Abstract

The industrial sector has undergone significant digital transformation, driven by advancements in technology and the Internet of Things (IoT). These developments have facilitated the collection of vast quantities of data, which, in turn, pose significant challenges for real-time data processing. This study seeks to validate the efficacy and accuracy of edge computing models designed to represent subprocesses within industrial environments and to compare their performance with that of traditional cloud computing models. By processing data locally at the point of collection, edge computing models provide substantial benefits in minimizing latency and enhancing processing efficiency, which are crucial for real-time decision-making in industrial operations. This research demonstrates that models derived from distinct subprocesses yield superior accuracy compared to comprehensive models encompassing multiple subprocesses. The findings indicate that an increase in data volume does not necessarily translate to improved model performance, particularly in datasets that capture data from production processes, as combining independent process data can introduce extraneous 'noise'. By subdividing datasets into smaller, specialized edge models, this study offers a viable approach to mitigating the latency challenges inherent in cloud computing, thereby enhancing real-time data processing capabilities, scalability, and adaptability for modern industrial applications. Abstract

The following thesis is divided in two main topics. The first part studies variations of optimal prediction problems introduced in Shiryaev, Zhou and Xu (2008) and Du Toit and Peskir (2009) to a randomized terminal-time set up and different families of utility measures. The work presents optimal stopping rules that apply under different criteria, introduces a numerical technique to build approximations of stopping boundaries for fixed terminal time problems and suggest previously reported stopping rules extend to certain generalizations of measures. The second part of the thesis is concerned with analysing optimal wealth allocation techniques within a defaultable financial market similar to Bielecki and Jang (2007). It studies a portfolio optimization problem combining a continuous time jump market and a defaultable security; and presents numerical solutions through the conversion into a Markov Decision Process and characterization of its value function as a unique fixed point to a contracting operator. Abstract

The global impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has underscored the need for a deeper understanding of viral evolution to anticipate new viruses or variants. Genetic recombination is a fundamental mechanism in viral evolution, yet it remains poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive research on the genetic regions associated with genetic recombination features in SARS-CoV-2. With this aim, we implemented a two-phase transfer learning approach using genomic spectrograms of complete SARS-CoV-2 sequences. In the first phase, we utilized a pre-trained VGG-16 model with genomic spectrograms of HIV-1, and in the second phase, we applied HIV-1 VGG-16 model to SARS-CoV-2 spectrograms. The identification of key recombination hot zones was achieved using the Grad-CAM interpretability tool, and the results were analyzed by mathematical and image processing techniques. Our findings unequivocally identify the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein (S protein) as the pivotal region in the genetic recombination feature. For non-recombinant sequences, the relevant frequencies clustered around 1/6 and 1/12. In recombinant sequences, the sharp prominence of the main hot zone in the Spike protein prominently indicated a frequency of 1/6. These findings suggest that in the arithmetic series, every 6 nucleotides (two triplets) in S may encode crucial information, potentially concealing essential details about viral characteristics, in this case, recombinant feature of a SARS-CoV-2 genetic sequence. This insight further underscores the potential presence of multifaceted information within the genome, including mathematical signatures that define an organism's unique attributes. Abstract

Athletes' anthropometry, and especially their body composition, plays an important role in sport performance in general and in Trainera rowing in particular. Rowers' anthropometric and performance profiles may vary according to their position in the boat. The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship between anthropometry, physical performance, physiological variables, and elite male rowers' boat positions. Twenty elite male traditional rowers were assessed and categorized according to their boat position: either in the middle of the boat (M) (n = 9) or in the bow and stern positions (BS) (n = 11). Anthropometric measurements and body composition were obtained for each rower, and physical performance was measured by a 45-s supramaximal rowing test and a VO2max incremental test on a Concept II rowing ergometer. The results showed that the rowers in the middle were taller (186.6 ± 4.9 cm), and significant differences were also found between the two groups according to body mass (BS 72.3 ± 3.8 vs. M 85.4 ± 4.3) and peak power (BS 641.5 ± 84 vs. M 737 ± 47.1), mean power (BS 538.5 ± 48.4 vs. M 604.1 ± 42.3), and physiological parameters (p < 0.05), VO2max (BS 66.5 ± 4.9 vs. M 59.3 ± 6.7). It can be concluded that height could be associated with elite rowers' performance and that a lower body mass index is related to better performance in bow and stern positions. 243 p., Los G-quadruplex han suscitado un gran interés en los últimos años para desarrollar terapias contra el cáncer. Estas estructuras de ADN pueden encontrarse en los telómeros y/o promotores de oncogenes, y se ha observado que la estabilización de tales G-quadruplexos puede alterar el crecimiento de células tumorales. Sin embargo, los mecanismos que conducen a la formación y estabilización de estos G-quadruplexos aún no están bien establecidos y son el foco de muchos trabajos actuales en este campo. En esta tesis se ha estudiado la interacción de dos isómeros, ecuatorial y axial, del complejo metálico [Mo(¿3-C3H5)Br(CO)2(phen)] con diferentes estructuras de ADN, prestando especial interés en el ADN G-quadruplexo, mediante métodos computacionales para conocer su citotoxicidad ya encontrada previamente mediante métodos experimentales. Entre todos los métodos utilizados, la Teoría del Funcional de la Densidad de Escalamiento Lineal (LS-DFT) tiene una especial relevancia a lo largo de este trabajo, pero también se han realizado cálculos con métodos como el semi-empírico, el DLPNO-CCSD(T), y el QM/MM, complementados con EDA, así como el uso de herramientas computacionalespara el análisis de enlaces débiles, QTAIM y NCI. Las energías de formación calculadas, el análisis de descomposición de energía, las energías de solvatación y el análisis de interacciones no covalentes explican la afinidad y la selectividad del complejo metálico por el ADN G-quadruplexo sobre el ADN de doble hélice. También se ha observado que, entre los dos isómeros complejos metálicos estudiados, el complejo Axial es favorable para la interacción con el ADN G-quadruplexo debido a la disposición que adopta el complejo, completamente insertado en la cavidad de la estructura del G-quadruplexo, dispuesto entre tétradas, favoreciendo la creación de interacciones débiles estabilizadoras.
