Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and various tumor parameters assessed by pretreatment magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to evaluate their prognostic significance for cervical carcinoma treated with radiotherapy (RT). Methods. The study enrolled 78 patients with biopsy-proven squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of primary cervical cancer (clinically staged IB2 to IVA) who were treated in the Department of Clinical Oncology of the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital between August 2015 and May 2019. A retrospective analysis of patients with SCC was performed. Firstly, we investigated the correlations between NLR and MRI parameters. Then, univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Kaplan–Meier curves were constructed for OS and PFS. Results. Higher NLR showed significant association with larger tumor diameter and parametrial invasion assessed by pretreatment MRI. Univariate analysis indicated that uterine body invasion, parametrial invasion, and NLR were associated with prognosis of cervical cancer. Multivariable analyses demonstrated that parametrial invasion and NLR higher than the cutoff were independently associated with shorter OS and PFS, whereas uterine body invasion showed a significantly unfavorable influence on OS but showed no significant effect on PFS. Using the three risk factors of NLR above cutoff, parametrial invasion, and uterine body invasion, patients were divided into three subgroups. The three-year OS rates of patients with zero risk factors, one risk factor, and two or three of these factors were 96%, 91%, and 42%, respectively ( P < 0.001 ), showing a downward trend. Conclusions. Uterine body invasion, parametrial invasion, and NLR were significant prognostic factors for patients with cervical carcinoma treated with RT. These results may supplement FIGO staging to improve prognostic assessment of patients.

Urinary incontinence (UI) causes long-term physical and psychological suffering to patients. Risk factors for different UI subtypes and symptom severity are still unclear, as well as their associations. We aimed to examine the potential influencing factors of UI episodes, UI severity and UI subtypes, and the associations among them.A total of 611 women were recruited in Shantou, China. Clinical and demographic data were collected through electronic medical records, measurements and self-reports. UI diagnosis, subtypes and symptom severity were confirmed according to international uniform standards. The health burden of UI was evaluated by the Incontinence Impact Questionnaire. Multivariate logistic and linear regression models were carried out to examine the potential risk factors and associations among UI subtypes, symptom severity, and health burdens.Age, body mass index, comorbidity, lower urinary tract symptoms and constipation were associated with UI episodes and UI severity. Mixed UI patients had worse severity than urgency UI and stress UI, especially in leak times/week and daily life obstructing. Mixed UI patients also had higher health burdens, including mental health burdens, than urgency UI and stress UI patients. UI severity was positively associated with higher health burdens (β = 0.46, 95% CI 0.34-0.60), especially in physical activities, travel and social relationship burden (β = 0.61, 95% CI 0.40-0.85; β = 0.55, 95% CI 0.19-0.76; β = 0.65, 95% CI 0.38-0.91; respectively).Age, body mass index, comorbidity, somnipathy and constipation were associated with UI episodes and symptom severity. Mixed UI showed the highest symptoms severity and health burdens. Worse UI severity increased the patient's physical health burden, but was not obvious for mental health burden. Objective: Cigarette smoking is a carcinogenic factor for esophageal cancer and evidence also indicates its effects on tumor microenvironment in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Materials and Methods: In our study, we demonstrated nine immune infiltrating cells and markers in non-smokers and smokers of 189 non-drinking ESCC patients with multiplex fluorescent immunohistochemistry (mflHC) staining and multispectral imaging. The impacts of cigarette smoking on tumor microenvironment and patient prognosis were also analyzed. Results: Among 189 ESCC patients of non-drinker, 86 patients was current smokers, while 34 males and 59 females were non-smokers and 10 former-smokers. Among 34 male non-smokers and 83 smokers, distinct immune infiltrating cells, with increased DCs in stromal regions (P=0.033), elevated infiltration of Treg cells in intraepithelial regions (P=0.010) and reduced activate cytotoxic T lymphocytes (aCTLs) in both intraepithelial (P=0.021) and stromal regions (P=0.017), were observed in tumor specimens of smoking males, implying an immune suppressed response during cigarette smoke exposure. For smoking characters, the level of stromal tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) infiltration was correlated with smoking year after age adjusted (rs=0.352, P=0.002). Though cigarette smoking did not alter the expression of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) in epithelial cells or TAMs in tumor specimens, higher expression of PD-L1 predicted a worse survival in non-smokers but not smokers. Conclusions: Our findings indicated smoking may impair T cell-mediated immune response and supported the possible impacts of cigarette smoking in PD-L1 related research and therapy of ESCC.

