Abstract

A high-intensity pulsed muon beam is becoming available at the at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Many experiments to study fundamental physics using this high-intensity muon beam are proposed. An experiment to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly ($g-2$) and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) is one of these experiments and it requires a tracking detector for positrons from muon decay. Fine segmentation is required in a detector to tolerate the high rate of positrons. The time resolution is required to be much better than the muon anomalous spin precession period while a buffer depth of a front-end electronics needs to be much longer than the accelerated muon lifetime. Requirements of this detector also meet requirements of a measurement of the muonium hyperfine structure interval at the J-PARC and another experiment to measure the proton charge radius at Tohoku University. We have developed a single-sided silicon strip sensor with a 190 $\mu$m pitch, a front-end electronics with a sampling rate of 200 MHz and a buffer memory depth of 8192, and a data acquisition system based on DAQ-Middleware for the J-PARC muon $g-2$/EDM experiment. We have fabricated detector modules consisting of this sensor and the front-end electronics. Performance of fabricated detector modules was evaluated at a laboratory and a beam test using the positron beam at Tohoku University. The detector is confirmed to satisfy all requirements of the experiments except for the time walk, which will be solved by the next version of a front-end electronics., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_{\mu} = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_{\mu}$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_{\mu}$ and $d_{\mu}$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_{\mu}$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. Abstract

Major construction and initial-phase operation of a second-generation gravitational-wave detector KAGRA has been completed. The entire 3-km detector is installed underground in a mine in order to be isolated from background seismic vibrations on the surface. This allows us to achieve a good sensitivity at low frequencies and high stability of the detector. Bare-bones equipment for the interferometer operation has been installed and the first test run was accomplished in March and April of 2016 with a rather simple configuration. The initial configuration of KAGRA is named {\it iKAGRA}. A maintenance remission period is important for AD patients. We developed a formulation for use during AD remission, containing heparinoid and pseudo-ceramide that forms a lamellar structure. We evaluated the allergen permeability and examined the formulation’s efficacy in maintaining remission in patients with AD.Materials and Methods: Seventeen AD patients applied a cream containing 0.3% heparinoid and pseudo-ceramide (test cream group, n = 10), or a general cream containing 0.3% heparinoid (control cream group, n = 7) to their arm for four weeks after inducing remission with the application of a steroid cream for two weeks.Results: The lamellar structure of the test cream was confirmed with small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering analysis and observation by transmission electron microscopy. The test cream inhibited the penetration of V8 protease significantly compared to the control cream in vitro. According to AD severity score by dermatologists, the effects remission maintenance of the test cream group were comparable to those of the control cream group. However, the test cream group had a significantly increased skin hydration value compared to the control cream group. A significant decrease in transepidermal water loss, an indicator of skin barrier function, was shown in the test cream group compared to the control cream group.Conclusion: The cream with lamellar structures containing heparinoid and pseudo-ceramides may inhibit allergen penetration. Moreover, skin properties improved during the remission period; thus, the formulation we developed was suitable for use during the AD remission period.Keywords: atopic dermatitis, barrier, lamellar, heparinoid, ceramide, skin hydration, transepidermal water loss

Abstract

Shintake monitor is a nanometer-scale electron beam size monitor. It probes a electron beam by an interference fringe pattern formed by split laser beams. Minimum measurable beam size by this method is less than 1/10 of laser wavelength. In ATF2, Shintake monitor will be used for the IP beam size monitor to measure 37 nm (design) beam size. Development status of the Shintake monitor, including fringe phase monitoring and stabilization, gamma detector and collimators, is described. Abstract

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been widely adopted in research on coronary atherosclerosis and adopted clinically to optimize percutaneous coronary intervention. In this Review, Jang and colleagues summarize this rapidly progressing field, with the aim of standardizing the use of OCT in coronary atherosclerosis.Since optical coherence tomography (OCT) was first performed in humans two decades ago, this imaging modality has been widely adopted in research on coronary atherosclerosis and adopted clinically for the optimization of percutaneous coronary intervention. In the past 10 years, substantial advances have been made in the understanding of in vivo vascular biology using OCT. Identification by OCT of culprit plaque pathology could potentially lead to a major shift in the management of patients with acute coronary syndromes. Detection by OCT of healed coronary plaque has been important in our understanding of the mechanisms involved in plaque destabilization and healing with the rapid progression of atherosclerosis. Accurate detection by OCT of sequelae from percutaneous coronary interventions that might be missed by angiography could improve clinical outcomes. In addition, OCT has become an essential diagnostic modality for myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries. Insight into neoatherosclerosis from OCT could improve our understanding of the mechanisms of very late stent thrombosis. The appropriate use of OCT depends on accurate interpretation and understanding of the clinical significance of OCT findings. In this Review, we summarize the state of the art in cardiac OCT and facilitate the uniform use of this modality in coronary atherosclerosis. Contributions have been made by clinicians and investigators worldwide with extensive experience in OCT, with the aim that this document will serve as a standard reference for future research and clinical application.

The appropriate use of OCT depends on accurate interpretation and understanding of the clinical significance of OCT findings. In this Review, we summarize the state of the art in cardiac OCT and facilitate the uniform use of this modality in coronary atherosclerosis. Contributions have been made by clinicians and investigators worldwide with extensive experience in OCT, with the aim that this document will serve as a standard reference for future research and clinical application. © 2022, Springer Nature Limited.

Abstract

The molecular beam epitaxy method is used to prepare (001)-oriented [Ni.sub.80][Fe.sub.20]/[Mn.sub.100-x][Pt.sub.x] and [Co.sub.90][Fe.sub.10]/[Mn.sub.100-x][Pt.sub.x] epitaxial bilayers. The uncompensated moment and torque curve were found to be dependent on the ratio of F/AF interfacial exchange coupling and the antiferromagnetic (AF) domain wall energy.
