The common data model (CDM) has found widespread application in healthcare studies, but its utilization in cancer research has been limited. This article describes the development and implementation strategy for Cancer Clinical Library Databases (CCLDs), which are standardized cancer-specific databases established under the Korea-Clinical Data Utilization Network for Research Excellence (K-CURE) project by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare. Fifteen leading hospitals and fourteen academic associations in Korea are engaged in constructing CCLDs for 10 primary cancer types. For each cancer type-specific CCLD, cancer data experts determine key clinical data items essential for cancer research, standardize these items across cancer types, and create a standardized schema. Comprehensive clinical records covering diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes, with annual updates, are collected for each cancer patient in the target population, and quality control is based on six-sigma standards. To protect patient privacy, CCLDs follow stringent data security guidelines by pseudonymizing personal identification information and operating within a closed analysis environment. Researchers can apply for access to CCLD data through the K-CURE portal, which is subject to Institutional Review Board and Data Review Board approval. The CCLD is considered a pioneering standardized cancer-specific database, significantly representing Korea's cancer data. It is expected to overcome limitations of previous CDMs and provide a valuable resource for multicenter cancer research in Korea.

Background and Purpose: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are frequently observed in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. The concept of "body-first" and "brain-first" subtypes in PD has been proposed, but the correlation of PD subtype with LUTS remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the disparities in urological dysfunctions between body-first and brain-first subtypes of PD using urodynamic studies (UDS)., Methods: We reviewed patients with PD (disease duration <3 years) who had undergone UDS and completed urological questionnaires (Overactive Bladder Symptom Score [OABSS] and International Prostate Symptom Score [IPSS]) and a voiding diary. Patients were categorized as having body-first or brain-first PD based on cardiac sympathetic denervation (CSD) using cardiac meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) uptake and the presence of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD), assessed using a questionnaire (PD with CSD and RBD indicating the body-first subtype)., Results: A total of 55 patients with PD were categorized into body-first PD (n = 37) and brain-first PD (n = 18) groups. The body-first PD group exhibited smaller voiding volume and first desire volume (FDV) than the brain-first PD group (p < 0.05 in both). Also, the body-first PD group had higher OABSS and IPSS scores, and higher prevalence of overactive bladder diagnosed by OABSS, compared to the brain-first PD group. In multiple linear regression, cardiac MIBG uptake was positively correlated with FDV and voiding volume and negatively correlated with OABSS and IPSS (p < 0.05 in all)., Conclusions: Patients with the body-first PD subtype exhibited more pronounced overactive bladder symptoms and impaired storage function in the early stage of disease. Background: In Parkinson's disease (PD) and Parkinson plus syndrome (PPS), inflammation is recognized as a relevant or contributing factor in the advancement of the diseases. For this reason, numerous biomarkers signaling immune alteration in both the central and peripheral nervous systems have been evaluated in PD and PPS. Nonetheless, the comprehensive inflammatory indices derived from readily available standard blood tests in PD, PPS, and healthy controls (HC) were rarely evaluated especially in the early stage of the diseases., Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the serum level of peripheral inflammatory markers among the patients and investigate whether these markers contribute to symptoms., Method: Clinical data and blood test results from drug naïve, early-stage 139 PD and 87 PPS patients, along with 139 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) to PD were enrolled, with exclusion criteria applied to conditions potentially affecting inflammation. The study examined the disparities in peripheral inflammation among the groups, using total and subpopulation of white blood cells (WBCs), platelet count, red cell distribution width (RDW), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and other composite values reflecting inflammation including RDW to platelet ratio (RPR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil to HDL-C ratio (NHR), monocyte to HDL-C ratio (MHR), lymphocyte to HDL-C ratio (LHR), platelet to HDL-C ratio (PHR), systemic inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), and aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI)., Result: The MHR values were significantly higher in both PD and PPS groups compared to HC (p < 0.001), and NHR was significantly higher in the PPS group only compared to the HC group (p < 0.001). However, no significant differences in all the inflammatory markers were observed between PPS and PD (p > 0.05). Subgroup analysis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) patients revealed significantly higher NHR and MHR levels compared to the HC group (p = 0.025, p = 0.050, respectively), with no significant difference among PSP, MSA, and PD groups. After adjustment for age, sex, and disease duration, MHR was positively associated with H&Y in the total population (β = 0.288, p < 0.001), negatively associated with MMSE in the PD group (β = -0.245, p = 0.017), and positively associated with both H&Y (β = 0.432, p < 0.001) and UPDRS part II (β = 0.295, p = 0.018) in PPS group., Conclusion: NHR and MHR values are not effective as reliable diagnostic markers due to overlap among groups and their limited discriminative capacity in ROC analyses. The synthesis, enhancement, and maintenance of magnetite-based catalyst nanoparticles (NPs) are important for photocatalytic activity and recovery rates. We used a sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) calcination method to modify MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles to optimize their performance in the photocatalytic oxidation of 2,5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The results indicated a 94% increase in photocatalytic efficiency, while magnetic assessments performed using a vibrating sample magnetometer showed an 8.9% improvement in magnetic properties without degradation. These findings show the dual benefits of increased photocatalytic performance with strong magnetic properties, which are important for the application and reusability of photocatalysts. The recycling of these photocatalysts reduces secondary pollution and increases the process cost-effectiveness. These results contribute to the solution of problems with the use of photocatalytic materials.

