The maritime industry lags behind other transportation sectors in the circular economy (CE) approaches and sustainability. Circularity is not well-established in the maritime, and there is a need to “close the loop” to minimise waste and increase the revenue stream. Although recycling contributes significantly to reducing the demand for raw materials, a significant number of parts and equipment from ships are currently underutilized. Therefore, this study aims to; i) identify the barriers to the successful implementation of CE principles in the maritime, ii) reveal the potential benefits of circular applications (6R), iii) briefly present remanufacturing environments in the aviation and automotive industries, and then iv) investigate the current situation and future potential in the maritime through industry investigation, stakeholder interviews and a structured questionnaire.

Human operators play a key role in the safe and successful conduct of maritime and aviation transport operations. Human error is often reported as a contributor to maritime and aviation accidents. Therefore, the implementation of human-informed design considerations is essential to improve safety and operational performance in both sectors, especially in the maritime sector, where there is a lack of an established framework to systematically consider human factors at the design stage. Therefore, the SAFEMODE project brings together key experts from both aviation and maritime sectors to address this important gap. The SAFEMODE project aims to deliver a framework that includes human factors considerations and enables designers to make risk-informed decisions. The methodological approach of SAFEMODE builds upon four areas: the collection and analysis of accident data; the development of a toolkit for human performance assurance, the development of Human Factors-based risk models and the creation of a framework to support risk-informed design. The type of safety events considered in SAFEMODE for both domains includes collision and grounding for the maritime sector, and runway collision, taxiway collision and wake vortex during en-route flight phase for the aviation sector. This paper will provide an insight into the efforts conducted as part of the SAFEMODE project to assess the human contribution to risk and the benefits of applying these models to support risk-informed decisions in design and operations.

Aiming to improve maritime safety, there is a need for a practical method that is capable of identifying the importance weightings for each contributing factor involved in accidents. Hence, Marine Accident Learning with Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (MALFCM) incorporated with Bayesian networks is suggested and applied in this study. MALFCM approach is based on the concept and principles of Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) to represent the interrelations amongst accident contributor factors. Hence, in this study, grounding/stranding accidents were investigated with the proposed MALFCM approach. As a result, inadequate leadership and supervision, lack of training and unprofessional behavior were identified as the most probable causes of grounding accident. In addition, in the accident scenario analysis, it was observed that the lack of safety culture contributed most to the system failure based on the posterior to prior failures ratio.

Our research aims to identify and quantify the potential health, safety and environmental impact of ship recycling, as well as assisting the achievement of safe, environmentally-sound management of end of life ships. We provided evidence and data on potential risks to air emission, water pollution and human health and safety. In the ship recycling sector, we have helped to achieve a reduction in accidents, increased numbers of regulation compliant ship recycling yards, increased numbers of workers trained for ship recycling, increased use of personal protective equipment, and reduced sea and soil pollution.

Bu çalışma, çarpışmadan kaçınma kapsamında havacılık vedenizcilik endüstrileri arasında bir karşılaştırma sunmaktadır. Böylece buçalışmada, hem uçaklarda hem de gemilerde çarpışmadan kaçınma içindüzenlemeler, operasyonel uygulamalar, teknikler ve prosedürleranlatılmaktadır. Havacılık endüstrisindekigüvenlik ve teknolojideki gelişmelerden faydalanılarak, gemilerde çarpışmadan kaçınmayıönlemek için daha iyi durumfarkındalığı oluşturulması ve daha gelişmişbir seyir takibi yapılabilmesi için havacılıktaki gelişmeler uygulanabilir. Genel olarak,sefer köprüsünde alınması gereken tüm kararlardan, GemidekiGörevli (Officer of the Watch,OOW) sorumludur. Sonuç olarak,bu durum muazzam miktarda veri analizi gerektirmektedir ve ayrıca; bu veriköprünün çeşitli lokasyonlarında bulunmaktadır. Yine de bu, OOW için, insanhatalarına ve durumsal farkındalıkeksikliğine yol açabilecek bir iş yüküne neden olabilmektedir. Bu çalışma,havacılık endüstrisinden esinlenilerek, denizde çarpışma riskini azaltmak içingüvenlikle ilgili en son geliştirmeleri veteknolojileri benimsememize yardımcı olarak, denizcilik sektöründeki eksiklikleri ortaya koymaktadır.

This study provides a comparison between aviation and maritime industries in the context of collision avoidance. Thus, it focuses on the regulations, operational practices, techniques and procedures in both aeroplanes and ships for collision avoidance. Due to safety and technology advancements in the aviation industry, advancements in aviation to prevent collision avoidance can be implemented in ships, developing a better situational awareness and improved navigational watch. Generally, the Officer of the Watch (OOW) on board ships is responsible for all the decisions that need to be taken on the navigational bridge. Consequently, this requires an immense amount of data analysis; moreover, this data is located in various locations on the bridge. Yet this can cause a work overload for the OOW, potentially leading to human errors and lack of situational awareness. This study reveals the shortages in maritime industry, helping us to adopt new safety-related enhancements and technologies to reduce the risk of collision at sea, which is inspired by the aviation industry.

Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago state with 17,508 islands, of which 6,000 are inhabited. This makes sea transportation a major part of people's everyday lives. Furthermore, fishing is extremely important for Indonesia with around 6.4 million people engaging in fishing activities. However, a significant amount of the current fishing fleet is outdated and could be improved to become more efficient and safer to operate. Currently, 28% of fishing boats in use are non-powered boats and 39% are propelled by an out-board engine. Through a detailed understanding of the unique needs of Indonesia and the requirement for the development of sustainable, safe and efficient designs, the capacity of sea trade can be increased, to enhance the current economy and living conditions. This paper outlines the framework and early results of a joint research project (SUVESIN) funded by the British Council’s Newton Fund scheme. The SUVESIN project brings together two reputable research institutions, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Surabaya to achieve the design of safer and more efficient vessels with renewable and locally available raw materials in Indonesia. Within the project, the gap analysis, identification of needs, requirements and opportunities on a renewable and sustainable raw material for Indonesia’s ship industry have been carried out. The background of the project and the early results, including gap analysis, a modern construction process for Indonesia’s ship industry and preliminary results of optimisation of the traditional Indonesian ship are presented in this paper.

The research paper in hand presents a thorough exploration of the fishing vessel accidents and near misses in the UK fishing industry as well as the underlying human element factors and sub-factors contributing to them. In this respect, the regulatory regime in the fishing industry both at national and international level is initially examined while also complemented by the investigation of past research efforts to address these issues. Furthermore, the analysis of the fishing vessels accidents and near misses as recorded in the UK MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch) database for a period of 19 years is performed in order to derive the causal factors leading to the fishing vessel accidents. It is initially shown that the fatalities and injuries taking place due to fishing vessels’ accidents have alarmingly remained unchanged over the last 15-20 years. Another key finding is that the number of accidents and near misses per day and night shifts is quite similar while most accidents take place in coastal waters. Furthermore, human factors are related to the vast majority of fishing vessels accidents with the principal ones referring to “non-compliance”, “equipment misuse or poorly designed”, “training” and “competence”. Finally, remedial measures are also suggested in order to address the main accident causes identified.
