Abstract

This paper presents the system submitted by the team from IIT(ISM) Dhanbad in FIRE IRSE 2023 shared task 1 on the automatic usefulness prediction of code-comment pairs as well as the impact of Large Language Model(LLM) generated data on original base data towards an associated source code. We have developed a framework where we train a machine learning-based model using the neural contextual representations of the comments and their corresponding codes to predict the usefulness of code-comments pair and performance analysis with LLM-generated data with base data. In the official assessment, our system achieves a 4% increase in F1-score from baseline and the quality of generated data.

Abstract

In this article, we propose a model (using a simple SIR model) for the analysis of the spread and control of COVID-19 pandemic in India after the subsequent lockdown(s) by taking into account the approach of partial measures, which, in fact, could be a mid-way approach between the two approaches of taking complete measures or no measures. Our supposition of partial measures (which put restrictions on the movements of some age groups) could be an effective protocol in controlling the spread of the coronavirus without hampering economic activities. The analysis has shown that there will be less number of infections after January 2021 by adopting partial measures. Overall, from the study, we have found some encouraging and significant results compared to the others in order to improve the economy of our country keeping the current pandemic in control. Abstract

Bacillus licheniformis DAS-1 and DAS-2 were found as potent tool for removal/uptake of arsenic [As(V) and As(III)] and reduction [(As(V) to As(III)] of arsenic from the liquid growth medium in our previous studies. Present work gives light on modulation of arsenic remediation (in terms of uptake and reduction) by two selected essential soil nutrients, phosphate (PO4)3− and nitrate (NO3)−. PO43− has structural analogy with arsenate [AsO43−/As(V)] that compete with cell uptake of As(V). It was found that enrichment of 0.75 mM of PO43− had significantly moderated the As(V) toxicity in liquid broth culture by retarding As(V) uptake. Lowering level of PO43− can lead to increase in As(V) removal from medium and vice versa. NO3− has strong oxidant properties which controls As(III) oxidation into As(V) in medium that resulted less toxicity favouring growth of bacteria and also more uptake via phosphate transporters. Hence, accelerated As(III) uptake has shown on enrichment of 0.5 mM of NO3− in medium. All the results of work give evidence that appropriate enrichment of PO43− and NO3− into liquid growth medium, can significantly contribute in alteration of efficiency for arsenic removal/uptake and reduction by bacteria from the medium.

Abstract

Arsenic (As) is a metalloid prevalent mainly in soil and water. The presence of As above permissible levels becomes toxic and detrimental to living organisms, therefore, making it a significant global concern. Humans can absorb As through drinking polluted water and consuming As-contaminated food material grown in soil having As problems. Since human beings are mobile organisms, they can use clean uncontaminated water and food found through various channels or switch from an As-contaminated area to a clean area; but plants are sessile and obtain As along with essential minerals and water through roots that make them more susceptible to arsenic poisoning and consequent stress. Arsenic and phosphorus have many similarities in terms of their physical and chemical characteristics, and they commonly compete to cause physiological anomalies in biological systems that contribute to further stress. Initial indicators of arsenic's propensity to induce toxicity in plants are a decrease in yield and a loss in plant biomass. This is accompanied by considerable physiological alterations; including instant oxidative surge; followed by essential biomolecule oxidation. These variables ultimately result in cell permeability and an electrolyte imbalance. In addition, arsenic disturbs the nucleic acids, the transcription process, and the essential enzymes engaged with the plant system's primary metabolic pathways. To lessen As absorption by plants, a variety of mitigation strategies have been proposed which include agronomic practices, plant breeding, genetic manipulation, computer-aided modeling, biochemical techniques, and the altering of human approaches regarding consumption and pollution, and in these ways, increased awareness may be generated. These mitigation strategies will further help in ensuring good health, food security, and environmental sustainability. This article summarises the nature of the impact of arsenic on plants, the physio-biochemical mechanisms evolved to cope with As stress, and the mitigation measures that can be employed to eliminate the negative effects of As. 25. Potential of sawdust for the removal of heavy metal ions from soil and aqueous solutions: a case study of Brassica junceagrown in contaminated soil from the Yamuna of Delhi

