8. Inflation in simple one-loop effective potentials of perturbative quantum gravity

Abstract

We study inflation in scalar-tensor perturbative quantum gravity driven by a one-loop effective potential. We consider effective potentials generated by three models. The first model describes a single scalar field with a non-vanishing mass. The second model describes a massless scalar field with non-minimal coupling to the Einstein tensor. The third model generalises the Coleman-Weinberg model for the gravitational case. The first model can be consistent with the observational data for $N\sim 70$ e-foldings. The second model can be consistent with the observational data for $N \sim 40$ e-foldings. We did not find parameters that make the generalised Coleman-Weinberg model consistent with the observational data. We discuss the implications of these results and ways to improve them with other terms of effective action., Comment: 19 pages, 30 figures. International Journal of Modern Physics, 2024

Pirogoff Russian State Medical University, Moscow, RussiaAbstract: The protective properties of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) are conferred by the intricate architecture of its endothelium coupled with multiple specific transport systems expressed on the surface of endothelial cells (ECs) in the brain's vasculature. When the stringent control of the BBB is disrupted, such as following EC damage, substances that are safe for peripheral tissues but toxic to neurons have easier access to the central nervous system (CNS). As a consequence, CNS disorders, including degenerative diseases, can occur independently of an individual's age. Although the BBB is crucial in regulating the biochemical environment that is essential for maintaining neuronal integrity, it limits drug delivery to the CNS. This makes it difficult to deliver beneficial drugs across the BBB while preventing the passage of potential neurotoxins. Available options include transport of drugs across the ECs through traversing occludins and claudins in the tight junctions or by attaching drugs to one of the existing transport systems. Either way, access must specifically allow only the passage of a particular drug. In general, the BBB allows small molecules to enter the CNS; however, most drugs with the potential to treat neurological disorders other than infections have large structures. Several mechanisms, such as modifications of the built-in pumping-out system of drugs and utilization of nanocarriers and liposomes, are among the drug-delivery systems that have been tested; however, each has its limitations and constraints. This review comprehensively discusses the functional morphology of the BBB and the challenges that must be overcome by drug-delivery systems and elaborates on the potential targets, mechanisms, and formulations to improve drug delivery to the CNS.Keywords: apoE, blood–brain barrier, CNS, drug targeting, liposomes, nanoparticles

Abstract

In this paper, we present the results of the first beam tests of the detection system at the focal plane of the Dubna Gas-Filled Recoil Separator-2 (DGFRS-2), which receives beams from the DC-280 FLNR cyclotron. The high beam intensity of $^{48}$Ca$^{+10}$ heavy ions from the cyclotron enables us to obtain a number of superheavy recoils sufficient to compare both the measured and calculated spectra of superheavy recoils implanted into a silicon detector. A real-time algorithm to search for an Evaporation Residue (ER) -- $\alpha$ correlated sequences is described in brief. It should be noted that the DGFRS-2 spectrometer operates in conjunction with the 48x128 strip DSSD (Double-sided Silicon Strip Detector; 48x226 mm2) detector and a low-pressure pentane-filled gaseous detector (1.2 Torr; 80x230 mm$^2$). A block-diagram of the spectrometer and the event format are also presented. Special attention is paid to the response of a low-pressure pentane-filled DeltaE multiwire proportional chamber for recoils of Fl, synthesized in the $^{242}$Pu+$^{48}$Ca $\to$ $^{287}$Fl +3n complete fusion nuclear reaction. Some actual parameters of the detection system have also been extracted from $^{\rm nat}$Yb + $^{48}$Ca, $^{232}$Th + $^{48}$Ca, $^{243}$Am + $^{48}$Ca, $^{238}$U + $^{48}$Ca reactions. Abstract

The paper is devoted to the description of the iDREAM detector and its systems. iDREAM is a prototype detector designed to demonstrate the feasibility of antineutrino detectors for remote reactor monitoring and safeguard purposes. Antineutrinos are detected with a 1 ton liquid scintillator via inverse beta decay on protons. In order to suppress cosmic muons, gamma and neutron background, the detector is housed in a dedicated shielding. The detector is installed at the Kalinin nuclear power plant (Russia), 20 m from the 3 GW$_{th}$ reactor core., Comment: Accepted for publication in JINST

Abstract

We demonstrate an ionically gated planar PS-PV solar cell with ultra-thick fullerene ETL with a porous CNT electron collector on top of it. Perovskite photovoltaic devices usually have undoped electron transport layers, usually thin like C60 due to its high resistance. Metallic low work function cathodes are extremely unstable in PS-PV due to reaction with halogens I-/Br-, and it would be desirable to have stable carbon cathodes on top of thick low resistance ETL for enhancing the stability of PS-PVs. We show that gating such top CNT cathode in ionic liquid, as part of a supercapacitor charged by Vg tunes the Fermi level of CNT by EDL charging, and causes lowering of a barrier at of C60/C70 ETL. Moreover, at higher gating voltage ions further propagates into fullerene by electrochemical n-doping, which increases dramatically PV performance by raising mostly two parameters: Isc and FF, resulting in PCE efficiency raised from 3 % to 11 %. N-doping of ETL strongly enhances charge collection by ETL and CNT raising Isc and lowering series resistance and thus increasing strongly PCE. Surprisingly Voc is not sensitive in PS-PV to external Vg gating, on the contrary, to strongly enhanced Voc in ionically gated organic PV, where it is the main gating effect. This insensitivity of Voc to lowering of the work function of Vg gated CNT electrode is a clear indication that Voc in PS-PV is determined by inner p-i-n junction formation in PS itself, via accumulation of its intrinsic mobile ionic species halogens and cations and their vacancies., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures
