10. Impact of War on Ukrainian University Students and Personnel: Repeated Cross-Sectional Study.

Abstract: AbstractThis study aims to discern significant shifts in the impact of war on university students and academic personnel, from the war’s onset (March–April 2022) to eight months later (November–December 2022). Our research questions focus on the individual experiences affected by warfare, changes in mental health status, and factors accounting for these observed changes. This research is a repeated cross-sectional survey, conducted in two waves, in March and November 2022. Findings revealed a significant increase in the general fear of war (t(1018.4) = −9.79, p < .001), emotional and physiological reactions to war remained stable overall but escalated among those with relatives in the armed forces and decreased in subsets not experiencing significant shifts in well-being and emotional reactions to war. Burnout levels increased (t(723.2) = 2.06, p = .040), but decreased among those reporting no change in well-being due to the war. Results also reveal a significant increase in: being in blockade and/or under shelling (χ2(1) = 12.737, p < .001); lost (χ2(1) = 11.644, p < .001) and dead relatives (χ2(1) = 14.248, p < .001); worsening of chronic diseases (χ2(1) = 11.838, p < .001); relatives in armed forces (χ2(1) = 889.360, p < .001). Conversely, resilience did not significantly increase, although a trend toward its improvement over time was observed. Given the unpredictable and prolonged nature of the conflict and changes in the impact of the war, our study shows that more regular follow-up studies are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Cutting Cultural Ties? Reasons Why Ukrainians Terminate or Continue to Interact With Russian Culture Despite the Ongoing Russian-Ukrainian War.

Abstract: The study investigates the factors related to Ukrainian nationals' engagement or disengagement with Russian culture amid Russian-Ukrainian war. It explores the predictors of both continued engagement and reasons for terminating interaction, considering demographic, emotional, and circumstantial factors. A cross-sectional correlational design was used, involving 935 participants (305 continuing and 630 ceasing interaction with Russian culture). Participants completed questionnaires and detailed their engagement with Russian culture across various cultural items. Multiple linear and logistic regressions were conducted for analysis. The study found that factors like spoken language and coping strategies play a significant role in the decision to cut cultural ties. For those continuing interaction, language and emotional attachment were influential, alongside practical necessities like work/study requirements and the absence of Ukrainian alternatives. The study highlights a complex interplay of emotion, language, and age in shaping Ukrainians' interaction with Russian culture during the war. Abstract: Objective: This study examines the prevalence and predictors of mental health issues, specifically anxiety, depression, and stress, among Ukrainians during the military conflict with Russia. Method: A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted six months after the beginning of the conflict. Sociodemographic factors, traumatic experiences, anxiety, depression, and stress were assessed. The study included 706 participants, both men and women, from different age groups and living in various regions of Ukraine. The data were collected from August till October 2022. Results: The study found that a large portion of the Ukrainian population shows increased levels of anxiety, depression, and stress due to the war. Women were found to be more vulnerable to mental health issues than men, and younger people were found to be more resilient. Worsened financial and employment statuses predicted increased anxiety. Ukrainians who fled the conflict to other countries exhibited higher levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. Direct exposure to trauma predicted increased anxiety and depression, while war-related exposure to “other stressful events” predicted increased acute stress levels. Conclusion: The findings of this study highlight the importance of addressing the mental health needs of Ukrainians affected by the ongoing conflict. Abstract: Some public officials have expressed concern that policies mandating collective public health behaviors (e.g., national/regional “lockdown”) may result in behavioral fatigue that ultimately renders such policies ineffective. Boredom, specifically, has been singled out as one potential risk factor for noncompliance. We examined whether there was empirical evidence to support this concern during the COVID-19 pandemic in a large cross-national sample of 63,336 community respondents from 116 countries. Although boredom was higher in countries with more COVID-19 cases and in countries that instituted more stringent lockdowns, such boredom did not predict longitudinal within-person decreases in social distancing behavior (or vice versa; n = 8,031) in early spring and summer of 2020. Overall, we found little evidence that changes in boredom predict individual public health behaviors (handwashing, staying home, self-quarantining, and avoiding crowds) over time, or that such behaviors had any reliable longitudinal effects on boredom itself. Abstract: Understanding the determinants of COVID-19 vaccine uptake is important to inform policy decisions and plan vaccination campaigns. The aims of this research were to: (1) explore the individual- and country-level determinants of intentions to be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2, and (2) examine worldwide variation in vaccination intentions. This cross-sectional online survey was conducted during the first wave of the pandemic, involving 6697 respondents across 20 countries. Results showed that 72.9% of participants reported positive intentions to be vaccinated against COVID-19, whereas 16.8% were undecided, and 10.3% reported they would not be vaccinated. At the individual level, prosociality was a significant positive predictor of vaccination intentions, whereas generic beliefs in conspiracy theories and religiosity were negative predictors. Country-level determinants, including cultural dimensions of individualism/collectivism and power distance, were not significant predictors of vaccination intentions. Altogether, this study identifies individual-level predictors that are common across multiple countries, provides further evidence on the importance of combating conspiracy theories, involving religious institutions in vaccination campaigns, and stimulating prosocial motives to encourage vaccine uptake.

