Discontinuous reception (DRX) is a key technology for reducing the energy consumption of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices. Specifically, DRX allows the devices to operate in a low-power mode when no data reception is scheduled, and its effectiveness depends on the proper configuration of the DRX parameters. In this paper, we characterize the DRX process departing from a semi-Markov chain modeling. We detail two ways to set DRX parameters to minimize the device power consumption while meeting a mean delay constraint. The first method exhaustively searches for the optimal configuration. In contrast, the second method uses a low-complexity metaheuristic to find a sub-optimal configuration, thus considering ideal and practical DRX configurations. Notably, within the DRX parameters, the inactivity timer (IT) is a caution time that specifies how long a device remains active after the last information exchange. Traditionally, a device implementing DRX will restart the IT after each data reception as a precedent to a low-power mode. The usual approach lies in restarting the IT whenever new data is received during this cautious period, which might sometimes needlessly extend the active time. Herein, we propose a more efficient method in which the transmit base station (BS) explicitly indicates restarting the timer through the control channel only when appropriate. The decision is taken based on the BS's knowledge about its buffer status. We consider Poisson and bursty traffic models, which are typical in IIoT setups, and verify the suitability of our proposal for reducing the energy consumption of the devices without significantly compromising the communication latency through extensive numerical simulations. The Internet-of-Things (IoT) is rapidly expanding, connecting numerous devices and becoming integral to our daily lives. As this occurs, ensuring efficient traffic management becomes crucial. Effective IoT traffic management requires modeling and predicting intrincate machine-type communication (MTC) dynamics, for which machine-learning (ML) techniques are certainly appealing. However, obtaining comprehensive and high-quality datasets, along with accessible platforms for reproducing ML-based predictions, continues to impede the research progress. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by characterizing the Smart Campus MTC dataset provided by the University of Oulu. Specifically, we perform a comprehensive statistical analysis of the MTC traffic utilizing goodness-of-fit tests, including well-established tests such as Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Anderson-Darling, chi-squared, and root mean square error. The analysis centers on examining and evaluating three models that accurately represent the two most significant MTC traffic types: periodic updating and event-driven, which are also identified from the dataset. The results demonstrate that the models accurately characterize the traffic patterns. Accurate orientation estimation of an object in a scene is critical in robotics, aerospace, augmented reality, and medicine, as it supports scene understanding. This paper introduces a novel orientation estimation approach leveraging radio frequency (RF) sensing technology and leaky-wave antennas (LWAs). Specifically, we propose a framework for a radar system to estimate the orientation of a \textit{dumb} LWA-equipped backscattering tag, marking the first exploration of this method in the literature. Our contributions include a comprehensive framework for signal modeling and orientation estimation with multi-subcarrier transmissions, and the formulation of a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE). Moreover, we analyze the impact of imperfect tag location information, revealing that it minimally affects estimation accuracy. Exploiting related results, we propose an approximate MLE and introduce a low-complexity radiation-pointing angle-based estimator with near-optimal performance. We derive the feasible orientation estimation region of the latter and show that it depends mainly on the system bandwidth. Our analytical results are validated through Monte Carlo simulations and reveal that the low-complexity estimator achieves near-optimal accuracy and that its feasible orientation estimation region is also approximately shared by the other estimators. Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications involve real-time monitoring, detection, and data analysis. This is challenged by the intermittent activity of IIoT devices (IIoTDs) and their limited battery capacity. Indeed, the former issue makes resource scheduling and random access difficult, while the latter constrains IIoTDs' lifetime and efficient operation. In this paper, we address interconnected aspects of these issues. Specifically, we focus on extending the battery life of IIoTDs sensing events/alarms by minimizing the number of unnecessary transmissions. Note that when multiple devices access the channel simultaneously, there are collisions, potentially leading to retransmissions, thus reducing energy efficiency. We propose a threshold-based transmission-decision policy based on the sensing quality and the network spatial deployment. We optimize the transmission thresholds using several approaches such as successive convex approximation, block coordinate descent methods, Voronoi diagrams, explainable machine learning, and algorithms based on natural selection and social behavior. Besides, we propose a new approach that reformulates the optimization problem as a $Q$-learning solution to promote adaptability to system dynamics. Through numerical evaluation, we demonstrate significant performance enhancements in complex IIoT environments, thus validating the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed solutions. We show that Q-learning performs the best, while the block coordinate descending method incurs the worst performance. Additionally, we compare the proposed methods with a benchmark assigning the same threshold to all the devices for transmission decision. Compared to the benchmark, up to 94\% and 60\% reduction in power consumption are achieved in low-density and high-density scenarios, respectively.

