We are concerned with efficient numerical methods for stochastic continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations (SCARE). Such equations frequently arise from the state-dependent Riccati equation approach which is perhaps the only systematic way today to study nonlinear control problems. Often involved Riccati-type equations are of small scale, but have to be solved repeatedly in real time. Important applications include the 3D missile/target engagement, the F16 aircraft flight control, and the quadrotor optimal control, to name a few. A new inner-outer iterative method that combines the fixed-point strategy and the structure-preserving doubling algorithm (SDA) is proposed. It is proved that the method is monotonically convergent, and in particular, taking the zero matrix as initial, the method converges to the desired stabilizing solution. Previously, Newton's method has been called to solve SCARE, but it was mostly investigated from its theoretic aspect than numerical aspect in terms of robust and efficient numerical implementation. For that reason, we revisit Newton's method for SCARE, focusing on how to calculate each Newton iterative step efficiently so that Newton's method for SCARE can become practical. It is proposed to use our new inner-outer iterative method, which is provably convergent, to provide critical initial starting points for Newton's method to ensure its convergence. Finally several numerical experiments are conducted to validate the new method and robust implementation of Newton's method.

In this paper we mainly propose efficient and reliable numerical algorithms for solving stochastic continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations (SCARE) typically arising from the differential statedependent Riccati equation technique from the 3D missile/target engagement, the F16 aircraft flight control and the quadrotor optimal control etc. To this end, we develop a fixed point (FP)-type iteration with solving a CARE by the structure-preserving doubling algorithm (SDA) at each iterative step, called FP-CARE SDA. We prove that either the FP-CARE SDA is monotonically nondecreasing or nonincreasing, and is R-linearly convergent, with the zero initial matrix or a special initial matrix satisfying some assumptions. The FP-CARE SDA (FPC) algorithm can be regarded as a robust initial step to produce a good initial matrix, and then the modified Newton (mNT) method can be used by solving the corresponding Lyapunov equation with SDA (FPC-mNT-Lyap SDA). Numerical experiments show that the FPC-mNT-Lyap SDA algorithm outperforms the other existing algorithms.

The existence and multiplicity of solutions for a class of non-local elliptic boundary value problems with superlinear source functions are investigated in this paper. Using variational methods, we examine the changes arise in the solution behaviours as a result of the non-local effect. Comparisons are made of the results here with those of the elliptic boundary value problem in the absence of the non-local term under the same prescribed conditions to highlight this effect of non-locality on the solution behaviours. Our results here demonstrate that the complexity of the solution structures is significantly increased in the presence of the non-local effect with the possibility ranging from no permissible positive solution to three positive solutions and, contrary to those obtained in the absence of the non-local term, the solution profiles also vary depending on the superlinearity of the source functions., Comment: 35 pages, 6 figures

In this paper, a homotopy continuation method for the computation of nonnegative Z-/H-eigenpairs of a nonnegative tensor is presented. We show that the homotopy continuation method is guaranteed to compute a nonnegative eigenpair. Additionally, using degree analysis, we show that the number of positive Z-eigenpairs of an irreducible nonnegative tensor is odd. A novel homotopy continuation method is proposed to compute an odd number of positive Z-eigenpairs, and some numerical results are presented., Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures

The Candecomp/Parafac (CP) decomposition of the tensor whose maximal dimension is greater than its rank is considered. We derive the upper bound of rank under which the generic uniqueness of CP decomposition is guaranteed. The bound only depends on the dimension of the tensor and the proof is constructive. Under these conditions, an algorithm applying homotopy continuation method is developed for computing the CP decomposition of tensors.

Its solution also preserves invariant subspaces on the whole orbit (the \textbf{Eigenvector-Preserving Property}). Such a flow is called a \textit{structure-preserving flow} and is governed by a Riccati differential equation (RDE). In addition, Radon's lemma leads to an explicit form. Therefore, blow-ups for the structure-preserving flows may happen at a finite $t$. To continue, we then utilize the Grassmann manifolds to extend the domain of the structure-preserving flow to the whole $\mathbb{R}$ subtracting some isolated points.

