Abstract

The effects of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) on renal sympathetic nerve activity, arterial blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature were investigated by administering IL-1beta into the cerebral ventricle of rats. The animals failed to exhibit the effects of IL-1beta when pretreated with cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin. The effects of administration of prostaglandin E were shown to be similar to those of IL-1beta.

Abstract

Two cases of renal lymphoma were reported. Case 1 was a 73-year-old, and case 2 was a 59-year-old female. Their chief complaint was flank pain. The findings obtained by CT and angiography were not compatible with renal cancer. The tentative diagnosis of case 1 was inflammatory disease or soft tissue tumor, and that of case 2 was renal subcapsular tumor. Histological specimen was obtained by open biopsy from case 1, and by nephrectomy from case 2. Immunohistochemical surface marker study revealed both tumors were B cell lymphoma. Chemotherapy (CHOP-Bleo, or PPA) in both cases and additional radiotherapy in case 2 markedly reduced the tumor size. Nevertheless, case 1 died 5 months later from recurrence, and case 2 died 14 months later of gastrointestinal bleeding. At autopsy, the renal subcapsular layer was infiltrated by lymphoma cells in both cases, and lymphadenopathy was not observed. Reviewing 16 cases previously reported as renal lymphoma, the capsular or subcapsular diffuse infiltration to the kidney is considered to be a characteristic feature of renal lymphoma.

Abstract

The cell morphology and expression of differentiated functions of primary rat hepatocytes on a titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) gel surface were investigated. Polystyrene culture dishes were coated with TiO(2) gel by spin-coating an ethanol solution of titanium n-butoxide, hydrolyzing in a humidity chamber and drying with nitrogen gas. The TiO(2) gel layer formed on the polystyrene dishes was transparent and robust, and its surface was quite flat. Rat hepatocytes inoculated on the TiO(2) gel-coated polystyrene dishes gradually accumulated with increasing culture time, and then spontaneously formed many hepatocyte spheroids at 90 +/- 21 microm diameter from about 3 days of culture. The diameter of the spheroids increased during the culture, and was 151 +/- 43 microm at 14 days of culture. Ammonia removal and albumin secretion by hepatocytes on the TiO(2) gel-coated polystyrene dishes were maintained at a high level for at least 14 days of culture compared with on a type I collagen-coated dish and a non-coated polystyrene dish. These results indicate that TiO(2) gel is an adequate material for hepatocyte spheroid formation and long-term culture of spheroids.

14. Thin Film Fuel Cell Based on Nanometer-Thick Membrane of Amorphous Zirconium Phosphate Electrolyte

Abstract

Novel thin film fuel cell based on the 100 nm-thick electrolyte of amorphous ZrP2.6Ox, working at 400℃, was demonstrated. The hydrogen permeable membrane fuel cell (HMFC) using a Pd foil as a nonporous solid anode was fabricated. Ni interlayer of several hundreds nm thickness was introduced between the Pd anode and the ZrP2.6Ox electrolyte in order to suppress the deterioration of the electrolyte nanofilm by the deformation of the Pd anode during hydrogen absorption. In the ZrP2.6Ox electrolyte the transport number of proton was unity at 400℃ as determined by an EMF measurement. The modification of the Ni anode surface by an ultrathin Pt or Pd layer effectively decreased the anode/electrolyte interfacial polarization. Consequently, the HMFC revealed the OCV of 1.0 V and the maximum power density of 1.8 mW cm^[-2] at 400℃.

20. Functional membranes. Present and future

Abstract

The present situation and the future development of the functional membrane are discussed. It is expected that functional membranes will play increasingly greater roles in the chemical industry of the coming decade. These membranes are formed from polymer films, liquid membranes or bilayer membranes. The two most important technologies based on the polymeric membrane are reverse osmosis and ion exchange. The liquid membrane is used for separation of ionic species; an extension of the solvent extraction process. By using appropriate ligands and ionophores, highly selective separations are realized. The active transport is made possible if the physical and chemical potentials are applied to the transport process. More advanced functional membranes may be designed on the basis of the synthetic bilayer membrane.
