Despite of being the drugs of the same therapeutic class (Benzodiazepines), each of them shows different actions prominently. It is commonly seen that Bromazepam, Clonazepam, and, Alprazolam are prescribed for the treatment of anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and phobias. On the other hand, Midazolam, Temazepam, Flurazepam, and Nitrazepam are indicated for the treatment of insomnia and Lorazepam is considered as a drug having anticonvulsant effects. As the mechanism of action is the same, there should be some differences in the binding patterns with the proteins that create differences in their impacts on the body. A deep screening of the binding patterns of the available Benzodiazepines in the market to the GABA A receptor will be beneficial to find out the responsible amino acids for being accountable for showing any specific action. This reveal will help design new molecules with the highest beneficial effect and lowest toxicity in the body. The original abstract follows.A new in vitro system for the detection of platelet dysfunction, PFA-100®, has been developed. It provides a quantitative measure of platelet function in anticoagulated whole blood. The system comprises a microprocessor-controlled instrument and a disposable test cartridge containing a biologically active membrane. The instrument aspirates a blood sample under constant vacuum from the sample reservoir through a capillary and a microscopic aperture cut into the membrane. The membrane is coated with collagen and epinephrine or adenosine 5'-diphosphate. The presence of these biochemical stimuli, and the high shear rates generated under the standardized flow conditions, result in platelet attachment, activation, and aggregation, slowly building a stable platelet plug at the aperture. The time required to obtain full occlusion of the aperture is reported as the "closure time." We have found that impairment of von Willebrand factor, or inhibition of platelet receptors glycoprotein Ib or IIb/IIIa with monoclonal antibodies or peptides, resulted in abnormal closure times. An antifibrinogen antibody, in contrast, failed to show any effect. The test appears to be sensitive to platelet adherence and aggregation abnormalities. Selective chemical reactions at precise amino acid residues of peptides and proteins have become an exploding field of research in the last few decades. With the emerging utility of bioconjugated peptides and proteins as drug leads and therapeutic agents, the design of smart protocols to modulate and conjugate biomolecules has become necessary. During this modification, the most important concern of biochemists is to keep intact the structural integrity of the biomolecules. Hence, a soft and selective biocompatible reaction environment is necessary. Electrochemistry, a mild and elegant tunable reaction platform to synthesize complex molecules while avoiding harsh and toxic chemicals, can provide such a reaction condition. However, this strategy is yet to be fully exploited in the field of selective modification of polypeptides. With this possibility, the use of electrochemistry as a reaction toolbox in peptide and protein chemistry is flourishing day by day. Unfortunately, there is no suitable review article summarizing the residue-specific modification of biomolecules. The present review provides a comprehensive summary of the latest manifested electrochemical approaches for the modulation of five redox-active amino acid residues, namely cysteine, tyrosine, tryptophan, histidine and methionine, found in peptides and proteins. The article also highlights the incredible potential of electrochemistry for the regio- as well as chemoselective bioconjugation strategy of biomolecules.

Introduction: Road traffic injuries (RTIs), particularly motorbike injuries, are one of the leading causes of death worldwide and have been a serious concern in low- and middle-income countries like Bangladesh. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and practices on road safety measures among motorbikers in Dhaka, Bangladesh., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2022 to December 2022 among 350 motorbikers of Dhaka city via a series of face-to-face interviews. Motorbikers who regularly ride a motorcycle were interviewed about their road safety knowledge and practices through a two-stage cluster sampling technique. Frequency distribution, independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed in data analysis., Results: Out of the 350 motorbikers, only 54.6% had good knowledge and 16.9% had poor knowledge on the signs and safety regulations of roads. Moreover, only 50.6% of respondents followed good practices while 23.4% followed poor practices of road safety measures. One-way ANOVA analysis demonstrates that the average knowledge score was significantly (p<0.05) higher among higher-educated, unmarried and non-smokers. Additionally, higher education level, non-smoking status and being Muslim were significantly (p<0.05) associated with good road safety practices., Conclusions: The overall good knowledge level and practices of road safety measures among the motorbikers was not satisfactory although the majority of them knew individual signs and regulations. So far, it has been difficult to directly compare diverse characteristic gelation mechanisms over different length and time scales. This paper presents a universal water structure analysis of several gels with different structures and gelation mechanisms including polymer gels, supramolecular gels composed of surfactant micelles, and cement gels. The spatial distribution of water molecules was analyzed at molecular level from a diagram of the relaxation times and their distribution parameters ( τ - β diagrams) with our database of the 10 GHz process for a variety of aqueous systems. Polymer gels with volume phase transition showed a small decrease in the fractal dimension of the hydrogen bond network (HBN) with gelation. In supramolecular gels with rod micelle precursor with amphipathic molecules, both the elongation of the micelles and their cross-linking caused a reduction in the fractal dimension. Such a reduction was also found in cement gels. These results suggest that the HBN inevitably breaks at each length scale with relative increase in steric hindrance due to cross-linking, resulting in the fragmentation of collective structures of water molecules. The universal analysis using τ-β diagrams presented here has broad applicability as a method to characterize diverse gel structures and evaluate gelation processes.

