1. A peptide chain release factor 2a gene regulates maize kernel development by modulating mitochondrial function.

Abstract

Mitochondrial protein translation that is essential for aerobic energy production includes four essential steps of the mitochondrial ribosome cycle, namely, initiation, elongation, termination of the polypeptide, and ribosome recycling. Translation termination initiates when a stop codon enters the A site of the mitochondrial ribosome where it is recognized by a dedicated peptide release factor (RF). However, RFs and mechanisms involved in translation in plant mitochondria, especially in monocotyledons, remain largely unknown. Here, we identified a crumpled kernel (crk5 allele) mutant, with significantly decreased kernel size, 100-kernel weight, and an embryo-lethal phenotype. The Crk5 allele was isolated using map-based cloning and found to encode a mitochondrial localization RF2a. As it is an ortholog of Arabidopsis mitochondrial RF2a, we named the gene ZmmtRF2a. ZmmtRF2a is missing the 5th-7th exons in the crk5 resulting in deletion of domains containing motifs GGQ and SPF that are essential for release activity of RF, mitochondrial ribosome binding, and stop codon recognition. Western blot and qRT-PCR analyses indicate that the crk5 mutation results in abnormal mitochondrion structure and function. Intriguingly, we observed a feedback loop in the crk5 with up-regulated transcript levels detected for several mitochondrial ribosome and mitochondrial-related components, in particular mitochondrial complexes CI, CIV, and a ribosome assembly related PPR. 4. Threshold reweighted Nadaraya–Watson estimation of jump-diffusion models

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new method to estimate the diffusion function in the jump-diffusion model. First, a threshold reweighted Nadaraya–Watson-type estimator is introduced. Then, we establish asymptotic normality for the estimator and conduct Monte Carlo simulations through two examples to verify the better finite-sampling properties. Finally, our estimator is demonstrated through the actual data of the Shanghai Interbank Offered Rate in China.

5. Nutrients recovery from piggery wastewater and starch wastewater via microalgae-bacteria consortia

Abstract

It is a worldwide challenge to manage the total cost and efficiency ofwastewater treatment. To enhance nutrients recovery from wastewaters, nitrogen-rich piggery wastewater (PW) and carbon-rich starch wastewater (SW) treated via photosynthetic microorganisms was investigated. The results showed that the recovery efficiencies of nutrients of PW and SW treated through the cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris and Rhodobacter sphaeroides, respectively, were relatively low. C. vulgaris could not grow on SW. The recovery performance of the mixture of PW and SW was highly improved via co-culturing C. vulgaris and R. sphaeroides. The microalgae-bacteria consortia was obtained by co-culturing C. vulgaris and R. sphaeroides. The recovery efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, chemical oxygen demand, and total nitrogen of the mixture of PW and SW via co-culturing C. vulgaris and R. sphaeroides were 100%, 96%, 97%, and 95%, respectively. Carbohydrate, lipid, and protein were the three main ingredients in biomass of photosynthetic microorganisms. The developed strategies were feasible to improve nutrients recovery from the nitrogen-rich and organic carbon-rich wastewaters.

Abstract

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers have been gel spun from pregelled PAN spinning solution. The pregelled solution had network structure with elevated spinnability, the as-spun fiber from which had more circular cross-section and reduced skin-core difference. Drawing was more effective in inducing the segmental orientation and crystallization in gel-spun fiber than in dry-wet spun fiber. The mechanical properties of the gel-spun fiber were better than those of the dry-wet spun fiber after multi-stage drawing. POLYM. ENG. Abstract

The article presents a study which compared dry-wet spun and gel-spun polyacrylonitrite (PAN) fiber. It states that PAN fiber spun from pregelled solutions had improved spinnability, and thus tended to have a circular cross-section and homogenous structure with decreased skin-core difference. Under the drawing technique, besides easier crystallization and molecular orientation occurrence, the gel-spun fiber was discovered to have better mechanical properties.