This paper presents an approach for energy-neutral Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios where the IoT devices (IoTDs) rely entirely on their energy harvesting capabilities to sustain operation. We use a Markov chain to represent the operation and transmission states of the IoTDs, a modulated Poisson process to model their energy harvesting process, and a discrete-time Markov chain to model their battery state. The aim is to efficiently manage the duty cycling of the IoTDs, so as to prolong their battery life and reduce instances of low-energy availability. We propose a duty-cycling management based on K- nearest neighbors, aiming to strike a trade-off between energy efficiency and detection accuracy. This is done by incorporating spatial and temporal correlations among IoTDs' activity, as well as their energy harvesting capabilities. We also allow the base station to wake up specific IoTDs if more information about an event is needed upon initial detection. Our proposed scheme shows significant improvements in energy savings and performance, with up to 11 times lower misdetection probability and 50\% lower energy consumption for high-density scenarios compared to a random duty cycling benchmark.

Radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) is a key technology for future low-power wireless systems. However, the inherently low end-to-end power transfer efficiency (PTE) is challenging for practical applications. The main factors contributing to it are the channel losses, transceivers' power consumption, and losses related, e.g., to the digital-to-analog converter (DAC), high-power amplifier, and rectenna. Optimizing PTE requires careful consideration of these factors, motivating the current work. Herein, we consider an analog multi-antenna power transmitter that aims to charge a single energy harvester. We first provide a mathematical framework to calculate the harvested power from multi-tone signal transmissions and the system power consumption. Then, we formulate the joint waveform and analog beamforming design problem to minimize power consumption and meet the charging requirements. Finally, we propose an optimization approach relying on swarm intelligence to solve the specified problem. Radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising technology for sustainable support of massive Internet of Things (IoT). However, RF-WPT systems are characterized by low efficiency due to channel attenuation, which can be mitigated by precoders that adjust the transmission directivity. This work considers a multi-antenna RF-WPT system with multiple non-linear energy harvesting (EH) nodes with energy demands changing over discrete time slots. This leads to the charging scheduling problem, which involves choosing the precoders at each slot to minimize the total energy consumption and meet the EH requirements. We model the problem as a Markov decision process and propose a solution relying on a low-complexity beamforming and deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG). The results show that the proposed beamforming achieves near-optimal performance with low computational complexity, and the DDPG-based approach converges with the number of episodes and reduces the system's power consumption, while the outage probability and the power consumption increase with the number of devices., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Efficient and reliable energy systems are key to progress of society. High performance batteries are essential for widely used technologies like Electric Vehicles (EVs) and portable electronics. Additionally, an effective Battery Management System (BMS) is crucial to oversee vital parameters of battery. However, BMS can experience cell imbalance due to charging/discharging dynamics, which reduce battery capacity, lifespan, and efficiency, and raise critical safety concerns. This calls for effective cell-balancing techniques. Notably, the existing literature on cell balancing is limited, urgently necessitating a thorough survey to pinpoint key research gaps and suggest prompt solutions. In this article, cell balancing and corresponding techniques are reviewed. Initially, we detail comparison of passive cell balancing techniques and assess their respective advantages, drawbacks, and practical applications. Then, we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of active cell balancing methods and applicability of cell balancing for both, series and parallel-connected cells. Additionally, we examine the need for cell balancing in commonly used batteries, and applications in EVs. Lastly, we present detailed prospects which include challenges and directions for future research.

This paper introduces a sophisticated and adaptable framework combining extreme value theory with radio maps to spatially model extreme channel conditions accurately. Utilising existing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurements and leveraging Gaussian processes, our approach predicts the tail of the SNR distribution, which entails estimating the parameters of a generalised Pareto distribution, at unobserved locations. This innovative method offers a versatile solution adaptable to various resource allocation challenges in ultra-reliable low-latency communications. We evaluate the performance of this method in a rate maximisation problem with defined outage constraints and compare it with a benchmark in the literature. We propose a first-principles theoretical approach for the description of the aging of the linear viscoelastic properties of a colloidal liquid after a sudden quench into a dynamically arrested (glass or gel) state. Specifically, we couple a general expression for the time-evolving shear-stress relaxation function $\eta(\tau;t)$ (whose $\tau$-integral is the instantaneous viscosity $\eta(t)$), written in terms of the non-equilibrium structure factor $S(k;t)$ and intermediate scattering function $F(k,\tau;t)$, with the equations that determine $S(k;t)$ and $F(k,\tau;t)$, provided by the non-equilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (NE-SCGLE) theory. In this manner, we obtain a closed theoretical scheme that directly connects inter-particle forces with experimentally accessible rheological properties of non-equilibrium amorphous states of matter. The predictive capability of the resulting theoretical formalism is illustrated here with its concrete application to the Weeks-Chandler-Andersen (WCA) model of a soft-sphere fluid.