It is challenging to control the electronic structure of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) for extended applications in renewable energy devices. Here, ReSe 2 -VSe 2 (Re 1- x V x Se 2 ) alloy nanosheets over the whole composition range via a colloidal reaction is synthesized. Increasing x makes the nanosheets more metallic and induces a 1T″-to-1T phase transition at x = 0.5-0.6. Compared to the MoSe 2 -VSe 2 and WSe 2 -VSe 2 alloy nanosheets, ReSe 2 and VSe 2 are mixed more homogeneously at the atomic scale. The alloy nanosheets at x = 0.1-0.7 exhibit an enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward acidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In situ X-ray absorption fine structure measurements reveal that alloying caused the Re and V atoms to be synergically more active in the HER. Gibbs free energy (ΔG H* ) and density of state calculations confirm that alloying and Se vacancies effectively activate the metal sites toward HER. The composition dependence of HER performance is explained by homogenous atomic mixing with the increased Se vacancies. The accumulation of alpha-synuclein (αSyn) is widely recognized as the main pathological process in Parkinson's disease (PD). Additionally, neuroinflammation is considered to be one of the contributing mechanisms in the development of PD. In light of this, it is hypothesized that the reactive microglia exacerbate the propagation of αSyn and neurodegeneration, while the inhibition of microglial activity may mitigate these effects. To test this hypothesis, αSyn preformed fibrils (PFF)-injected PD mouse model was employed. Co-injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and PFF was performed to investigate if microglial reactivity intensified αSyn propagation and neurodegeneration. Additionally, oral administration of PLX5622, a microglial inhibitor that targets the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor, was given for two weeks before and after PFF injection each to explore if microglial inhibition could prevent or reduce αSyn pathology. Intrastriatal co-injection of LPS and PFF resulted in increased microglial reactivity, αSyn accumulation, and neurodegeneration compared to PFF injection alone. However, treatment with PLX5622 significantly suppressed microglial reactivity, reduced αSyn pathology, and alleviated dopaminergic neuron degeneration in the PD mouse model injected with PFF. Based on these findings, it is evident that microglial reactivity plays a crucial role in the progression of αSyn pathology and neurodegeneration in PD. The phase control of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is an intriguing approach for tuning the electronic structure toward extensive applications. In this study, WSe 2 nanosheets synthesized via a colloidal reaction exhibit a phase conversion from semiconducting 2H to metallic 2M under Se-rich growth conditions (i.e., increasing the concentration of Se precursor or lowering the growth temperature). High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy images are used to identify the stacking sequence of the 2M phase, which is distinctive from that of the 1T' phase. First-principles calculations employing various Se-rich models (intercalation and substitution) indicated that Se enrichment induces conversion to the 2M phase. The 2M phase WSe 2 nanosheets with the Se excess exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In situ X-ray absorption fine structure studies suggested that the excess Se atoms in the 2M phase WSe 2 enhanced the HER catalytic activity, which is supported by the Gibbs free energy (ΔG H* ) of H adsorption and the Fermi abundance function. Objective: Drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) is a frequently encountered diagnostic possibility when considering Parkinson's disease (PD). While olfactory dysfunction is a common clinical feature in PD, the comparison of olfactory function between the two conditions remains insufficient. This study aimed to compare olfactory function, including threshold, discrimination, and identification (TDI) profiles, between PD and DIP., Methods: Consecutive patients with drug-naïve PD (n = 78) or DIP (n = 31) confirmed through dopamine transporter imaging were enrolled in this study. The YSK olfactory function (YOF) test, composed of TDI domains culturally familiar odorants to Koreans, was administered to all patients., Results: In the study population, patients with DIP were significantly older than patients with PD. Over 70% of patients in each group had hyposmia or anosmia, and there was no significant difference in the occurrence of olfactory dysfunction between the two groups. In addition, there were no differences in the total YOF score and threshold score between the two groups. Meanwhile, the PD group had a significantly lower discrimination and identification score than the DIP group after adjusting for age, sex, the existence of diabetes, disease duration, and cognitive function., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that detailed olfactory profiles are different in PD and DIP, even though olfactory dysfunction can be observed in both conditions.

Background: Immunoproteasome, a part of ubiquitin-proteasome system, is involved in immune response as well as protein degradation. However, the relationship between immunoproteasome and Parkinson's disease (PD) was not evaluated clearly. We hypothesized that the shift of immunoproteasome attributes to PD pathogenesis due to its role in inflammation and protein homeostasis., Objective: To determine whether immunoproteasome in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and brain is expressed differently between patients with PD and healthy controls (HC)., Methods: Blood samples were collected from 19 HC to 40 patients with PD of comparable ages. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated and followed by RT-qPCR to measure the mRNA levels of three catalytic subunits of immunoproteasome, namely, PSMB8, PSMB9, and PSMB10. Then, the protein levels of each subunit were measured by western blot. Finally, we confirmed the altered immunoproteasome subunit in the post-mortem human brain of PD., Results: In PBMCs, PSMB8 mRNA expression of PD group significantly increased compared to HC (p = 0.004), whereas PSMB9 and PSMB10 mRNA were not different between the PD and HC. The ratio of PSMB10 and PSMB8 mRNA (PSMB10/8 ratio) also reflected the significant difference between the PD and HC (p = 0.002). The PSMB10/8 ratio was well correlated with the UPDRS total and Part III score in the early stage of PD (Hoehn and Yahr ≤2.5) or drug-naïve PD subgroups. In terms of the protein level of immunoproteasome subunits in PBMCs, the increase of PSMB8 protein was observed in PD compared to HC (p = 0.0009), while PSMB9 and PSMB10 were not different between groups. Ternary alloying of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has the potential for altering the electronic structure of materials to suit electrochemical applications. Herein, we synthesized (MoWV)Se 2 nanosheets at various compositions via a colloidal reaction. The mole fraction of V atoms ( x V ) was successfully increased up to 0.8, producing a metallic phase that is highly durable against hydration. Furthermore, we synthesized (MoW)Se 2 nanosheets over the entire composition range. The atomic mixing of the ternary alloys is more random than that of the constitutional binary alloys, as supported by first-principles calculations. Compared to binary alloying, ternary alloying more effectively enhanced the electrocatalytic activity for acidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The HER performance increased upon increasing x V to 0.44, and thereafter, it declined at higher x V primarily owing to surface oxidation. The analysis of Gibbs free energy for H adsorption revealed that ternary alloying strongly activates the basal plane for the HER. VSe 2 contains numerous sites favorable for H adsorption, facilitating the composition-dependent HER. These results provide a pioneering strategy for designing multicomponent TMD catalysts that maximize the advantages of each component.