Abstract: Psychological research on the predictors of conspiracy theorizing-explaining important social and political events or circumstances as secret plots by malevolent groups-has flourished in recent years. However, research has typically examined only a small number of predictors in one, or a small number of, national contexts. Such approaches make it difficult to examine the relative importance of predictors, and risk overlooking some potentially relevant variables altogether. To overcome this limitation, the present study used machine learning to rank-order the importance of 115 individual- and country-level variables in predicting conspiracy theorizing. Data were collected from 56,072 respondents across 28 countries during the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic. Echoing previous findings, important predictors at the individual level included societal discontent, paranoia, and personal struggle. Contrary to prior research, important country-level predictors included indicators of political stability and effective government COVID response, which suggests that conspiracy theorizing may thrive in relatively well-functioning democracies.

Abstract: Virus mitigation behavior has been and still is a powerful means to fight the COVID-19 pandemic irrespective of the availability of pharmaceutical means (e.g., vaccines). We drew on health behavior theories to predict health-protective (coping-specific) responses and hope (coping non-specific response) from health-related cognitions (vulnerability, severity, self-assessed knowledge, efficacy). In an exten-sion of this model, we proposed orientation to internal (problem-focused coping) and external (country capability) coping resources as antecedents of health protection and hope; health-related cognitions were assumed as medi-ators of this link. We tested these predictions in a large multi-national multi-wave study with a cross-sectional panel at T1 (Baseline, March-April 2020; N=57,631 in 113 countries) and a panel subsample at two later time points, T2 (November 2020; N=3097) and T3 (April 2021; N=2628). Multilevel models showed that health-related cognitions predicted health-protective responses and hope. Problem-focused coping was mainly linked to health-protective behaviors (T1-T3), whereas country capa-bility was mainly linked to hope (T1-T3). These relation-ships were partially mediated by health-related cognitions. We conceptually replicated predictions of health behavior theories within a real health threat, further suggesting how different coping resources are associated with qualitatively distinct outcomes. Both patterns were consistent across countries and time.

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the ongoing war in Ukraine on the mental health of Ukrainians, focusing on war-induced trauma, disturbances in self-organization, post-traumatic stress disorder, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, stress, and depression. Method: Data was collected from 703 participants six months after the full-scale invasion using a structured questionnaire that included sections on socio-demographic information, trauma-related issues, and mental health. Results: The study found that levels of depression and anxiety were relatively low, while stress and resilience were relatively high among Ukrainians affected by the war. However, those who were directly exposed to military actions, physical violence, or severe human suffering had higher levels of anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma-related symptoms. The war experience varied by gender, age, and living conditions. Participants who stayed in Ukraine had significantly lower anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma-related symptoms compared to those who moved abroad. Anxiety, depression, stress, low resilience, and subjective satisfaction with living conditions were predictors of trauma-related symptoms, including PTSD and CPTSD. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the mental health of Ukrainians affected by the war was impacted differently depending on their level of exposure to violence and their living conditions. Additionally, the study identified several predictors of trauma-related symptoms, including PTSD and CPTSD, such as anxiety, depression, stress, low resilience, and subjective satisfaction with living conditions. Future research should further explore the relationships between trauma type, sociodemographic factors, resilience, stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD and CPTSD to better understand the mediation mechanisms underlying these relationships and to develop effective interventions to support the well-being of Ukrainians during this diffi