Objective Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine which may be related to urolithiasis. Genetic polymorphisms of the interleukin-1β (IL-1β) have been proposed as markers for urolithiasis in some areas. Due to the high incidence of urolithiasis in Uighur children (Xinjiang, China) and existence of ethnic difference, our aim is to explore the potential of IL-1 gene polymorphisms and urolithiasis among these children. Methods Genomic DNA extracted from peripheral blood of 115 patients and 98 controls were used for genotype polymorphisms analyses. IL-1 receptor antagonist gene (IL-1RN) variable numbers of a tandem repeat (VNTR) gene polymorphisms were analyzed by PCR method. PCR-based restriction analysis was done for the IL-1β (−511) and IL-1β (+3954) gene polymorphisms by endonucleases Ava I and Taq I, respectively. The genotype distribution, allele frequencies, carriage rate and haplotype frequencies were statistically analyzed. Results No significant differences were observed in genotypic frequencies between pediatric urolithiasis patients and control group for IL-1RN gene (χ2 = 1.906, p = 0.605), IL-1β (−511) gene (χ2 = 0.105, p = 0.949), or IL-1β (+3954) gene (χ2 = 3.635, p = 0.169). There were yet no significant differences of the allele frequencies of IL-1RN VNTR gene (p = 0.779), IL-1β (-511) gene (p = 0.941), and IL-1β (+3954) gene (p = 0.418) in the case and control groups, as well as the carriage rate and haplotype of them (all p > 0.05). Conclusions The associations between IL-1RN VNTR, IL-1β (-511) and IL-1β (+3954) genes polymorphisms and urolithiasis were not significant in Uighur children. The results need to be confirmed in studies with larger population sample size, as well as in other ethnic groups.

Cervical cancer (CC) is reported as the second-most common female cancer worldwide, of which 99% is caused by persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. HPV vaccine protects against HPV infection and most cases of CC, which has only been introduced for a short time in mainland China. This study aimed to evaluate the attitude and practice related to HPV infection and vaccination among students at secondary occupational health school (SOHS) in China. We conducted a cross-sectional study in Southern China where data of 2248 participants were collected through questionnaires to estimate attitude and practice of students. Only 4.1% believed they were easily infected by HPV, 38.2% were willing to receive HPV vaccine and 30.8% intended to do regular screening of HPV infection in the future. Students in the second grade (OR = 1.51, 95%CI [1.25, 1.81]) and third grade (OR = 3.99, 95%CI [2.53, 6.27]) were more willing to take HPV vaccine compared to students in the first grade. Among the non-vaccinated participants, the most frequent reason for not receiving HPV vaccine was insufficient knowledge about HPV (91.1%). However, contradictory conclusions may be more challenging to explain due to biological specimen differences. To investigate the distribution of trace elements inside body, we collected serum, whole blood and tissues from 77 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), as well as serum and whole blood from 100 healthy individuals, and determined the concentrations of 13 elements (Al, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Sr, Cd, and Pb) with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Evidence indicates that individual or groups of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are associated with risk of breast cancer (BC). Epidemiological studies of PBDEs and BC progression are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between PBDE burdens in adipose tissues and prognostic biomarkers of BC as well as progression-free survival (PFS) of patients for the first time. The concentrations of 14 PBDE congeners in breast adipose tissues of 183 cases from the eastern area of southern China were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by logistic regression models for the associations between PBDE levels and prognostic biomarkers. Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses were conducted to identify the correlations between PBDEs and PFS. The results showed that BDE-99 and 190 levels were positively associated with clinical stage and N stage respectively (OR = 2.61 [1.26-5.40], OR = 2.78 [1.04-7.46]). Concentrations of BDE-28 and BDE-183 were negatively associated with the expression of estrogen receptor (ER) (OR = 0.30 [0.11-0.81]; 0.39 [0.15-0.99]) and progesterone receptor (PR) (OR = 0.36 [0.14-0.92]; 0.37 [0.15-0.91]), and increased BDE-47 was associated with lower human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression (OR = 0.44 [0.23-0.86]). Adipose levels of BDE-71, 99, 138, 153, 154 and total PBDEs were positively associated with p53 expression (all P 0.05). Finally, BDE-47, 99 and 183 were considered as independent prognostic factors for shorter PFS in the Cox models (adjusted hazard ratios = 3.14 [1.26-7.82]; 2.25 [1.03-4.94]; 2.60 [1.08-6.25], respectively). The recurrence risk and prognosis of BC may be closely bound to the body burdens of certain PBDE congeners. Further epidemiological and experimental studies are needed for confirmation.

