3. Young male blackcaps with blood parasite coinfections cope with oxidative stress favouring anthocyanin‐rich food during migratory fattening.

Abstract

Parasites may alter host physiology, which may promote behavioural adaptations to counteract their effect. Adaptive feeding may help individuals to cope with infection, especially during physiologically demanding life stages. For instance, migrating birds need fuel for long‐distance flights and repair oxidative damage caused by intense aerobic exercise, and parasites may influence on how individuals balance these needs. Infected birds may face increased oxidative challenges, which could induce them to favour antioxidant defences over other needs, such as fattening. We tested whether migrating birds can adaptively choose food according to their needs, favouring dietary antioxidants to cope with oxidative stress caused by haemosporidian blood parasites during migration. During autumn migration, we mist‐netted young male Eurasian blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla stopping over in central Spain. We placed the birds in cages where they were offered fat and anthocyanin‐enriched food alternatives. We measured preference for each food offer. We tested their infections with haemosporidian parasites by PCR techniques and their parasitaemia by blood smear inspection. We also measured physiological variables that account for nutritional and oxidative status in red blood cells and plasma. We found that birds with multiple infections favoured anthocyanin‐enriched food controlling for an effect of body mass on food preference (lean blackcaps preferred anthocyanins, likely because they are urged to repair oxidative damage upon arrival on stopover with depleted energy reserves). Haemosporidian‐infected birds had a lower antioxidant capacity of plasma, although no effect of infections on oxidative damage was detected, and individuals with more oxidative damage preferred anthocyanin‐enriched food. Our results suggest that haemosporidian infections may increase individual antioxidant needs, which could affect migratory performance if the urge to find dietary antioxidants reduces the rate of fuel consumption. Abstract

[EN] Sexually and socially selected signals are predicated to express the present and past condition of individuals and thereby their capacity to cope with environmental challenges. The concentration of corticosterone in feathers (CORTf) has been validated as a marker of activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis in birds during feather development. Measurements of CORTf can thus express the physiological stress of migratory birds during non-breeding periods of the annual cycle when feathers moulted in the wintering range are analysed. Thus, negative trends of ornament expression with CORTf may be predicted. Unpigmented plumage patches may constitute signals of phenotypic quality and are used in many species in social interac-tions by both sexes. Pied Flycatchers of both sexes Ficedula hypoleuca show white forehead and wing patches during the breeding season, of which the forehead and part of the wing patch (tertials) are moulted on the wintering grounds before spring migration. These patches are used as signals in social and sexual interactions and their expression has been previ-ously related to several indicators of physiological status. We collected tertials of females during nestling provisioning in a Spanish population and determined their CORTf in the laboratory. CORTf was thus measured in some of the prenuptially moulted feathers used as signals of social dominance by breeding females. According to AICc model selection, CORTf turned up in all the best models explaining forehead patch size and in most best models for wing patch size when controlling for age and size. Both forehead and wing patch sizes were negatively related to CORTf, although the trend for wing patch size was not significant. This indicates that breeding females expressing large unpigmented patches experienced low levels of stress during the prenuptial moult in their winter quarters, or that strongly signalling individuals present a lower level of activation of the HPA axis., [AL] Soziale und für das jeweilige Geschlecht selektierte Signale sollen die gegenwärtige und vorangegangene Verfassung von Individuen anzeigen und damit ihre Fähigkeit, mit den Herausforderungen der Umwelt fertigzuwerden. Die Konzentration von Kortikosteron in den Federn (CORTf) wurde bei Vögeln während der Federentwicklung als Marker für die Aktivierung der Hypothalamus-Hypophysen-Achse validiert. Messungen des CORTf können daher den physiologischen Stress von Zugvögeln im Jahreszyklus außerhalb der Brutzeiten ausdrücken, wenn man im Überwinterungsgebiet bei der Mauser aus-gefallene Federn analysiert. Somit können möglicherweise negative Trends im gesamten Federkleid vorhergesagt werden. Unpigmentierte Stellen im Gefieder können Signale der phänotypischen Qualität darstellen und werden bei vielen Arten in sozialen Interaktionen von beiden Geschlechtern verwendet. Trauerschnäpper (Fidecula hypoleuca) beider Geschlechter zeigen während der Brutzeit weiße Stirn- und Flügelflecken; die Federn an Stirn und Teilen der Flügel mausern im Win-terquartier vor Beginn des Frühjahrszuges. Die Flecken werden in sozialen Interaktionen und zwischen den Geschlechtern als Signal eingesetzt, und ihr Ausprägungsgrad wurde bislang mit mehreren Indikatoren für die physiologische Verfassung in Verbindung gebracht. Wir sammelten die Federn von Weibchen einer spanischen Population während des Nestbaus und bestimmten deren CORTf im Labor. Somit wurde CORTf in Federn aus der Mauser vor der Begattung gemessen, die von brütenden Weibchen als Zeichen ihrer sozialen Dominanz benutzt werden. Bei der Prüfung des Alters und der Körpergröße tauchte unter den AICc-Modellen die CORTf zur Erklärung der Größe des Stirnflecks in allen bestgeeigneten Modellen auf, zur Erklärung der Größe der Flügelflecken in den meisten bestgeeigneten Modellen. Die Größe sowohl der Stirn- als auch der Flügelflecken korrelierte negativ mit CORTf, letztere allerdings nicht signifikant. Dies deutet darauf hin, dass brütende Weibchen mit großen pigmentfreien Flecken während der ersten Mauser im Winterquartier einem niedrigen Stresslevel ausgesetzt waren, oder dass starke Signale aussendende Einzeltiere ein niedrigeres Aktivitätsniveau der Hypothalamus-Hypophysen-Achse aufweisen., The study was supported by project CGL2017-83843-C2-1 from Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (MINECO, Spanish Government).