Internet of Things (IoT) sustainability may hinge on radio frequency wireless energy transfer (RF-WET). However, energy-efficient charging strategies are still needed, motivating our work. Specifically, this letter proposes a time division scheme to efficiently charge low-power devices in an IoT network. For this, a multi-antenna power beacon (PB) drives the devices' energy harvesting circuit to the highest power conversion efficiency point via energy beamforming, thus achieving minimum energy consumption. Herein, we adopt the analog multi-antenna architecture due to its low complexity, cost, and energy consumption. The proposal includes a simple yet accurate model for the transfer characteristic of the energy harvesting circuit, enabling the optimization framework. The results evince the effectiveness of our RF-WET strategy over a benchmark scheme where the PB charges all the IoT devices simultaneously. One of the primary goals of future wireless systems is to foster sustainability, for which, radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) is considered a key technology enabler. The key challenge of RF-WPT systems is the extremely low end-to-end efficiency, mainly due to the losses introduced by the wireless channel. Distributed antenna systems are undoubtedly appealing as they can significantly shorten the charging distances, thus, reducing channel losses. Interestingly, radio stripe systems provide a cost-efficient and scalable way to deploy a distributed multi-antenna system, and thus have received a lot of attention recently. Herein, we consider an RF-WPT system with a transmit radio stripe network to charge multiple indoor energy hotspots, i.e., spatial regions where the energy harvesting devices are expected to be located, including near-field locations. We formulate the optimal radio stripe deployment problem aimed to maximize the minimum power received by the users and explore two specific predefined shapes, namely the straight line and polygon-shaped configurations. Then, we provide efficient solutions relying on geometric programming to optimize the location of the radio stripe elements. The results demonstrate that the proposed radio stripe deployments outperform a central fully-digital square array with the same number of elements and utilizing larger radio stripe lengths can enhance the performance, while increasing the system frequency may degrade it., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The wired charging and the need for battery replacements are critical barriers to unlimited, scalable, and sustainable mobile connectivity, motivating the interest in radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) technology. However, the inherently low end-to-end power transfer efficiency (PTE) and health/safety-related apprehensions about the technology are critical obstacles. Indeed, RF-WPT implementation and operation require efficient and cautious strategies and protocols, especially when targeting high-power charging, which constitutes the scope of this work. Herein, we overview the main factors affecting the end-to-end PTE of RF-WPT systems and their multiplicative effect and interdependencies. Moreover, we discuss key electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure metrics, safety limits, and approaches for efficient and EMF-aware deployment and operation. Quantitatively, we show that near-field RF charging may significantly reduce EMF exposure, and thus must be promoted. We also present our vision of a cyber-physical system for efficient and safe wireless charging, specify key components and their interrelation, and illustrate numerically the PTE attained by two modern low-power multi-antenna architectures in a simple setup. Throughout the paper, we highlight the need for high end-to-end PTE architectures and charging protocols transparently complying with EMF exposure regulations and outline relevant challenges and research directions. Distributed learning on edge devices has attracted increased attention with the advent of federated learning (FL). Notably, edge devices often have limited battery and heterogeneous energy availability, while multiple rounds are required in FL for convergence, intensifying the need for energy efficiency. Energy depletion may hinder the training process and the efficient utilization of the trained model. To solve these problems, this letter considers the integration of energy harvesting (EH) devices into a FL network with multi-channel ALOHA, while proposing a method to ensure both low energy outage probability and successful execution of future tasks. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, particularly in critical setups where the average energy income fails to cover the iteration cost. The method outperforms a norm based solution in terms of convergence time and battery level.

