Method: We employed a prospective intervention study with a control group. The patients ranging in age from 60 to 74, were using one of the six selected community pharmacies in the Tokyo metropolitan area. They had been prescribed six or fewer kinds of medications, one of which was amlodipine. The medication dosages covered 1 month or longer. Patients who agreed to participate in the study were randomly assigned to the groups at each pharmacy. For the patients in the intervention group, the pharmacists provided telephone counseling between physician visits, in addition to the time they visited the pharmacies to collect their medications. For the patients in the control group, the pharmacists provided counseling only at their pharmacies. Results and discussion: The average days of medication administration were 49.2 days for the 58 patients in the intervention group, and 49.8 days for the 53 patients in the control group, with the average number of medications being 3.4 items per person for both groups. Through the telephone counseling, we were able to collect more information, eg, changes in physical condition and occurrences of side effects, from the intervention group than from the control group. The rate of incident detection in the information from the intervention group was five times that of the control group, making subsequent incident resolutions faster. Conclusion: This study suggested that phone counseling between physician visits could enable the identification of more issues regarding patients’ conditions. 4. Multi-Modal Analysis of Vibration and Meteorological Data for Structures on the World Heritage Site 'Battleship Island'

Abstract

This paper reports the results of vibration and meteorological observations of a buildng built on Hashima, Nagasaki, southern part of Japan, which was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2015 [1], and analyzes its dynamic characteristics. Hashima is called "Battleship Island" because its appearance resembles a battleship due to the many buildings standing upon it. The structure contributing most to the battleship appearance is No. 3 Building. An accelerometer and a weather sensor have been installed in No. 3 Building for long-term measurements. Multi-modal analysis of vibration and meteorological data was performed for 5 months, and the dynamic characteristics of No. 3 Building were examined.

Abstract

Patten, Mo, Kuehn and Lee's research (1998) on the design of a semiactive vibration absorber (SAVA) has shown that the semiactive control system could be used in structural control of large earthquakes. However, a few points related to the accuracy of the simulation analysis and the limitations of the reduced-order model need to be clarified. Additional clarifications on the use of the variable bulk modulus model and the absence of an accumulator in the SAVA would also be welcome.

Abstract

A 72-year-old female was admitted to our hospital for massive proteinuria. She had previously been diagnosed with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and macroglobulinemia. Renal histological examination demonstrated membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN), and type 2 cryoglobulinemia was positive in her serum. It is generally recognized that MPGN is the most common nephritis associated with HCV infection and cryoglobulinemia, but this is the first report of an HCV-infected patient with macroglobulinemia associated with MPGN. After treatment with prednisolone and melphalan, proteinuria disappeared, but macroglobulinemia and cryoglobulinemia were not improved.

Abstract

Gene expression biomarkers can enable rapid assessment of physiological conditions in situ, providing a valuable tool for reef managers interested in linking organism physiology with large-scale climatic conditions. Here, we assessed the ability of quantitative PCR (qPCR)-based gene expression biomarkers to evaluate (i) the immediate cellular stress response (CSR) of Porites astreoides to incremental thermal stress and (ii) the magnitude of CSR and cellular homeostasis response (CHR) during a natural bleaching event. Expression levels largely scaled with treatment temperature, with the strongest responses occurring in heat-shock proteins. This is the first demonstration of a ‘tiered’ CSR in a coral, where the magnitude of expression change is proportional to stress intensity. Analysis of a natural bleaching event revealed no signature of an acute CSR in normal or bleached corals, indicating that the bleaching stressor(s) had abated by the day of sampling. Another long-term stress CHR-based indicator assay was significantly elevated in bleached corals, although assay values overall were low, suggesting good prospects for recovery. This study represents the first step in linking variation in gene expression biomarkers to stress tolerance and bleaching thresholds in situ by quantifying the severity of ongoing thermal stress and its accumulated long-term impacts.
