Abstract

The present work investigates the performance of TiAlSiVN coating with 5 and 11 at% of V concentration deposited on the Al2O3/SiC cutting tools during dry turning of austenitic 316 L stainless steel. The maximum flank wear reduction compared to the uncoated tool for coated tools with 11% and 5% V concentration was 85% and 67%, respectively. The Raman analysis indicated the formation of V2O5 in the cutting zone, which helps to reduce friction and machining forces for the coated tools. Overall, the presence of higher V content (11 at%) enhances the self-lubrication behaviour of the TiAlSiVN coating, accounting to lower fluctuations in cutting forces, superior surface finish, and lower flank wear when compared to the TiAlSiV5N coated and uncoated cutting tools.

Abstract

33. Performance evaluation of WC, SiAlON and SiCw + Al2O3tools in dry machining of Inconel 617

Abstract

Despite the fact that Inconel 617 has prominent industrial applications, the machining characteristics of the same alloy are relatively unknown. The present study, therefore, aims at comparative evaluation of performance of WC, SiAlON and SiCw + Al2O3tools under different cutting parameters during dry machining of Inconel 617. Solid solution strengthening due to Ni-Cr-Mo-Co phases and precipitation strengthening due to M23C6carbide present in Inconel 617 specifically lead to rapid rate of tool wear. Finite element (FE) simulation is carried out to predict cutting zone temperature and tool wear followed by experimental validation. The results indicate that WC tool performs well in terms of cutting force, temperature and surface roughness under the condition of low cutting speed of 50 m/min due to low tool wear. The effectiveness of WC tool rapidly deteriorates under high cutting speeds of 150 and 250 m/min. Ceramic tools outperform WC under the condition of higher cutting speeds in terms of greater resistance to crater and flank wear, cutting force, temperature and surface roughness. However, depth-of-cut notch and nose chipping are the predominant modes of tool wear for ceramic tools during machining of Inconel 617.

Abstract

This paper exemplifies the feasibility of expanding a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method to select optimum process parameters during the wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) of nitinol. The application potential of combined desirability function analysis (DFA) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) has been reported. Nitinol, a shape memory alloy (SMA), can memorize or retain its original shape when subjected to thermo-mechanical or magnetic loads. Four key input variables, like pulse on time ( T ON ) , pulse off time ( T OFF ) , wire tension (WT), and wire feed (WF) have been studied to optimize three correlated responses, like kerf width, material removal rate (MRR), and surface roughness ( R a). Process parameter permutations T ON = 1 2 0 μ s, T OFF = 5 5 μ s, WT = 8 kg-F and WF = 3 m/min were found to yield the optimum results. For the desired kerf width, MRR and R a , the optimum process parameters were also achieved expending Taguchi's signal-to-noise ratio. Validation results affirmed that the MCDM approach, AHP–DFA is a proficient strategy to select optimal input parameters for a preferred output eminence for WEDM of nitinol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Induction motor notably three phase induction motor plays dynamic role in the industry due to their advantages over other electrical motors. Therefore, there is an extreme demand for their intense and secure operation. If any fault and failures occur in the motor it can lead to uncontrolled downtimes and generate prominent losses in terms of revenue and maintenance. Therefore, premature fault detection is needed for the indemnity of the motor. In the current scheme, the condition examine of the induction motor are increasing due to its potential to diminish operating costs, enhance the intense of operation and enhance service to the customers. The condition examine of induction motor is an emerging technology for online determination of incipient flaws. The on-line condition examine involves taking measurements on a machine while it is in operating conditions in order to determination of flaws with the aim of diminishing both unexpected flaws and maintenance costs. In the present paper, a comprehensive contemplate of induction machine flaws, diagnostic mechanism and future aspects in the condition examine of induction motor has been discussed.
