A second workshop on small x physics, within the Small x Collaboration, was held in Lund in June 2002 with the aim of over-viewing recent theoretical progress in this area and summarizing the experimental status. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Jan Kwiecinski, who died unexpectedly on August 29, 2003., Comment: 32 pages, 33 figures

Transverse momentum distribution of gauge bosons $W^{\pm}$ and $Z^0$ is calculated using unintegrated parton distributions obtained by solving leading order CCFM equation(s) in the impact parameter space. For illustration we compare the results of the fixed-order collinear, soft-gluon resummation and CCFM approaches. A parameter of a nonperturbative form factor is adjusted to the D0 data. In contrast to the collinear approach, the leading order calculation based on the unintegrated CCFM parton distributions generates transverse momentum distributions of gauge bosons, which are almost consistent with experimental data provided the parameter of the nonperturbative form factor is appropriately adjusted. The $W^+$-$W^-$ asymmetry is calculated as a function of the boson rapidity and transverse momentum. Predictions are given for RHIC and LHC., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

The system of CCFM equations for unintegrated parton distributions in a photon is considered in the single loop approximation. We include quarks and non-singular parts of the splitting functions in the corresponding evolution equations. We solve the system of CCFM equations utilising the transverse coordinate representation which diagonalises these equations in the single loop approximation. The results for the unintegrated gluon distributions in a photon are presented and confronted with the approximate form expressing those distributions in terms of the integrated gluon and quark distributions and a suitably defined Sudakov-like form factor., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

A saturation model for the total gamma-gamma and gamma*-gamma* cross-sections and for the real photon structure function F_2^gamma(x,Q^2) is described. We introduce a saturation model for photon-photon interactions, based on a QCD dipole picture of high energy scattering. The two-dipole cross-section is assumed to satisfy the saturation property. The aim of this paper is to summarize the general status of our understanding of small x physics. It is based on presentations and discussions at an informal meeting on this topic held in Lund, Sweden, in March 2001. This document also marks the founding of an informal collaboration between experimentalists and theoreticians with a special interest in small x physics. We utilise the fact that the CCFM equation in the single loop approximation can be diagonalised by the Fourier-Bessel transform. The analytic solution of the CCFM equation for the moments $f_{\omega}(b,Q)$ of the scale dependent gluon distribution is obtained, where $b$ is the transverse coordinate conjugate to the transverse momentum of the gluon. The unintegrated gluon distributions obtained from this solution are analysed. It is shown how the approximate treatment of the exact solution makes it possible to express the unintegrated gluon distributions in terms of the integrated ones. The corresponding approximate expressions for the unintegrated gluon distribution are compared with exact solution of the CCFM equation in the single loop approximation., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

We study the impact of the QCD DGLAP evolution on the geometric scaling of the gluon distributions which is expected to hold at small x within the saturation models. To this aim we solve the DGLAP evolution equations with the initial conditions provided along the critical line Q^2=Q_s^2(x) where Q_s^2(x) = Q_0^2 x^{-\lambda}and satisfying geometric scaling. Both fixed and running coupling cases are studied. We show that in the fixed coupling case the geometric scaling at low x is stable against the DGLAP evolution for sufficiently large values of the parameter \lambda and in the double logarithmic approximation of the DGLAP evolution this happens for \lambda > 4N_c\alpha_s/\pi. In the running coupling case geometric scaling is found to be approximately preserved at very small x. The residual geometric scaling violation in this case can be approximately factored out and the corresponding form-factor controlling this violation is found., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, new figures with illustration of the geometric scaling, additional references added