Background & objectives This study was to survey the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene polymorphism distribution among Chinese Uyghur children and to explore the relationship between APOE gene polymorphism and the occurrence of urolithiasis. Methods A total of 144 Uyghur children with urolithiasis and 274 without the history of urolithiasis were enrolled in this study. Venous blood samples were collected from all participants, and APOE genotyping, derived from rs429358 and rs7412, was performed using Sanger sequencing. Results Among the 418 children, the most prevalent genotype was E3/3, accounting for 71.3 per cent in the urolithiasis group and 71.4 per cent in the control group, followed by E3/4 and E2/3. Higher frequencies of the ɛ2 and ɛ4 alleles and lower frequencies of the ɛ3 allele were observed in the test group, and the unusual allele ɛ1 was also found in them. However, there were no significant differences between cases and controls at both rs429358 and rs7412 genotype and allele frequencies [odds ratio (OR)=0.98, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.57-1.67; 0.98 (0.59-1.63); 1.43 (0.75-2.74) and 1.40 (0.74-2.62), respectively]. Likewise, none of significant differences was found between cases and controls at both APOE genotype and allele frequencies [OR=0.88, 95% CI: 0.51-1.53; 0.74 (0.33-1.64); 1.10 (0.73-1.66); 1.13 (0.76-1.67) and 1.14 (0.76-1.70), respectively]. Interpretation & conclusions The present study does not support any association between APOE genotyping and urolithiasis in Uyghur children.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder which is caused by the interplay of genetic and environmental risk factors such as second-hand smoke (SHS). The association between postnatal exposure to SHS and ADHD risk in children was still inconclusive. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the definite association. We searched for relevant studies from PubMed, Embase, Ovid, and Web of Science databases up to January 2020. We used random effect models to calculate pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Subgroup analyses and sensitive analyses were also performed to solve the heterogeneity. According to our inclusion criteria, 9 studies including 6 cross-sectional studies, 2 cohort studies, and 1 case-control study were included in the final analysis. Postnatal exposure to SHS increased the risk of ADHD in children (OR: 1.60; 95% CI: 1.37-1.87). Children who exposed to SHS were found a slight risk for conduct problems (OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.00-1.77). Among the studies which used cotinine as a biomarker for SHS exposure, a lower pooled OR (OR = 1.16, 95%CI = 1.01, 1.33) was observed between cotinine and ADHD in children. Our meta-analysis results suggested that SHS exposure may be a risk factor for ADHD. We also found that SHS exposure may be associated with some adverse behavioral outcomes. More prospective studies should be conducted to confirm the relationship between SHS exposure and ADHD in children.

Cigarette smoking is a factor capable of inducing esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, the biological pathways that are responsible for tumor development and are directly affected by cigarette smoking remain unknown. To explore the role of cigarette smoking in ESCC, we developed a long-term cigarette smoke extract (CSE) exposed cell model using the normal immortalized SHEE esophageal epithelial cell line, which would malignantly transform after long-term cultivation without carcinogens. CSE-exposed cells displayed higher malignancy and differently expressed several lncRNAs. Among them, H19, a lncRNA responsible for proliferation and invasion, was upregulated in CSE-exposed SHEE cells. In tumors from ESCC patients, H19 was significantly increased in smoking ESCC patients compared to non-smoking patients, and H19 was overexpressed and correlated with pathological tumor size in smokers. These results indicated that cigarette smoking lead to a different biological change from non-smoking induced ESCC and H19 related to cancer development during CSE-induced carcinogenesis.

