We present our recent study of cross sections and angular distributions of projectile fragments from heavy-ion reactions at beam energy of 15 MeV/nucleon. We studied the production cross sections and the angular distributions of neutron-rich nuclides from collisions of a 86 Kr (15 MeV/nucleon) beam with heavy targets ( 64 Ni, 124 Sn and 238 U). Experimental data from our previous work at Texas A & M were compared with model calculations. Our calculations were based on a two-step approach: the dynamical stage of the collision was described with, first, the phenomenological Deep-Inelastic Transfer model (DIT) and, alternatively, with the microscopic Constrained Molecular Dynamics model (CoMD). The de-excitation of the hot heavy projectile fragments was performed with the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM). An overall good discription of the available data was obtained with the models employed. Furthermore, we performed calculations with a radioactive beam of 92 Kr (15 MeV/nucleon) interacting with a target of 238 U. We observed that the multinucleon transfer mechanism leads to extremely neutron-rich nuclides toward and beyond the astrophysical r-process path., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

We studied the production of neutron-rich nuclides in multinucleon transfer collisions of stable and radioactive beams in the mass range A=40-60. We first presented our experimental cross section data of projectile fragments from the reaction of 40Ar(15 MeV/nucleon) with 64Ni, 58Ni and 27Al. We then compared them with calculations based on either the deep-inelastic transfer (DIT) model or the constrained molecular dynamics (CoMD) model, followed by the statistical multifragmentation model (SMM). An overall good agreement of the calculations with the experimental data is obtained. We continued with calculations of the reaction of 40Ar (15 MeV/nucleon) with 238U target and then with reactions of 48Ca (15 MeV/nucleon) with 64Ni and 238U targets. In these reactions, neutron-rich rare isotopes with large cross sections are produced. These nuclides, in turn, can be assumed to form radioactive beams and interact with a subsequent target (preferably 238U), leading to the production of extremely neutron-rich and even new isotopes (e.g. 60Ca) in this mass range. We conclude that multinucleon transfer reactions with stable or radioactive beams at the energy of around 15 MeV/nucleon offer an effective route to access extremely neutron-rich rare isotopes for nuclear structure or reaction studies., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures

Background: Type I x-ray bursts are the most frequent thermonuclear explosions in the galaxy, resulting from thermonuclear runaway on the surface of an accreting neutron star. The $^{30}$S($\alpha$,p) reaction plays a critical role in burst models, yet insufficient experimental information is available to calculate a reliable, precise rate for this reaction. Purpose: Our measurement was conducted to search for states in $^{34}$Ar and determine their quantum properties. In particular, natural-parity states with large $\alpha$-decay partial widths should dominate the stellar reaction rate. Method: We performed the first measurement of $^{30}$S+$\alpha$ resonant elastic scattering up to a center-of-mass energy of 5.5 MeV using a radioactive ion beam. The experiment utilized a thick gaseous active target system and silicon detector array in inverse kinematics. Results: We obtained an excitation function for $^{30}$S($\alpha$,$\alpha$) near $150^{\circ}$ in the center-of-mass frame. The experimental data were analyzed with an $R$-Matrix calculation, and we observed three new resonant patterns between 11.1 and 12.1 MeV, extracting their properties of resonance energy, widths, spin, and parity. Conclusions: We calculated the resonant thermonuclear reaction rate of $^{30}$S($\alpha$,p) based on all available experimental data of $^{34}$Ar and found an upper limit about one order of magnitude larger than a rate determined using a statistical model. The astrophysical impact of these two rates has been investigated through one-zone postprocessing type I x-ray burst calculations. We find that our new upper limit for the $^{30}$S($\alpha$,p)$^{33}$Cl rate significantly affects the predicted nuclear energy generation rate during the burst., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures

The $^{11}$C($\alpha$, p) reaction is an important $\alpha$-induced reaction competing with $\beta$-limited hydrogen-burning processes in high-temperature explosive stars. We directly measured its reaction cross sections both for the ground-state transition ($\alpha$, $p_{0}$) and the excited-state transitions ($\alpha$, $p_{1}$) and ($\alpha$, $p_{2}$) at relevant stellar energies 1.3 - 4.5 MeV by an extended thick-target method featuring time of flight for the first time. We revised the reaction rate by numerical integration including the ($\alpha$, $p_{1}$) and ($\alpha$, $p_{2}$) contributions and also low-lying resonances of ($\alpha$, $p_{0}$) using both the present and the previous experimental data which were totally neglected in the previous compilation works. The present total reaction rate lies between the previous ($\alpha$, $p_{0}$) rate and the total rate of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculation, which is consistent with the relevant explosive hydrogen-burning scenarios such as the $\nu p$-process., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, final version as submitted to Physical Review C for publication after peer-review

We investigate the possibilities of producing neutron-rich nuclides in projectile fission of heavy beams in the energy range of 20 MeV/nucleon expected from low-energy facilities. We report our efforts to theoretically describe the reaction mechanism of projectile fission following a multinucleon transfer collision at this energy range. Our calculations are mainly based on a two-step approach: the dynamical stage of the collision is described with either the phenomenological Deep-Inelastic Transfer model (DIT), or with the microscopic Constrained Molecular Dynamics model (CoMD). The deexcitation/fission of the hot heavy projectile fragments is performed with the Statistical Mul- tifragmentation Model (SMM). We compared our model calculations with our previous experimental projectile-fission data of 238U (20 MeV/nucleon)+208Pb and 197Au (20 MeV/nucleon)+197Au and found an overall reasonable agreement. Our study suggests that projectile fission following periph- eral heavy-ion collisions at this energy range offers an effective route to access very neutron-rich rare isotopes toward and beyond the astrophysical r-process path.