We formulate and analyse a saturation model for the total gamma gamma and gamma* gamma* cross-sections and for the real photon structure function F_2^gamma(x,Q^2). The model is based on a picture in which the gamma* gamma* total cross-section for arbitrary photon virtualities is driven by the interaction of colour dipoles, into which the virtual photons fluctuate. The cross-section describing this interaction is assumed to satisfy the saturation property with the saturation radius taken from the Golec-Biernat and Wusthoff analysis of the gamma* p interaction at HERA. The model is supplemented by the QPM and non-pomeron reggeon contributions. The model gives a very good description of the data on the gamma gamma total cross-section, on the photon structure function F_2^gamma(x,Q^2) at low x and on the gamma* gamma* cross-section extracted from LEP double tagged events. Production of heavy flavours in gamma gamma collisions is also studied. We analyse the azimuthal decorrelation of Mueller-Navelet dijets produced in the collisions at Tevatron energies using a BFKL framework which incorporates dominant subleading effects. We show that these effects significantly reduce the decorrelation yet they are still insufficient to give satisfactory description of experimental data. The basic concepts relevant for the theoretical description of deep inelastic scattering within the QCD improved parton model are introduced. Recent developments in low $x$ DIS and in deep inelastic diffraction are briefly summarised. This includes discussion of the BFKL dynamics including the subleading effects and of the saturation model. Starting from an unintegrated gluon distribution which satisfies a `unified' equation which embodies both BFKL and DGLAP behaviour, we compute the shadowing corrections to the integrated gluon in the small x domain that will be accessible at the LHC. The corrections are calculated via the Korchegov equation, which incorporates the leading ln(1/x) triple-Pomeron vertex, and are approximately resummed using a simple Pade technique. We find that the shadowing corrections to xg(x,Q^2) are rather small in the HERA domain, but lead to a factor of 2 suppression in the region x \sim 10^-6, Q^2 \sim 4 GeV^2 accessible to experiments at the LHC., Comment: LaTeX, 8 pages including 1 figure, second version with extra comments and references, accepted by Physics Letters B

We perform a detailed analysis of the total inelastic cross-section for gamma*gamma* collisions. Different contributions coming from the quark box diagram, reggeons, the soft and hard pomeron are included. The QCD pomeron contribution contains a dominant part of subleading effects which reduces its intercept and delays the onset of the asymptotic pomeron to high energies. Estimates of the cross-section for doubly-tagged (e+e- to e+e- hadrons) events are presented and compared with the existing LEP data. Good agreement between the theoretical results and the experimental data is found. The novel possibilities of probing the photon structure and high energy limit of QCD at photon colliders are summarised. We discuss the photon structure function $F_2^{\gamma}(x,Q^2)$, the gluon distribution in the photon and the spin dependent structure function $g_1^{\gamma}(x,Q^2)$ of the photon and emphasise advantages of the photon colliders for measuring these quantities. We observe that the saturation model of deep inelastic scattering, which successfully describes inclusive and diffractive data at small x, predicts a geometric scaling of the total gamma^* p cross section in the region of small Bjorken variable x. The geometric scaling in this case means that the cross section is a function of only one dimensionless variable tau = Q^2 R_0^2(x), where the function R_0(x) (called saturation radius) decreases with decreasing x. We show that the experimental data from HERA in the region x<0.01 confirm the expectations of this scaling over a very broad region of Q^2. Spin dependent structure function $g_1^{\gamma}(x,Q^2)$ of the polarised photon is analysed within the formalism based upon the unintegrated spin dependent parton distributions incorporating the LO Altarelli-Parisi evolution and the double $ln^2(1/x)$ resummation at low values of Bjorken parameter x. We analyse the effects of the double $ln^2(1/x)$ resummation on the behaviour of $g_1^{\gamma}(x,Q^2)$ in the low x region which may be accessible in future linear $e^+e^-$ and $e\gamma$ colliders. Sensitivity of the predictions on the possible nonperturbative gluon content of the polarised photons is analysed. The gluon distribution f(x, k_t^2,mu^2), unintegrated over the transverse momentum k_t of the gluon, satisfies the angular-ordered CCFM equation which interlocks the dependence on the scale k_t with the scale \mu of the probe. We show how, to leading logarithmic accuracy, the equation can be simplified to a single scale problem. In particular we demonstrate how to determine the two-scale unintegrated distribution f(x,k_t^2,mu^2) from knowledge of the integrated gluon obtained from a unified scheme embodying both BFKL and DGLAP evolution., Comment: 16 pages LaTeX, 3 eps figures

We discuss a problem concerning the ultrahigh energy neutrino propagation through the Earth. We present calculation of the neutrino-nucleon cross section at high energies, based on the unifed evolution equation at small x. We briefly present the motivation for studying the processes mediated by the QCD pomeron at high energy e+e- colliders. We describe the behaviour of the cross-section for the reaction gamma gamma to J/psi J/psi obtained from the BFKL equation with dominant non-leading corrections. A parametrisation of the real photon structure function F_2^gamma in the low Q^2, low x region is formulated. It includes both the VMD and the QCD components, the latter suitably extrapolated to the low Q^2 region and based on arbitrary parton distributions in the photon. The parametrisation used together with the GRV and GRS' parton densities describes reasonably well the existing high energy data on F_2^gamma, sigma(gamma,gamma) and the low Q^2 data on sigma(gamma^*, gamma). Predictions for sigma(gamma,gamma) and for sigma(gamma^* ,gamma) for energies which may become accessible in future linear colliders are also given., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

