a uniform gas distribution, coherent scattering in the gas frame and isotropic scattering. While others which do not account for these only do so through certain schemes along with core-skipping algorithms. We present results from a self-consistent Monte Carlo RT simulations devoid of any of the assumptions in the previous work for the first time. We find that gas bulk motion is the most important effect to account for in RT resulting in an RMS difference of 38% in the 21-cm signal and anisotropic scattering being the least important effect contributing to less than 3% RMS difference in 21-cm signal. We also evaluate the 21-cm power spectrum and compare that with the traditional results at cosmic dawn. Confronting measurements of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest with cosmological hydrodynamical simulations has produced stringent constraints on models of particle dark matter and the thermal and ionization state of the intergalactic medium. We investigate the robustness of such models of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest, focussing on the effect of particle initial conditions on the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest statistics in cosmological SPH simulations. We study multiple particle initialization algorithms in simulations that are designed to be identical in other respects. In agreement with the literature, we find that the correct linear theory evolution is obtained when a glass-like configuration is used for initial unperturbed gas particle positions alongside a regular grid configuration for dark matter particles and the use of non-identical initial density perturbations for gas and dark matter. However, we report that this introduces a large scale-dependent distortion in the one-dimensional Lyman-$\alpha$ transmission power spectrum at small scales ($k > 0.05$ s/km). The effect is close to $50\%$ at $k\sim 0.1$ s/km, and persists at higher resolution. This can severely bias inferences in parameters such as the dark matter particle mass. By considering multiple initial conditions codes and their variations, we also study the impact of a variety of other assumptions and algorithmic choices, such as adaptive softening, background radiation density, particle staggering, and perturbation theory accuracy, on the matter power spectrum, the Lyman-$\alpha$ flux power spectrum, and the Lyman-$\alpha$ flux PDF. This study introduces novel constraints on the free-streaming of thermal relic warm dark matter (WDM) from Lyman-$\alpha$ forest flux power spectra. Our analysis utilises a high-resolution, high-redshift sample of quasar spectra observed using the HIRES and UVES spectrographs ($z=4.2-5.0$). We employ a Bayesian inference framework and a simulation-based likelihood that encompasses various parameters including the free-streaming of dark matter, cosmological parameters, the thermal history of the intergalactic medium, and inhomogeneous reionization, to establish lower limits on the mass of a thermal relic WDM particle of $5.7\;\mathrm{keV}$ (at 95\% C.L.). This result surpasses previous limits from the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest through reduction of the measured uncertainties due to a larger statistical sample and by measuring clustering to smaller scales ($k_{\rm max}=0.2\;\mathrm{km^{-1}\,s}$). The approximately two-fold improvement due to the expanded statistical sample suggests that the effectiveness of Lyman-$\alpha$ forest constraints on WDM models at high redshifts are limited by the availability of high-quality quasar spectra. Restricting the analysis to comparable scales and thermal history priors as in prior studies ($k_{\rm max}<0.1\;\mathrm{km^{-1}\,s}$) lowers the bound on the WDM mass to $4.1\;\mathrm{keV}$. As the precision of the measurements increases, it becomes crucial to examine the instrumental and modelling systematics. On the modelling front, we argue that the impact of the thermal history uncertainty on the WDM particle mass constraint has diminished due to improved independent observations. Recently, the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest flux auto-correlation function has been shown to be sensitive to the mean free path of hydrogen-ionizing photons, $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$, for simulations at $z \geq 5.4$. Measuring $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$ at these redshifts will give vital information on the ending of reionization. Here we present the first observational measurements of the Ly$\alpha$ forest flux auto-correlation functions in ten redshift bins from $5.1 \leq z \leq 6.0$. We use a sample of 35 quasar sightlines at $z > 5.7$ from the extended XQR-30 data set, this data has signal-to-noise ratios of $> 20$ per spectral pixel. We carefully account for systematic errors in continuum reconstruction, instrumentation, and contamination by damped Ly$\alpha$ systems. With these measurements, we introduce software tools to generate auto-correlation function measurements from any simulation. For an initial comparison, we show our auto-correlation measurements with simulation models for recently measured $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$ values and find good agreements. Further work in modeling and understanding the covariance matrices of the data is necessary to get robust measurements of $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$ from this data., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Ly$\alpha$ damping wings in the spectra of bright objects at high redshift are a useful probe of the