In this paper we construct super Yang-Mills theory in 10+2 dimensions, a number of dimensions that was not reached before in a unitary supersymmetric field theory, and show that this is the 2T-physics source of some cherished lower dimensional field theories. The much studied conformally exact N=4 Super Yang-Mills field theory in 3+1 dimensions is known to be a compactified version of N=1 SYM in 9+1 dimensions, while M(atrix) theory is obtained by compactifications of the 9+1 theory to 0 dimensions (also 0+1 and others). We show that there is a deeper origin of these theories in two higher dimensions as they emerge from the new theory with two times. Pursuing various alternatives of gauge choices, solving kinematic equations and/or dimensional reductions of the 10+2 theory, we suggest a web of connections that include those mentioned above and a host of new theories that relate 2T-physics and 1T-physics field theories, all of which have the 10+2 theory as the parent. In addition to establishing the higher spacetime underpinnings of these theories, a side benefit could be that in principle our approach can be used to develop new computational techniques., Comment: 43 pages (including 3 appendices), 1 figure

In the context of Two Time Physics in 4+2 dimensions we construct the most general N=2,4 supersymmetric Yang Mills gauge theories for any gauge group G. This builds on our previous work for N=1 supersymmetry. The action, the conserved SUSY currents, and the off-shell SU(N) covariant SUSY transformation laws are presented for both N=2 and N=4. The on-shell SUSY transformations close to the supergroup SU(2,2$|$N) with N=1,2,4. The SU(2,2)=SO(4,2) sub-symmetry is realized linearly on 4+2 dimensional flat spacetime. All fields, including vectors and spinors, are in 4+2 dimensions. The extra gauge symmetries in 2T field theory, together with the kinematic constraints that follow from the action, remove all the ghosts to give a unitary theory. By choosing gauges and solving the kinematic equations, the 2T field theory in 4+2 flat spacetime can be reduced to various shadows in various 3+1 dimensional (generally curved) spacetimes. These shadows are related to each other by dualities. The conformal shadows of our theories in flat 3+1 dimensions coincide with the well known counterpart N=1,2,4 supersymmetric massless renormalizable field theories in 3+1 dimensions. It is expected that our more symmetric new structures in 4+2 spacetime may be useful for non-perturbative or exact solutions of these theories., Comment: 25 pages

We construct N=1 supersymmetry in 4+2 dimensions compatible with the theoretical framework of 2T physics field theory and its gauge symmetries. The fields are arranged into 4+2 dimensional chiral and vector supermultiplets, and their interactions are uniquely fixed by SUSY and 2T-physics gauge symmetries. Many 3+1 spacetimes emerge from 4+2 by gauge fixing. Gauge degrees of freedom are eliminated as one comes down from 4+2 to 3+1 dimensions without any remnants of Kaluza-Klein modes. In a special gauge, the remaining physical degrees of freedom, and their interactions, coincide with ordinary N=1 supersymmetric field theory in 3+1 dimensions. In this gauge, SUSY in 4+2 is interpreted as superconformal symmetry SU(2,2|1) in 3+1 dimensions. Furthermore, the underlying 4+2 structure imposes some interesting restrictions on the emergent 3+1 SUSY field theory, which could be considered as part of the predictions of 2T-physics. One of these is the absence of the troublesome renormalizable CP violating F*F terms. This is good for curing the strong CP violation problem of QCD. An additional feature is that the superpotential is required to have no dimensionful parameters. To induce phase transitions, such as SUSY or electro-weak symmetry breaking, a coupling to the dilaton is needed. This suggests a common origin of phase transitions that is driven by the vacuum value of the dilaton, and need to be understood in a cosmological scenario as part of a unified theory that includes the coupling of supergravity to matter. Another interesting aspect is the possibility to utilize the inherent 2T gauge symmetry to explore dual versions of the N=1 theory in 3+1 dimensions. We construct N=1 supersymmetric field theory in 4+2 dimensions compatible with the theoretical framework of 2T physics and its gauge symmetries. We construct a field theoretic version of 2T-physics including interactions in an action formalism. The approach is a BRST formulation based on the underlying Sp(2,R)gauge symmetry, and shares some similarities with the approach used to construct string field theory. In our first case of spinless particles, the interaction is uniquely determined by the BRST gauge symmetry, and it is different than the Chern-Simons type theory used in open string field theory. After constructing a BRST gauge invariant action for 2T-physics field theory with interactions in d+2 dimensions, we study its relation to standard 1T-physics field theory in (d-1)+1 dimensions by choosing gauges. In one gauge we show that we obtain the Klein-Gordon field theory in (d-1)+1 dimensions with unique SO(d,2) conformal invariant self interactions at the classical field level. This SO(d,2) is the natural linear Lorentz symmetry of the 2T field theory in d+2 dimensions. As indicated in Fig.1, in other gauges we expect to derive a variety of SO(d,2)invariant 1T-physics field theories as gauge fixed forms of the same 2T field theory, thus obtaining a unification of 1T-dynamics in a field theoretic setting, including interactions. The BRST gauge transformation should play the role of duality transformations among the 1T-physics holographic images of the same parent 2T field theory.