We estimate the cross-section and asymmetry relevant for the production of forward jets in polarised deep inelastic scattering in the region of small values of $x$ which can be probed at possible polarised HERA measurements. The kinematical cuts implemented in our analysis are the same as those which were used in the unpolarised deep inelastic scattering at HERA. The calculations are based on the double ln^2(1/x) resummation which controls the polarised deep inelastic scattering for small values of the Bjorken parameter x. We show that this resummation substantially enhances the corresponding cross-section and asymmetry. The predicted value of the asymmetry is found to vary between -0.01 and -0.04 within the small x region which can possibly be probed at polarised HERA measurements., Comment: 9 pages, latex, 3 figures

Theoretical description of the spin dependent structure function g_1(x,Q^2) in the region of low values of x and Q^2 is presented. It contains the Vector Meson Dominance contribution and the QCD improved parton model suitably extended to the low Q^2 domain. Theoretical predictions are compared with the recent experimental data in the low x, low Q^2 region.

We argue that the production of forward jets in polarised deep inelastic scattering can be a useful tool for probing the double $ln^2(1/x)$ resummation effects which control the polarised deep inelastic scattering for small values of the Bjorken parameter $x$. We solve the corresponding integral equations generating the double $ln^2(1/x)$ resummation and calculate the differential structure function describing the forward jet production in the small $x$ regime which can possibly be probed by the polarised HERA measurements. We show that these structure functions should exhibit the characteristic increase with decreasing $x/x_J$, where $x_J$ denotes the longitudinal momentum fraction of the parent proton carried by a jet, and we quantify this increase., Comment: 13 pages, latex, 5 figures

We calculate the total cross-section for $\gamma^* \gamma^*$ collisions and for the process $e^+ e^- \to e^+ e^- + hadrons$ with two tagged leptons assuming dominance of the QCD pomeron exchange. We solve the BFKL equation including the dominant subleading effects generated by the consistency constraint which restricts the available phase-space of the emitted gluons to the region inwhich the virtuality of the exchanged gluons is dominated by their transverse momentum squared. Estimate of the possible soft pomeron contribution to the $\gamma^* \gamma^*$ cross-section is also presented. At very high CM energies $W$ the calculated total $\gamma^* \gamma^*$ cross-section exhibits effective power-law $(W^2)^{\lambda}$ behaviour with $\lambda \sim 0.3$. We confront our results with the recent measurements at LEP and give predictions for the energies which can be accessible at TESLA and at other future linear $e^+ e^-$ colliders., Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, 3 figures