Background and Purpose: REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with characteristic clinical subtypes and prognosis. In addition, nigrostriatal pathway, the most vulnerable anatomical area in PD, formed neuronal network interplaying with cortical and subcortical structures, and which may cause PD clinical phenotype. We evaluated the regional selectivity of presynaptic striatal dopaminergic denervation associated with RBD in PD., Methods: We compared two groups (n = 16) of PD patients with and without RBD in terms of specific binding ratios (SBR) in subregions of the striatum, which were measured using positron emission tomography with 18F-FP-CIT. SBRs of the anterior and posterior caudate, ventral striatum, and posterior and ventral putamen regions were measured in more or less affected side, and right or left side, or bilateral sum of the striatum., Results: Age, disease duration, and severity of parkinsonism were not significantly different between groups. Although group differences in all areas were not significant with multiple comparison corrections, SBR of the ventral striatum and anterior caudate in sum of both sides was significantly less in the RBD than in the non-RBD group without correction ( p < 0.05). In the right anterior caudate and left ventral striatum, SBR was also lower in the RBD than in the non-RBD group without correction ( p < 0.05). Attention function was impaired in the RBD group compared with the non-RBD group ( p < 0.05). However, these statistical significances were not definite after correction of multiple comparisons ( p > 0.05)., Conclusions: There is a possibility that RBD in early PD may be associated with presynaptic dopaminergic denervation in the ventral striatum and anterior caudate, which may explain decreased attention in our RBD group. RBD in PD may imply a distinct pathological progression. This study aimed to establish the effect of severe varus deformity on soft tissue balance in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), which is not yet well established. We retrospectively enrolled 205 patients (270 knees) who underwent primary TKA using the measured resection technique. Four intraoperatively measured TKA gaps and gap differences were compared between the severe varus deformity group (Hip-knee-ankle [HKA] varus angle ≥ 10°) and the mild varus deformity group (HKA varus angle < 10°). Pearson’s correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to investigate the factors affecting flexion and extension gap differences (FGD and EGD). A receiver operating characteristic curve was applied to assess the cut-off value of the HKA varus angle to discriminate the rectangular gap. The FGD (1.42 ± 1.35 mm vs. 1.05 ± 1.16 mm, p = 0.019) and the EGD (1.45 ± 1.32 mm vs. 0.97 ± 1.53 mm, p = 0.006) were significantly larger in severe varus deformity group than in mild varus deformity group. The HKA varus angle was positively correlated with both FGD (r = 0.264, p < 0.001) and EGD (r = 0.319, p < 0.001) and was an influencing factor for FGD (β = 0.232, p = 0.040) and EGD (β = 0.229, p = 0.037). A preoperative HKA angle of 12.4° was selected as the cutoff value to discriminate between rectangular and trapezoidal gaps. Thus, the severity of varus deformity (HKA varus angle) was found to be a significant factor affecting the mediolateral gap difference in TKA. When performing TKA in a knee with an HKA varus angle ≥ 12.4°, a trapezoidal gap is more likely to be expected. Level of evidence III, case−control study.

Alloying of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is a pioneering method for engineering electronic structures with expanded applications. In this study, MoSe 2 -VSe 2 -NbSe 2 ternary alloy nanosheets are synthesized via a colloidal reaction. The composition is successfully tuned over a wide range to adjust the 2H-1T phase transition. The alloy nanosheets consist of miscible atomic structures at all compositions, which is distinct from immiscible binary alloys. Compared to each binary alloy, the ternary alloys display higher electrocatalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an acidic electrolyte. The HER performance exhibits a volcano-type composition dependence, which is correlated with the experimental d-band center (ε d ). Spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations consistently predict the homogenous atomic distributions. Composition modulation of transition metal dichalcogenides is an effective way to engineer their crystal/electronic structures for expanded applications. Here, fully composition-tuned W 1- x Nb x Se 2 alloy nanosheets were produced via colloidal synthesis. These nanosheets ultimately exhibited a notable transition between WSe 2 and NbSe 2 hexagonal phases at x = 0.6. As x approaches 0.6, point doping is converted into cluster doping and eventually separated domains of WSe 2 and NbSe 2 . Extensive density functional theory calculations predicted the composition-dependent crystal structures and phase transitions, consistently with the experiments. The electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic electrolyte was significantly enhanced at x = 0.2, which was linked with the d - band center. The Gibbs free energy for the H adsorption at various basal and edge sites supported the enhanced HER performance of the metallic alloy nanosheets. We suggested that the dispersed doping structures of Nb atoms resulted in the best HER performance. Our findings highlight the significance of composition tuning in enhancing the catalytic activity of alloys.

Tuning the electronic structures of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) is essential for their implementation in next-generation energy technologies. In this study, we synthesized composition-tuned WSe 2 -VSe 2 (W 1- x V x Se 2 , x = 0-1) alloyed nanosheets using a colloidal reaction. Alloying the semiconducting WSe 2 with VSe 2 converts the material into a metallic one, followed by a 2H-to-1T phase transition at x = 0.7. Over a wide composition range, WSe 2 and VSe 2 are atomically immiscible and form separate ordered domains. The miscible alloy at x = 0.1 displayed enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an acidic electrolyte. This trend was correlated with the d -band center via a volcano-type relationship. Spin-polarized density functional theory calculations consistently predicted the atomic immiscibility, which became more significant at the 2H-1T phase transition composition. The Gibbs free energy of H adsorption on the basal planes (Se or hole sites) and the activation barriers along the Volmer-Heyrovsky reaction pathway supported the enhanced HER performance of the alloy phase, suggesting that the dispersed V-doped structures were responsible for the best HER catalytic activity. Our study demonstrates how the atomic structure of TMD alloy nanosheets plays a crucial role in enhancing catalytic activity.