ionization state of the intergalactic medium during the reionization epoch. It has recently been noted that, despite the inhomogeneous nature of reionization, these damping wings have a characteristic shape which is a strong function of the volume-weighted average neutral hydrogen fraction of the intergalactic medium. We present here a closer examination of this finding using a simulation of patchy reionization from the Sherwood-Relics simulation suite. We show that the characteristic shape and scatter of the damping wings are determined by the average neutral hydrogen density along the line of sight, weighted by its contribution to the optical depth producing the damping wing. We find that there is a redshift dependence in the characteristic shape due to the expansion of the Universe. Finally, we show that it is possible to differentiate between the shapes of damping wings in galaxies and young (or faint) quasars at different points in the reionization history at large velocity offsets from the point where the transmission first reaches zero., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Spatial variations in the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest opacity at $z<6$ seem to require a late end to cosmic reionization. In this picture, the universe contains neutral hydrogen 'islands' of up to 100 cMpc$/h$ in extent down to redshifts as low as $z\sim 5.3$. This delayed end to reionization also seems to be corroborated by various other observables. An implication of this scenario is that the power spectrum of the cosmological 21-cm signal at $z<6$ is enhanced relative to conventional reionization models by orders of magnitude. However, these neutral hydrogen islands are also predicted to be at the locations of the deepest voids in the cosmological large-scale structure. As a result, the distribution of the 21-cm signal from them is highly non-Gaussian. We derive the 21-cm bispectrum signal from these regions using high-dynamic-range radiative transfer simulations of reionization. We find that relative to conventional models in which reionization is complete at $z>6$, our model has a significantly larger value of the 21-cm bispectrum. The neutral islands also imprint a feature in the isosceles bispectrum at a characteristic scale of $\sim 1$ cMpc$^{-1}$. We also study the 21-cm bispectrum for general triangle configuration by defining a triangle index. It should be possible to detect the 21-cm bispectrum signal at $\nu\gtrsim 200$ MHz using SKA1-LOW for 1080 hours of observation, assuming optimistic foreground removal., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

Spectra of the highest redshift galaxies taken with JWST are now allowing us to see into the heart of the reionization epoch. Many of these observed galaxies exhibit strong damping wing absorption redward of their Lyman-$\alpha$ emission. These observations have been used to measure the redshift evolution of the neutral fraction of the intergalactic medium and sizes of ionized bubbles. However, these estimates have been made using a simple analytic model for the intergalactic damping wing. We explore the recent observations with models of inhomogeneous reionization from the Sherwood-Relics simulation suite. We carry out a comparison between the damping wings calculated from the simulations and from the analytic model. We find that although the agreement is good on the red side of the Lyman-$\alpha$ emission, there is a discrepancy on the blue side due to residual neutral hydrogen present in the simulations, which saturates the intergalactic absorption. For this reason, we find that it is difficult to reproduce the claimed observations of large bubble sizes at z ~ 7, which are driven by a detection of transmitted flux blueward of the Lyman-$\alpha$ emission. We suggest instead that the observations can be explained by a model with smaller ionized bubbles and larger intrinsic Lyman-$\alpha$ emission from the host galaxy., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Proximity zones of high-redshift quasars are unique probes of their central supermassive black holes as well as the intergalactic medium in the last stages of reionization. We present 22 new measurements of proximity zones of quasars with redshifts between 5.8 and 6.6, using the enlarged XQR-30 sample of high-resolution, high-SNR quasar spectra. The quasars in our sample have UV magnitudes of $M_{1450}\sim -27$ and black hole masses of $10^9$$\unicode{x2013}$$10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. Our inferred proximity zone sizes are 2$\unicode{x2013}$7 physical Mpc, with a typical uncertainty of less than 0.5 physical Mpc, which, for the first time, also includes uncertainty in the quasar continuum. We find that the correlation between proximity zone sizes and the quasar redshift, luminosity, or black hole mass, indicates a large diversity of quasar lifetimes. Two of our proximity zone sizes are exceptionally small. The spectrum of one of these quasars, with $z=6.02$, displays, unusually for this redshift, damping wing absorption without any detectable metal lines, which could potentially originate from the IGM. The other quasar has a high-ionization absorber $\sim$0.5 pMpc from the edge of the proximity zone. This work increases the number of proximity zone measurements available in the last stages of cosmic reionization to 87. This data will lead to better constraints on quasar lifetimes and obscuration fractions at high redshift, which in turn will help probe the seed mass and formation redshift of supermassive black holes., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Accepted in MNRAS