29. Air-raid alarms and explosions - impact on mental health and somatic symptoms

Abstract: In the past several decades, psychological research has often focused on negative aspects of people’s psyche, such as aggression, anxiety, racism, and so forth, at a pre-clinical level and on mental disorders at a clinical level (i.e., clinical psychology, psychiatry). But this has changed. In 1998, Martin Seligman established work on Positive Psychology (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000), which explicitly focuses on positive aspects of human life, such as mental health. In his book Authentic happiness (Seligman, 2002) he stated, “for the last half century psychology has been consumed with a single topic only – mental illness”. Meanwhile it is well accepted that mental health is not the absence of psychopathology; that is, both concepts – mental health and mental disorder - seem to be independent. Several attempts have been made to operationalize mental health as a form of well-being and not the absence of mental disorder (for a review, see Hone et al., 2014). A prominent approach, which is frequently used, is the concept from Keyes (2005). They assumed that mental health (i.e., social, psychological, and emotional well-being) and mental disorder (e.g., panic disorder, major depressive episode, generalized anxiety) constitute separate (although correlated) unipolar dimensions. They found evidence that participants with a mental disorder can also have good mental health, which they called flourishing (people with low mental health are languishing). In a large U.S. adult population, they found that besides mental disorders, only one fifth of participants were flourishing (i.e., had good mental health; Keyes, 2002, 2005). In another study it was found that adults with a mental disorder and moderate mental health (flourishing) functioned no worse than adults without a mental disorder but low mental health (languishing; Keyes, 2004). Therefore, both concepts (mental health, mental disorder) are largely independent, but both are important when it comes to living a fulfilling life. Although research on mental health is abundant (phrase search in Google Scholar yielded > 2.8 million entries), research about mental health in combination with flourishing well-being is still comparatively infrequent (92,000 hits, i.e., ~3% of mental health publications). Furthermore, research on predictors of mental health is rare and mostly done through cross-sectional studies. In the present study, we want to analyse potential predictors of mental health (i.e., flourishing well-being) in a longitudinal design by using an experience sampling method (ESM) approach. This means that participants will complete a survey at the end of each day via a smartphone app assessing mental health aspects (e.g., “I felt happy at least once that day.”; Mental Health Continuum – Short Form, MHC-SF) together with further questions about their behaviour and experiences during that day. Because predictors of mental health are probably very numerous, we will focus only on three core aspects (i.e., which are also central during the current war situation in the Ukraine): Air-raid alarms and explosions (number, closeness) and resulting outcomes (i.e., electricity outage, heating problems, water supply problems). The following situations will be assessed (for details, see Table 1): Air-raid alarms and explosions: air-raid alarms and explosions (because they warn of potentially life-threatening events) have the potential to activate mortality salience, i.e., attention to one's own death is made accessible (see Terror Management Theory, e.g., Solomon et al., 2004). Nevertheless, the scarce literature on that topic is rather mixed. For example, Sason et al. (2004) could not find any evidence that air-raid alarms raised the frequency of panic attacks in people with a panic disorder during the Persian Gulf War. Similar results have been found during the war in former Yugoslavia (Starcevic et al., 2002). The authors found no relationship between panic attacks and real danger (i.e., air strikes) although there were differences in fear, suggesting that panic attacks and fear induced by real danger are different phenomena. On the other hand, it is well documented that soldiers returning from war situations as well as civilians experiencing extreme war situations have a higher probability of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD; e.g., Johnson & Thompson, 2008). To sum up, the literature on the topic is equivocal and suffers from several limitations (e.g., small sample sizes, cross-sectional analysis rather than longitudinal, focus on mental disorder than mental health). To shed new light on the impact of war situations on mental health we plan the following design features: 1. A large sample in order to have an at least 80% probability of replication if the effect is true. 2. Design a longitudinal ESM study by assessing the concepts at hand during the everyday life of participants. This should support ecological validity by reducing biases (e.g., false memories, biased memories). 3. We will not focus on any specific clinical diagnosis but rather ask for physiological symptoms in general (e.g., headaches, trouble sleeping, dizziness). 4. We assess mental health (i.e., flourishing well-being) in addition to symptoms. We assess further moderating variables such as resilience, perceived stress, and socio-demographics (e.g., age, sex).