Channel state information (CSI) is crucial for achieving ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) in wireless networks. The main associated problems are the CSI acquisition time, which impacts the delay requirements of time-critical applications, and the estimation accuracy, which degrades the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), thus, reducing reliability. In this work, we formulate and solve a minimum-power precoding design problem simultaneously serving multiple URLLC users in the downlink with imperfect CSI availability. Specifically, we develop an algorithm that exploits state-of-the-art precoding schemes such as the maximal ratio transmission (MRT) and zero-forcing (ZF), and adjust the power of the precoders to compensate for the channel estimation error uncertainty based on the extreme value theory (EVT) framework. Radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising technology for charging the Internet of Things. Practical RF-WPT systems usually require energy beamforming (EB), which can compensate for the severe propagation loss by directing beams toward the devices. The EB flexibility depends on the transmitter architecture, existing a trade-off between cost/complexity and degrees of freedom. Thus, simpler architectures such as dynamic metasurface antennas (DMAs) are gaining attention. Herein, we consider an RF-WPT system with a transmit DMA for meeting the energy harvesting requirements of multiple devices and formulate an optimization problem for the minimum-power design. First, we provide a mathematical model to capture the frequency-dependant signal propagation effect in the DMA architecture. Next, we propose a solution based on semi-definite programming and alternating optimization. Radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising technology for future wireless systems. However, the low power transfer efficiency (PTE) is a critical challenge for practical implementations. One of the main inefficiency sources is the power consumption and loss introduced by key components such as high-power amplifier (HPA) and rectenna, thus they must be carefully considered for PTE optimization. Herein, we consider a near-field RF-WPT system with the emerging dynamic metasurface antenna (DMA) at the transmitter and non-linear energy harvesters. We provide a mathematical framework to calculate the power consumption and harvested power from multi-tone signal transmissions. Then, we propose an approach relying on alternating optimization and successive convex approximation for waveform optimization and beam focusing to minimize power consumption while meeting energy harvesting requirements. Numerical results show that increasing the transmit tones reduces the power consumption by leveraging the rectifier's non-linearity. Moreover, it is demonstrated that increasing the antenna length improves the performance, while both DMA and fully-digital architectures may be favorable depending on the setup. Reliable energy supply remains a crucial challenge in the Internet of Things (IoT). Although relying on batteries is cost-effective for a few devices, it is neither a scalable nor a sustainable charging solution as the network grows massive. Besides, current energy-saving technologies alone cannot cope, for instance, with the vision of zero-energy devices and the deploy-and-forget paradigm which can unlock a myriad of new use cases. In this context, sustainable radio frequency wireless energy transfer emerges as an attractive solution for efficiently charging the next generation of ultra low power IoT devices. Herein, we highlight that sustainable charging is broader than conventional green charging, as it focuses on balancing economy prosperity and social equity in addition to environmental health. We discuss the economic implications of powering energy transmitters with ambient energy sources, and reveal insights on their optimal deployment. Moreover, we overview different methods for modeling the energy arrival process of ambient energy sources and discuss their application in different use cases. We highlight the potential of integrating sustainable WET with energy harvesting from nearby transmitters and discuss enhancements in energy receiver design. We also illustrate the role of different technologies in enabling sustainable WET and exemplify various use cases. Prolonging the lifetime of massive machine-type communication (MTC) networks is key to realizing a sustainable digitized society. Great energy savings can be achieved by accurately predicting MTC traffic followed by properly designed resource allocation mechanisms. However, selecting the proper MTC traffic predictor is not straightforward and depends on accuracy/complexity trade-offs and the specific MTC applications and network characteristics. Remarkably, the related state-of-the-art literature still lacks such debates. Herein, we assess the performance of several machine learning (ML) methods to predict Poisson and quasi-periodic MTC traffic in terms of accuracy and computational cost. Results show that the temporal convolutional network (TCN) outperforms the long-short term memory (LSTM), the gated recurrent units (GRU), and the recurrent neural network (RNN), in that order. For Poisson traffic, the accuracy gap between the predictors is larger than under quasi-periodic traffic. In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine learning (ML) have gained significant interest from both, industry and academia. Notably, conventional ML techniques require enormous amounts of power to meet the desired accuracy, which has limited their use mainly to high-capability devices such as network nodes. However, with many advancements in technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing, it is desirable to incorporate ML techniques into resource-constrained embedded devices for distributed and ubiquitous intelligence. This has motivated the emergence of the TinyML paradigm which is an embedded ML technique that enables ML applications on multiple cheap, resource- and power-constrained devices. However, during this transition towards appropriate implementation of the TinyML technology, multiple challenges such as processing capacity optimization, improved