Abstract

The use of lanthanide‐based metallogels presents a promising approach for the engineering of stimuli‐responsive gel materials. Stimuli‐responsive luminescent materials based on lanthanides have promising applications in bio‐applications and optical encoding. Synthetic supramolecular metallogels typically become kinetically trapped and usually do not exhibit time‐variable changes in their material properties. However, such supramolecular metallogels can switch between gel to sol when subjected to different external physical and chemical stimuli. This is because weak noncovalent interactions hold together the gel structure and are also influenced by the coordination dynamics of the metal‐ligand bond. This review summarizes recent research progress on stimuli‐responsive supramolecular lanthanide‐based luminescent metallogels. Chemical, physical, and multiple stimuli‐responsiveness of the metallogels are discussed elaborately based on the external stimulus sources. Finally, the latest challenges and opportunities for developing novel metallogels that respond to stimuli are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two flexible, branched, and sterically constrained di- and tripodal side arms around a phenol backbone were utilized in ligands H3L1 and H5L2 to isolate {Mn6} and {Mn3} coordination aggregates. 2,6-Bis{(1-hydroxy-2-methylpropan-2-ylimino)methyl}-4-methylphenol (H3L1) gave trinuclear complex [Mn3(μ-H2L1)2(μ1,3-O2CCH3)4(CH3OH)2](ClO4)2·4CH3OH (1), whereas 2,6-bis[{1-hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)butan-2-ylimino}methyl]-4-methylphenol (H5L2) provided hexanuclear complex [Mn6(μ4-H2L2)2(μ-HL3)2(μ3-OH)2(μ1,3-O2CC2H5)4](ClO4)2·2H2O (2). Binding of acetates and coordination of {H2L1}− provided a linear MnIIIMnIIMnIII arrangement in 1. A MnIII6 fused diadamantane-type assembly was obtained in 2 from propionate bridges, coordination of {H2L2}3–, and in situ generated {HL3}2–. The magnetic characterization of 1 and 2 revealed the properties dominated by intramolecular anti-ferromagnetic exchange interactions, and this was confirmed using density functional theory calculations. Complex 1 exhibited field-induced slow magnetic relaxation at 2 K due to the axial anisotropy of MnIII centers. Both the complexes show effective solvent-dependent catechol oxidation toward 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol in air. The catechol oxidation abilities are comparable from two complexes of different nuclearity and structure.

Abstract

Four different carboxylato bridges have been efficiently utilized for growth of three tetranuclear nickel(II) complexes [Ni4(μ3-H2L)2(μ3-OH)2(μ1,3-CH3CO2)2](ClO4)2 (1), [Ni4(μ3-H2L)2(μ3-OH)2(μ1,3-C2H5CO2)2](ClO4)2·1/2H2O (2), and [Ni4(μ3-H2L)2(μ3-OH)2(μ1,3-O2C-C6H4-pNO2)2](ClO4)(p-NO2-C6H4-CO2)·DMF·5H2O (3) and one dinuclear nickel(II)-based chain complex {[Ni2(μ-H2L)(μ1,3-O2CCH2Ph)2(H2O)](ClO4)·1/2(CH3OH)}n (4). These were obtained via the reaction of Ni(ClO4)2·6H2O with H3L [2,6-bis((2-(2-hydroxyethylamino)ethylimino)methyl)-4-methylphenol] and RCO2Na (R = CH3,C2H5, p-NO2C6H4, and PhCH2). This family of complexes is developed from {Ni2(μ-H2L)}3+ fragments following self-aggregation. The complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography and magnetic measurements. The changes from acetate, propionate, and p-nitrobenzoate to phenylacetate groups resulted in two different types of coordination aggregation. These compounds are new examples of [Ni4] and [Ni2]n complexes where organization of the building motifs are guided by the type of the carboxylate groups responsible for in-situ generation and utilization of HO– bridges with alteration in the aggregation process within the same ligand environment. Studies on the magnetic behavior of the compounds reveal that the exchange coupling within 1–4 is predominantly antiferromagnetic in nature.

Abstract

Five mononuclear RuII complexes supported by two pentadentate polypyridyl ligands, N,N‐bis(2‐pyridylmethyl)‐N‐(bis‐2‐pyridylmethyl)amine (N4Py) {[Ru(N4Py)(Cl)](PF6), 1Cl; [Ru(N4Py)(OH2)](PF6)2, 1Aq} and newly designed N‐benzyl‐N‐((6‐(6‐methylpyridin‐2‐yl)pyridin‐2‐yl)methyl)dipyridin‐2‐yl‐methanamine (N2Py‐MeBpy‐Bz) {[Ru(N2Py‐MeBpy‐Bz)(Cl)](PF6)·MeCN, 2Cl·MeCN; [Ru(N2Py‐MeBpy‐Bz)(OH2)](PF6)2·3H2O·MeOH, 2Aq·3H2O·MeOH and [Ru(N2Py‐MeBpy‐Bz)(MeCN)](PF6)2·0.5MeCN·H2O, 2ACN·0.5MeCN·H2O} were synthesized and characterized using different spectroscopic techniques such as UV/Vis, IR, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The physicochemical properties of complexes 1Cl and 1Aq, and structural analysis of 1Aq were reported by Kojima and co‐workers (Chem. Sci. 2012, 3, 3421–3431). Structural characterizations of 1Cl, 2Cl·MeCN, and 2ACN·0.5MeCN·H2O were done by using single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analyses. Catalytic water oxidation activities of aqua‐ligated RuII complexes, using CeIV as sacrificial electron acceptor at pH 1, were examined. Complex 2Aq shows higher activity as compared to 1Aq. Electrochemical study suggests that a formal [RuVI=O]4+ species is the active species which triggers the oxidation of water. Mechanistic investigation reveals that O–O bond formation takes place via water nucleophilic attack (WNA) pathway. The deactivation pathway of catalyst 2Aq has also been investigated. It was observed that complex 2Aq lost its water oxidation activity primarily due to ligand degradation via oxidative N‐debenzylation pathway. Chemically driven water oxidation activities of two mononuclear RuII‐aqua complexes supported by pentadentate ligand scaffolds were studied. A mechanism where a formal [RuVI=O]4+ species acts as an active intermediate triggering O–O bond formation via water nucleophilic attack is suggested. Abstract

Concentrating solar power (CSP) is an efficient way of providing renewable energy but it is still cost-prohibitive. Molten chloride salts can lower the cost of these power plants by pushing their operating temperature >720°C, thereby increasing their efficiency. However, these salts are very corrosive toward the steel alloys used in CSP. An inhibitor package was developed that when added to these salt blends can protect the steel surfaces by formation of a crystalline perovskite layer. Experiments showed that these chloride salt blends had favorable thermo-physical properties at high temperature. Successful formation of the perovskite layer was confirmed by various analytical techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