In this talk we would like to present recent calculations of the cross sections for the ultrahigh energy neutrinos interacting with nucleons. We briefly present the framework of unifed BFKL/DGLAP equations which resums all the leading log(1/x) effects as well as the subleading terms. The few free parameters which specify the input parton distributions are determined by fitting to HERA deep inelastic data. We then use these parton distributions to calculate the cross section for the neutrino-nucleon interactions at very high energies, up to 10^12 GeV. We do also investigate the attenuation of neutrinos when traversing through the Earth. We use the transport equation which we solve for different fluxes of high energy neutrinos (Active Galactic Nucleai, Gamma Ray Bursts, and top-down models). The contribution of the QCD pomeron to the processes: e+e- to e+e- J/psi J/psi and e+ e- to e+ e- hadrons (with tagged electrons) is discussed. We focus on reactions which occur via photon-photon collisions, with virtual photons coming from the Weizsaecker-Wiliams spectrum of the electrons. We stress the importance of the non-leading corrections to the BFKL equation and take into account dominant non-leading effects which come from the requirement that the virtuality of the exchanged gluons along the gluon ladder is controlled by their transverse momentum squared. The \gamma* \gamma* cross-sections are found to increase with increasing \gamma* \gamma* CM energy W as (W^2)^{\lambda_P} while the cross-section for \gamma\gamma to J/psi J/psi is found to increase as (W^2)^{2\lambda_P}. The parameter \lambda_P is slowly varying with energy W and takes the values lambda_P \sim 0.23 - 0.35 depending on the process. We also analyze the contribution of the soft pomeron for the total \gamma* \gamma* cross-section. We study the properties of dijet production in deep inelastic scattering using a unified BFKL/DGLAP framework, which includes important subleading ln (1/x) contributions. We calculate the azimuthal decorrelation between the jets. We compute the cross section for dijet production as a function of Q^2 and the jet transverse momentum, as well as calculate the total dijet rate. We compare predictions based on small x (QCD) dynamics with recent data for deep inelastic events containing forward jets or forward pi0 mesons. We quantify the effect of imposing the (higher order) consistency condition on the BFKL equation and study uncertainties inherent in the QCD predictions. The parametrisation of the photon structure function in the low Q^2 region is formulated. The structure function $g_1(x,Q^2)$ is analysed within the formalism based on unintegrated spin dependent parton distributions incorporating the LO Altarelli-Parisi evolution and the double $ln^2(1/x)$ resummation at low $x$. We quantitatively examine possible role of the latter for the small $x$ behaviour of the structure functions $g_1$ of the nucleon within the region which may be relevant for the possible polarized HERA measurements. We show that while the non-singlet structure function is dominated at low $x$ by ladder diagrams the contribution of the non-ladder bremsstrahlung terms is important for the singlet structure function. We calculate the cross sections for neutrino interactions with (isoscalar) nuclear targets in the energy domain all the way up to 10^12 GeV. Small x QCD effects are included by using a unified BFKL/DGLAP formalism which embodies non-leading log(1/x) contributions. The few free parameters which specify the input parton distributions are determined by fitting to HERA deep inelastic data. The attenuation of neutrinos transversing the Earth at different nadir angles is calculated for a variety of energy spectra for neutrinos originating from different sources (from Active Galactic Nuclei, Gamma ray bursts, top-down models), as well as for atmospheric neutrinos. Diffractive dijet photoproduction is proposed as a probe of the off-diagonal gluon distribution and its evolution. Predictions for the transverse momentum distribution of the jets are given. We propose exclusive diffractive dijet photoproduction as an ideal measure of the off-diagonal gluon distribution at high scales. We solve the off-diagonal evolution equations for the gluon and quark singlet over the full kinematic domain. We discuss the nature of the solutions of these equations, which embody both DGLAP and ERBL evolution. We give predictions for the transverse momentum distribution of the jets. The proton spin dependent structure function $g_1^p$ is analysed using the unified scheme incorporating both Altarelli-Parisi evolution and the double $ln^2(1/x)$ effects at low $x$. The reactions gamma-gamma to eta_c eta_c and gamma gamma to eta_c + X are discussed within the three gluon exchange model. We give predictions for the differential cross-sections and discuss feasibility of measuring these processes at LEP2 and TESLA. The total cross-sections were estimated to be approximately equal to 40 fb and 120 fb for gamma-gamma to eta_c eta_c and gamma-gamma to eta_c + X respectively assuming exchange of elementary gluons that corresponds to the odderon with intercept equal to unity. These values can be enhanced by a factor equal to 1.9 and 2.1 for LEP2 and TESLA energies if the odderon intercept is equal to 1.07. The estimate of cross-sections sigma(e^+ e^- to e^+ e^- eta_c eta_c) and sigma (e^+ e^- to e^+ e^- eta_c + X) for untagged e^+ and e^- is also given., Comment: 11 pages, Latex, epsf, 5 eps figures included

The "triple-Regge" analysis of subleading Reggeon contributions to the diffractive structure function in DIS at HERA is presented. The recently published data allow to estimate the only free parameter of the analysis related to the ratio of the RRP and PPP couplings. The large value of this ratio is prefered which is in agreement with analyses of soft hadronic interactions. The role of the subleading Reggeons as well as pions for the fast forward neutron production in diffractive processes is estimated. A unified equation for the non-singlet spin dependent structure function $g_1^{ns}(x,Q^2)$ which incorporates the complete leading order Altarelli-Parisi evolution at finite $x$ and double logarithmic $ ln^2(1/x)$ effects at $x \to 0$ is formulated. The solution of this equation reasonably agrees with the recent data obtained by the Spin Muon Collaboration., Comment: 10 pages, plain LATEX, 3 eps figures. We use the BFKL equation to calculate the rate of deep inelastic scattering events containing two forward jets (adjacent to the proton remnants) at HERA. We compare the production of two forward jets with that of only one forward jet (the "Mueller" process). We study the transverse momentum ($p_T$) spectrum of charged particles produced in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small Bjorken $x$ in the central region between the current jet and the proton remnants. We calculate the spectrum at large $p_T$ with the BFKL $\ln (1/x)$ resummation included and then repeat the calculation with it omitted. We find that data favour the former. We normalize our BFKL predictions by comparing with HERA data for DIS containing a forward jet. The shape of the $x$ distribution of DIS + jet data are also well described by BFKL dynamics., Comment: 11 pages, Latex, 7 ps figures