reliability, and maintenance of learning models' accuracy require timely solutions. In this article, various avenues available for TinyML implementation are reviewed. Firstly, a background of TinyML is provided, followed by detailed discussions on various tools supporting TinyML. Modern demands of the statistics profession call for reimagining statistics training. The discipline needs to attract and develop students who are effective as real-world problem solvers, interdisciplinary collaborators, communicators, leaders, and teachers. Demand for statistics professionals with broad technical and non-technical skills has grown in a variety of settings, but especially in business and industry. Academic curricula, though, remain primarily oriented around a narrow, technical conception of statistics. Advanced graduate-level training essentially is limited to research doctorate (PhD) programs which tend to prioritize theoretical and methodological research over development of effective applied statisticians. Other professions, such as those of physicians and surgeons, have training oriented around a professional doctorate, as opposed to a research doctorate. The linear combination of Student's $t$ random variables (RVs) appears in many statistical applications. Unfortunately, the Student's $t$ distribution is not closed under convolution, thus, deriving an exact and general distribution for the linear combination of $K$ Student's $t$ RVs is infeasible, which motivates a fitting/approximation approach. Here, we focus on the scenario where the only constraint is that the number of degrees of freedom of each $t-$RV is greater than two. Notice that since the odd moments/cumulants of the Student's $t$ distribution are zero, and the even moments/cumulants do not exist when their order is greater than the number of degrees of freedom, it becomes impossible to use conventional approaches based on moments/cumulants of order one or higher than two. To circumvent this issue, herein we propose fitting such a distribution to that of a scaled Student's $t$ RV by exploiting the second moment together with either the first absolute moment or the characteristic function (CF). For the fitting based on the absolute moment, we depart from the case of the linear combination of $K= 2$ Student's $t$ RVs and then generalize to $K\ge 2$ through a simple iterative procedure. Meanwhile, the CF-based fitting is direct, but its accuracy (measured in terms of the Bhattacharyya distance metric) depends on the CF parameter configuration, for which we propose a simple but accurate approach. Two of the main problems to achieve ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) are related to instantaneous channel state information (I-CSI) acquisition and the coexistence with other service modes such as enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB). The former comes from the non-negligible time required for accurate I-CSI acquisition, while the latter, from the heterogeneous and conflicting requirements of different nodes sharing the same network resources. In this paper, we leverage the I-CSI of multiple eMBB links and the channel measurement's history of a URLLC user for multi-antenna beamforming design. Specifically, we propose a precoding design that minimizes the transmit power of a base station (BS) providing eMBB and URLLC services with signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and outage constraints, respectively, by modifying existing I-CSI-based precoding schemes to account for URLLC channel history information. Moreover, we illustrate and validate the proposed method by adopting zero-forcing (ZF) and the transmit power minimization (TPM) precoding with SINR constraints. We show that the ZF implementation outperforms TPM in adverse channel conditions as in Rayleigh fading, while the situation is rapidly reversed as the channel experiences some line-of-sight (LOS). Finally, we determine the confidence levels at which the target outage probabilities are reached. For instance, we show that outage probabilities below $10^{-3}$ are achievable with more than 99$\%$ confidence for both precoding schemes under favorable LOS conditions with 16 transmit antennas and 500 samples of URLLC channel history., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. The increasing popularity of Internet of Everything and small-cell devices has enormously accelerated traffic loads. Consequently, increased bandwidth and high data rate requirements stimulate the operation at the millimeter wave and the Tera-Hertz spectrum bands in the fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) wireless networks. Furthermore, efficient spectrum allocation, maximizing the spectrum utilization, achieving efficient spectrum sharing (SS), and managing the spectrum to enhance the system performance remain challenging. To this end, recent studies have implemented artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques, enabling intelligent and efficient spectrum leveraging. However, despite many recent research advances focused on maximizing utilization of the spectrum bands, achieving efficient sharing, allocation, and management of the enormous available spectrum remains challenging. Therefore, the current article acquaints a comprehensive survey on intelligent SS methodologies for 5G and B5G wireless networks, considering the applications of artificial intelligence for efficient SS. Specifically, a thorough overview of SS methodologies is conferred, following which the various spectrum utilization opportunities arising from the existing SS methodologies in intelligent wireless networks are discussed. Subsequently, to highlight critical limitations of the existing methodologies, recent literature on existing SS methodologies is reviewed in detail, classifying them based on the implemented technology, i.e., cognitive radio, machine learning, blockchain, and multiple other techniques. Moreover, the related SS techniques are reviewed to highlight significant challenges in the B5G intelligent wireless network. Finally, to provide an insight into the prospective research avenues, the article is concluded by presenting several potential research directions and proposed solutions.