The endocrine-disrupting effects of human exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been studied, but their associations with menstrual status were not clearly clarified. This study was to evaluate the associations between PBDE levels in adipose tissues and the menstrual cycle and menstrual bleeding duration alteration. A total of 298 female cases undergoing surgery were recruited from two hospitals in Shantou, China. Demographic, clinical, and pathological information were collected, and adipose tissues were obtained during mammary or abdominal surgery. Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry was used to analyze 14 PBDE congeners in the adipose samples. The associations between PBDE levels and menstrual cycle (MC) and menstrual duration (MD) were analyzed by logistic regression models, estimating odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). BDE-153 had the highest level in the adipose samples, followed by BDE-209, BDE-183 and BDE-47. Compared with referents, median levels of BDE-47, -71, -153, -183 were higher in women with MC 30 days (all P 0.05); BDE-47, -153, -183, -209 were also higher in women with MD 5.5 days (all P 0.05). After adjusted for age and parity, BDE-47, -71, -153, -183 were associated with prolonged MC (OR = 1.20, 1.15, 1.12, 1.11, respectively, all P 0.05) in the logistic regression models; and BDE-47, -153, -183, -209 were associated with the prolonged MD (OR = 1.13, 1.09, 1.10, 1.11, respectively, all P 0.05). Several individual PBDE congeners in female adipose were found associated with prolonged menstrual cycle and menstrual duration. PBDEs may influence reproductive health of women by altering menstrual status.

Guiyu accommodates millions of tons of e-waste from overseas and domestic sources each year and is notorious for its e-waste dismantling industry. As a consequence, Guiyu has been described as “the world’s most toxic place” and “junk town”. Informal e-waste recycling activities have caused severe pollution to the local environment and are associated with extensive health problems to the residents. This review provides updated insights on the body burden of heavy metals derived from e-waste and health outcomes resulted from lead (Pb) exposure. The review identified that Guiyu has been highly contaminated by heavy metals, especially Pb. Excessive exposure to Pb has been associated with multi-system and long-term effects in neonates and children, covering nervous, cardiovascular, adaptive immune, and hematologic systems as well as chromosome and DNA damage. Our review indicates strong associations that emphasize the need to develop strong regulations for prevention of exposure and health consequences in Guiyu and similar sites around the world.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) has been widely detected in environment and organisms. PFOS has been identified as the driving agent for the behavioral changes of zebrafish larvae, while the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. In this study, zebrafish embryos/larvae were exposed to 0, 0.04, 0.1, 0.4 and 1 μM PFOS for 166 h. The locomotor behaviors and the mRNA transcription of genes in neuromuscular system were detected. Exposure to PFOS did not affect the hatching/death rates and body length, but increased the heart beat rates and frequency of spontaneous tail coiling. Locomotor behavior in zebrafish larvae of 0.4 and 1 μM PFOS groups were increased in the light condition. Additionally, the levels of acetylcholine (Ach) in 0.4 μM PFOS group and dopamine (DA) in 0.1, 0.4 and 1 μM PFOS groups were found to be significantly increased. The expression of genes related to the synthesis and decomposition of ACh，the synthesis and receptor of DA, and fosab was increased in the different PFOS treatment groups, while the expression of all the other genes of the neuromuscular system were significantly reduced. The findings of this investigation demonstrated that PFOS exposure may alter the locomotor behavior of zebrafish through disrupting the expressions of genes in neuromuscular system. The disturbed process of neurotransmitter transmission and muscle contraction caused by PFOS may be the dominant mechanism of hyperactivity in zebrafish.

Animal studies have indicated that exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) during development can permanently affect blood/liver lipid balance. However, no epidemiological study has assessed the relationship between PBDEs in adipose tissues and blood lipid metabolism. In this study, we explored the associations between PBDEs levels in female adipose tissues and lipid profiles. We recruited 150 female patients undergoing plastic surgery from hospital in Shantou, China, collected their characteristics, clinical information, and adipose tissue samples. Fourteen PBDE congeners in adipose tissues were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Multiple linear and logistic regression models were used to explore the relationships between PBDEs and lipid profiles, while restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to evaluate the nonlinearity of mixtures. Median levels of ΣPBDEs and dominant congeners BDE-153, -209, and -183 in adipose tissues were 73.91, 26.12, 14.10 and 9.01 ng/g lipid, respectively. In the multiple linear model, BDE-153 and BDE-209 were negatively associated with triglycerides (TG), similarly for BDE-190 and total cholesterol (TC). While in the adjusted logistic models, BDE-138 was negatively associated with TC (OR = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.58, 0.99) and total lipids (TL) (OR = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.58, 0.99). Dyslexic children may be more likely to form a negative self-concept, especially with poor educational experiences and negative parenting. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the self-concept of Chinese dyslexic children in primary school, and explore the influence factors of self-concept as well as its relationship with parenting style. A total of 50 children with dyslexia and 50 non-dyslexics matched for age, grade and gender participated in the study. We used the Piers-Harris children’s self-concept scale (PHCSS) and the Chinese version of Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran for Children (EMBU-C) to evaluate the self-concept and parenting styles of the study population. Our results indicated that the academic competence, popularity and general self-concept in the dyslexic group were significantly lower than those in the control group (p &lt, 0.05). Based on the multivariate linear regression, we also found that residence (β = −0.32, p &lt, 0.05) and physical activity (β = 0.36, p &lt, 0.01) may influence factors self-concept in dyslexic children. In addition, a moderate and positive correlation was found between the self-concept of physical appearance and maternal emotional warmth (r = 0.36, p &lt, 0.05) by using the Spearman correlation analysis. Our outcomes suggested that children with dyslexia have a poorer self-concept than typical developing children. The self-concept of dyslexic children should be improved in order to achieve better physical and mental development.