COVID-19 has been a threat to the entire world for more than two years since its outbreak in December 2019 in Wuhan city of China. SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent, had been reported to mutate over time exposing new variants. To date, no impeccable cure for the disease has been unveiled. This study outlines an extensive in silico approach to scrutinize certain phytochemical compounds of Nigella sativa (mainly the black cumin seeds) targeting the spike protein and the main protease (M pro ) enzyme of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2. The objective of this study is to investigate the extracted compounds with a view to developing a potential inhibitor against the concerned SARS-CoV-2 variant. The investigation contemplates drug-likeness analysis, molecular docking study, ADME and toxicity prediction, and molecular dynamics simulation which have been executed to elucidate different phytochemical and pharmacological properties of the tested compounds. Based on drug-likeness parameters, a total of 96 phytochemical compounds from N. sativa have been screened in the study. Interestingly, Nigelladine A among the compounds exhibited the highest docking score with both the targets with the same binding affinity which is -7.8 kcal/mol. However, dithymoquinone, kaempferol, Nigelladine B, Nigellidine, and Nigellidine sulphate showed mentionable docking scores. Molecular dynamics up to 100 nanoseconds were simulated under GROMOS96 43a1 force field for the protein-ligand complexes exhibiting the top-docking score. The root mean square deviations (RMSD), root mean square fluctuations (RMSF), radius of gyration (Rg), solvent accessible surface area (SASA), and the number of hydrogen bonds have been evaluated during the simulation. From the findings, the present study suggests that Nigelladine A showed the most promising results among the selected molecules. This framework, however, interprets only a group of computational analyses on selected phytochemicals. Coronary catheterization is usually performed using the transfemoral approach but trans-radial has been increasingly used as an alternative to transfemoral approach due to less vascular complications, earlier ambulation time and improved patient comfort. The aim of the study was to compare the safety and feasibility of trans-radial and transfemoral PCI in the elderly ACS patients. This prospective observational study was conducted in the NICVD, Dhaka from October 2017 to September 2018. Total 80 patients were categorized into two groups according to the approach of PCI. Group I consists 40 patients who underwent trans-radial PCI and Group II consists 40 patients who underwent transfemoral PCI. Patients with abnormal Allen's test, history of CABG, CKD were excluded. Patient's demographics were same in both groups. The mean procedural time in min (37.44±5.13 vs. 34.42±4.42, p=0.004) and fluoroscopy time in min (21.6±4.11 vs. 17.55±2.78, p=0.02) were more in Group I but the mean hemostasis time in min (7.58±1.11 vs. 15.59±3.33, p=0.005) and the ambulation time in hour (0.00±0.00 vs. 15.59±3.33, p=0.001) were more in Group II. Significant arterial spasm following puncture (10.0% vs. 0.0%, p=0.01) were more in Group I. Post procedural major bleeding (0.0% vs. 10.0%, p=0.004), minor bleeding (10.0% vs. 20.0%, p=0.004) were significant in Group II but vessel occlusion (5.0% vs. 0.0%, p=0.02) were significant in Group I. Transradial PCI is safe in respect of procedural and post procedural vascular complications. Transradial procedure leads to improved quality of life after the procedure and thus gives much comfort to the patient. It also shortened mean duration of hospital stay. So transradial approach is an attractive alternative to conventional transfemoral approach in the elderly.

Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) is the optimal reperfusion strategy in patients with ST elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). However, despite achieving TIMI 3 flow after PPCI, some patients have less optimal perfusion at the myocardial tissue level, as assessed by Myocardial Blush Grade (MBG) and consequently show adverse outcome. This prospective observational study was performed in the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Dhaka, Bangladesh from March 2016 to February 2017. Total 74 patients with STEMI who underwent primary PCI and achieved TIMI 3 flow were included among them 37 patients were taken with low MBG (grade 0 or 1) in Group I and other 37 patients with high MBG (grade II or III) were taken in Group II. Mean age of Group I and Group II were 53.70±9.17 and 51.49±9.41 years respectively (p=0.536). Male to female ratio was 5.7:1. Smoking (59.5% versus 35.1%, p=0.036) and diabetes mellitus (43.2% versus 18.9%, p=0.024) were significantly higher in low MBG group than high MBG group. Multi vessel involvement (24.3% versus 5.4%, p=0.022) and anterior MI (72.9% versus 51.4%, p=0.047) were significantly higher in low MBG group. LVEF was significantly lower in low MBG group than high MBG group (49.92?6.60% versus 58.84?4.55%, p=0.003). Among the complications acute heart failure was found significantly higher in low MBG group than high MBG group (8.1% versus 0.0%, p=0.048) along with total adverse in hospital outcome (24.3% versus 5.4%, p=0.041). In study population total mortality was 2.7% and all were in low MBG group (5.4%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed MBG was an independent predictor of adverse in hospital outcome after PPCI (OR 6.553, 95% CI 1.984-21.643, p=0.002). Low MBG is associated with more adverse in hospital outcome after PPCI. So, along with TIMI 3 flow following PPCI we have to assess MBG for evaluation of complete reperfusion and further outcome.

Citrus medica L. is rich in numerous vital bioactive constituents, though it is an underutilized among the citrus genus. Therefore, the aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the protective role of the C. medica fruit (CMF) methanol extract against carbofuran (CF)-induced toxicity in experimental rats. In addition, this work aims at detecting and measuring polyphenolic compounds by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and evaluation of the antioxidant activity of this extract. For this, studies dealing with serum hematological and biochemical parameters, liver endogenous antioxidants, as well as hepatic histo-architectural features have been carried out to assess the protective ability of CMF against CF-induced toxicity. Additionally, total phenol, flavonoid, and antioxidant capability were measured and the antioxidant action was investigated using DPPH and nitric oxide radical scavenging assays as well as reducing power assessments. HPLC results revealed the presence of benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, gallic acid, quercetin, and salicylic acid in CMF extract. Furthermore, results showed that CMF has considerable total phenol, flavonoid, and antioxidant capability and exhibits significant free radical scavenging and reducing potentialities. On the other hand, CF intoxication of rats significantly altered the hematological and serum biochemical parameters with hepatocytes disruption. Carbofuran also caused an upsurge in malondialdehyde (MDA) level and a decline in hepatic cellular antioxidant enzymes levels in rats compared to the control group. Co-administration of CMF amended the anomalies and improved the histo-architectural arrangement of hepatocytes in treated groups. CMF also inhibited the alteration of endogenous antioxidant enzymes and MDA levels as compared to the carbofuran treated group and returned them to their normal state. Taken all together, results from this investigation highlight the protective role of CMF against CF-induced toxicity which might be attributed to the polyphenolic constituents of the extract.

The aim was to formulate and evaluate Gel/PVA hydrogels as a pH-sensitive matrix to deliver methotrexate (MTX) to colon. The primed Gel/PVA hydrogels were subjected to evaluation for swelling behavior, diffusion coefficient, sol-gel characteristic and porosity using an acidic (pH 1.2) and phosphate buffer (PBS) (pH 6.8 & pH 7.4) media. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed to evaluate the chemical compatibility of the Gel/PVA hydrogel. The shape alteration and release of Gel/PVA hydrogel was conducted at pH 1.2, pH 6.8 and pH 7.4. The drug release kinetic mechanism was determined using various kinetic equations. The physicochemical evaluation tests and drug release profile results were found to be significant ( p < 0.01). However, it was dependent on the polymers' concentration, the pH of the release media and the amount of the cross-linking agent. Hydrogels containing the maximum amount of gel showed a dynamic equilibrium of 10.09 ± 0.18 and drug release of 93.75 ± 0.13% at pH 1.2. The kinetic models showed the release of MTX from the Gel/PVA hydrogel was non-Fickian. The results confirmed that the newly formed Gel/PVA hydrogels are potential drug delivery systems for a controlled delivery of MTX to the colon.

Bridelia tomentosa (B. tomentosa) is a traditional medicinal plant for treating diverse ailments. Hence, we designed our study to scrutinize the protective effect of the methanol extract of B. tomentosa leaf (BTL) against carbofuran-induced oxidative stress-mediated hepato-toxicity in Sprague-Dawley rats for the first time, along with the identification and quantification of phenolic acids and flavonoids by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and evaluation of antioxidant and antiradical activities of this extract. HPLC analysis confirmed the existence of tannic acid, gallic acid, salicylic acid, and naringin in B. tomentosa leaf extract which showed in-vitro antioxidant potentialities with DPPH, nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radical scavenging properties. Co-administration of B. tomentosa leaf extract with carbofuran showed dose-dependent significant protective effects of hepatic toxicity on serum markers such as alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, γ-glutamyl-transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, total bilirubin, total protein, albumin, globulin, lipid profile, urea, uric acid, and creatinine. Carbofuran intoxication also revealed an upsurge in malondialdehyde (MDA) and a decline in cellular endogenous antioxidant enzyme levels in rats compared with the control group. However, B. tomentosa leaf extract co-treatment increased the levels of hepatic antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, and amended the MDA level. Similarly, histopathological evaluation further assured that BTL could keep the hepatocyte from carbofuran-induced damage. Monitoring frameworks under a non-disaster scenario can be helpful to identify the various socio-technical constraints of local and regional origin which influence the economics and resources management of marine fisheries. However, local-scale manifestations of regional/global changes due to the rapid onset of a disaster scenario may lead to unprecedented distortion of the market demand-supply value chains for the fisheries sector at shorter temporal scales. The global pandemic of COronaVIrus Disease (COVID-19) provided a unique short, temporal window to study the evolution of socio-economic challenges to sustainable fishing in the Bay of Bengal (BoB), India. The present study provides a detailed multi-source assessment of the factors that lead to massive complications of market disruption beginning with a public curfew on 22nd March 2020, followed by a nationwide complete lockdown of 54 days beginning from 25th March 2020, indicating an "all-pain no-gain" scenario for the fishers. Aggravating factors as a cessation of food services, and the restriction of exports of perishable commodities indicated negative spin-offs for allied activities sectors such as food processing due to low or negligible demand. The present investigation also indicated that as part of rehabilitation, policies related to overfishing are necessary to promote sustainable fishing practices in the BoB region in a post-pandemic period. New policy frameworks must consider the community-centric factors which facilitated the alleviation of the impacts of anthropogenic activities related to fishing and the slow restoration of the demand-supply chain, with long-term benefits for natural resources sustenance and to aid marine conservation efforts., (© 2021 The Authors.)

Solvent interactions with adsorbed moieties involved in surface reactions are often believed to be similar for different metal surfaces. However, solvents alter the electronic structures of surface atoms, which in turn affects their interaction with adsorbed moieties. To reveal the importance of metal identity on aqueous solvent effects in heterogeneous catalysis, we studied solvent effects on the activation free energies of the O-H and C-H bond cleavages of ethylene glycol over the (111) facet of six transition metals (Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au) using an explicit solvation approach based on a hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) description of the potential energy surface. A significant metal dependence on aqueous solvation effects was observed that suggests solvation effects must be studied in detail for every reaction system. Herein, we report knitting of a thiophenyltriazine-based porous organic polymer (TTPOP) with high surface area and high abundance of nitrogen and sulfur sites, synthesized through a simple one-step Friedel-Crafts reaction of 2,4,6-tri(thiophen-2-yl)-1,3,5-triazine and formaldehyde dimethyl acetal in the presence of anhydrous FeCl 3 , and thereafter grafting of Cu(OAc) 2 ·H 2 O in the porous polymer framework to achieve the potential catalyst (Cu II -TTPOP). TTPOP and Cu II -TTPOP were characterized thoroughly utilizing solid-state 13 C-CP MAS NMR, Fourier transform infrared, wide-angle powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and surface imaging by transmission electron microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The porosity of the nanomaterials was observed in the surface imaging and verified through conducting N 2 gas adsorption techniques. Keeping in mind the tremendous importance of C-C and C-N coupling and cyclization processes, the newly synthesized Cu II -TTPOP was employed successfully for a wide range of organic catalytic transformations under mild conditions to afford directly valuable diindolylmethanes and spiro-analogues, phthalimidines, propargyl amines, and their sugar-based chiral compounds with high yields using readily available substrates. In folk medicines, Justicia gendarussa ( J. gendarussa ) is used as a depurative herb for treating fever, pain, and cancer and as laxative for constipation. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of the leaf methanol extract of J. gendarussa leaf (J gMe) against carbofuran (CF)-intoxicated liver injuries in Sprague-Dawley rats, along with the antioxidant activity of this extract. For this purpose, levels of serum diagnostic markers, hepatic antioxidant enzymes, and liver histo-architecture were employed to justify the protective efficacy of J gMe. In addition, the phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extract were quantified, and antioxidant activity was investigated using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl free radical scavenging assays. Results revealed that the leaf extract caused a significant (<0.05, <0.01) decrease of the level of hepatic enzymes, triglycerides, and bilirubin and an increase of the total protein. J gMe has also significantly (<0.05, <0.01) lowered the level of malonylaldehyde. Carbofuran markedly suppressed hepatic antioxidant enzymes, however, the leaf extract significantly augmented these enzymes. The hepatoprotective effect was demonstrated by the improvement in the histo-architectural features of liver sections of CF-intoxicated rats treated with J gMe at 500 mg/kg dose. In addition, J gMe showed moderate total phenolic and total flavonoid content, whereas the IC 50 values of DPPH, nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl free radical scavenging assays were 71.31 ± 0.42, 134.82 ± 0.14, 47.69 ± 0.38, and 118.44 ± 0.30 μg/mL, respectively. In conclusion, the present study suggests the protective role of J gMe against hepatic injury induced by CF, which may be attributed to its higher antioxidant properties and thereby scientifically justifies its traditional use.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients constitute a large proportion of admissions in coronary care unit and their management and risk stratification is of immense importance. A decrease in serum albumin concentration might be associated with an increased risk in the incident of both cardiovascular diseases and worse hospital outcome. We assessed whether serum albumin levels at admission was associated with in-hospital adverse outcome in patients with first attack of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The aim of the study was to evaluate association of serum albumin level with in-hospital outcome in patients with first attack of acute myocardial infarction. This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in the department of cardiology in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from March 2017 to February 2018. Total 374 patients of first attack of acute myocardial infarction included considering inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sample population was divided into two groups: Group I (Patients with acute myocardial infarction with serum albumin <3.5gm/dl) and. Group II (Patients with acute myocardial infarction with serum albumin ≥3.5gm/dl). Serum albumin level was measured within 24 hours of admission and the incidence of in-hospital major cardiac outcomes was observed. In this study mean±SD serum albumin level of Group I, Group II were 3.02±0.12gm/dl, 4.48±0.50gm/dl respectively. In Group I patient, 52(59.80%), 7(8.00%), 10(11.50%), developed heart failure, cardiogenic shock, arrhythmias respectively and 8(9.20%) died and in Group II patient 20(7.90%), 7(2.80%), 8(3.20%) developed heart failure, cardiogenic shock, arrhythmias respectively and 4(1.60%) died out of them and all of these outcome were statistically significant. Mean±SD duration of hospital stay of the study population according serum albumin level, in Group I, 5.76±1.83 days, in Group II, 4.40±1.22 days which was statistically significant (p<0.05). In conclusion, patient with first attack of acute myocardial infarction serum albumin level below 3.50gm/dl increased the risk of worse in-hospital outcome.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the protective effect of Syzygium cymosum leaf methanol extract (SCL) against carbofuran (CF)-induced hepatotoxicity in Sprague-Dawley rats, along with the identification and quantification of polyphenolic composition by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, and flavonoids in SCL. Similarly, HPLC analysis suggests that SCL contains some known important antioxidants, such as rutin, benzoic acid, and salicylic acid that could be responsible for the hepatoprotective activity of the extract. In CF-exposed rats, significant hematological alterations along with histological changes were marked by the presence of necrosis, congestion, and inflammation. CF-intoxication also showed an increase in lipid peroxidation and decrease in cellular antioxidant enzymes (e.g., superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) levels in rats compared with the control group. Furthermore, coadministration of SCL significantly ameliorated the abnormalities and improved the cellular arrangement in experimental animals. SCL also reversed the alteration of hematological and biochemical parameters and brought them back to normal levels as compared to the control group. In conclusion, S. cymosum may be one of the best sources of natural antioxidant compounds that can be used in the treatment of oxidative stress and stress-related diseases and disorders.