Reducing energy consumption is a pressing issue in low-power machine-type communication (MTC) networks. In this regard, the Wake-up Signal (WuS) technology, which aims to minimize the energy consumed by the radio interface of the machine-type devices (MTDs), stands as a promising solution. However, state-of-the-art WuS mechanisms use static operational parameters, so they cannot efficiently adapt to the system dynamics. To overcome this, we design a simple but efficient neural network to predict MTC traffic patterns and configure WuS accordingly. Our proposed forecasting WuS (FWuS) leverages an accurate long-short term memory (LSTM)- based traffic prediction that allows extending the sleep time of MTDs by avoiding frequent page monitoring occasions in idle state. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our approach. The traffic prediction errors are shown to be below 4%, being false alarm and miss-detection probabilities respectively below 8.8% and 1.3%. In terms of energy consumption reduction, FWuS can outperform the best benchmark mechanism in up to 32%. Finally, we certify the ability of FWuS to dynamically adapt to traffic density changes, promoting low-power MTC scalability

The provision of accurate localization is an increasingly important feature of wireless networks. To this end, a reliable distinction between line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) radio links is necessary to avoid degenerative localization estimation biases. Interestingly, LOS and NLOS transmissions affect the polarization of the received signals differently. In this work, we leverage this phenomenon to propose a threshold-based LOS/NLOS classifier exploiting weighted differential carrier phase measurements over a single link with different polarization configurations. Operation in either full or limited polarization diversity systems is possible. We develop a framework for assessing the performance of the proposed classifier, and show through simulations the performance impact of the reflecting materials in NLOS scenarios. For instance, the classifier is far more efficient in NLOS scenarios with wooden reflectors than in those with metallic reflectors. Numerical results evince the potential performance gains from exploiting full polarization diversity, properly weighting the differential carrier phase measurements, and using multi-carrier/tone transmissions. Finally, we show that the optimum decision threshold is inversely proportional to the path power gain in dB, while it does not depend significantly on the material of potential NLOS reflectors., Comment: accepted at IEEE TCOM

Grant-free protocols exploiting compressed sensing (CS) multi-user detection (MUD) are appealing for solving the random access problem in massive machine-type communications (mMTC) with sporadic device activity. Such protocols would greatly benefit from a prior deterministic knowledge of the sparsity level, i.e., instantaneous number of simultaneously active devices $K$. Aiming at this, herein we introduce a framework relying on coordinated pilot transmissions (CPT) over a short phase at the beginning of the transmission block for detecting $K$ in mMTC scenarios under Rayleigh fading. CPT can be implemented either as: i) U-CPT, which exploits only uplink transmissions, or A-CPT, which includes also downlink transmissions for channel state information (CSI) acquisition that resolve fading uncertainty. We discuss two specific implementations of A-CPT: ii) A-CPT-F, which implements CSI-based phase corrections while leveraging the same statistical inverse power control used by U-CPT, and iii) A-CPT-D, which implements a dynamic CSI-based inverse power control, although it requires some active devices to remain in silence if their corresponding channels are too faded. We derive a signal sparsity level detector for each CPT mechanism by relaxing the original integer detection/classification problem to an estimation problem in the continuous real domain followed by a rounding operation. We show that the variance of the relaxed estimator increases with $K^2$ and $K$ when operating with U-CPT and A-CPT mechanisms, respectively. The distribution of the estimators under U-CPT, A-CPT-F and A-CPT-D is found to follow an exponential, Gaussian, and Student's $t-$like distribution, respectively. Analyses evince the superiority of A-CPT-D, which is also corroborated via numerical results. The use of simple, fast and economic experimental tools to characterize low-dimensional materials is an important step in the process of democratizing the use of such materials in laboratories around the world. Raman spectroscopy has arisen as a way of indirectly determining the thickness of nanolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), avoiding the use of more expensive tools such as atomic force microscopy, and it is therefore a widely used technique in the study of semiconducting TMDs. However, the study of many metallic TMDs in the limit of few atomic layers is still behind when compared to their semiconducting counterparts, partly due to the lack of similar alternative characterization studies. In this work we present the characterization of the Raman spectrum, specifically of the E$^1_{2g}$- and A$_{1g}$-modes, of mechanically exfoliated crystals of Ta$_{1-x}$Mo$_x$S$_2$, a metallic TMD which exhibits charge density wave formation and superconductivity. The clear identification of contributions to the Raman spectrum coming from the SiO$_2$/Si substrate, which overlap with the peaks coming from the sample, and which dominate in intensity in the few-layer-samples limit, allowed the isolation of the individual E$^1_{2g}$- and A$_{1g}$-modes of the samples and, for the first time, the observation of a clear evolution of the Raman shifts of both modes as a function of sample thickness. The evolution of such peaks