Polycrystalline lead-free Ba$_{0.85}$Ca$_{0.15}$Zr$_{0.10}$Ti$_{0.90}$O$_3$ (BCZT), BaTi$_{0.89}$Sn$_{0.11}$O$_3$ (BTSn) and 0.4Ba$_{0.85}$Ca$_{0.15}$Zr$_{0.10}$Ti$_{0.90}$O$_3$-0.6BaTi$_{0.89}$Sn$_{0.11}$O$_3$ (0.4BCZT-0.6BTSn) ferroelectric ceramics were prepared via sol gel process and their structural, dielectric and energy storage properties were studied. Pure perovskite structure was confirmed by X ray diffraction analysis. The evolution of energy storage performances with temperature was studied. A Significant recoverable energy storage density of 137.86 mJ/cm$^3$ and high energy-storage efficiency of 86.19% under a moderate electric field of 30 kV/cm were achieved in the composite 0.4BCZT 0.6BTSn ceramic at 353 $^\circ$K. Moreover, excellent temperature stability (70-130 $^\circ$C) of the energy storage efficiency (less than 3%) was achieved.

The Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (BCZT) ceramics were successfully prepared by sol-gel process, and sintered at 1420 degree. The effect of sintering times (2, 4 and 6 h) on structural, microstructural, electric properties, energy storage, and electrocaloric effect was systematically examined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that all the samples crystallize in the pure perovskite structure. The morphotropic phase transition from the tetragonal to the orthorhombic phase (T-O) was identified and confirmed by Rietveld refinement. The BCZT ceramic sintered at 1420 degree for 4h possesses a good relative density of 98%, and exhibits optimal properties with a high dielectric permittivity ~16310, a large electrocaloric effect coefficient ~ 0.244Kmm/kV and an energy density storage of ~ 10.61 mJ/cm3.

Over the past decades, there has been significant interest in new cooling technology based on the electrocaloric effect. The large electrocaloric effect observed in polymeric and inorganic ferroelectric materials made possible development of dielectric cooling devices of a new generation. We report a significant impact of annealing on the electrocaloric effect observed in 12/65/35 PLZT bulk ceramics. The electrocaloric data were obtained by direct measurements. Materials exhibiting a large caloric effect could lead to the development of new generation of heat-management technologies that will have better energy efficiency and be potentially more environmentally friendly. The focus of caloric materials investigations has shifted recently from solid-state materials toward soft materials, such as liquid crystals and liquid crystalline elastomers. It has been shown recently that a large electrocaloric effect exceeding 7 K can be observed in smectic liquid crystals. Here, we report on a significant elastocaloric response observed by direct elastocaloric measurements in main-chain liquid crystal elastomers. It is demonstrated that the character of the nematic to paranematic/isotropic transition can be tuned from the supercritical regime towards the first-order regime, by decreasing the density of crosslinkers. In the latter case, the latent heat additionally enhances the elastocaloric response. Our results indicate that a significant elastocaloric response is present in main-chain liquid crystalline elastomers, driven by stress fields much smaller than in solid elastocaloric materials. Therefore, elastocaloric soft materials can potentially play a significant role as active cooling/heating elements in the development of new heat-management devices.

The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Fe7S8 material have been studied within the framework of the ab-initio calculations, the mean field approximation (MFA) and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Our study shows that two forms of the iron atoms, Fe2+ with spin S=2, and Fe3+ with spin {\sigma}=5/2 are the most probable configurations. A mixed Ising model with ferromagnetic spin coupling between Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions and between Fe3+ and Fe3+ ions, and with antiferromagnetic spin coupling between Fe2+ ions of adjacent layers has been used to study the magnetic properties of this compound. We demonstrated that the magnetic phase transition can be either of the first or of the second order, depending on the value of the exchange interaction and crystal field. The presence of vacancies in every second iron layer leads to incomplete cancellation of magnetic moments, hence to the emergence of the ferrimagnetism. Multiferroic composites with the composition (1-x) BaTi0.8Sn0.2O3 - (x) La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (x =0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1) were prepared by sol-gel techniques. Rietveld refinements of the composites with 0-3 and 3-0 type connectivities exhibit the formation of pure phases and confirm the fraction of the composite samples. It was found that the composites grain size decreases slightly with increasing the La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 content. Magnetic measurements of the composite ceramics exhibit a gradual increase in saturation and remanent magnetization with increasing La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 content. Dielectric data demonstrate that the composite materials show high values of the dielectric constant in comparison with the parent compound BaTi0.8Sn0.2O3 (BTSO). In addition, an attempt is made to measure the magnetoelectric coupling coefficient and to explain the negative permittivity and losses occurring in these materials at a certain frequency and temperature conditions.

A series of Pb-free ferroelectric materials Ba0.9Sr0.1Ti1-xSnxO3 (BSTS-x) with 0 < x < 0.15 was successfully prepared via solid-state reaction method. The effect of Sn substitution on the crystal structure, microstructure, dielectric behavior, ferroelectric and tunable features of BSTS-x ceramics were systematically investigated. Room temperature (RT) x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis using the Rietveld refinement method reveals that all the synthesized BSTS-x ceramics were well crystallized into single perovskite structure. The results show a tetragonal phase for 0.00 < x < 0.02, which evolves to orthorhombic and tetragonal coexisting phases for 0.05 < x < 0.07. The composition x = 0.10 showed a mixture of tetragonal, orthorhombic and rhombohedral phases at RT, while a single cubic phase is observed for x = 0.15. The crystal phases determined by XRD were confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Enhanced dielectric permittivity with a maximum value of {\epsilon}'~ 35000 is observed for x = 0.10 at RT. The ferroelectric behavior of BSTS-x ceramics was investigated through polarization hysteresis loops and tunability measurements. High tunability of 63% at RT and under the low DC-applied electric field of 1.40 kV/cm is achieved for x = 0.10.

Recent findings of a large electrocaloric (EC) effect in polymeric and inorganic ferroelectric materials open a potential possibility of development of solid-state cooling or heating devices of new generation with better energy efficiency that may be less harmful for the environment. We investigate by using direct measurements, the temperature and electric field dependence of the electrocaloric response in Pb1-xLax(ZryTi1-y)1-x/4O3 bulk ceramics (PLZT) with x=0.06 and 0.12. Here, the properties of the EC response were probed in a part of the PLZT composition phase diagram with low y=0.40 composition, in which the EC effect was not previously studied. Measurement results show the existence of the sizeable EC response in 12/40/60 PLZT sample with the EC temperature change ({\Delta}TEC) of 2.92 K at 430 K and 80 kV/cm. This value exceeds previously obtained {\Delta}TEC values in relaxor ferroelectric x/65/35 PLZT compositions and rivaling the best EC response in lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate ceramics. The electrocaloric responsivity ({\Delta}T/{\Delta}E) value of 0.41x10-6 Km/V determined at a lower electric field of 20 kV/cm and 410 K is comparable to those observed in other perovskite ferroelectrics.

We report on strong pretransitional effects across the isotropic liquid-plastic crystal melting temperature in linear and nonlinear dielectric response. Studies were carried out for cyclooctanol (C8H16O) in the unprecedented range of temperatures 120 K < T < 345 K. Such pretransitional effects have not yet been reported in any plastic crystals. Results include the discovery of the experimental manifestation of the Mossotti Catastrophe behavior, so far considered only as a hypothetical paradox. The model interpretations of experimental findings are proposed. We parallel the observed pretransitional behavior with the one observed in octyloxycyanobiphenyl (8OCB), typical liquid crystal (LC), displaying a reversed sequence of phase transitions in orientational and translational degrees of order on varying temperature. Furthermore, in its nematic phase, we demonstrate first-ever observed temperature-driven crossover between regions dominated by isotropic liquid and smectic A pretransitional fluctuations. We propose a pioneering minimal model describing plastic crystal phase behavior where we mimic derivation of classical Landau-de Gennes-Ginzburg modelling of Isotropic - Nematic - Smectic A LC phase behavior.

Perovskite manganite La0.5Ca0.5-x xMnO3 (LCMO) nanomaterials were elaborated using the sucrose modified auto combustion method. Rietveld refinements of the X-ray diffraction patterns of the crystalline structure confirm a single-phase orthorhombic state with Pbnm space group (No. 62). The Ca-vacancies were voluntarily created in the LCMO structure in order to study their influence on the magnetic behaviour in the system. The magnetic susceptibility was found to be highly enhanced in the sample with Ca-vacancies. Paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition was evidenced in both samples around 254 K. This transition is, characterized by a drastic jump of the susceptibility in the sample with Ca-vacancies. The maximum of entropy change, observed for both compounds at magnetic field of 6T was 2.30 J kg-1K-1 and 2.70 J kg-1K-1 for the parent compound and the lacunar one respectively. The magnetocaloric adiabatic temperature change value calculated by indirect method was 5.6 K and 5.2 K for the non-lacunar and Ca-vacancy compound, respectively. The Ca-lacunar La0.5Ca0.5-x xMnO3 (x=0.05) reported in this work demonstrated overall enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect over the LCMO. The technique used to elaborate LCMO materials was beneficial to enhance the magnetocaloric effect and magnetic behaviour. High performance lead-free multiferroic composites are desired to replace the lead-based ceramics in multifunctional devices applications. Laminated compounds were prepared from ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials. In this work, we present laminated ceramics compound by considering the ferromagnetic La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (LCMO) and the ferroelectric BaTi0.8Sn0.2O3 (BTSO) in two different proportions. Compounds (1-x) LCMO-(x) BTSO with x=1 and 0 (pure materials) were synthesized by the sol gel method and x=0.7 and 0.5 (laminated) compounds were elaborated by welding appropriate mass ratios of each pure material by using the silver paste technique. Structural, dielectric, ferroelectric, microstructure and magnetic characterization were conducted on these samples. X-ray scattering results showed pure perovskite phases confirming the successful formation of both LCMO and BTSO. SEM images evidenced the laminated structure and good quality of the interfaces. The laminated composite materials have demonstrated a multiferroic behavior characterized by the ferroelectric and the ferromagnetic hysteresis loops. Furthermore, the enhancement of the dielectric constant in the laminated composite samples is mainly attributed to the Maxwell-Wagner polarization.