The polymorphism of nanostructures is of paramount importance for many promising applications in high-performance nanodevices. We report the chemical vapor deposition synthesis of Ga 2 S 3 nanowires (NWs) that show the consecutive phase transitions of monoclinic (M) → hexagonal (H) → wurtzite (W) → zinc blende (C) when lowering the growth temperature from 850 to 600 °C. At the highest temperature, single-crystalline NWs were grown in the thermodynamically stable M phase. Two types of H phase exhibited 1.8 nm periodic superlattice structures owing to the distinctively ordered Ga sites. They consisted of three rotational variants of the M phase along the growth direction ([001] M = [0001] H/W ) but with different sequences in the variants. The phases shared the same crystallographic axis within the NWs, producing novel core-shell structures to illustrate the phase evolution. The relative stabilities of these phases were predicted using density functional theory calculations, and the results support the successive phase evolution. Polytypes of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide can extend the architecture and application of nanostructures. Herein, Nb 1- x V x Se 2 alloy nanosheets in the full composition range ( x ) were synthesized by a colloidal reaction. At x = 0.1-0.3, a phase transition occurred from various hexagonal (three 2H and one 4H types) phase NbSe 2 to an atomically homogeneous 1T phase VSe 2 . Density functional theory calculations also revealed a polytypic phase transition at x = 0.3, which was shifted close to 0 in the presence of Se vacancies. Furthermore, the calculations validate favorable formation of Se vacancies at the phase transition. The sample at x = 0.3 exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . The Gibbs free energy indicates that the catalytic HER performance is correlated with the active Se vacancy sites of polytypic structures.

Alloys of transition-metal dichalcogenide can display distinctive phase evolution because of their two-dimensional structures. Herein, we report the colloidal synthesis of Mo 1- x V x Se 2 alloy nanosheets with full composition tuning. Alloying led to a phase transition at x = 0.7 from the semiconducting 2H phase MoSe 2 to the metallic 1T phase VSe 2 . It also produced significant V and Se vacancies, which became the richest in the 2H phase at x = 0.3-0.5. Extensive spin-polarized density functional theory calculations consistently predicted the 2H-1T phase transition at x = 0.7, in agreement with the experimental results. The vacancy formation energy also supports the formation of V and Se vacancies. Alloying in the 2H phase enhanced the electrocatalytic performance toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at x = 0.3 (in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 ) or 0.4 (in 1 M KOH). The Gibbs free energy along the HER pathway indicates that this maximum performance is due to the highest concentration of active V and Se vacancy sites.

Earth-abundant transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheets have emerged as an excellent catalyst for electrochemical water splitting to generate H 2 . Alloying the nanosheets with heteroatoms is a promising strategy to enhance their catalytic performance. Herein, we synthesized hexagonal (2H) phase Mo 1- x Nb x Se 2 nanosheets over the whole composition range using a solvothermal reaction. Alloying results in a variety of atomic-scale crystal defects such as Se vacancies, metal vacancies, and adatoms. The defect content is maximized when x approaches 0.5. Detailed structure analysis revealed that the NbSe 2 bonding structures in the alloy phase are more disordered than the MoSe 2 ones. Compared to MoSe 2 and NbSe 2 , Mo 0.5 Nb 0.5 Se 2 exhibits much higher electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction. First-principles calculation was performed for the formation energy in the models for vacancies and adatoms, supporting that the alloy phase has more defects than either NbSe 2 or MoSe 2 . The calculation predicted that the separated NbSe 2 domain at x = 0.5 favors the concurrent formation of Nb/Se vacancies and adatoms in a highly cooperative way. Moreover, the Gibbs free energy along the reaction path suggests that the enhanced HER performance of alloy nanosheets originates from the higher concentration of defects that favor H atom adsorption.

Recently, extensive efforts have been directed at finding novel 2D-layered structures with anisotropic crystal structures. Herein, the in-plane anisotropic optical and (photo)electrical properties of 2D SiAs nanosheets synthesized using a solid-state reaction and subsequent mechanical exfoliation are reported. The angle-resolved polarized Raman spectrum shows high in-plane anisotropy of the phonon vibration modes, which are consistent with the theoretical prediction. Field-effect transistor devices fabricated using the SiAs nanosheets demonstrate significant anisotropy in the hole mobility with an anisotropic ratio as high as 5.5. Photodetectors fabricated with single SiAs nanosheet exhibit high sensitivity in the UV-visible region, and the anisotropic ratio of the photocurrent reaches 5.3 at 514.5 nm and 2.3 at 325 nm. Two-dimensional ReSe 2 has emerged as a promising electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but its catalytic activity needs to be further improved. Herein, we synthesized Re 1- x Mo x Se 2 alloy nanosheets with the whole range of x (0-100%) using a hydrothermal reaction. The phase evolved in the order of 1T″ (triclinic) → 1T' (monoclinic) → 2H (hexagonal) upon increasing x . In the nanosheets with x = 10%, the substitutional Mo atoms tended to aggregate in the 1T″ ReSe 2 phase with Se vacancies. The incorporation of the 1T' phase makes the alloy nanosheets more metallic than the end compositions. The 10% Mo substitution significantly enhanced the electrocatalytic performance toward HER (in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 ), with a current of 10 mA cm -2 at an overpotential of 77 mV ( vs RHE) and a Tafel slope of 42 mV dec -1 . First-principles calculations of the three phases (1T″, 2H, and 1T') predicted a phase transition of 1T″-2H at x ≈ 65% as well as the production of a 1T' phase along the composition tuning, which are consistent with the experiments. At x = 12.5%, two Mo atoms prefer to form a pair along the Re 4 chains. Gibbs free energy along the reaction path indicates that the best HER performance of nanosheets with 10% Mo originates from the Mo atoms that form Mo-H when there are adjacent Se vacancies.