Abstract: We examine how social contacts and feelings of solidarity shape experiences of loneliness during the COVID-19 lockdown in early 2020. From the PsyCorona database, we obtained longitudinal data from 23 countries, collected between March and May 2020. The results demonstrated that although online contacts help to reduce feelings of loneliness, people who feel more lonely are less likely to use that strategy. Solidarity played only a small role in shaping feelings of loneliness during lockdown. Thus, it seems we must look beyond the current focus on online contact and solidarity to help people address feelings of loneliness during lockdown. Finally, online contacts did not function as a substitute for face-to-face contacts outside the home—in fact, more frequent online contact in earlier weeks predicted more frequent face-to-face contacts in later weeks. As such, this work provides relevant insights into how individuals manage the impact of restrictions on their social lives.

Abstract: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a global health crisis. Consequently, many countries have adopted restrictive measures that caused a substantial change in society. Within this framework, it is reasonable to suppose that a sentiment of societal discontent, defined as generalized concern about the precarious state of society, has arisen. Literature shows that collectively experienced situations can motivate people to help each other. Since societal discontent is conceptualized as a collective phenomenon, we argue that it could influence intention to help others, particularly those who suffer from coronavirus. Thus, in the present study, we aimed (a) to explore the relationship between societal discontent and intention to help at the individual level and (b) to investigate a possible moderating effect of societal discontent at the country level on this relationship. To fulfil our purposes, we used data collected in 42 countries (N = 61,734) from the PsyCorona Survey, a cross-national longitudinal study. Results of multilevel analysis showed that, when societal discontent is experienced by the entire community, individuals dissatisfied with society are more prone to help others. Testing the model with longitudinal data (N = 3,817) confirmed our results. Implications for those findings are discussed in relation to crisis management. Abstract: During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. conservative politicians and the media downplayed the risk of both contracting COVID-19 and the effectiveness of recommended health behaviors. Health behavior theories suggest perceived vulnerability to a health threat and perceived effectiveness of recommended health-protective behaviors determine motivation to follow recommendations. Accordingly, we predicted that—as a result of politicization of the pandemic—politically conservative Americans would be less likely to enact recommended health-protective behaviors. In two longitudinal studies of U.S. residents, political conservatism was inversely associated with perceived health risk and adoption of health-protective behaviors over time. The effects of political orientation on health-protective behaviors were mediated by perceived risk of infection, perceived severity of infection, and perceived effectiveness of the health-protective behaviors. In a global cross-national analysis, effects were stronger in the U.S. (N = 10,923) than in an international sample (total N = 51,986), highlighting the increased and overt politicization of health behaviors in the U.S., New York University Abu Dhabi

Abstract: Anxiety associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and home confinement has been associated with adverse health behaviors, such as unhealthy eating, smoking, and drinking. However, most studies have been limited by regional sampling, which precludes the examination of behavioral consequences associated with the pandemic at a global level. Further, few studies operationalized pandemic-related stressors to enable the investigation of the impact of different types of stressors on health outcomes. This study examined the association between perceived risk of COVID-19 infection and economic burden of COVID-19 with health-promoting and health-damaging behaviors using data from the PsyCorona Study: an international, longitudinal online study of psychological and behavioral correlates of COVID-19. Analyses utilized data from 7,402 participants from 86 countries across three waves of assessment between May 16 and June 13, 2020. Participants completed self-report measures of COVID-19 infection risk, COVID-19-related economic burden, physical exercise, diet quality, cigarette smoking, sleep quality, and binge drinking. Multilevel structural equation modeling analyses showed that across three time points, perceived economic burden was associated with reduced diet quality and sleep quality, as well as increased smoking. Diet quality and sleep quality were lowest among respondents who perceived high COVID-19 infection risk combined with high economic burden. Neither binge drinking nor exercise were associated with perceived COVID-19 infection risk, economic burden, or their interaction. Abstract: El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado., Understanding the determinants of COVID-19 vaccine uptake is important to inform policy decisions and plan vaccination campaigns. The aims of this research were to: (1) explore the individual- and country-level determinants of intentions to be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2, and (2) examine worldwide variation in vaccination intentions. This cross-sectional online survey was conducted during the first wave of the pandemic, involving 6697 respondents across 20 countries. Results showed that 72.9% of participants reported positive intentions to be vaccinated against COVID-19, whereas 16.8% were undecided, and 10.3% reported they would not be vaccinated. At the individual level, prosociality was a significant positive predictor of vaccination intentions, whereas generic beliefs in conspiracy theories and religiosity were negative predictors. Country-level determinants, including cultural dimensions of individualism/collectivism and power distance, were not significant predictors of vaccination intentions. Altogether, this study identifies individual-level predictors that are common across multiple countries, provides further evidence on the importance of combating conspiracy theories, involving religious institutions in vaccination campaigns, and stimulating prosocial motives to encourage vaccine uptake.