qualitatively resembles the evolution seen in other TMDs, and provide a way of indirectly determining sample thickness in the limit of few atomic layers at a low cost. In addition, we observe a softening (red-shift) of both E$^1_{2g}$- and A$_{1g}$-modes with Mo-doping in the nanolayers, possibly related to the increased out-of-plane lattice parameter with respect to the pure compound., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Power splitting (PS) based simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is considered in a multi-user multiple-input-single-output broadcast scenario. Specifically, we focus on jointly configuring the transmit beamforming vectors and receive PS ratios to minimize the total transmit energy of the base station under the user-specific latency and energy harvesting (EH) requirements. The battery depletion phenomenon is avoided by preemptively incorporating information regarding the receivers' battery state and EH fluctuations into the resource allocation design. The resulting time-average sum-power minimization problem is temporally correlated, non-convex (including mutually coupled latency-battery queue dynamics), and in general intractable. We use the Lyapunov optimization framework and derive a dynamic control algorithm to transform the original problem into a sequence of deterministic and independent subproblems, which are then solved via two alternative approaches: i) semidefinite relaxation combined with fractional programming, and ii) successive convex approximation. Furthermore, we design a low-complexity closed-form iterative algorithm exploiting the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker optimality conditions for a specific scenario with delay bounded batteryless receivers. Numerical results provide insights on the robustness of the proposed design to realize an energy-efficient SWIPT system while ensuring latency and EH requirements in a time dynamic mobile access network., Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures

Self-energy recycling (sER), which allows transmit energy re-utilization, has emerged as a viable option for improving the energy efficiency (EE) in low-power Internet of Things networks. In this work, we investigate its benefits also in terms of reliability improvements and compare the performance of full-duplex (FD) and half-duplex (HD) schemes when using multi-antenna techniques in a communication system. We analyze the trade-offs when considering not only the energy spent on transmission but also the circuitry power consumption, thus making the analysis of much more practical interest. In addition to the well known spectral efficiency improvements, results show that FD also outperforms HD in terms of reliability. We show that sER introduces not only benefits in EE matters but also some modifications on how to achieve maximum reliability fairness between uplink and downlink transmissions, which is the main goal in this work. In order to achieve this objective, we propose the use of a dynamic FD scheme where the small base station (SBS) determines the optimal allocation of antennas for transmission and reception. The Internet of Things (IoT) comprises an increasing number of low-power and low-cost devices that autonomously interact with the surrounding environment. As a consequence of their popularity, future IoT deployments will be massive, which demands energy-efficient systems to extend their lifetime and improve the user experience. Radio frequency wireless energy transfer has the potential of powering massive IoT networks, thus eliminating the need for frequent battery replacement by using the so-called power beacons (PBs). In this paper, we provide a framework for minimizing the sum transmit power of the PBs using devices' positions information and their current battery state. Our strategy aims to reduce the PBs' power consumption and to mitigate the possible impact of the electromagnetic radiation on human health. We also present analytical insights for the case of very distant clusters and evaluate their applicability. Radio frequency wireless energy transfer (WET) is a promising solution for powering autonomous Internet of Things (IoT) deployments. In this work, we leverage energy beamforming for powering multiple user equipments (UEs) with stringent energy harvesting (EH) demands in an indoor distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output system. Based on semi-definite programming, successive convex approximation (SCA), and maximum ratio transmission (MRT) techniques, we derive optimal and sub-optimal precoders aimed at minimizing the radio stripes' transmit power while exploiting information of the power transfer efficiency of the EH circuits at the UEs. Moreover, we propose an analytical framework to assess and control the electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation exposure in the considered indoor scenario. Numerical results show that i) the EMF radiation exposure can be more easily controlled at higher frequencies at the cost of a higher transmit power consumption, ii) training is not a very critical factor for the considered indoor system, iii) MRT/SCA-based precoders are particularly appealing when serving a small number of UEs, thus, especially suitable for implementation in a time domain multiple access (TDMA) scheduling framework, and iv) TDMA is more efficient than spatial domain multiple access (SDMA) when serving a relatively small number of UEs. Wireless energy transfer (WET) is a promising solution to enable massive machine-type communications (mMTC) with low-complexity and low-powered wireless devices. Given the energy restrictions of the devices, instant channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is not expected to be available in practical WET-enabled mMTC. However, because it is common that the terminals appear