We study for the first time the internal structure of 140Te through the beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy of 140Sb. The very neutron-rich 140Sb, Z = 51 and N = 89, ions were produced by the in-flight fission of 238U beam on a 9Be target at 345 MeV per nucleon at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory, RIKEN. The half-life and spin-parity of 140Sb are reported as 124(30) ms and (4-), respectively. In addition to the excited states of 140Te produced by the beta-decay branch, the beta-delayed one-neutron and two-neutron emission branches were also established. By identifying the first 2+ and 4+ excited states of 140Te, we found that Te isotopes persist their vibrator character with E(4+)/E(2+) = 2. We discuss the distinctive features manifest in this region, such as valence neutron symmetry and asymmetry, revealed in pairs of isotopes with the same neutron holes and particles with respect to N = 82., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, EURICA campaign

The resonance structure in $^{11}$C is particularly of interest with regard to the astrophysical $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $\gamma$) reaction, relevant at high temperature, and to the $\alpha$-cluster structure in $^{11}$C. The measurement was to determine unknown resonance parameters for the high excited states of $^{11}$C. In particular, the $\alpha$ decay width can be useful information to discuss $\alpha$ cluster structure in $^{11}$C. New measurements of the $^{7}$Be+$\alpha$ resonant scattering and the $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $p$)$^{10}$B reaction in inverse kinematics were performed for center-of-mass energy up to 5.5 MeV, and the resonances at excitation energies of 8.9--12.7 MeV in the compound $^{11}$C nucleus were studied. Inelastic scattering of $^{7}$Be+$\alpha$ and the $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $p_1$)$^{10}$B$^*$ reaction were also studied with a simultaneous $\gamma$-ray measurement. The measurements were performed at the low-energy RI beam facility CRIB (CNS Radioactive Ion Beam separator) of the Center for Nuclear Study (CNS), the University of Tokyo. We obtained excitation functions of $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $\alpha_0$)$^{7}$Be (elastic scattering), $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $\alpha_1$)$^{7}$Be$^*$ (inelastic scattering), $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $p_0$)$^{10}$B, and $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $p_1$)$^{10}$B$^*$. Many resonances including a new one were observed and their parameters were determined by an R-matrix analysis. The resonances we observed possibly enhance the $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $\gamma$) reaction rate but in a smaller magnitude than the lower-lying resonances. A new negative-parity cluster band, similar to the one previously suggested in the mirror nucleus $^{11}$B, is proposed.

A new measurement of proton resonance scattering on 7Be was performed up to the center-of-mass energy of 6.7 MeV using the low-energy RI beam facility CRIB (CNS Radioactive Ion Beam separator) at the Center for Nuclear Study of the University of Tokyo. The excitation function of 7Be+p elastic scattering above 3.5 MeV was measured successfully for the first time, providing important information about the resonance structure of the 8B nucleus. The resonances are related to the reaction rate of 7Be(p, gamma)8B, which is the key reaction in solar 8B neutrino production. Evidence for the presence of two negative parity states is presented. One of them is a 2- state observed as a broad s-wave resonance, the existence of which had been questionable. Its possible effects on the determination of the astrophysical S-factor of 7Be(p, gamma)8B at solar energy are discussed. The other state had not been observed in previous measurements, and its spin and parity were determined as 1-., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report the successful fabrication of single-filament composite MgB2/SUS ribbons, as an ultra-robust conductor type, employing the powder-in-tube (PIT) process, by swaging and cold rolling only. The remarkable transport critical current (Ic) of the non-sintered MgB2/SUS ribbon has observed, as an unexpected result. Transport critical currents Ic ~ 316 A at T = 4.2 K and Ic ~ 82 A at T = 20 K were observed at self-field, for the non-sintered composite MgB2/SUS ribbon. In addition, the persistent current density Jp values, that were estimated by Bean formula, were more than ~ 7  105 A/cm2 at T = 5 K, and ~ 1.2  105 A/cm2 at T = 30 K, for the sintered composite MgB2/SUS ribbon, at H = 0 G., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Using a scattering technique based on a parametrized linear combination of atomic orbitals Hamiltonian, we calculate the ballistic quantum conductance of multi-wall carbon nanotubes. We find that inter-wall interactions not only block some of the quantum conductance channels, but also redistribute the current non-uniformly over the individual tubes across the structure. Our results provide a natural explanation for the unexpected integer and non-integer conductance values reported for multi-wall nanotubes in Ref.[S. Frank, P. Poncharal, Z.L. Wang, and W.
