Abstract

An analog of the optical polarizer/analyzer for electrons, a spin filter based on freestanding ferromagnetic (FM) nanomembrane covering the entrance of the microchannel plate (MCP) was applied for efficient spin filtering and electron amplification in the 2D field of view. To study the spin dependent transmission, we constructed a spin-triode device (spintron), which consists of a compact proximity focused vacuum tube with the Na2KSb spin-polarized electron source, the FM-MCP and phosphor screen placed to run parallel to each other. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of FM nanomembranes consisting of a Co/Pt superlattice deposited on a freestanding 3 nm SiO2 layer with a total thickness of 10 nm. The FM-MCP has 10e6 channels with a single-channel Sherman function S=0.6 and a transmission of 1.5x10e-3 in the low electron energy range. The FM-MCP-based device provides a compact optical method for measuring the spin polarization of free electron beams in the imaging mode and is well suited for photoemission spectroscopy and microscopy methods., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

New spin-dependent photoemission properties of alkali antimonide semiconductor cathodes are predicted based on the detected optical spin orientation effect and DFT band structure calculations. Using these results, the Na$_2$KSb/Cs$_3$Sb heterostructure is designed as a spin-polarized electron source in combination with the Al$_{0.11}$Ga$_{0.89}$As target as a spin-detector with spatial resolution. In the Na$_2$KSb/Cs$_3$Sb photocathode, spin-dependent photoemission properties were established through detection of high degree of photoluminescence polarization and high polarization of the photoemitted electrons. It was found that the multi-alkali photocathode can provide electron beams with emittance very close to the limits imposed by the electron thermal energy. The vacuum tablet-type sources of spin-polarized electrons have been proposed for accelerators, that can exclude the construction of the photocathode growth chambers for photoinjectors., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We describe a new time-of-flight Fourier spectrometer for investigation of UCN diffraction by a moving grating. The device operates in the regime of a discrete set of modulation frequencies. The results of the first experiments show that the spectrometer may be used for obtaining UCN energy spectra in the energy range of 60$\div$200 neV with a resolution of about 5 neV. Abstract

A new approach to the free fall experiment with UCN is proposed. The idea is that the experiment is performed with neutrons from different equidistant lines of a discrete energy spectrum with a precisely known distance between the lines. Such a spectrum may be formed by neutron diffraction from a moving phase grating. Time-of-flight values of neutrons from different lines of the spectrum must be measured. Abstract

We describe an experimental installation for a new test of the weak equivalence principle for neutron. The device is a sensitive gravitational spectrometer for ultra-cold neutrons allowing to precisely compare the gain in kinetic energy of free falling neutrons to quanta of energy ${\hbar}{\Omega}$ transferred to the neutron via a non stationary device, i.e. a quantum modulator. The results of first test experiments indicate a collection rate allowing measurements of the factor of equivalence $ { \gamma}$ with a statistical uncertainty in the order of $5{\times}10^{-3}$ per day. A number of systematic effects were found, which partially can be easily corrected. For the elimination of others more detailed investigations and analysis are needed. Experimental device for simulation of quenching and tempering of drill pipe welded zone by means of induction heating and water-polymer quenching liquid has been constructed. The regime of local heat treatment allowing obtaining improved mechanical properties corresponding ANSI/API Specification 5DP, PSL-3 has been developed. Создана экспериментальная установка для моделирования процессов закалки и отпуска зоны сварного соединения бурильных труб с применением индукционного нагрева и водополимерной закалочной среды. Разработан режим локальной термической обработки, позволяющий получить повышенный уровень свойств по требованиям стандарта ANSI/API Specification 5DP, PSL-3.

Abstract

A precision measurement of the double-differential production cross-section, d2σπ+/d p dΩ, for pions of positive charge, performed in the HARP experiment is presented. The incident particles are protons of 12.9 GeV/c momentum impinging on an aluminium target of 5% nuclear interaction length. The measurement of this cross-section has a direct application to the calculation of the neutrino flux of the K2K experiment. After cuts, 210 000 secondary tracks reconstructed in the forward spectrometer were used in this analysis. The results are given for secondaries within a momentum range from 0.75 to 6.5 GeV/c, and within an angular range from 30 mrad to 210 mrad. The absolute normalization was performed using prescaled beam triggers counting protons on target. The overall scale of the cross-section is known to better than 6%, while the average point-to-point error is 8.2%. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The incident particles are protons of 12.9 GeV/c momentum impinging on an aluminium target of 5% nuclear interaction length. The measurement of this cross-section has a direct application to the calculation of the neutrino flux of the K2K experiment. After cuts, 210000 secondary tracks reconstructed in the forward spectrometer were used in this analysis. The results are given for secondaries within a momentum range from 0.75 GeV/c to 6.5 GeV/c, and within an angular range from 30 mrad to 210 mrad. The absolute normalization was performed using prescaled beam triggers counting protons on target. Abstract

A precision measurement of the double-differential production cross-section, d2σπ+/d p dΩ, for pions of positive charge, performed in the HARP experiment is presented. The incident particles are protons of 12.9 GeV/c momentum impinging on an aluminium target of 5% nuclear interaction length. The measurement of this cross-section has a direct application to the calculation of the neutrino flux of the K2K experiment. After cuts, 210 000 secondary tracks reconstructed in the forward spectrometer were used in this analysis. The results are given for secondaries within a momentum range from 0.75 to 6.5 GeV/c, and within an angular range from 30 mrad to 210 mrad. The absolute normalization was performed using prescaled beam triggers counting protons on target. The overall scale of the cross-section is known to better than 6%, while the average point-to-point error is 8.2%. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