Two-dimensional Re dichalcogenide nanostructures are promising electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report the adatom doping of various transition metals (TM = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) in ReSe 2 nanosheets synthesized using a solvothermal reaction. As the atomic number of TM increases from Mn to Cu, the adatoms on Re sites become more favored over the substitution. In the case of Ni, the fraction of adatoms reaches 90%. Ni doping resulted in the most effective enhancement in the HER catalytic performance, which was characterized by overpotentials of 82 and 109 mV at 10 mA cm -2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH, respectively, and the Tafel slopes of 54 and 81 mV dec -1 . First-principles calculations predicted that the adatom doping structures (TMs on Re sites) have higher catalytic activity compared with the substitution ones. The adsorbed H atoms formed a midgap hybridized state via direct bonding with the orbitals of TM adatom. The present work provides a deeper understanding into how TM doping can provide the catalytically active sites in these ReSe 2 nanosheets.

Two-dimensional MoSe 2 has emerged as a promising electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), although its catalytic activity needs to be further improved. Herein, we report Se-rich MoSe 2 nanosheets synthesized using a hydrothermal reaction, displaying much enhanced HER performance at the Se/Mo ratio of 2.3. The transition from the 2H to the 1T' phase occurred as Se/Mo exceeded 2. Structural analysis revealed the presence of Se adatoms as well as the formation of Se-Se bonding. Based on first-principles calculations, we propose two equally stable Se-rich structures. In the first one, excess Se atoms bridge two MoSe 2 layers via the interlayer Se-Se bonds. In the second one, the Se atoms substitute for the Mo atoms, and extra Se atoms are added closest to the Mo-substituted Se. Calculation of Gibbs free energy along the reaction path indicates that the Se adatoms of the second model are the most active sites for HER.

2D MoS 2 nanostructures have recently attracted considerable attention because of their outstanding electrocatalytic properties. The synthesis of unique Co-Ru-MoS 2 hybrid nanosheets with excellent catalytic activity toward overall water splitting in alkaline solution is reported. 1T' phase MoS 2 nanosheets are doped homogeneously with Co atoms and decorated with Ru nanoparticles. The catalytic performance of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is characterized by low overpotentials of 52 and 308 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and Tafel slopes of 55 and 50 mV decade -1 in 1.0 m KOH, respectively. Analysis of X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectra of the catalysts show that the MoS 2 well retained its metallic 1T' phase, which guarantees good electrical conductivity during the reaction. The Gibbs free energy calculation for the reaction pathway in alkaline electrolyte confirms that the Ru nanoparticles on the Co-doped MoS 2 greatly enhance the HER activity. Water adsorption and dissociation take place favorably on the Ru, and the doped Co further catalyzes HER by making the reaction intermediates more favorable. Two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 nanostructures have been extensively investigated in recent years because of their fascinating electrocatalytic properties. Herein, we report 2D hybrid nanostructures consisting of 1T' phase MoS2 and Fe-phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules that exhibit excellent catalytic activity toward both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). X-ray absorption spectra revealed an increased Fe-N distance (2.04 Å) in the hybrid complex relative to the isolated FePc. Spin-polarized density functional theory calculations predicted that the Fe center moves toward the MoS2 layer and induces a non-planar structure with an increased Fe-N distance of 2.05 Å, which supports the experimental results. The experiments and calculations consistently show a significant charge transfer from FePc to stabilize the hybrid complex. The excellent HER catalytic performance of FePc-MoS2 is characterized by a low Tafel slope of 32 mV dec-1 at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and an overpotential of 0.123 V. The ORR catalytic activity is superior to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst in pH 13 electrolyte, with a more positive half-wave potential (0.89 vs. 0.84 V), a smaller Tafel slope (35 vs. 87 mV·dec-1), and a much better durability (9.3% vs. 40% degradation after 20 h). Such remarkable catalytic activity is ascribed to the HER-active 1T' phase MoS2 and the ORR-active nonplanar Fe-N4 site of FePc.

Two-dimensional MoS 2 meets porphyrin molecules to form unique 1T' phase intercalated complexes via a one-step procedure of hydrothermal reactions. The resultant Mn-porphyrin-MoS 2 exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction, with a Tafel slope of 35 mV dec -1 and 10 mA cm -2 at an overpotential of 0.125 V. Spin-polarized density functional theory calculations confirmed that the intercalation of Mn-porphyrin into 1T'-MoS 2 is quite favourable due to strong charge transfer from Mn metals. Their outstanding catalytic performance could be ascribed to the high electron concentration as well as the low activation barrier of the Heyrovsky reaction.