We present the first results from the JWST ASPIRE program (A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era). This program represents an imaging and spectroscopic survey of 25 reionization-era quasars and their environments by utilizing the unprecedented capabilities of NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) mode. ASPIRE will deliver the largest ($\sim280~{\rm arcmin}^2$) galaxy redshift survey at 3-4 $\mu$m among JWST Cycle-1 programs and provide extensive legacy values for studying the formation of the earliest supermassive black holes (SMBHs), the assembly of galaxies, early metal enrichment, and cosmic reionization. In this first ASPIRE paper, we report the discovery of a filamentary structure traced by the luminous quasar J0305-3150 and ten [OIII] emitters at $z=6.6$. This structure has a 3D galaxy overdensity of $\delta_{\rm gal}=12.6$ over 637 cMpc$^3$, one of the most overdense structures known in the early universe, and could eventually evolve into a massive galaxy cluster. Together with existing VLT/MUSE and ALMA observations of this field, our JWST observations reveal that J0305-3150 traces a complex environment where both UV-bright and dusty galaxies are present, and indicate that the early evolution of galaxies around the quasar is not simultaneous. In addition, we discovered 31 [OIII] emitters in this field at other redshifts, $5.3

Studies of rest-frame optical emission in quasars at $z>6$ have historically been limited by the wavelengths accessible by ground-based telescopes. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) now offers the opportunity to probe this emission deep into the reionization epoch. We report the observations of eight quasars at $z>6.5$ using the JWST/NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy, as a part of the ''A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE)" program. Our JWST spectra cover the quasars' emission between rest frame $\sim$ 4100 and 5100 \r{A}. The profiles of these quasars' broad H$\beta$ emission lines span a FWHM from 3000 to 6000 $\rm{km~s^{-1}}$. The H$\beta$-based virial black hole (BH) masses, ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 billion solar masses, are generally consistent with their MgII-based BH masses. The new measurements based on the more reliable H$\beta$ tracer thus confirm the existence of billion solar-mass BHs in the reionization epoch. In the observed [OIII] $\lambda\lambda$4960,5008 doublets of these luminous quasars, broad components are more common than narrow core components ($\le~1200~\rm{km~s^{-1}}$), and only one quasar shows stronger narrow components than broad. Two quasars exhibit significantly broad and blueshifted [OIII] emission, thought to trace galactic-scale outflows, with median velocities of $-610~\rm{km~s^{-1}}$ and $-1430~\rm{km~s^{-1}}$ relative to the [CII] $158\,\mu$m line. All eight quasars show strong optical FeII emission, and follow the Eigenvector 1 relations defined by low-redshift quasars. The entire ASPIRE program will eventually cover 25 quasars and provide a statistical sample for the studies of the BHs and quasar spectral properties., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We measure the mean free path ($\lambda_{\rm mfp,HI}$), photo-ionization rate ($\langle \Gamma_{\rm HI} \rangle$) and neutral fraction ($\langle f_{\rm HI} \rangle$) of hydrogen in 12 redshift bins at $4.85

Enhanced ionizing radiation in close proximity to redshift $z\gtrsim 6$ quasars creates short windows of intergalactic Ly$\alpha$ transmission blueward of the quasar Ly$\alpha$ emission lines. The majority of these Ly$\alpha$ near-zones are consistent with quasars that have optically/UV bright lifetimes of $t_{\rm Q}\sim 10^{5}-10^{7}\rm\,yr$. However, lifetimes as short as $t_{\rm Q}\lesssim 10^{4}\rm\,yr$ appear to be required by the smallest Ly$\alpha$ near-zones. These short lifetimes present an apparent challenge for the growth of $\sim 10^{9}\rm\,M_{\odot}$ black holes at $z\gtrsim 6$. Accretion over longer timescales is only possible if black holes grow primarily in an obscured phase, or if the quasars are variable on timescales comparable to the equilibriation time for ionized hydrogen. Distinguishing between very young quasars and older quasars that have experienced episodic accretion with Ly$\alpha$ absorption alone is challenging, however. We therefore predict the signature of proximate 21-cm absorption around $z\gtrsim 6$ radio-loud quasars. For modest pre-heating of intergalactic hydrogen by the X-ray background, where the spin temperature $T_{\rm S} \lesssim 10^{2}\rm\,K$ prior to any quasar heating, we find proximate 21-cm absorption should be observable in the spectra of radio-loud quasars. The extent of the proximate 21-cm absorption is sensitive to the integrated lifetime of the quasar. Evidence for proximate 21-cm absorption from the diffuse intergalactic medium within $2-3\rm\,pMpc$ of a (radio-loud) quasar would be consistent with a short quasar lifetime, $t_{\rm Q}\lesssim 10^{5}\rm\,yr$, and would provide a complementary constraint on models for high redshift black hole growth., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. Sheth-Tormen mass function has been widely used to quantify the abundance of dark matter halos. It is a significant improvement over the Press-Schechter mass function as it uses ellipsoidal collapse in place of spherical collapse. Both of these mass functions can be written in a form that is universal, i.e., independent of cosmology and power spectrum when scaled