Abstract

In a substantial number of species, females show some development of secondary sexual characters. These traits can function as signals of individual phenotypic or genetic qualities and status to conspecifics. Individuals may benefit potentially from expressing signals or badges of status if they are reliable and honest signals of individual quality. In many species, badge sizes have been shown to correlate with dominance rank, which may be mediated by testosterone (T) levels. Here, we explored geographic variation in the size and properties of the white wing patch of female pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca and its relation to circulating T levels in three populations (two southern populations in central Spain and a northern population in Finland). Furthermore, we aimed at detecting if the size of the white wing patch and its ultraviolet (UV) reflectance indicate individual quality. We found that females in Spain had larger, brighter and more UV reflecting wing patches than those in Finland. Females with higher UV reflectance and larger primary white patches bred earlier. Younger females and females with larger primary white wing patches showed higher T levels. In contrast, higher values of UV reflectance in feathers from these patches were associated with low T levels. Despite genetic differentiation and differences in trait expression between populations, female pied flycatchers from different populations may converge and use the size of white wing patches to signal their T levels and thereby their social dominance. Abstract

A key aspect in the study of plumage traits with a potential role in communication is the cost associated with trait production and maintenance, expressed in terms of oxidative stress. In the Iberian Pied Flycatcher ( Ficedula hypoleuca iberiae (Witherby, 1928)), males and some females exhibit a white forehead patch and both sexes present conspicuous white patches on the wings. We examined associations between these plumage ornaments and their ability to cope with oxidative stress. Furthermore, we explored oxidative costs of reproductive investment. Total antioxidant status (TAS) in plasma and glutathione (tGSH) levels in red blood cells, as well as a marker of oxidative damage in plasma lipids (malondialdehyde (MDA)), were assessed simultaneously for the first time in studies of avian reproduction. We found negative associations between antioxidants and ornaments in incubating females, although this relationship was positive while feeding nestlings. For males, MDA levels were negatively associated with ornaments, while TAS showed a positive relation. Female MDA showed a positive correlation with intensity of incubation attendance, while this relation was negative for tGSH levels. These results indicate that multiple achromatic plumage ornaments signal the individual capacity to cope with costs related to oxidative stress.
