Metazoan parasite communities of Lepomis gibbosus (Centrarchidae), one of the most successfully introduced fish species in Europe, were studied at two isolated ponds (Knielingen, Tropfen) along the Upper Rhine in Germany. Nine parasite taxa were observed, including North American species co-introduced to Europe (ancyrocephalid monogeneans, diplostomid trematodes), circumpolar species infecting L. gibbosus in both their native and non-native ranges (bothriocephalid cestodes) and locally acquired parasitic nematodes. Both parasite communities consisted predominantly of North American species. Acquisition of local parasites was not observed at Tropfen, where the fish community comprised just two species, with L. gibbosus dominant. Low prevalence and abundance of acquired parasites was found at Knielingen, which supported a diverse fish community. At Tropfen, a high abundance of the North American parasite Posthodiplostomum centrarchi probably contributed to the lower condition index, hepatomegaly and splenomegaly observed. Timoniella spp. are cryptogonimid flukes (Digenea: Cryptogonimidae) that parasitize the guts of fish in brackish waters. Timoniella imbutiforme , a species from the Mediterranean Sea, is recorded in the Black Sea, while T. balthica has been described from the Baltic Sea. In this paper, we clarify the taxonomic status of Timoniella populations in the Baltic and Black seas. Adults and metacercariae of Timoniella spp. were sampled from localities in the Mediterranean Sea (France), Black Sea (Ukraine) and Baltic Sea (Germany) and subjected to molecular and morphological analysis, including Bayesian phylogenetic reconstruction based on concatenated sequences of ITS1–ITS2–28S. This allowed us to construct a new key to species of the genus Timoniella. Our results suggest that T. balthica forms part of the Boreal–Atlantic relict fauna of the Black Sea and should now be considered a junior synonym of T. imbutiforme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Chinese sleeper (Perccottus glenii), an invasive Asian fish, was first registered in Germany in 2009 (westernmost extent of its invasive range). We sampled Chinese sleepers from two localities on the Bücherlgraben creek (a tributary of the River Naab) in south-eastern Germany in November 2015 and examined them for parasite infection. Twelve taxa were registered, including ciliates (unidentified Trichodina), a monogenean, three cestode species, two digenean taxa, two acanthocephalan species, two nematode species and one mollusc glochidia. Infracommunities consisted of 1–5 species, with 10% of fish uninfected. Three parasite species (Acanthocephalus anguillae, Gyrodactylus luciopercae and Pseudocapillaria tomentosa) were recorded on Chinese sleepers for the first time. The results highlight the important role of the Chinese sleeper as a second intermediate host in the life cycle of heron and grebe parasites. The Chinese sleeper parasite community displayed low homogeneity at both localities sampled, with allogenic parasites (metacercariae and mesocercoids) mostly shared. Differences between localities were mainly caused by autogenic parasites. No invasive parasites associated with the Chinese sleeper were observed in the study area, all parasites being representatives of European fauna. The article discusses the invasive round goby Apollonia melanostoma Trematodes. Four species comprise this genus in North American waters. N. umbellus is the sole species that has been described to parasitize fishes in Lake Erie of the Great Lakes. The metacercariae of N. umbellus are located in the muscles of relatively small-sized fishes. Species introductions often coincide with loss of genetic diversity and natural enemies. Anthropogenic translocation of the North-American pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus (L., 1758) (Centrarchidae) and its further spread have resulted in recent species establishment in most European countries. This study determines genetic differentiation of non-native European pumpkinseed populations and identifies how their genetic structure relates to the distribution and abundance of parasite species. Microsatellite analysis indicated presence of three genetic lineages, which were well supported by discriminant analysis based on parasite abundance data. The first lineage clustered pumpkinseed populations from northern and southern France and showed high allelic richness, heterozygosity and parasite richness. The second included populations along the "Southern invasion corridor" connecting the rivers Rhine, Main and Danube. The fish exhibited low to high genetic and parasite diversity and generally high parasite abundance. The third lineage clustered populations with low genetic and parasite diversity, located in Portuguese reservoirs and water bodies along the upper Elbe. Parasite species richness was significantly associated with host microsatellite heterozygosity and allelic richness, a trend partially affected by richness of North-American parasites. Furthermore, our results indicate that parasite community composition may serve as a useful biological tool to discriminate non-native fish populations and their inter-relationships. Helminth infracommunities were studied at 174 sites of Latvia in seven hosts from six amphibian taxa of different taxonomical, ontogenic and ecological groups. They were described using a standard set of parasitological parameters, compared by ecological indices and linear discriminant analysis. Their species associations were identified by Kendall's rank correlation, but relationships with host size and waterbody area were analysed by zero-inflated Poisson and zero-inflated negative binomial regressions. The richest communities (25 species) were found in post-metamorphic semi-aquatic Pelophylax spp. frogs, which were dominated by trematode species of both adult and larval stages. Both larval and terrestrial hosts yielded depauperate trematode communities with accession of aquatic and soil-transmitted nematode species, respectively. Nematode loads peaked in terrestrial Bufo bufo. Helminth infracommunities suggested some differences in host microhabitat or food object selection not detected by their ecology studies. Associations were present in 96% of helminth species (on average, 7.3 associations per species) and dominated positive ones. Species richness and abundances, in most cases, were positively correlated with host size, which could be explained by increasing parasite intake rates over host ontogeny (trematode adult stages) or parasite accumulation (larval Alaria alata). Two larval diplostomid species (Strigea strigis, Tylodelphys excavata) had a negative relationship with host size, which could be caused by parasite-induced host mortality. The adult trematode abundances were higher in larger waterbodies, most likely due to their ecosystem richness, while higher larval abundances in smaller waterbodies could be caused by elevated infection rates under high host densities.