The present letter explores the electrocaloric effect (ECE) in the lead free oxide Ba0.8Ca0.2Ti0.95Ge0.05O3 ceramics (BCTG). The electrocaloric responsivity (dT/dE) was determined by two different methods using the Maxwell relationship (dT/dE)~(dP/dT)_E. In a first well-known indirect method, P-E hysteresis loops were measured in a wide temperature range from which the pyroelectric coefficient p_E=(dP/dT)_E and thus (dT/dE) were determined by derivation of P(T,E) data. In the second novel method the pyroelectric coefficient p_E and consequently the electrocaloric responsivity was determined by direct measurements of the pyroelectric currents under different applied electric fields. Within the experimental error good agreement was obtained between two methods with an electrocaloric responsivity equal to 0.18 +/- 0.05 10-6 K.m.V-1 was obtained at about 410 K, Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The layered FeTe2O5Cl compound was studied by specific-heat, muon spin relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance, dielectric, as well as neutron and synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements, and the results were compared to isostructural FeTe2O5Br. We find that the low-temperature ordered state, similarly as in FeTe2O5Br, is multiferroic - the elliptical amplitude-modulated magnetic cycloid and the electric polarization simultaneously develop below 11 K. However, compared to FeTe2O5Br, the magnetic elliptical envelop rotates by 75(4) deg and the orientation of the electric polarization is much more sensitive to the applied electric field. We propose that the observed differences between the two isostructural compounds arise from geometric frustration, which enhances the effects of otherwise subtle Fe3+ (S = 5/2) magnetic anisotropies. Finally, x-ray diffraction results imply that, on the microscopic scale, the magnetoelectric coupling is driven by shifts of the O1 atoms, as a response to the polarization of the Te4+ lone-pair electrons involved in the Fe-O-Te-O-Fe exchange bridges., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. The interactions between the dielectric polarization and the fluctuations of the strain (stress) tensor in relaxor ferroelectrics are shown to give rise to the anisotropy of the anharmonic P4-term in the Landau-type free energy, however, the harmonic P2-term is still properly described by the rigid spherical random bond--random field model. These are the essential features of the compressible spherical dipolar glass model, which is used to calculate the singularities of the specific heat near field-induced critical points. The electrocaloric effect (ECE) in normal and relaxor ferroelectrics is investigated in the framework of a thermodynamic approach based on the Maxwell relation and a Landau-type free energy model. The static dielectric response of relaxors is described by the spherical random bond--random field model, yielding the first Landau coefficient a=a(T), which differs from the usual expression for ferroelectrics. The fourth-order coefficient b is treated as a phenomenological parameter, which is either positive or negative due to the anisotropy of the stress-mediated coupling between the polar nanoregions. When b<0, the maximum ECE in a relaxor is predicted near the critical point in the temperature-field phase diagram, whereas in a ferroelectric it occurs at the first order phase transition. The theoretical upper bound on the ECE temperature change is estimated from the values of saturated polarization, effective Curie constant, and specific heat of the material., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

The low-temperature magnetic phase diagram of the multiferroic system FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br down to 300 mK and up to 9 T is presented. Short-range magnetic correlations within the crystal layers start to develop already at $\sim$50 K, i.e., far above $T_{N1} \sim$ 11.0 K, where the system undergoes a magnetic phase transition into the high-temperature incommensurate (HT-ICM) phase. Only 0.5 K lower, at $T_{N2}$, the system undergoes a second phase transition into the low-temperature incommensurate amplitude-modulated (LT-ICM) phase accompanied by a spontaneous electric polarization. When the magnetic field is applied, the transition temperatures shift depending on the field orientation. In the case of $B||b$ and $B >$ 4.5 T, the HT-ICM phase disappears along with the electric polarization in the LT-ICM phase. The field dependence of the magnetic transition temperatures is explained in the context of the magnetic susceptibility behavior. Similarities and differences between the novel amplitude-modulated and well-established helicoidal magnetoelectrics are discussed.

Magnetic and ferroelectric properties of layered geometrically frustrated cluster compound FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br were investigated with single-crystal neutron diffraction and dielectric measurements. Incommensurate amplitude modulated magnetic order with the wave vector $\bf{q}$=($\half$, 0.463, 0) develops below $T_N=10.6(2) {\rm K}$. Simultaneously, a ferroelectric order with the spontaneous polarization perpendicular to ${\bf q}$ and to Fe$^{3+}$ magnetic moments emerges. The observed ferroelectricity and extraordinary linear scaling of the ferroelectric and magnetic order parameter are provoked by the striction of the intercluster Fe-O-Te-O-Fe bridges leading to the shift of Te$^{4+}$ ions and polarization of their lone-pair electrons.
