1. Microwave power absorption to high energy electrons in the ECR ion thruster

Abstract

The microwave power absorption efficiency of the mu10 ECR ion thruster, utilized in the Japanese asteroid explorers Hayabusa and Hayabusa2, is investigated in order to allow performance measurement and provide information for its improvement. A model detailing the local electron behavior in a real ECR plasma discharge, based the magnetic field characteristics, is presented. Three methods to evaluate the microwave power absorption efficiency are proposed: an estimation based on the chamber geometry and magnetic field characteristics, a measuremen based on performance parameters and a measurement performed with Langmuir probes. The equations used for each method are analytically derived. The local electron behavior model is confirmed with a Langmuir probe experiment. Measurement of the microwave power absorption efficiency is performed with the two independent methods proposed. Results from the two experiments show good agreement with each other and with the theory. Finally, a diffusion model explaining the different electron temperature distributions observed in the chamber is proposed. The model and experiments clarify the physics behind previously observed performance variations and give valuable hints for future chamber improvement.

Abstract

An understanding of the plasma physics inside a microwave discharge cathode is key to extending the lifetime of microwave ion thruster systems. However, probes can only measure the plume region due to their low spatial resolution and electromagnetic disturbance. In this study, we develop a microwave discharge-based cathode with a small optical window in the discharge chamber that provides visual access to the cathode interior. The cathode has the same anode currents as those of a flight model in the diode mode (anode voltage error is within 7%). Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy is applied to the cathode. The axial and radial ion velocity distribution functions (IVDFs) in the plume region and the axial IVDFs inside the cathode are measured. The measured functions, which represent the number density of Xe II (3P2)6p[3]5/2, are compared to a previously reported number density of Xe II measured by an electrostatic probe in the plume region. The functions exhibit multimodal characteristics. Theoretical models based on the measured current oscillation support these characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Multiutility Spacecraft Charging Analysis Tool (MUSCAT), a spacecraft charging analysis software, has been developed as a collaboration work between Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Kyushu Institute of Technology. Laboratory experiments for fundamental code validation were carried out in both facilities' plasma chambers. MUSCAT is a particle simulation code based on particle-in-cell (PIC) and particle tracking (PT) algorithms capable of calculating the floating-body potential of a spacecraft with respect to the plasma potential. Three experiments were carried out regarding spacecraft--plasma interaction phenomena important in LEO and PEO. A Langmuir probe was used to measure the current collection and potential distribution in static plasma to validate the PIC and PT schemes. The floating potential of an object in plasma with an energetic electron component was measured to validate the floating-body calculation as well as the PT scheme. Current collection and potential distribution in the wake structure were measured to validate the PIC and PT scheme in flowing plasma condition. The experimental results and the simulation results agreed very well in all the three experiments, validating the accuracy of the MUSCAT solver. Abstract

Microwave discharge ion engines '[micro]10' are dedicated to the main propulsion on the HAYABUSA asteroid explorer. In a development program, various tests and assessments were conducted on the ion engines and the spacecraft. They include endurance tests, an electromagnetic interference susceptibility test, an interference test between the plasma and communication microwave, a beam exhaust test on the spacecraft, assessments on the plasma interference with a solar array, and so on. The spacecraft was launched in deep space by the M-V rocket in May 2003. After vacuum exposure and several runs of baking for reduction of residual gas, the ion engine system established continuous acceleration of the spacecraft toward the asteroid ITOKAWA. The spacecraft passed through a perihelion of 0.86 astronomical unit (AU) in February 2004 and an aphelion of 1.7 AU in February 2005, becoming the first solar electric propulsion system to travel this far toward and away from the Sun. The HAYABUSA succeeded in rendezvousing with the target asteroid in September 2005. Index Terms--Deep space maneuver, ion engines, microwave discharge, plasma interactions.

Abstract

Charging of a small electrically floated body, equipped with an unneutralized microwave ion source, was experimentally studied in a vacuum chamber. When a xenon ion beam of 16 mm in diameter was released from a cubic floating body, 10 cm on each side, the body was negatively charged at a rate of [I.sub.b]/C, where [I.sub.b] is the ion-beam current and C is the capacitance between the floated body and the ground. For large [I.sub.b]/C parameters, the body potential changes faster than the xenon ions can react. This simulation results in space-charge-induced potential oscillations, which are detected in experimental measurements and observed in numerical simulations. The time scale of the oscillation relaxation time was found to be at least several times, corresponding to the ion movements around the body. As expected, the steady-state potential of the floated body was relatively negative to the vacuum-facility ground at a value equal to the magnitude of the ion-beam voltage.