in suitable variables. However, cosmological simulations have shown that this universality is approximate. In this paper, we investigate the power spectrum dependence of halo mass function through a suite of dark-matter-only N-body simulations of seven power-law models in an Einstein-de Sitter cosmology. This choice of cosmology and a power-law power spectrum ensures the self-similar evolution of dark matter distribution, allowing us to isolate the power spectrum dependence of mass function. We find that the mass function shows a clear non-universality. We present fits for the parameters of the Sheth-Tormen mass function for a range of power-law power-spectrum indices. We find a mild evolution in the overall shape of the mass function with the epoch. Finally, we extend our result to LCDM cosmology. We show that the Sheth-Tormen mass function with parameter values derived from a matched power-law EdS cosmology provides a better fit to the LCDM mass function than the standard Sheth-Tormen mass function. Our results indicate that an improved analytical theory is required to provide better fits to the mass function., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. The influence of pump coherence on the entanglement produced in spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is important to understand, both from a fundamental perspective, and from a practical standpoint for controlled generation of entangled states. In this context, it is known that in the absence of postselection, the pump coherence in a given degree of freedom (DOF) imposes an upper limit on the generated entanglement in the same DOF. However, the cross-influence of the pump coherence on the generated entanglement in a different DOF is not well-understood. Here, we experimentally investigate the effect of a spatiotemporally highly-incoherent (STHI) light-emitting diode (LED) pump on the polarization entanglement generated in SPDC. Our quantum state tomography measurements using multimode collection fibers to reduce the influence of postselection yield a two-qubit state with a concurrence of 0.531+/-0.006 and a purity of 0.647+/-0.005, in excellent agreement with our theoretically predicted concurrence of 0.552 and purity of 0.652. Therefore, while the use of an STHI pump causes reduction in the entanglement and purity of the output polarization two-qubit state, the viability of SPDC with STHI pumps is nevertheless important for two reasons: (i) STHI sources are ubiquitous and available at a wider range of wavelengths than lasers, and (ii) the generated STHI polarization-entangled two-photon states could potentially be useful in long-distance quantum communication schemes due to their robustness to scattering.

Proximity zones of high-redshift quasars are unique probes of supermassive black hole formation, but simultaneously explaining proximity zone sizes and black hole masses has proved to be challenging. We study the robustness of some of the assumptions that are usually made to infer quasar lifetimes from proximity zone sizes. We show that small proximity zones can be readily explained by quasars that vary in brightness with a short duty cycle of $f_\mathrm{duty}\sim 0.1$ and short bright periods of $t_\mathrm{on}\sim 10^4$ yr, even for long lifetimes. We further show that reconciling this with black hole mass estimates requires the black hole to continue to grow and accrete during its obscured phase. The consequent obscured fractions of $\gtrsim$ 0.7 or higher are consistent with low-redshift measurements and models of black hole accretion. Such short duty cycles and long obscured phases are also consistent with observations of large proximity zones, thus providing a simple, unified model for proximity zones of all sizes. The large dynamic range of our simulation, and its calibration to the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest, allows us to investigate the influence of the large-scale topology of reionization and the quasar's host halo mass on proximity zones. We find that incomplete reionization can impede the growth of proximity zones and make them smaller up to 30%, but the quasar host halo mass only affects proximity zones weakly and indirectly. We present the Sherwood-Relics simulations, a new suite of large cosmological hydrodynamical simulations aimed at modelling the intergalactic medium (IGM) during and after the cosmic reionization of hydrogen. The suite consists of over 200 simulations that cover a wide range of astrophysical and cosmological parameters. It also includes simulations that use a new lightweight hybrid scheme for treating radiative transfer effects. This scheme follows the spatial variations in the ionizing radiation field, as well as the associated fluctuations in IGM temperature and pressure smoothing. It is computationally much cheaper than full radiation hydrodynamics simulations and circumvents the difficult task of calibrating a galaxy formation model to observational constraints on cosmic reionization. Using this hybrid technique, we study the spatial fluctuations in IGM properties that are seeded by patchy cosmic reionization. We investigate the relevant physical processes and assess their impact on the z > 4 Lyman-alpha forest. Our main findings are: (i) Consistent with previous studies patchy reionization causes large scale temperature fluctuations that persist well after the end of reionization, (ii) these increase the Lyman-alpha forest flux power spectrum on large scales, and (iii) result in a spatially varying pressure smoothing that correlates well with the local reionization redshift.