As promising candidates for anode materials in lithium ion batteries (LIB), two-dimensional tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) and WS 2 @(N-doped) graphite composites were synthesized, and their electrochemical properties were comprehensibly studied in conjunction with calculations. The WS 2 nanosheets, WS 2 @graphite, and WS 2 @N-doped graphite (N-graphite) exhibit outstanding cycling performance with capacities of 633, 780, and 963 mA h g -1 , respectively. To understand their lithium storage mechanism, first-principles calculations involving a series of ab initio NVT- NPT molecular dynamics simulations were conducted. The calculated discharge curves for amorphous phase are well matched with the experimental ones, and the capacities reach 620, 743, and 915 mA h g -1 for WS 2 , WS 2 @graphite, and WS 2 @N-graphite, respectively. The large capacities of the two composites can be attributed to the tendency of W and Li atoms to interact with graphite, suppressing the formation of W metal clusters. In the case of WS 2 @N-graphite, vigorous amorphization of the N-graphite enhances the interaction of W and Li atoms with the fragmented N-graphite in such a way that unfavorable Li-W repulsion is avoided at very early stage of lithiation. As a result, the volume expansion in WS 2 @graphite and WS 2 @N-graphite is calculated to be remarkably small (only 6 and 44%, respectively, versus 150% for WS 2 ). Therefore WS 2 @(N-)graphite composites are expected to be almost free of mechanical pulverization after repeated cycles, which makes them promising and excellent candidates for high-performance LIBs.

Photocatalytic water splitting is a vital technology for clean renewable energy. Despite enormous progress, the search for earth-abundant photocatalysts with long-term stability and high catalytic activity is still an important issue. We report three possible polymorphs of nickel selenide (orthorhombic phase NiSe 2 , cubic phase NiSe 2 , and hexagonal phase NiSe) as bifunctional catalysts for water-splitting photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. Photocathodes or photoanodes were fabricated by depositing the nickel selenide nanocrystals (NCs) onto p- or n-type Si nanowire arrays. Detailed structural analysis reveals that compared to the other two types, the orthorhombic NiSe 2 NCs are more metallic and form less surface oxides. As a result, the orthorhombic NiSe 2 NCs significantly enhanced the performance of water-splitting PEC cells by increasing the photocurrents and shifting the onset potentials. The high photocurrent is ascribed to the excellent catalytic activity toward water splitting, resulting in a low charge-transfer resistance. The onset potential shift can be determined by the shift of the flat-band potential. A large band bending occurs at the electrolyte interface, so that photoelectrons or photoholes are efficiently generated to accelerate the photocatalytic reaction at the active sites of orthorhombic NiSe 2 . The remarkable bifunctional photocatalytic activity of orthorhombic NiSe 2 promises efficient PEC water splitting.

The imminent global energy crisis and current environmental issues have stimulated considerable research on high-performance catalysts for sustainable hydrogen energy generation. Two-dimensional layered MoS2 has recently drawn worldwide attention because of its excellent catalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In the present work, we prepared nitrogen (N)-rich 1T' (distorted 1T) phase MoS2 layered nanostructures using different alkyl amines with 1-4 nitrogen atoms (methylamine, ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, and triethylenetetramine) as intercalants. The amine molecules intercalate at 10 atomic%, and simultaneously supply the N atoms that substitute the S atoms to produce the N-doped MoS2, whose composition is MoS2(1-x)Nx, where x = 0.1-0.26. MoS2 prepared with amines having more N atoms has enhanced catalytic HER performance: a Tafel slope of 36 mV dec-1 and 10 mA cm-2 at -160 mV (vs. RHE). First-principles calculations showed that the amine intercalation and N doping increase the density of states near the Fermi level in a narrow range and bring about an effective overlap of the dz2(Mo), pz(S), and pz(N) states. These factors in turn increase the carrier (electron) concentration and mobility for improved HER. The calculation also predicted that the most active site is S vacancies. The present work illustrates how the HER catalytic performance of 1T' phase MoS2 can be effectively controlled by the amine molecules.

The novel properties of two-dimensional materials have motivated extensive studies focused on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), which led to many interesting findings in recent years. Further advances in this area would require the development of effective methods for producing nanostructured TMDs with a controlled structure. Herein, we report unique MoS2 layered nanostructures intercalated with dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DMPD) with various concentrations, synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal reaction. The MoS2 layers possess a significantly expanded interlayer spacing. Remarkably, as the concentration of DMPD increases, the MoS2 preferentially adopts a unique metallic 1T' (distorted 1T) phase. The intercalated MoS2 exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction. First-principles calculations show that the phase transition from 2H to 1T' phase occurs with increasing concentrations of DMPD, which can be accelerated by the S vacancies. A significant charge transfer from the DMPD molecules to MoS2 stabilizes the 1T' over the 2H phase, driving the 2H-1T' phase conversion. The DMPD and the S vacancies increased the carrier concentration, which leads to the enhanced catalytic performance. The present work illustrates how the phase control of TMDs can be effectively achieved by the intercalation of electron-donating molecules.

We investigate the temperature dependence of infrared properties at nanometer length scales in La 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 (LSMO) thin film with a thickness of 47 unit cells grown on SrTiO 3 substrate. The infrared nano-imaging experiments were performed using a near-field optical microscope in conjunction with a variable temperature heating stage. The near-field infrared data is consistent with the bulk of the LSMO film undergoing the thermally-driven non-percolative second-order transition from a metallic, ferromagnetic phase to an insulating, paramagnetic phase. We find persistent infrared contrast on the nanoscale that is independent of temperature and which we attribute to two novel phases with different conductivities coexisting in the vicinity of the film-substrate interface. These two coexisting phases at the film-substrate interface do not undergo the metal-insulator transition (MIT) and hence are different from the metallic, ferromagnetic and insulating, paramagnetic phases in the bulk of the film. At temperatures approaching the nominal MIT temperature, repeated scans of the same microscopic area at constant temperature reveal bimodal fluctuation of the near-field infrared amplitude. We interpret this phenomenon as slow, critical fluctuations of the conductivity in the bulk of the LSMO film.