We present the results of a search for nu(mu) --> nu(e) oscillations in the NOMAD experiment at CERN. The experiment looked for the appearance of nu(e) in a predominantly nu(mu) wide-band neutrino beam at the CERN SPS. No evidence for oscillations was found. The 90% confidence limits obtained are Deltam(2) < 0.4 eV(2) for maximal mixing and sin(2) (20) < 1.4 x 10(-3) for large Deltam(2). This result excludes the LSND allowed region of oscillation parameters with Deltam(2) greater than or similar to 10 eV(2). (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

A study of strange particle production in nu(mu) charged cur-rent interactions has been performed using the data from the NOMAD experiment. Yields of neutral strange particles (K-S(0), Lambda, (&ULambda;) over bar) have been measured. Mean multiplicities are reported as a function of the event kinematic variables E-nu W-2 and Q(2) as well as of the variables describing particle behaviour within a hadronic jet: x(F), z and p(T)(2). Decays of resonances and heavy hyperons with identified K, and A in the final state have been analyzed. Clear signals corresponding to K*+/-, Sigma(*+/-), Xi(-) and Sigma(0) have been observed. Abstract

A search was made among numu charged current events collected in the NOMAD experiment for the reaction: nu(mu) + N --> mu(-) + D*+ + hadrons hooked right arrowD(0) + pi(+) hooked right arrowK(-) + pi(+) A high purity D*+ sample composed of 35 events was extracted. The D*+ yield in nu(mu) charged current interactions was measured to be T = (0.79 +/- 0.17(stat.) +/- 0.10(syst.))%. The mean fraction of the hadronic jet energy taken by the D*+ is 0.67 +/- 0.02(stat.) +/- 0.02(syst.). The distributions of the fragmentation variables z, P-T(2) and x(F) for D*+ are also presented. Abstract

Results from the v, appearance search in a neutrino beam using the full NOMAD data sample are reported. A new analysis unifies all the hadronic tau decays, significantly improving the overall sensitivity of the experiment to oscillations. The "blind analysis" of all topologies yields no evidence for an oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90% CL allowed region in the sin(2)2 theta (mu tau)-Deltam(2) plane which includes sin(2)2 theta (mu tau) < 3.3 x 10(-4) at large Deltam(2) and Deltam(2) < 0.7 eV(2)/c(4) at sin(2) 2 theta (mu tau) = 1. The corresponding contour in the nu (e) --> nu (tau) oscillation hypothesis results in sin(2) 2 theta (l tau) < 1.5 x 10(-2) at large Deltam(2) and Deltam(2) < 5.9 eV(2)/c(4) at sin(2) 2 theta (l tau) = 1. Abstract

We present a measurement of the polarization of )over bar> hyperons produced in nu (mu) charged current interactions. The full data sample from the NOMAD experiment has been analyzed using the same V-0 identification procedure and analysis method reported in a previous paper [NOMAD Collaboration. Nucl. Phys. B 588 (2000) 3] for the case of Lambda hyperons. The )over bar> polarization has been measured for the first time in a neutrino experiment. Abstract

Backward proton and pi (-) production has been studied in nu (mu) CC interactions with carbon nuclei. Detailed analyses of the momentum distributions, of the production rates, and of the general features of events with a backward going particle, have been carried out in order to understand the mechanism producing these particles. Abstract

The Lambda polarization in upsilon (mu) charged current interactions has been measured in the NOMAD experiment. The event sample (8087 reconstructed Lambda 's) is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of previous bubble chamber experiments, while the quality of event reconstruction is comparable. We observe negative polarization along the W-boson direction which is enhanced in the target fragmentation region: P-x(x(F) < 0) = -0.21 +/- 0.04(stat) +/- 0.02(sys). In the current fragmentation region we find P-x(x(F) > 0) = -0.09 +/- 0.06(stat) +/- 0.03(sys). These results provide a test of different models describing the nucleon spin composition and the spin transfer mechanisms. A significant transverse polarization tin the direction orthogonal to the Lambda production plane! has been observed for the first time in a neutrino experiment: P-y = -0.22 +/- 0.03(stat) +/- 0.01(sys). The dependence of the absolute value of P-y on the Lambda transverse momentum with respect to the hadronic jet direction is in qualitative agreement with the resuits from unpolarized hadron-hadron experiments. We present the results of a search for nu_mu → nu_e oscillations in the NOMAD experiment at Cern. The experiment looked for the appearance of nu_e in a predominantly nu_mu wide-band neutrino beam at the CERN SPS. No evidence for oscillations was found. Abstract

The method developed for the calculation of the flux and composition of the West Area Neutrino Beam used by NOMAD in its search for neutrino oscillations is described. The calculation is based on particle production rates computed using a recent version of FLUKA and modified to take into account the cross-sections measured by the SPY and NA20 experiments. These particles are propagated through the beam line taking into account the material and magnetic fields they traverse. The neutrinos produced through their decays are tracked to the NOMAD detector. The fluxes of the four neutrino flavours at NOMAD are predicted with an uncertainty of about 8% for nu_mu and nu_e, 10% for nu_mu, and 12% for nu_e. The energy-dependent uncertainty achieved on the nu_e/nu_mu prediction needed for a nu_e-->nu_mu oscillation search ranges from 4% to 7%, whereas the overall normalization uncertainty on this ratio is 4.2%.
