This study examined the effects of sexual orientation disclosure, disability type disclosure (physical, psychiatric, no disability disclosed), and an applicant’s gender on employment interview ratings. Utilizing an experimental 2 × 2 × 3 analogue research design administered via Internet, a total of 424 undergraduate university students from a Southeast U.S. urban university volunteered to participate in the study. Volunteers were randomly assigned to one of 12 conditions in which a mock applicant’s sexual orientation and disability type were not disclosed. Participants reviewed resume and interview transcripts of the applicant they were randomly assigned to, and then rated the applicant’s qualifications, work skills, and their own personal comfort with disclosure. Participants were also asked to provide narratives regarding their decision-making process. A factorial MANCOVA revealed a statistically significant interaction effect for sexual orientation disclosure, disability type disclosure, and gender. Corneal transplant is the most common solid tissue transplant in humans. Advances in microsurgical techniques, eye banking and the use of corticosteroids have improved the success of corneal transplants. Over 65,000 corneal transplants are being performed worldwide annually. Most of these transplants are performed in developed countries. Cornea is considered an immune privileged site. Despite this, immune mediated graft rejection is the most single cause of cornea graft failure and is one of the major postoperative complications. Incidences from as low as 2% to as high as 50% have been reported depending upon the degree of vascularization. Rejection involves donor tissue recognition and various factors may influence this rejection. Major factors include the antigenic load of the donor tissue; other factors include death to enucleation time, methods and temperature of preserving the tissue. Host factors that may impact the graft include ocular surface diseases such as dry eye, chemical burns and autoimmune diseases such as mucous membrane pemphigoid. Following infection, surgery or trauma, cells of the innate immune system invade the cornea as a result of up-regulation of cytokines, cellular adhesion molecules and growth and angiogenic factors. These factors results in neoangiogenesis and lymphoangiogenesis, leading to immune activation and graft rejection. One hundred eigtheen Asian Indian immigrants completed questionnaires assessing behavioral accultur- ation, values enculturation, and perceptions of the psychological and medical determinants of case descriptions of major depression and schizophrenia, as well as treatment-seeking recommendations and stigma associated with treatment seeking. Case vignettes depicted symptoms meeting the Diagnostic and Statistical Manualfor Mental Disorders (4th ed., text revision, American Psychiatric Association, 2000) criteria for major depression and schizophrenia. Results revealed that responses to male case vignettes elicited lower levels of endorsement of psychological determinants and higher levels of endorsement of biological determinants in comparison to female case vignettes. Moreover, vignette gender moderated the relationship between behavioral acculturation and perceptions of the psychological basis of the disorders depicted in the vignettes. Both vignette gender and type of disorder moderated the relationship between years in the United States and perceptions of biological determinants. The study findings were consistent with traditional gender ideals among Asian Indians. Moreover, behavioral acculturation appeared to moderate traditional conceptions of masculinity toward greater recognition of the psychological bases of mental disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By far the most serious natural groundwater-quality problem in India derives from high fluoride, arsenic and iron concentrations. Fluoride removal from contaminated groundwater is practiced by pump and treat method; treatment is generally accomplished by addition of an aluminium sulfate-lime mixture to the pumped water or by permeating water through column of activated alumina. A magnesium-oxide-based method (termed the IISc method) has been developed to remove fluoride from drinking water. The IISc method relies upon the precipitation-sedimentation-filtration technique. Magnesium oxide addition to the contaminated groundwater removes fluoride ions through chemical reactions. The alkaline pH induced by magnesium oxide addition is neutralised by the addition of sodium bisulfate solution to the treated water. Interference from bicarbonate ions towards pH neutralisation is minimised by the addition of lime and calcium chloride solution to the untreated water. The IISc method has several advantages: chemicals used in the process are non-toxic, the process does not involve a recharge process and avoids the generation of corrosive and toxic wastes. This study reports experimental results and experience gathered during the course of a field investigation spread over a 10 month period using the IISc method for treating fluoride-contaminated drinking water in a village in Karnataka. ABSTRACT We demonstrate a prominent technique using intensity variation owing to a change in temperature of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) instead of just a shift of Bragg wavelength due to ambient temperature variation. The rising and falling region of chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) spectrum can be used as edge filter, where intensity variation can be observed with the shift in wavelength due to change in temperature. The proposed hypothesis of intensity variation with a shift in wavelength at rising edge of CFBG has been investigated theoretically and later on these results are verified experimentally. The rising and falling edge of CFBG are analyzed and then FBG was written on 1542.4 nm. The rising edge of CFBG have linear region in the range of 1542.3-1542.7 nm wavelength. Thus intensity will be modulated linearly with a shift of Bragg wavelength in this region. In-house fabricated FBG has been used and CFBG as an edge filter was implemented in our experiment to verify the proposed concept of intensity modulation. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background: Many details of the negative relationship between perceived racial/ethnic discrimination and health are poorly understood. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine racial/ethnic differences in the relationship between perceived discrimination and self-reported health, identify dimensions of discrimination that drive this relationship, and explore psychological mediators. Methods: Asian, Black, and Latino(a) adults ( N = 734) completed measures of perceived racial/ethnic discrimination, self-reported health, depression, anxiety, and cynical hostility. Results: The association between perceived discrimination and poor self-reported health was significant and did not differ across racial/ethnic subgroups. Race-related social exclusion and threat/harassment uniquely contributed to poor health for all groups. Depression, anxiety, and cynical hostility fully mediated the effect of social exclusion on health, but did not fully explain the effect of threat. Conclusions: Our results suggest that noxious effects of race-related exclusion and threat transcend between-group differences in discriminatory experiences. The effects of race-related exclusion and threat on health, however, may operate through different mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