Aims: Procalcitonin (PCT) has been recently accepted as a marker for diagnosing infection. The aim of the present study was to determine whether PCT levels are associated with infection severity of diabetic foot ulcers and whether PCT levels would be helpful to differentiate infected diabetic foot ulcer (IDFU) from IDFU associated with other infectious diseases (IDFU+O)., Methods: We prospectively included 123 diabetic patients hospitalized for IDFU. Infection severity of diabetic foot ulcers was graded according to the Infectious Diseases Society of America-International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot clinical classification of diabetic foot infection. Chest radiograph, urinalysis, urine microscopy, urine culture, and blood cultures (if fever was present) were performed for all patients to diagnose other infectious diseases. Laboratory parameters were measured from blood venous samples., Results: PCT (Spearman's ρ=0.338, P<0.001) and C-reactive protein (Spearman's ρ=0.477, P<0.001) levels were significantly associated with infection severity of diabetic foot ulcers. However, only PCT levels could differentiate patients with associated infectious diseases from patients with no concomitant infection (area under the receiver-operator characteristic curve 0.869, P<0.0001; cut-off value 0.59; sensitivity 94.7; specificity 88.5)., Conclusion: PCT and CRP levels positively correlated with infection severity of diabetic foot ulcers and PCT levels>0.59ng/mL in patients with IDFU may be associated with other systemic bacterial infection., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) are central to key renewable energy technologies, including fuel cells and water splitting. Despite tremendous effort, the development of low-cost electrode catalysts with high activity remains a great challenge. In this study, we report the synthesis of CoSe2 and NiSe2 nanocrystals (NCs) as excellent bifunctional catalysts for simultaneous generation of H2 and O2 in water-splitting reactions. NiSe2 NCs exhibit superior electrocatalytic efficiency in OER, with a Tafel slope (b) of 38 mV dec(-1) (in 1 M KOH), and HER, with b = 44 mV dec(-1) (in 0.5 M H2SO4). In comparison, CoSe2 NCs are less efficient for OER (b = 50 mV dec(-1)), but more efficient for HER (b = 40 mV dec(-1)). It was found that CoSe2 NCs contained more metallic metal ions than NiSe2, which could be responsible for their improved performance in HER. Robust evidence for surface oxidation suggests that the surface oxide layers are the actual active sites for OER, and that CoSe2 (or NiSe2) under the surface act as good conductive layers. The higher catalytic activity of NiSe2 is attributed to their oxide layers being more active than those of CoSe2. Furthermore, we fabricated a Si-based photoanode by depositing NiSe2 NCs onto an n-type Si nanowire array, which showed efficient photoelectrochemical water oxidation with a low onset potential (0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode) and high durability. The remarkable catalytic activity, low cost, and scalability of NiSe2 make it a promising candidate for practical water-splitting solar cells.

We report achieving of efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction using composition-controlled iron phosphide (FeP and FeP2) nanowires. The respective Tafel slopes of nanowire arrays were 39 and 37 mV dec(-1) in 0.5 M H2SO4, and 75 and 67 mV dec(-1) in 1 M KOH. The richer P composition produced excellent electrocatalytic efficiency.

We reported a ratiometric two-photon fluorescent probe (SG1) for β-galactosidase (β-gal) and its application to quantitative detection of β-gal activity during cellular senescence in live cells and in aged tissues. This probe is characterized by a significant two-photon excited fluorescence, a marked blue-to-yellow emission color change in response to β-gal, easy loading, insensitivity to pH and reactive oxygen species (ROS), high photostability, and low cytotoxicity. In addition, we show that SG1 labeling is an effective tool for quantitative detection of senescence-associated β-gal activity at the subcellular level in situ. This finding demonstrates that SG1 will find useful applications in biomedical research, including studies of cell aging.

Studies of stochasticity in gene expression typically make use of fluorescent protein reporters, which permit the measurement of expression levels within individual cells by fluorescence microscopy. Analysis of such microscopy images is almost invariably based on a segmentation algorithm, where the image of a cell or cluster is analyzed mathematically to delineate individual cell boundaries. However segmentation can be ineffective for studying bacterial cells or clusters, especially at lower magnification, where outlines of individual cells are poorly resolved. Here we demonstrate an alternative method for analyzing such images without segmentation. The method employs a comparison between the pixel brightness in phase contrast vs fluorescence microscopy images. By fitting the correlation between phase contrast and fluorescence intensity to a physical model, we obtain well-defined estimates for the different levels of gene expression that are present in the cell or cluster. Aberrant activation of hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor (HGF/SF) and its receptor, Met, is involved in the development and progression of many human cancers. In the cell-based screening assay, (-)epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) inhibited HGF/SF-Met signaling as indicated by its inhibitory activity on HGF/SF-induced cell scattering and uPA activation (IC50=15.8 microgram/ml). Further analysis revealed that EGCG at low doses specifically inhibited HGF/SF-induced tyrosine phosphorylation of Met but not epidermal growth factor (EGF)-induced phosphorylation of EGF receptor (EGFR). On the other hand, high-dose EGCG decreased both Met and EGFR proteins. We also found that EGCG did not act on the intracellular portion of Met receptor tyrosine kinase, i.e., it inhibited InlB-dependent activation of Met but not NGF-induced activation of Trk-Met hybrid receptor. This inhibition decreased HGF-induced migration and invasion by parental or HGF/SF-transfected B16F10 melanoma cells in vitro in either a paracrine or autocrine manner. Furthermore, EGCG inhibited the invasion/metastasis of HGF/SF-transfected B16F10 melanoma cells in mice. Our data suggest the possible use of EGCG in human cancers associated with dysregulated paracrine or autocrine HGF/SF-Met signaling.