Design and successful synthesis of phenolic-OH and amine-functionalized porous organic polymers as adsorbent for postcombustion CO 2 uptake from flue gas mixtures along with high CO 2 /N 2 selectivity is a very demanding research area in the context of developing a suitable adsorbent to mitigate greenhouse gases. Herein, we report three triazine-based porous organic polymers TrzPOP-1, -2, and -3 through the polycondensation of two triazine rings containing tetraamine and three dialdehydes. These porous organic polymers possess high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas of 995, 868, and 772 m 2 g -1 , respectively. Out of the three materials, TrzPOP-2 and TrzPOP-3 contain additional phenolic-OH groups along with triazine moiety and secondary amine linkages. At 273 K, TrzPOP-1, -2, and -3 displayed CO 2 uptake capacities of 6.19, 7.51, and 8.54 mmol g -1 , respectively, up to 1 bar pressure, which are considerably high among all porous polymers reported till date. Despite the lower BET surface area, TrzPOP-2 and TrzPOP-3 containing phenolic-OH groups showed higher CO 2 uptakes. To understand the CO 2 adsorption mechanism, we have further performed the quantum chemical studies to analyze noncovalent interactions between CO 2 molecules and different polar functionalities present in these porous polymers. TrzPOP-1, -2, and -3 have the capability of selective CO 2 uptake over that of N 2 at 273 K with the selectivity of 61:1, 117:1, and 142:1 by using the initial slope comparing method, along with 108.4, 140.6, and 167.4 by using ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) method, respectively. On the other hand, at 298 K, the calculated CO 2 /N 2 selectivities in the initial slope comparing method for TrzPOP-1, -2, and -3 are 27:1, 72:1, and 96:1, whereas those using IAST method are 42.1, 75.7, and 94.5, respectively. Cost effective and scalable synthesis of these porous polymeric materials reported herein for selective CO 2 capture has a very promising future for environmental clean-up.

Surgical operations are impossible without administering proper analgesia. Advancement in the field of anesthesia has invariably resulted in the accomplishment of all surgical processes without any inconvenience. Admittedly, the use of noble gas is on the decline. The noble gases may not interact chemically with any other substance under normal temperature and pressure but they may interact with proteins and lipids. Different anesthetic molecules may stimulate either proteins or lipids in membrane. There is a connection between the anesthetic molecules and the hydrophobic region of the membrane. In the present review, we attempt to highlight the interaction between the anesthetic molecule with proteins and lipids and their effects. Background: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a combination of herbal medicine, traditional therapies, and mind-body intervention. This descriptive study was designed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, perception and self-use of CAM among Bangladeshi undergraduate pharmacy students. The study also evaluated their opinions about its integration into the pharmacy course curriculum., Methods: It was a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study conducted on 250 pharmacy students of five reputed public universities of Bangladesh., Results: This study revealed that majority of the pharmacy students were using or had previously used at least one type of CAM. Among the students, 59% had used homeopathy followed by Ayurveda (30%), meditation (29%), massage (13%), Unani (9%), yoga (6%) and acupuncture (2%). Students' attitudes towards CAM were influenced by family and friends, books and journals, the internet and to a lesser degree by health practitioners. A significant (p < 0.05) number of students had knowledge about CAM. A majority of the students (90%) had positive, while 10% had negative attitudes towards CAM. Lack of knowledge and trained professionals were found to be the major interruptions to CAM use. 84.45% acknowledged the importance of knowledge about CAM for them as future healthcare practitioners. Furthermore, the majority of the students also believed that ideas and methods of CAM would be beneficial for conventional medicine., Conclusions: From the findings of the study, it can be recommended that an approach should be taken to educate the students about the fundamentals of CAM use so that it may fulfill the professional needs of our future pharmacists.

A new series of porous organic networks (PONs) internally decorated with several free -OH functional groups has been synthesized through acid catalyzed condensation reaction of terephthalaldehyde and nucleophilic aromatic compounds. These materials possess high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface areas (592-865 m 2 g -1 ) and showed maximum CO 2 adsorption capacity of 4.31 mmol g -1 and H 2 uptake of 8.23 mmol g -1 at 273 and 77 K, respectively, under 1 bar.