Environmental heavy metal exposure has been considered to be the risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders in children. However, the available data on the associations between multiple metals exposure and the risk of dyslexia in China are limited. The purpose of our study was to examine the associations between urinary metal concentrations and Chinese dyslexia risk. A total of 56 Chinese dyslexics and 60 typically developing children were recruited. The urinary concentration of 13 metals were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Binary logistic regression and the Probit extension of Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR-P) were used to explore the associations between multiple metal exposure and the risk of Chinese dyslexia. Our results indicated that Co, Zn and Pb were significantly associated with Chinese dyslexia in the multiple-metal exposure model. After adjusting the covariates, a positive association was observed between Pb and the risk of Chinese dyslexia, with the odds ratio (OR) in the highest quartiles of 6.81 (95%CI: 1.07-43.19; p-trend = 0.024). Co and Zn were negatively associated with the risk of Chinese dyslexia. Compared to the lowest quartile, the ORs of Co and Zn in the highest quartile are 0.13 (95%CI: 0.02-0.72; p-trend = 0.026) and 0.18 (95%CI: 0.04-0.88; p-trend = 0.038), respectively. In addition, BKMR-P analysis indicated that with the cumulative level across Co, Zn and Pb increased, the risk of Chinese dyslexia gradually declined and then rebounded, albeit non-significantly, and Pb was the major contributor in this association. In general, the urinary concentrations of Co, Zn and Pb were significantly associated with Chinese dyslexia. More prospective studies are needed to confirm the health effects of multiple metals exposure in children with Chinese dyslexia.

Background Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) affects patients’ quality of life, yet there have been few reports of its morphology and epidemiological study in the southeast region of China. The aim of this study is to access the curve characteristics, prevalence, and factors associated with IS in Chaozhou city. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed in 2018, in which scoliosis screening was conducted among 5497 primary school students in Chaozhou city. Then, a case-control study based on the screening involving 2547 children was followed for the exploration of the associated factors. The questionnaires covering demographic characteristics, postural habits, cognition and self-sensation of scoliosis, and physical conditions were addressed for the investigation. ORs with 95%CIs were calculated based on logistic regression analysis to evaluate the factors associated with scoliosis. Results The prevalence of IS among primary school students was 6.15% in Chaozhou city, with 4.04% for males and 8.71% for females. The average Cobb angle was 15° (range 8 to 37°). Multiple logistic regression analysis suggested that female (OR=2.45), BMI (OR=0.67), having myopia (OR=1.49), self-sensation of scoliosis with symptoms (OR=5.52), insufficient sleep time (OR=2.65, 3.33), and less exercise time (OR=7.09, 7.29) were significantly associated with IS. Conclusions The prevalence of IS among primary school students in Chaozhou was at an average level, and it was significantly higher in females than in males. Lower body mass, having myopia, insufficient sleep time, and lower physical activity were associated with IS.

Cervical cancer (CC) is one of the most common causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. CC is mainly caused by human papilloma virus (HPV), which can be prevented by vaccination. We conducted a cross-sectional study in secondary occupational health school (SOHS) through a questionnaire aimed to assess the awareness and knowledge regarding HPV infection of students. A total of 2248 students participated in the survey, 45.3% of them had heard about CC, while only 21.9% of them had heard about HPV, and 74.2% had no idea of the causal link between HPV infection and CC. Most participants displayed poor awareness and knowledge about HPV infection. The results suggested that age, grade, major, academic performance, etc. were correlated with higher awareness of CC, HPV and HPV infection (p &lt, 0.05). In multivariable logistic analysis, third-grade students had the most increased awareness of CC (OR = 17.13, 95%CI: [8.11, 36.15]), HPV (OR = 6.59, 95%CI: [4.16, 10.43]) and HPV vaccine (OR = 2.78, 95%CI: [1.78, 4.32]) when compared to first-grade. Awareness and knowledge regarding HPV infection were insufficient among students in SOHS. As the future healthcare providers, these results highlight the need to supplement targeted education to improve their awareness and knowledge of HPV and vaccination.

BACKGROUND Alcohol consumption is increasing all over the world, but whether it is an independent factor affecting the occurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is inconsistent in many studies. We aimed to explore the association between alcohol consumption and NPC risk by integrating existing evidence in a meta-analysis. METHODS We searched for relevant articles published up to August 2018 in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge infrastructure (CNKI). The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Odds ratios (ORs) or relative risks were pooled to estimate the associations between alcohol consumption and NPC risk. RESULTS The meta-analysis of cohort studies showed no significant association between alcohol consumption and NPC, but pooled results from case-control studies indicated that ever drinking increased the probability of NPC versus nondrinking (OR = 1.10; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01, 1.19). The psychological resilience (PR) of postoperative patients is found relatively low in clinical work. We recruited 220 postoperative women with breast cancer to survey PR of them and the influencing factors. General demographic data and physical exercise status were collected by questionnaire, clinical characteristics data were obtained from medical records. Measures comprised the Chinese version of the Connor and Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), Family Hardiness Index (FHI) and Social Support Rate Scale (SSRS). The mean (±SD) PR score in women after breast cancer surgery was 65.18 ± 13.16. Clinical stage of breast cancer, courses of adjuvant therapy and physical exercise status affected PR level significantly. PR level was positively correlated with total GSES, FHI, and SSRS scores (r = 0.291, 0.378, 0.418, all P < 0.001); dimensions of FHI; and dimensions of SSRS. On multiple regression analysis, clinical stage of breast cancer and courses of adjuvant therapy negatively, but postoperative physical exercise status, commitment, control and social subjective support positively contributed to PR significantly. Psychological resilience of women after breast cancer surgery is relatively low. Moderate physical exercise, self-efficacy, family hardiness, and social support affect PR positively, promoting disease rehabilitation and improving the quality of life.

Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a widely used plasticizer, also known as a developmental toxicant, but its neurobehavioral toxicity remains elusive. This study evaluated the neurobehavioral toxicity and its possible mechanism in larval zebrafish. Embryos at gastrula period (~6 h post fertilization, hpf) were exposure to DEHP (0, 1, 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/L) for 7 days. Spontaneous tail movement in embryos and swimming activity in larvae were monitored. Alterations in the mRNA expression of genes involved in dopamine signaling and apoptosis pathway were assessed. In situ apoptotic cells were assessed by Acridine orange staining, and oxidative damage were measured using enzymatic assay. The behavior results showed that DEHP inhibited spontaneous tail movement and decreased locomotor activities in the light/dark behavioral test. Meanwhile, behavioral changes were accompanied by increased apoptosis and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and dopamine (DA) content, and perturbed the expression of genes associated with the synthesis (th), reuptake (dat) and metabolism (mao) of DA, with dopamine receptors (DRs), and with the apoptosis pathway (p53, bax, bcl2, caspase-3, caspase-8, caspase-9). The findings will help to illuminate the possible neurobehavioral toxicity mechanisms of organism exposure to DEHP.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are suspected to be associated with breast cancer risk because of their estrogenic potencies. Epidemiological studies of PBDEs and breast cancer are scarce. Our study aimed to estimate the association between adipose-tissue PBDE concentrations and breast cancer risk. A total of 209 breast cancer cases and 165 controls were recruited from hospitals between January 2014 and May 2016 in Shantou, Chaoshan area, China. Concentrations of 14 PBDE congeners were measured in adipose tissues obtained from the breast for cases and the abdomen/breast for controls during surgery. Demographic and clinicopathologic characteristics were obtained from medical records. Breast cancer risk as well as clinicopathologic characteristics were evaluated by adipose-tissue PBDE level. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for breast cancer risk associated with levels of PBDE congeners were estimated from logistic regression models for all cases and stratified by estrogen receptor (ER) status. Level of total PBDEs (∑PBDE) and most individual PBDE congeners were higher in breast cancer cases than controls (median ∑PBDE, 94.99 vs 73.72 ng/g lipid). In the adjusted univariate model for all cases, breast cancer risk was increased with both 2nd and 3rd tertiles versus the 1st tertile of BDE-47 level (OR 2.05 [95% CI 1.08-3.92]; 5.47 [2.96-10.11]) and BDE-209 level (2.48 [1.30-4.73]; 4.72 [2.52-8.83]) with trend (both P 0.001) and with the 3rd tertile of BDE-28 level (2.83 [1.63-4.92]), BDE-99 (3.22 [1.85-5.60]), BDE-100 (5.45 [2.90-10.23]), BDE-138 (2.40 [1.37-4.20]), BDE-153 (1.74 [1.02-2.97]), BDE-154 (1.84 [1.05-3.22]), and ∑PBDE levels (1.83 [1.07-3.14]) but decreased with the 3rd tertile of BDE-71 level (0.38 [0.22-0.65]) with trend (all P 0.01). After stratifying by ER-positive or -negative status, the adjusted results were similar for ER-positive patients except for BDE-153 and BDE-154, with no statistical significance. In the multivariate model for all cases, age, menarche age, BDE-47, 71, 99, 100, 183 and 209 were independent factors associated with breast-cancer risk. ∑PBDE and most individual PBDE congeners investigated were positively associated with breast cancer risk in women from the Chaoshan area, China. PBDE may play a role in the occurrence and development of breast cancer.