We evaluated the nuclear actin accumulation as a new marker of cellular senescence, using human diploid fibroblast (HDF), chondrocyte primary cultures, Mv1Lu epithelial cells, and Huh7 cancer cells. Nuclear accumulation of globular actin (G-actin) and dephosphorylated cofilin was highly significant in the senescent HDF cells, accompanied with inhibition of LIM kinase (LIMK) -1 activity. When nuclear export of the actin was induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate, DNA synthesis of the senescent cells increased significantly, accompanied with changes of morphologic and biochemical profiles, such as increased RB protein phosphorylation and decreased expressions of p21(WAF1), cytoplasmic p-extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2, and caveolins 1 and 2. Significance of these findings was strengthened additionally by the fact that nuclear actin export of young HDF cells was inhibited by the treatment with leptomycin B and mutant cofilin transfection, whose LIMK-1 phosphorylation site was lost, and the old cell phenotypes were duplicated with nuclear actin accumulation, suggesting that nuclear actin accumulation was accompanied with G1 arrest during cellular senescence. The aforementioned changes were observed not only in the replicative senescence but also in the senescence induced by treatment of HDF cells, Mv1Lu, primary culture of human chondrocytes, or Huh7 cells with H-ras virus infection, hydroxyurea, deferoxamine, or H(2)O(2). Nuclear actin accumulation was much more sensitive and an earlier event than the well-known, senescence-associated beta-galactosidase activity.

The mechanism of senescence-associated cytoplasmic induction of p-Erk1/2 (SA-p-Erk1/2) proteins in human diploid fibroblasts was investigated. p-Erk1/2 proteins were efficiently dephosphorylated in vitro by protein phosphatases 1 and 2A (PP1/2A) and MAPK phosphatase 3 (MKP3). Specific activity of PP1/2A and MKP3 activity significantly decreased during cellular senescence, whereas their protein expression levels did not. To investigate possible mechanism of phosphatase inactivation, we measured reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation by fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis and found it was much higher in mid-old cells than the young cells. Treating the young cells once with 1 mm H2O2 remarkably induced p-Erk1/2 expression; however, it was transient unless repeatedly treated until 72 h. Multiple treatment of the cells with 0.2 mm H2O2 significantly duplicated inactivation of PP1/2A; however, thiol-specific reagents could reverse the PP1/2A activities, suggesting the oxidation of cysteine molecule in PP1/2A by the increased ROS. When the cells were pretreated with 10 mm N-acetyl-l-cysteine for 1 h, Erk1/2 activation was completely blocked. To elucidate which cysteine residue and/or metal ion in PP1/2A was modified by H2O2, electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry analyses were performed with purified PP1C-alpha and found Cys62-SO3H and Cys105-SO3H, implicating the tertiary structure perturbation. H2O2 inhibited purified PP1C-alpha activity by both oxidation of Cys residues and metal ion(s), evidenced by dithiothreitol and ascorbate-restoration assay. In summary, SA-p-Erk1/2 was most likely due to the oxidation of PP1/2A, which resulted from the continuous exposure of the cells to vast amounts of ROS generated during cellular senescence by oxidation of Cys62 and Cys105 in PP1C-alpha and metal ion(s).

In order to investigate signal transduction pathways and related changes of actin cytoskeleton organization in cellular senescence, H-ras double mutants--V12S35, V12G37, and V12C40--were constitutively expressed in human foreskin fibroblast (HDF). Senescent HDF cells as well as the H-ras mutant expressers accumulated p-Erk1/2 in the cytoplasm with increased MEK activity and failed to translocate it to nuclei on EGF stimulation. Senescent HDF cells, V12S35 and V12G37 expressers, revealed a failure to export actin fiber from nucleus to cytoplasm and also to form stress fibers. Perinuclear expression of Rac1 was prominent in the HDF cells and V12C40 expresser; however, in the V12S35 expresser, translocation of Rac1 from perinucleus to nucleus and strong expression of RhoA were obvious. In summary, the H-ras double mutant expressers induced premature senescence through the MEK pathway, accompanied by nuclear accumulation of actin and Rac1 proteins, cytoplasmic retention of p-Erk1/2, and marked induction of RhoA expression, suggesting the translocational inefficiency of the intracellular proteins in the senescent HDF cells.

In order to investigate the role of signal transduction and the related changes of actin cytoskeleton organization in the process of cellular senescence, H-ras double mutants--V12S35, V12G37 and V12C40--proteins were expressed constitutively in human diploid fibroblast (HDF) cells by retrovirus infection at PD26. Constitutive expression of V12S35, V12G37 and V12C40 proteins induced premature senescence at PD38, PD47 and PD50, respectively, in contrast to the control cells at PD59. Premature senescence was evidenced by the slow cellular growth rate and SA-beta-galactosidase expression accompanied by morphological changes such as flat and large cell shape. Senescent HDF cells as well as the H-ras mutant expressers accumulated p-Erk1/2 in the cytoplasm with increased MEK activity and failed to translocate it to nuclei on EGF stimulation. Senescent HDF cells as well as V12S35 and V12G37 expressers were unable to export actin fibers from nucleus to cytoplasm, form stress fibers through the MAPK and Ral.GDS pathways. Perinuclear expression of Racl was prominent in the HDF cells and V12C40 expresser, while translocation of Racl from perinucleus to nucleus and strong expression of RhoA were observed in the V12S35 expresser. In summary, the induced premature senescence by H-ras double mutants were accompanied by nuclear accumulation of actin and Racl proteins, cytoplasmic retention of p-Erk1/2 and marked induction of RhoA expression mainly through dysregulation of the MEK pathway.

Alloplastic implants are known to be inert for many years, though complications are infrequently reported many years after their insertion. We report the case of a patient who had undergone a blow-out fracture repair five years before the discovery of a hematic cyst. He had been free of symptoms for the first five years after his orbital floor repair but then developed pain on eyeball movement and persistent vertical diplopia, which finally led to surgical intervention. At surgery, a hematic cyst was found to have formed around the implanted silastic plate. When alloplastic material is used in orbital fracture repair, we should be alert for late complications which may occur many years after surgery.