A novel MnFe 2 O 4 -porous organic polymer (POP) nanocomposite was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method and using the highly cross-linked N-rich benzene-benzylamine POP. The nanocomposite presented highly efficient photocatalytic performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from pure water without addition of any sacrificial agent under one AM 1.5 G sunlight illumination. A photocatalytic activity of 6.12 mmol h -1  g -1 was achieved in the absence of any noble metal cocatalyst, which is the highest H 2 production rate reported for nonprecious metal catalysts. The photocatalytic performance of MnFe 2 O 4 -POP could be attributed to the intrinsic synergistic effects of manganese ferrite (MnFe 2 O 4 ) nanoclusters interacting with the nitrogen dopant POP with a unique mesoporous nanoarchitecture and spatially confined growth of MnFe 2 O 4 in the interconnected POP network, leading to high visible-light absorption with fast electron transport., (© 2016 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Ag nanoparticles (NPs) has been supported over a porous Co(II)-salicylate metal-organic framework to yield a new nanocatalyst AgNPs/Co-MOF and it has been thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS) and N2 adsorption/desorption analysis. The AgNPs/Co-MOF material showed high catalytic activity in the carboxylation of terminal alkynes via CO2 fixation reaction to yield alkynyl carboxylic acids under very mild conditions. Due to the presence of highly reactive AgNPs bound at the porous MOF framework the reaction proceeded smoothly at 1atm CO2 pressure. Moreover, the catalyst is very convenient to handle and it can be reused for several reaction cycles without appreciable loss of catalytic activity in this CO2 fixation reaction, which suggested a promising future of AgNPs/Co-MOF nanocatalyst., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Silver nanoparticle immobilized mesoporous cross-linked polyacrylic acid (Ag-MCP-1) has been synthesized via aqueous-phase polymerization of acrylic acid followed by the surface immobilization with silver nanoparticles. The nanocomposite material has been characterized by different spectroscopic techniques. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the formation of silver nanoparticles, while transmission electron microscope image showed that Ag nanoparticles are formed and uniformly dispersed in the mesoporous polyacrylic acid. The Ag-MCP-1 nanocomposite can be used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in the reductive coupling of nitrobenzenes and alcohols using glycerol as hydrogen source. We have synthesized Ag@polypyrrole nanomaterial by dispersing ultrafine silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) over the organic polymer polypyrrole. The Ag@polypyrrole material has been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible absorption (UV-vis) and atomic adsorption spectroscopy (AAS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The XRD pattern suggested the cubic crystalline phase of Ag NPs in Ag@polypyrrole. TEM image analysis revealed that silver nanoparticles are highly dispersed in the polymer matrix. The Ag@polypyrrole acts as an efficient and versatile heterogeneous nanocatalyst in the N-alkylation of amines using alcohols. Nanoparticles have been used for many functional materials in nano-sciences and photo-catalyzing surface chemistry. The titanium oxide nanoparticles will be useful for the treatment of tumor by laser and/or ultrasound as the sensitizers in nano-medicine. We have studied the combination therapy of photo- and sono-dynamic therapies in an animal tumor model. Oral-administration of two sensitizers titanium oxide, 0.2%-TiO 2 nanoparticles for sono-dynamic and 1 mM 5-aminolevulinic acid for photodynamic therapies have resulted in the best combination therapeutic effects for the cancer treatment. Our light microscopic and Raman spectroscopic studies revealed that the titanium nanoparticles were distributed inside the blood vessel of the cancer tissue (1-3 μm sizes). Among these nanoparticles with a broad size distribution, only particular-sized particles could penetrate through the blood vessel of the cancer tissue, while other particles may only exhibit the side effects in the model mouse. Therefore, it may be necessary to separate the optimum size particles. For this purpose we have separated TiO 2 nanoparticles by countercurrent chromatography with a flat coiled column (1.6 mm ID) immersed in an ultrasonic bath (42 KHz). Separation was performed with a two-phase solvent system composed of 1-butanol-acetic acid-water at a volume ratio of 4:1:5 at a flow rate of 0.1 ml/min. Countercurrent chromatographic separation yielded fractions containing particle aggregates at 31 and 4400 nm in diameter.

We have developed a new green chemical approach for the shape-controlled synthesis of single-crystalline hematite nanocrystals in aqueous medium. FESEM, HRTEM and SAED techniques were used to determine the morphology and crystallographic orientations of each nanocrystal and its exposed facets. PXRD and HRTEM techniques revealed that the nanocrystals are single crystalline in nature; twins and stacking faults were not detected in these nanocrystals. The structural, vibrational, and electronic spectra of these nanocrystals were highly dependent on their shape. Different shaped hematite nanocrystals with distinct crystallographic planes have been synthesized under similar reaction conditions, which can be desired as a model for the purpose of properties comparison with the nanocrystals prepared under different reaction conditions. Here we investigated the photocatalytic performance of these different shaped-nanocrystals for methyl orange degradation in the presence of white light (λ > 420 nm). In this study, we found that the density of surface Fe(3+) ions in particular facets was the key factor for the photocatalytic activity and was higher on the bitruncated-dodecahedron shape nanocrystals by coexposed {104}, {100} and {001} facets, attributing to higher catalytic activity. The catalytic activity of different exposed facet nanocrystals were as follows: {104} + {100} + {001} (bitruncated-dodecahedron) > {101} + {001} (bitruncated-octahedron) > {001} + {110} (nanorods) > {012} (nanocuboid) which provided the direct evidence of exposed facet-driven photocatalytic activity. The nanocrystals were easily recoverable using an external magnet and reused at least six times without significant loss of its catalytic activity.