spatially clustered, some degree of spatial correlation between their channels to the base station (BS) is expected to occur. The paper considers a massive antenna array at the BS for WET that only has access to i) the first and second order statistics of the Rician channel component of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel and also to ii) the line-of-sight MIMO component. The optimal precoding scheme that maximizes the total energy available to the single-antenna devices is derived considering a continuous alphabet for the precoders, permitting any modulated or deterministic waveform. This may lead to some devices in the clusters being assigned a low fraction of the total available power in the cluster, creating a rather uneven situation among them. Consequently, a fairness criterion is introduced, imposing a minimum amount of power allocated to the terminals. A piece-wise linear harvesting circuit is considered at the terminals, with both saturation and a minimum sensitivity, and a constrained version of the precoder is also proposed by solving a non-linear programming problem. A paramount benefit of the constrained precoder is the encompassment of fairness in the power allocation to the different clusters. Texture matrices are a way of mitigating the redundancy inherent in the description of flavor physics via Yukawa couplings by eliminating some entries in order to identify relevant parameters. A four-zero texture scheme has been used in the literature to successfully describe fermion masses and mixing. However, as we show in this work, improving experimental constraints require an update to this analysis. In this paper the implications of a 2-zero texture mass matrix is studied for quarks and leptons. We show that the introduction of a new parameter in each mass matrix allow us to reach good results with relative low cost in predictability. We report a numerical study using a hybridized nature-inspired/cellular automata search algorithm. We find that leptons and quarks can be described by the same 1-zero structure. We describe some scenarios where a simplified description can be achieved, including a narrow region in parameter space where the same values describe charged leptons and neutrinos, which is a stronger version of a previously proposed Universal Texture Constraint., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures

Radio frequency (RF) wireless energy transfer (WET) is a key technology that may allow seamlessly powering future massive low-energy Internet of Things (IoT) networks. To enable efficient massive WET, channel state information (CSI)-limited/free multi-antenna transmit schemes have been recently proposed in the literature. The idea is to reduce/null the energy costs to be paid by energy harvesting (EH) IoT nodes from participating in large-scale time/power-consuming CSI training, but still enable some transmit spatial gains. In this paper, we take another step forward by proposing a novel CSI-free rotary antenna beamforming (RAB) WET scheme that outperforms all state-of-the-art CSI-free schemes in a scenario where a power beacon (PB) equipped with a uniform linear array (ULA) powers a large set of surrounding EH IoT devices. RAB uses a properly designed CSI-free beamformer combined with a continuous or periodic rotation of the ULA at the PB to provide average EH gains that scale as $0.85\sqrt{M}$, where $M$ is the number of PB's antenna elements. Moreover, a rotation-specific power control mechanism was proposed to i) fairly optimize the WET process if devices' positioning information is available, and/or ii) to avoid hazards to human health in terms of specific absorption rate (SAR). We show that RAB performance even approaches quickly (or surpasses, for scenarios with sufficiently large number of EH devices, or when using the proposed power control) the performance of a traditional full-CSI based transmit scheme, and it is also less sensitive to SAR constraints. Finally, we discuss important practicalities related to RAB such as its robustness against non line-of-sight conditions compared to other CSI-free WET schemes, and its generalizability to scenarios where the PB uses other than a ULA topology., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. Data aggregation is an efficient approach to handle the congestion introduced by a massive number of machine type devices (MTDs). The aggregators not only collect data but also implement scheduling mechanisms to cope with scarce network resources. We use the concept of meta distribution (MD) of the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) to gain a complete understanding of the per-link reliability and describe the performance of two scheduling methods for data aggregation of machine type communication (MTC): random resource scheduling (RRS) and channel-aware resource scheduling (CRS). Wireless energy transfer (WET) is emerging as an enabling green technology for Internet of Things (IoT) networks. WET allows the IoT devices to wirelessly recharge their batteries with energy from external sources such as dedicated radio frequency transmitters called power beacons (PBs). In this paper, we investigate the optimal deployment of PBs that guarantees a network-wide energy outage constraint. Optimal positions for the PBs are determined by maximizing the average incident power for the worst location in the service area since no information about the sensor deployment is provided. Such network planning guarantees the fairest harvesting performance for all the IoT devices. Numerical simulations evidence that our proposed optimization framework improves the energy supply reliability compared to benchmark schemes. Additionally, we show that although both, the number of deployed PBs and the number of antennas per PB, introduce performance improvements, the former has a dominant role.