Ketamine is a non-competitive antagonist of NMDA glutamate receptor. It is used as an anesthetic, analgesic, sedative, and anti-depressive agent in clinical practice and also an illegal recreational drug. The increasing use has contributed to the measurable levels of ketamine in both wastewaters and hospital effluents, thereby classified as an emergent contaminant. Lately, the potential toxicity of ketamine has raised serious concerns about its iatrogenic or illicit use during pregnancy, neonatal and childhood stages. However, to assess its long-term toxicity potentially by the use of early life stages in human and rodents is limited. In this regard, the zebrafish has been considered as excellent model organism for biosafety assessments of ketamine due to it boasts an in vivo model with the advantages of an in vitro assay. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the reported toxicity studies with ketamine in early life stage of zebrafish. The adverse effects of ketamine are known to cause overall developmental and multi-organ toxicity, including cardio-, neuro-, and skeletal toxicity. Furthermore, multiple mechanisms are found to be responsible for perpetrating toxicity of ketamine. The current findings confluence to emphasize the zebrafish embryo as an appealing model system for developmental toxicity testing in higher vertebrates.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of widely used flame retardants, and their residue in the environment may threaten the ecosystem and human health. The neurodevelopmental toxic effects of PBDEs have been verified in previous studies, but the mechanisms are still unclear. Behavioral analysis and transcriptomics were performed in this study to assess the neurodevelopmental toxic effects of PBDEs on zebrafish embryos and larvae, and the potential mechanisms. The embryos were collected after fertilization and exposed to control (0.05% DMSO), 10, 50, 100 (ug/L) 2, 2′, 4, 4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) for 7 days. The locomotion parameters of larvae were recorded and analyzed by a behavioral analysis system (EthoVision XT, Noldus). Enrichment of functions and signaling pathways of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were analyzed by GO and DAVID database. The comparison with the control group showed adverse developments such as low hatching rate, high mortality rate, alterative heart rate, and abnormal spontaneous tail coiling frequency of embryos (24hpf). For the zebrafish larvae, behavioral analyses results suggested decreased activities and movements of the treatment in the light-dark period at 120, 144 and 168hpf, especially the 50 and 100μg/L groups. The affected functions included steroid hormone regulation, neuro regulation, circadian regulation, cardioblast differentiation, immune-related regulation. The enrichment of KEGG pathways were Hedgehog signaling (Shh), Toll-like receptor signaling, FoxO signaling, and Steroid biosynthesis pathway. Hedgehog signaling pathway was further verified via RT-qPCR for its major role in the development of neurogenesis. The mRNA levels of Shh pathway indicated the inhibition of Shh signal in our study since shha, patched1, gli1 and gli2 genes were significantly down-regulated. In summary, PBDEs might influence the neurodevelopment of zebrafish in the early life stage by multiple toxic signaling pathways alteration.