A novel strategy has been adopted for the construction of a copolymer of benzene-benzylamine-1 (BBA-1), which is a porous organic polymer (POP) with a high BET surface area, through Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzylamine and benzene by using formaldehyde dimethyl acetal as a cross-linker and anhydrous FeCl3 as a promoter. Ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru NPs) were successfully distributed in the interior cavities of polymers through NaBH4, ethylene glycol, and hydrothermal reduction routes, which delivered Ru-A, Ru-B, and Ru-C materials, respectively, and avoided aggregation of metal NPs. Homogeneous dispersion, the nanoconfinement effect of the polymer, and the oxidation state of Ru NPs were verified by employing TEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping, cross polarization magic-angle spinning (13)C NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analytical tools. These three new Ru-based POP materials exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the hydrogenation of nitroarenes at RT (with a reaction time of only ≈ 30 min), with high conversion, selectivity, stability, and recyclability for several catalytic cycles, compared with other traditional materials, such as Ru@C, Ru@SiO2, and Ru@TiO2, but no clear agglomeration or loss of catalytic activity was observed. The high catalytic performance of the ruthenium-based POP materials is due to the synergetic effect of nanoconfinement and electron donation offered by the 3D POP network. The gel-liquid crystal phase transition has been studied by the temperature and frequency dependent dielectric relaxation behavior of liposomes in an aqueous solution (40 g L(-1) DPPC-water mixture). Four relaxation processes were observed in the frequency range from 40 Hz to 30 GHz which were ascribed to different molecular mechanisms, related to the structural units of the system. The gel-liquid crystal phase transition was also described very accurately from the temperature-dependent dielectric relaxation strength, relaxation time and symmetric shape parameter of the relaxation functions obtained from the fitting procedure. Relaxation process 3, obtained from the dielectric fitting procedure, was confirmed by dielectric modulus analysis. A comparison of the lipid membrane with non-biological systems like liquid crystals was performed. It was determined that the lipid membrane has a ferroelectric liquid crystal like behavior. Process 3 is comparable to the soft mode relaxation process observed in ferroelectric liquid crystals which was detected close to the smectic-C*-smectic-A phase transition. Differential scanning calorimetry was also used to confirm the gel-liquid crystal phase transition of this mixture.

Dependence of the backbone planarity of oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene)s (OPEs) on the intrinsic electronic character of substituents and on the nature of the solvent has been experimentally demonstrated with a series of center-symmetrical five-ring systems, pentiptycene-pentiptycene-arene-pentiptycene-pentiptycene, differing in the substituents on the central arene. In frozen 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF), the adjacent pentiptycene units prefer to be in a mutually twisted orientation when the substituents are electron-withdrawing (F and amido), resulting in a TPPT or TTTT conformation, whereas a planarized PPPP backbone is favored in the case of electron-donating substituents (alkyl and alkoxy). The propensity to adopt the PPPP form is generally enhanced by replacing MTHF with either methylcyclohexane or mixed ethanol/methanol as solvent. These observations reveal that the twist between adjacent pentiptycene units in OPEs is a consequence of the electronic rather than steric effects of iptycenyl substituents. The electronic effect of iptycenyl substituents is manifested in decreased phenylene π polarizability as the net effect of both electron-donating hyperconjugation and an electron-withdrawing inductive effect. Variable-temperature electronic absorption and emission spectroscopies are the critical tools for this work. A new ruthenium-grafted mesoporous organic polymer Ru-MPTAT-1 has been synthesized via simple and facile in situ radical polymerization of 2,4,6-triallyloxy-1,3,5-triazine (TAT) in aqueous medium in the presence of an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate) as a template, followed by grafting of Ru(II) onto its surface. Ru-MPTAT-1 has been characterized by elemental analysis, powder XRD, HRTEM, FT-IR, UV-vis DRS, TG-DTA, FESEM and XPS characterization tools. The Ru-MPTAT-1 material showed very good catalytic activity in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction for aryl halides and transfer hydrogenation reaction for a series of carbonyl compounds. The catalyst is easily recoverable from the reaction mixture and can be reused several times without appreciable loss of catalytic activity in the above reactions. Highly dispersed and strongly bound Ru(II) sites at the mesoporous polymer surface could be responsible for the observed high activity of the Ru-MPTAT-1 catalyst in these reactions.