Abstract: Anxiety associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and home confinement has been associated with adverse health behaviors, such as unhealthy eating, smoking, and drinking. However, most studies have been limited by regional sampling, which precludes the examination of behavioral consequences associated with the pandemic at a global level. Further, few studies operationalized pandemic-related stressors to enable the investigation of the impact of different types of stressors on health outcomes. This study examined the association between perceived risk of COVID-19 infection and economic burden of COVID-19 with health-promoting and health-damaging behaviors using data from the PsyCorona Study: an international, longitudinal online study of psychological and behavioral correlates of COVID-19. Analyses utilized data from 7,402 participants from 86 countries across three waves of assessment between May 16 and June 13, 2020. Participants completed self-report measures of COVID-19 infection risk, COVID-19-related economic burden, physical exercise, diet quality, cigarette smoking,sleep quality, and binge drinking. Multilevel structural equation modeling analyses showed that across three time points, perceived economic burden was associated with reduced diet quality and sleep quality, as well as increased smoking. Diet quality and sleep quality were lowest among respondents who perceived high COVID-19 infection risk combined with high economic burden. Neither binge drinking nor exercise were associated with perceived COVID-19 infection risk, economic burden, or their interaction. Findings point to the value of developing interventions to address COVID-related stressors, which have an impact on health behaviors that, in turn, may influence vulnerability to COVID-19 and other health outcomes.

Abstract: During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. conservative politicians and the media downplayed the risk of both contracting COVID-19 and the effectiveness of recommended health behaviors. Health behavior theories suggest perceived vulnerability to a health threat and perceived effectiveness of recommended health-protective behaviors determine motivation to follow recommendations. Accordingly, we predicted that—as a result of politicization of the pandemic—politically conservative Americans would be less likely to enact recommended health-protective behaviors. In two longitudinal studies of U.S. residents, political conservatism was inversely associated with perceived health risk and adoption of health-protective behaviors over time. The effects of political orientation on health-protective behaviors were mediated by perceived risk of infection, perceived severity of infection, and perceived effectiveness of the health-protective behaviors. In a global cross-national analysis, effects were stronger in the U.S. (N = 10,923) than in an international sample (total N = 51,986), highlighting the increased and overt politicization of health behaviors in the U.S.

Abstract: On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine provoking the most serious military conflict in Central Europe since 1945. By mid-May 2022, thousands of Ukrainian civilians have been killed or injured and millions relocated in the country or dispersed to other, mostly European, countries. To our knowledge, this is the first study on the impact of the war on the mental and emotional well-being of Ukrainian civilians—university students and personnel. A snowball, non-probability sampling technique, was used for online survey data collection among students and personnel of 4 universities from May 5 to May 17, 2022. Four reliable instruments were used to collect information on the fear of war, resilience, burnout, and loneliness. Additional information was collected on substance use and eating behavior. Most respondents (97.8%) reported deterioration of their psycho-emotional status including depression (84.3%), exhaustion (86.7%), loneliness (51.8%), nervousness (84.4%), and anger (76.9%)—students more than personnel, females more than males. The use of substances (i.e., tobacco, alcohol, pain relievers, and sedatives) has increased as well as loneliness associated with fear, burnout and lower resilience. However, despite these conditions, 12.7% of the respondents have reported the war has not affected them. Study findings are preliminary and limited in terms of time and location of data collection. However, results confirm the negative effects of war associated with mental health, fear, substance use, stress, loneliness, burnout, and other related conditions.
