We evaluated and compared the impact on quality of life (QoL) related to foot health and general health between males and females with PF. Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, patients with PF were recruited from a podiatry clinic. Physical examination, sociodemographic data, and the self-reported Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ) were recorded. The FHSQ has three sections and provides two composite scores from 0 to 100. Higher scores (close to 100) reflect better QoL related to foot health and health in general; lower scores (close to 0) denote a worse QoL related to these health items. Introduction: The fifth metatarsal fracture is a foot injury that occurs in sports activities. This fracture has been associated with risk factors based on intrinsic variables such as type of feet (flatfoot or cavus foot), foot pathologies, and bone density among others. Extrinsic variables associated with fifth metatarsal fractures include sports maneuvers, the type of sports practice, and contact surface. Although this injury has been investigated over the years, there is no consensus on the most relevant risk factors that cause this injury. An increase in the number of people with fractures makes it a relevant topic of research. The objective of this review was to identify an overview of the risk factors for producing the fifth metatarsal fracture based on intrinsic and extrinsic variables in sports activities. Furthermore, this review aimed to clarify what is known and what is needed on the risk factors that can influence the appearance of the fracture., Methods: A search in electronic databases, such as Scopus (n = 87), PubMed (n = 187), and Web of Science (n = 173) was conducted. The initial search yielded 447 titles and abstracts, from which 31 papers were selected for detailed analysis after screening all citations against the eligibility criteria., Results: After screening the manuscripts, it was found that the fifth metatarsal fracture can be produced by multiple factors. However, most of the studies focus on one or two specific risk factors. It was found that soccer (38.7%) is the sports activity that presents a higher risk of getting a fifth metatarsal fracture compared to other sports activities. The second risk factor was the performance of critical maneuvers (22.5%) and the third one was the biomechanics of the foot (22.5%)., Conclusion: It is paramount to identify the most critical risk factors linked to the fifth metatarsal fracture to be able to implement effective treatments and prevention strategies., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: The aim of this study was to assess the sense of coherence (SOC) in the Spanish-speaking population during the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic., Methods: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases in August 2024. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the critical appraisal tools developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute., Results: A total of 25 studies were included in the review, which demonstrated that high SOC is associated with improved coping styles, a reduced incidence of mental disorders, and greater resilience to traumatic events. The findings indicated that SOC acts as a crucial protective factor in diverse population groups, including health professionals, university students, and older adults, particularly during the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic., Conclusions: The study concludes that there are significant benefits for the mental and physical health of the population, regardless of cultural context, to be gained from strengthening the SOC. It is therefore essential that interventions which enhance the SOC are implemented in order to improve public health in times of crisis. The preparation of a hybrid nanomaterial is reported by covalently attaching 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid groups to the surface of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes using 1,6-diaminohexane as cross-linking agent. This nanomaterial, modified with the redox mediator, was used as transduction element to construct an amperometric sensor for the efficient indirect determination of glutathione reductase at a low working potential of - 0.05 V, through the oxidation of unconsumed nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) in the enzymatic reaction. The sensor exhibited an excellent linear response in the range 1.6 to 174 µU/µL, with high reproducibility and selectivity. The developed device was successfully validated in real samples, accurately determining the active enzyme in diluted human serum, making it a promising alternative for the determination of glutathione reductase and other related NADPH-dependent enzymes with relevance in clinical analysis., (© 2024. The claw toe deformity is a painful condition that mainly affects the adult population. Although there are many different treatments to solve the deformity, there is no optimal procedure to restore the normal foot mechanics. The objective of this review was to identify the technical features of the kinematic evaluation methods used in patients with claw toes. Furthermore, the aim of this review was to clarify what is known and what is needed apart from the surgical procedures to correct the claw toe deformity, with the purpose of reducing risk factors of falling in elderly people. A search in electronic databases, such as Scopus (n = 78), Google Scholar (n = 705) and ScienceDirect (n = 290) was conducted. There were seven articles (43.75%) related to the fixation (arthrodesis) of proximal and distal interphalangeal joints, one article (6.25%) describes the correction of the claw toe through plantar plate tenodesis and release of collateral ligaments, four articles (25%) describe the procedure of tendon transfer, one article (6.25%) describes flexor digitorum brevis tenotomy and a proximal interphalangeal joint arthrolysis, and another article (6.25%) presented the impact of partial phalanx osteotomy to treat the claw toe deformity. In conclusion, the review indicates that there are several studies related to the treatment or correction of claw toe deformity. However, there is a lack of knowledge of the postsurgical effects of treating claw toe condition, especially in the structural mechanics (plantar pressure distribution, stability, gait, foot mechanics and so on) of the foot after the correction of the claw toe deformity. Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are prevalent mesenchymal tumours of the gastrointestinal tract, commonly exhibiting structural variations in KIT and PDGFRA genes. While the mutational profiling of somatic tumours is well described, the genes behind the susceptibility to develop GIST are not yet fully discovered. This study explores the genomic landscape of two primary GIST cases, aiming to identify shared germline pathogenic variants and shed light on potential key players in tumourigenesis., Methods: Two patients with distinct genotypically and phenotypically GISTs underwent germline whole genome sequencing. CNV and single nucleotide variant (SNV) analyses were performed., Results: Both patients harbouring low-risk GISTs with different mutations ( PDGFRA and KIT ) shared homozygous germline pathogenic deletions in both CFHR1 and CFHR3 genes. CNV analysis revealed additional shared pathogenic deletions in other genes such as SLC25A24 . No particular pathogenic SNV shared by both patients was detected., Conclusion: Our study provides new insights into germline variants that can be associated with the development of GISTs, namely, CFHR1 and CFHR3 deep deletions. Background: Onychocryptosis is a nail deformity that occurs when the side of the nail grows into soft tissue, which causes pain, sepsis and the formation of granulation. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare different levels of kinesiophobia in subjects with onychocryptosis before and after surgery to eliminate this condition., Methods: A descriptive and observational study was conducted with a total sample size of 25 subjects with a mean age of 40.96 ± 18.25 years. The pretest sample was composed of the 25 subjects before the surgical treatment of onychocryptosis and the posttest sample was composed of the same 25 subjects after the surgical treatment of onychocryptosis. Kinesiophobia levels and total scores were self-reported using the Spanish version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK-11)., Results: The Wilcoxon test for related samples and the Mann-Whitney U test for independent samples were used to compare the results before and after the surgical treatment. It was observed that in all the items as well as in the total score, there were significant changes in the levels of kinesiophobia, after the surgical intervention for onychocryptosis ( P  < 0.05) compared to the levels before surgery, except for items 4 and 11 in which there were no significant differences ( P  > 0.05). Before surgery, 0% of the subjects with onychocryptosis reported not being afraid of movement, 16% reported mild fear of movement, 8% reported moderate fear of movement and 76% of the subjects with onychocryptosis reported severe and maximum fear of movement. We used finite element analysis to study the mechanical stress distribution of a new intramedullary implant used for proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) arthrodesis (PIPJA) to surgically correct the claw-hammer toe deformity that affects 20% of the population. After geometric reconstruction of the foot skeleton from claw toe images of a 36-year-old male patient, two implants were positioned, in the virtual model, one neutral implant (NI) and another one 10° angled (10°AI) within the PIPJ of the second through fourth HT during the toe-off phase of gait and results were compared to those derived for the non-surgical foot (NSF). A PIPJA was performed on the second toe using a NI reduced tensile stress at the proximal phalanx (PP) (45.83 MPa) compared to the NSF (59.44 MPa; p < 0.001). When using the 10°AI, the tensile stress was much higher at PP and middle phalanges (MP) of the same toe, measuring 147.58 and 160.58 MPa, respectively, versus 59.44 and 74.95 MPa at corresponding joints in the NSF (all p < 0.001). Similar results were found for compressive stresses. The NI reduced compressive stress at the second PP (-65.12 MPa) compared to the NSF (-113.23 MPa) and the 10°AI (-142 MPa) (all p < 0.001). The von Mises stresses within the implant were also significantly lower when using NI versus 10°AI (p < 0.001). Therefore, we do not recommend performing a PIPJA using the 10°AI due to the increase in stress concentration primarily at the second PP and MP, which could promote implant breakage., (© 2024 The Author(s). Objective: To evaluate the foot-health-related quality of life in individuals with versus without lower-limb lymphedema., Methods: A case-control study was carried out in an academic clinic in Lisbon, Portugal. Eighty participants (40 controls and 40 with lymphedema) were included in the study. The researchers examined sociodemographic and clinical data and foot-health-related quality of life in both groups. In the group with lymphedema, lower-limb lymphedema was also characterized., Results: Individuals with lower-limb lymphedema had significantly lower scores on all dimensions of the Foot Health Status Questionnaire in comparison with the control group., Conclusions: Individuals with lower-limb lymphedema appear to have a poorer foot-health-related quality of life than the general population., (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Background: Lateral ankle sprain is one of the most common musculoskeletal issues during sports and activities of daily living. This study investigated the effect of combined neuromuscular training and conventional training (including strengthening, range of motion, and balance exercises) on muscle morphology, dynamic balance, perceived ankle instability, and functional capacity in persons with chronic ankle instability (CAI)., Hypothesis: The combination of neuromuscular and conventional training programs might result in additional benefits on the morphology of muscle, dynamic balance, and functional capacity in subjects with CAI., Study Design: A single-blind parallel-arm randomized controlled trial., Level of Evidence: Level 2., Methods: A total of 34 participants with CAI were divided randomly into experimental (EG) and control groups (CG). The EG received conventional and neuromuscular training, while the CG underwent conventional training. Cross-sectional areas of the peroneus longus and tibialis anterior muscles were measured using ultrasonography. Measurements included reaching direction distance, ankle instability, and the foot and ankle outcome score, all evaluated before and immediately after 12 intervention sessions and 4 weeks later in the follow-up phase., Results: Repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant improvement in the EG, particularly in the cross-sectional area of the tibialis anterior muscle on the injured side and the posteromedial reaching direction displacement of the Y balance test. Moreover, the EG's foot and ankle outcome scores increased significantly compared with the CG ( P < 0.05). However, the group effect size ranged from minor to moderate (Hedges g , 0.40-0.73)., Conclusion: Combining neuromuscular and conventional training programs yields greater benefits than conventional training alone regarding tibialis anterior muscle morphology, posteromedial dynamic balance, and functional capacity in persons with CAI., Clinical Relevance: The combination of neuromuscular and conventional training programs could enhance muscle morphology, dynamic balance, perceived ankle instability, and functional capacity in persons with CAI.
