Abstract

A total of 40 million new jobs were created in the U.S. between 1959 and 1984. Forty percent of those new jobs were in four industries: retail trade, restaurants, business services, and medical services. Reasons for the growth have to do with unique aspects of the labor-market adjustment process. Another significant factor is the large service export figures. In spite of the continued growth in the number of jobs, unemployment persists and many labor-market problems have yet to be solved.