Abstract

Heavy metals in soil and water resources pose a grave threat to all forms of life, especially due to their bio-accumulative nature. Out of various low-cost adsorbents that have been applied for the removal of heavy metals from contaminated systems, sawdust is a comparatively unexploited and readily available adsorbent. In this study, we have tested the efficacy of sawdust obtained from the wood of mango tree (Mangifera indica)for the quantitative removal of heavy metal ions like Ni(II), As(V), Cr(III) and Pb(II) from their aqueous solutions. Mango tree sawdust proved to be an efficient adsorbent for removing lead, nickel, chromium and arsenic ions from their respective aqueous solutions. Further, to validate the efficacy of sawdust for heavy metal ion removal from natural ecosystems, soil samples were collected from the Yamuna river floodplains in Delhi and Indian mustard (Brassica juncea), known to be a hyper-accumulator of metal ions, was grown in these metal-laden soils. Using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), the amount of heavy metals have been determined in the dried and digested Indian mustard plants grown on soil treated with sawdust and the other without it, to draw a comparison and assess its efficacy for removing heavy metals from soil. Present results indicate that plants grown on soil mixed with sawdust have significantly lower heavy metal content. Thus, sawdust, a natural waste product from wood industry, proves to be a sustainable and low-cost solution for scaling down heavy metal ion pollution in soil and irrigation water, and subsequent toxicity in crops.

Abstract

Three arsenic hyper tolerant bacteria were isolated and identified as Acinetobacter calcoaceticus J1, Agrobacterium tumefaciens J2 and Bacillus cereus DAS3, with MICs (minimal inhibitory concentrations) were found 310, 300, 280 mM As(V) and 25, 3, 35 mM As(III), respectively. All the three isolates were found efficient in removing arsenic both As(V) as well as As(III) from the growth medium. Maximum removal of As(V) observed was 56.7% by DAS3 and of As(III) was 68% by J2. pH and nutrients strength of medium were found as factors to modulate the potential of As removal by bacteria. Maximum values of removal for As(V) was 64% by DAS3 on 20% dilution of medium and for As(III) was 76% by J2 at pH 8. Study of bacterial growth and chemical toxicity (DHA) had drawn picture of better arsenic [As(V) and As(III)] tolerance than other osmotic stress [NaCl or PEG 6000], indicating the existence of cross-protection between arsenic toxicity and arsenic generated osmotic stress.

The present study was conducted in Faizabad district of eastern Utt ar Pradesh. The purpose of the study was to assess the anaemic in hosteller and nonhosteller adolescent girls. Girls from Gomati Girls Hostel and NDUAT, Campus respectively which was selected. A total of 100 respondents 50 respondents from Gomati Girl's Hostel and 50 from NDUAT Campus with in age of 17-19 years were selected purposively in view of convenience of survey work. Self-structured interview schedule was prepared for background information. Biochemical assessment was used for assessing anaemia and for this Haemoglobin estimation was done. Body Mass Index (BMI) was assessed. It was found that non-hosteler girls were more anaemic as compared to hosteler girls. Abstract

The metalloid arsenic (Z = 33) is considered to be a significant potential threat to human health due to its ubiquity and toxicity, even in rural regions. In this study a rural region contaminated with arsenic, located at longitude 85o 32``E and latitude 25o 11``N, was initially examined. Arsenic tolerant bacteria from the rhizosphere of Amaranthas viridis were found and identified as Bacillus licheniformis through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The potential for the uptake and removal of arsenic at 3, 6 and 9 mM [As(V)], and 2, 4 and 6 mM [As(III)], and for the reduction of the above concentrations of As(V) to As(III) by the Bacillus licheniformis were then assessed. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for As(V) and As(III) was determined to be 10 and 7 mM, respectively. At 3 mM 100% As(V) was uptaken by the bacteria with the liberation of 42% As(III) into the medium, whereas at 6 mM As(V), 76% AS(V) was removed from the media and 56% was reduced to As(III). At 2 mM As(III), the bacteria consumed 100%, whereas at 6 mM, the As(III) consumption was only 40%. The role of pH was significant for the speciation, availability and toxicity of the arsenic, which was measured as the variation in growth, uptake and content of cell protein. Both As(V) and As(III) were most toxic at around a neutral pH, whereas both acidic and basic pH favored growth, but at variable levels. Contrary to many reports, the total cell protein content in the bacteria was enhanced by both As(V) and As(III) stress.
